PlayStation Vita Is Becoming A System For Visual Novels

By Spencer . May 28, 2013 . 12:45am

imageTwo more visual novel ports are coming to PlayStation Vita. Dengeki PlayStation reports The Fruit of Grisaia and Hotchkiss will be released in August. Both games are from visual novel developer Front Wing.

The Fruit of Grisaia and Hotchkiss are just some of the visual novels for Sony’s handheld. Xblaze Code: Embryo, Memories Off 6, Haiyore! Nyaruko-san (which comes out on Thursday), Photo Kano Kiss, Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram, Photo Kano Kiss, The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, and of course Virtues Last Reward are also on Vita.

Of course, the PSP has more total visual novels, but more and more visual novel developers are porting their games to PlayStation Vita.

It would be nice if some of these would ever be localized.

    • brian

      Or all of them maybe.

      • jujubee88

I have not read a single Japanese VN, Which is kinda a shame!

I’ve certainly read some manga (your typical Naruto, Bleach, DBZ, One Piece fair) but seeing some VN’s on dat OLED would be prettty cool. :D

Which VN would you like to see make its way on VITA?

        • benhofb

OMIGOD, Steins;Gate. Steins;Gate a million times over. But hey, at least we’ve gotten the Zero Escape entries on both DS, 3DS, and Vita (my preferred version being the Vita one; no data-eating bugs).

        • DyLaN

        • brian

          *deep breath*
Welllll, again all of them ideally but if I had to choose from these strictly, then Photo Kano Kiss since it is exclusive iirc.
Or in general and not just localized?
If this counts as anything I could imagine then something historical like Hakuoki but maybe Sengoku period, with a bishoujo art style like Photo Kano, Steins;Gate levels of conspiracy, and mecha added in like the way Princess Mononoke mixes fantasy and history.
But if it is something already existing, then I’d probably choose the most recent version of Ever17.

Not japanese, but it is free (and excellent) so check out Katawa Shoujo if you haven’t yet though it is (barely) eroge.

Aside from that I guess Corpse Party, Hakuoki, 999, Higurashi, etc, I’m trying to think of non-eroge localized ones you could try but these are about all that comes to mind.
For eroge these are mostly based on internet impressions: you may like Kira Kira especially if you like punk rock; Edelweiss seems to be a nice choice if you’re okay with a lot of pervy stuff; a similar case for Koihime Musou and Demonbane; Eve Burst Error looks interesting though it is technically an eroge localized without those elements.
That was a pretty lengthy comment, hopefully it helps.

          • jujubee88

            Awesome, thanks! ^^

That’s a lot to take in, but I will just wet my feet and buy Corpse Parry for my VITA (PSP versions).

Could I just begin playing Book of Shadows or should I begin with the original?

          • brian

Mhm, and you should start with the first one since Book of Shadows is a direct sequel and very heavily tied into the first game.

          • jujubee88

            Fantastic, thanks so much!

    • wererat42

Mangagamer and JAST are two commercial VN localization companies, and of course there are fan-based projects with varying degrees of success.

  • Chris Yuen

With recent anime titles giving the Vita a nod, such as Hataraku Maou Sama
(the devil is a part-timer) and Oreimo, I wonder if Keima will upgrade to a Play Field Pasta for the upcoming The World God Only Knows season 3…yokkyun!

    • tubers

LOL said something similar a few weeks back xD

The PSP seems to be surviving on VNs in Japan nowadays. So If more transfer over to Vita, its days are officially numbered.

    • Bloodios

Well, its 9th birthday is approaching, and since 9 means completion in feng shui (I think), it’s probably about the right time for the system to retire for good and lets the Vita truly take over the business.

    • Kevadu

VNs have been popular on the PSP for a loooong time so that’s pretty twisted logic…

I’m saying VNs are mostly being released on it. There isn’t much else coming out for it aside from them, since major titles are moving onto the Vita.

No doubt VNs were/are popular on it, just the balance has shifted towards them. >:)

  • Guest

I know Photo Kano Kiss is great, but is it that good to count it twice on that list? Also, Fate/Stay Night.

  • Foryth

Grisaia looks pretty good, I was thinking of playing the PC version sometime in the future. Interesting news, I hope this does well for them. :)

  • Howl

If all of these came to NA then i would buy a Vita.

