Shin Megami Tensei IV Trailer Gives A Taste Of The Game’s English Voices

By Ishaan . May 23, 2013 . 1:20pm

Atlus USA have shared a brand new trailer for Shin Megami Tensei IV that shows off more English language footage from the game, and provides another taste of the game’s English voices, including that of Burroughs, your navigation AI. Watch it below:

Shin Megami Tensei IV will be released on July 16th in North America. Europe will see the game as an unspecified date in the future as well.

Can’t wait till July!!! But I feel sorry for European gamers…

    • Keima88

Dont worry! Thanks for caring! It will come… someday.
Hopefully a release date will be announced soon or at least at the E3.

      • JMaster3000

It seems its 2014 Spring :/
If it was 2013 it would be announced on that Nintendo Direct back then.
But at least we are getting Bravely Default in 2013 lol

        • zeik56

NIS America announced they’re bringing it over awhile ago and they seem pretty timely with their releases. I’d expect it by the end of the year.

          • They’re not, they’re bringing over Soul Hackers. Nintendo of Europe are bringing SMT IV.

  • Chris Yuen

Woah. That Hope ain’t no Kazuya Nakai (nothing can top Zoro), but that was very decent! Mmm Dat Burroughs Eng dub. Delicious. I approve.

  • Tooru

Those voices are a bit better than the cheesy ones from the other trailer. Love Burroughs’ voice, though I can’t help but think of Naked Lunch when I hear that name.

The way they pronounce “samurai” bugs me though. Is that really the right way to say it?

    • ShadowDivz

      Sounds okay to me.

    • Prinnydoom

Yeah thats the right way to say it.

    • Shane Guidaboni

We’ve Americanized it for so long that it sounds weird otherwise.

    • gold163

The pronunciation is correct, it’s probably the accent that’s throwing everybody off.

    • Suicunesol

We westerners have been pronouncing it like “samerai” for decades. The way they’re saying it–the Japanese way, but with a Western accent–is why it sounds weird.

    • Hraesvelgr

It’s not really proper for Japanese or English, to be honest. Not really sure why they decided to go with it.

    • Steven Higgins

For a long time we’ve been pronouncing it as “SAM-er-ie” when the actual Japanese pronunciation is “SAH-moo-rie”. The pronunciation “SAH-mer-ie” is closer to the correct one, but still not quite there.

On a side note, I’ve been watching anime so long that the Japanese pronunciation is starting to seem just as natural to me as the English. For example, when I see an English word that ends in “ai” my brain immediately wants to pronounce the long ‘”I” instead of the long “A”. Does anyone else have that problem?

      • Alexander Marquis Starkey

I’ve been doing that for years even without listening to Japanese voice overs.

    • If you’re Japanese, sure. But “samurai” has been used as a loan word in English for so long that pronouncing it “correctly” without sounding incredibly awkward is pretty much impossible, which makes me wish Atlus had just let the voice actors pronounce “samurai” the way the average English-speaking person says it.

  • gold163

Not bad, but I wish Burroughs had a deeper and more robotic voice like the Japanese dub.

    • Silver Citizen

Yeah, I was hoping for Kirsten Potter.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Burroughs voice is awesome. I prefer this, at least she isnt the AI from the Resident Evil movie. “You’re ALL going to die down here”

      • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Never glance quickly at something. I did, and I accidentally read Kristin Stuart. *shivers*

    • Same. I was thinking of the Aurora Unit from Metroid Prime 3.

  • new_tradition

…Is that Ali Hillis as Burroughs? :DDDD

    • Nah, sounds like Laura Bailey.

      • winter091231

Laura Bailey is obviously who I’m assuming is Isabeau.
        Ali is definitely Burroughs.

        • I would be surprised if Burroughs was not Laura Bailey. Isabeau doesn’t sound anything like her. I wish these games had cast lists.

          • winter091231

It sounds to me kind of like her performance as Hitomi in Soul Hackers.

          • roadierun

Yeah it sounds exactly like Hitomi.

          • zeik56

Pretty certain Laura Bailey only played Nemissa, not Hitomi.

          • winter091231

            You’re right, my mistake.

          • zeik56

Burroughs is definitely Ali Hillis, ie Liara T’Soni/Lightning. Go listen to a voice clip and you’ll recognize it immediately.

        • Silver Citizen

The voice before the robot voice is Danielle Judovits.

      • Guest

Laura Bailey, the video game industry’s answer to duct tape.

      • I believe that’s the voice before the robotic one. It’s definitely Ali Hillis as the robot voice.

      • Silver Citizen

        Not even.

  • Muffum

Definitely hearing Richard Epcar and Danielle Judovits in there.

  • ShadowDivz

Japan is moving towards the age of robo waifus.

    • MrTyrant

      Gotta love the new generation~

    • Welp. Time for me to book a ticket then, I guess.