    • Altin

And if all planets are standing in one straight line, PS4’s will fall from heaven.

  • Hang on, they’re releasing Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram on the Vita? I completely missed that news, but I’m glad that the Vita’s getting it too, to complete the set. :)

I’ve got a few visual novels on the Vita but your list has reminded me that there are a bunch more out or coming out that I might consider!

    • Aoshi00

Since it’s on PS3 alrdy, at the rate 5pb/Mages is porting everything Steins;Gate these days, should be only a matter of time for PSP/Vita.. I’ve only finished the Okabe and Daru chapters so far and it’s quite good, on Kurisu chapter now. Wonder if Robotics;Notes would be ported to Vita too eventually (the anime was actually better than the game).

Still haven’t finished Time Traveler and Tokushu Houdou-bu yet.. Photo Kano looks much better on the Vita :)

      • Yeah, I’d been assuming that they would be likely to at some point, but I’m happy for the confirmation. :)

If you could let me know your impressions of Time Traveler and Tokushu Houdou-bu (particularly the latter) I’d be really grateful. I’m still considering them for when my current pile diminishes, or if I spot them at a too-good-to-refuse price.

        • Aoshi00

Yeah, it’s nice to play VN w/ the Vita’s touchscreen, I think it would be cool to play Steins;Gate on the iPad too.

I haven’t gotten very far w/ either game yet (too much backlog and now next gen system coming *.*).. Time Traveler is like 428, jumping back and forth between different chars’ scenarios, a bit confusing sometimes.. In Tokushu Houdou-bu you’re a camera-man and then got recruited into this department that reports on the paranormal stuff. There’s the story part, and then the puzzle part where you need to point out contradictions in video footage (like w/ the photos in Instant Brain), it’s game over if you get it wrong, you could get different grades too..

I only finished the first chapter w/ a girl who thought she was abducted by aliens.. it would probably lead to something big in the subsequent chapters.. you see these games on sale now :)?

I know VN on a portable is nice, but I’m used to playing VNs on the 360 now :) Just easier to see on the big screen.

  • And I’ll never get to play a single one. ;_;

    • sherimae1324

      ummm virtues last reward? :_:

      • Didn’t like 999, don’t care for its sequel. I’m talking mainly about visual novels based on anime. Like the Toradora, OreImo and Haganai for PSP. I’m sure Vitas gonna get plenty of those.

  • Serpenter Rex

I’d just like it if they’d come with Furigana or something. That’d get me importing right away. I’ve been struggling with learning Kanji after all… But I guess that’ll never happen because of the target audience for VN ^^”

  • I know you want Photo Kano Kiss. You also missed Fate Stay Night and Little Busters. Two more awesome VNs to reach the PS Vita.

  • kroufonz

I believe Hotchkiss is GIGA (known with baldr series, konnyaku, also their cafe series).

I would hold buying grisaia since it’s a trilogy, there is still chance for all 3 bundled for PS3 perhaps.

    • Radiosity

Yeah, Hotchkiss is Giga (戯画), not Frontwing, was going to post the same but since you already pointed it out I’ll just confirm it as well.

  • Perhaps this will prompt Visual Novels to receive localisation. If it does, it would go a long way for the Vita.

    • coax

I don’t see why it would. Look at how many PSP VNs have gotten translated and they’ve had years to work on those.

      • DyLaN

But PSP at this point is dead out of Japan. Vita isn’t, atm anyway.

        • coax

Yes, and… what’s different about this new platform that it’s suddenly going to prompt translating VNs for it?

Not to mention that it can still do PSP ones as well, a VN is about the least taxing thing you can run on the emulator.

        • Solomon_Kano

There were VNs available to be localized earlier in the PSP’s life and they weren’t, so that doesn’t really say much.

          • DyLaN

I will admit tht I’m just being optimistic. But still, compare to the PSP age, there more interest in VNs nowadays if Corpse Party and Hakuoki sales are anything to go by. (Unless I’m wrong again, then I apologize in advance) If we reached tht line again, then I will accept it. But until then. I am remaining just a bit optimistic.

And apparently I’m not welcomed here so I think I will take my leave.

          • Solomon_Kano

People downvote everywhere, bro. You’re welcome wherever you feel like you’ve got something to say.