  • Prinnydoom

God damn i want this bad -__-

  • Hound

I was really hoping to hear the cathedral priest’s voice.. He’s so funny in Japanese.

    • leadintea

I somehow feel he’s going to be more hammy than quirky in English, and if we’re going for the hammiest english VA, it’s probably going to be Patrick Seitz. :(

  • Shane Guidaboni

Burrough’s sounds great. Glad they picked a good voice actress.

  • vileBrenman

Oh this video made my mara take a battle stance

    • gk2012

      Mine too. ;)

  • Rentekabond

Really glad that Ali Hillis is in this. HOPEFULLY, we can go more than 5 feet without hearing Laura Bailey in this. Really getting sick of hearing her everywhere.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Isnt she in everything because she sounds so different?

      • Rentekabond

All her voices sound practically the same. She’s good at what she does, no doubt, but she can be incredibly grating, especially when she’s in everything ever.

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Other people are saying someone else bro. Plus Atlus usually does uncredited voice projects. Ali Hillis doesn’t do uncredited to my knowledge, so chances are it’s not her.

  • Cerzel

  • ChiffonCake

Looks (and sounds) great! I’m very fond of Burrough’s voice too. July can’t come soon enough!

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Can’t wait for my birthday. ^_^ Burroughs voice is PEEEERRRRFEEEEECCCTTTTTT!

  • This make think that I would like the choice to choose o have undub! (Bravery default please be undub!!)

    • Firekitty

Same here. I’m still holding out hope that Atlus will announce that the game will be dual audio and I’ll be able to pre-order at last.

But in the end I know they won’t, and I’ll just have to wait until I can get a used copy and play with the voices off…or someone breaks the region locking on the 3DS so I can import (really hoping for this option, since full furigana makes this game prime practice material).

The sad thing is, I actually *like* the non-Persona Atlus dubs I’ve heard. I just can’t stand their attitude towards those of us who want dual audio.

      • brian

Well they gave P4A dual audio?
        What attitude?

        • Oltheros

They get pretty defensive if you so much as mention it on their official forums.

This would be OK except they include dual audio like 5% of the time so its like “no there’s no dual audio and don’t even ask”

        • Silver Citizen

No, Arc System Works gave P4A dual audio.

  • MrTyrant

    Seeing the comments in forums:

    • Ferofax

And people wonder why the main stream fans don’t really sit well with the persona fans.

      • why can’t we love all of them.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Because Persona came out the melting pot

    • DyLaN

  • Steven Higgins

I was considering getting it but the in-battle graphics and animation were kind of disappointing. I’ve never played the main MegaTen series games but I was hoping this would look more like the PS2 Persona games. Not necessarily they style but something that didn’t look so flat and simple like this. This looked like a battle from a later-era Gameboy advance game. In the field it looks great so I was expecting the same quality in battle.

    • zeik56

I’ve seen this plenty of times, but I’m actually quite impressed with how the battles look. If you look beyond the first person viewpoint you might notice it actually has some very impressive looking attack and spell animations. Enemies have unique death animations based on how they’re killed, like exploding into ice crystals or the awesome bisection from a slash attack. There are over 400+ demons in the game, which is several times as many as you see in Persona.

It would be a real shame not to even give the game a chance over something rather trivial to the game like that. There was a time when I found first person battles a turn off, but once you play a game that does it well it’s really not a negative at all.

      • Steven Higgins

It’s not really the first person view that bothers me, it’sQuality of the in battle graphics. The way the details on the sprites are blurry (even when watching in 720p) and the jaggedness of the edges. It’s kind of jarring to switch from the smoothness of the field graphics to that and it’s going to be happening a lot because most of your time in an RPG is spent battling. Graphically, I was just expecting more from a MegaTen game on the 3DS. I might still get it, but not a soon as I was going to.

        • zeik56

The 3DS doesn’t display in 720p, so how it looks in a 720p video isn’t very relevant.

The sprites look kind of blurry because they’re on the top screen. The top screen of the 3DS always looks a little blurry when not playing in 3D. It’s an unfortunate quirk of the system, but it’s silly to write off a game for that reason.

Although I find it hard to believe you would notice jagged edges on the sprites without noticing it on the 3D models, where it is much more apparent.

          • Steven Higgins

            I used full screen.

          • Steven Higgins

I used full screen. Maybe the movement disguised the jagged edges on the field because I didn’t see any.

  • Wrathful

I wasn’t going to get it first but watching the trailer, oh fuck, now I’ll have to get 3DS.

  • Voice acting sounds like typical Atlus fare… for better or worse.

  • SirTeffy

Burroughs is voiced by the same actress who did Dorothy in Fragile Dreams. ALL OF MY TEARS.

  • DyLaN

    Liking Burroughs voice :)