The thing about Hakuouki and Corpse Party is that, due to there not really being any VNs around before them, it’s hard to say that there’s more interest now. I wouldn’t say there’s less, it’s just that we don’t really have a lot of information to gauge the situation.

Nothing wrong with being optimistic, I just wouldn’t want you to get your hopes up since the Vita’s situation in relation to VNs isn’t far from what the PSPs was even when it was popular in the west.

  • Haku

I want to live in a world where VN’s can be sold worldwide and not only in japan. Its so sad that most of the people wouldnt understand the quality of a VN. -,-

At least we get SOME VN’s over here still. Like 999 or VLR, so there might be hope?

    • Aristides

Someone has to prove there’s a market for this type of games. Once that happens we’ll start seeing localizations util then we must wait…

    • benhofb

I feel you. As of late, most of the VNs that have been localized have been the Zero Escape series and then a handful of Otome games. I find the later a little disappointing mostly because I am a teenage guy and don’t really want to play an Otome game all that much. But, no less, any VN coming to the states is another that we can play. Hopefully the folks at Spike Chunsoft and Aksys can pick up some other games in the future!

    • Testsubject909

Too bad VLR pissed me off by some of the character’s showing some very irritating traits… Such as honestly believing that they themselves are rational logical intelligent people when they’re doing nothing short of being dumbasses…

And yes, I know the story. No, it’s not something they do because of the story. It’s really their personality and characterization at work here. They’re just that hypocritically stupid.

  • Hikaru Lighthalzen

i really hope they localize xblaze..

    • I really hope they localize all of them, will they, no. But a man can hope. ;-;

  • Vita is pretty much out of the danger zone in Japan. It is a super safe market for niche games now so they’ll probably keep coming from now on.

  • Obvious outcome, been a while since the psp was getting less of it’s normal VN and they are all moving to vita… The Fruit of Grisaia is already out for the psp tho

  • Niyari

speaking of visual novels. the next in the ; series? although i don’t see Nitroplus anywhere on that page…

    • It is the next in the series but it is anime only for now and it is not exactly official.

    • SupaPhly

      it’s a light novel

      • Oh light novel? I thought it was anime… well an anime will be made for it in time.

    • DyLaN

Shikura said tht its not the 4th “;” title though.

EDIT: Balck Magic!? lol Also isn’t 死后世界 = Afterlife? Why they use Next World?

  • Kelohmello

Photo Kano so good it’s on there twice.

Seriously though, this doesn’t shock me at all. PSP had tons of VNs. Only makes sense that Vita would be the console to pick up the mantle since 3DS doesn’t exactly seem like the right console for that.

    • Testsubject909

I ordered Photo Kano Kiss and am expecting for it to arrive next week.

I’m guessing it’s text heavy. And I can’t read Japanese.

Still, I’m excited to give the game a try, at worse I’ll use a guide, worse yet I’ll just do a LOT of trial and error.

Edit: At best I’ll try to just find a fan script translation or something.

      • Kelohmello

If you can’t read japanese it’s alright if you can at least understand conversational japanese. Most lines are voiced and there’s alot of illustration to help you pick choices and things. You’ll probably be able to figure it out.

  • I’m enjoying the MUVLUV Total Eclipse novel and looking forward to the Shingeki no Kyojin ones

    • DyLaN

Some details on MLA:TE plz? :-) I heard the Terrorist arc ended halfway in the VN, is it true? Do we get to choose the girls?

      • I haven’t got that far but I’ll let ya know sorry

  • artemisthemp

So many VN I want to “play”, but sadly only a few publisher actually take the chance with them

    • Asksys should step up and be a big boy and localize all of them!!!! Mwahahahahaah.

      • artemisthemp

Aksys maybe should localize VN like Little Buttler Converter Edition, but asking for all is to must.

        • Yah I was just joking. But I would think they are one of the more likely companies to try to localize VNs.

        • DyLaN

I think you mean “Little Busters!” ryte? I think there no way we are getting officially translated key VN unless the head of key changes cuz he (allegedly) is against the localization of key VNs.

          • artemisthemp

Then give him some LN2 or KCN.
I hear that fix those kinda allergedly

  • HPN

You don’t even need to localize them per se. Just release to PSN just like the half-dozen non-localized PS1 .JP titles.

    • I don’t see the point in playing a VISUAL NOVEL that’s in a language that you don’t understand. You know, the thing that makes Japanese Fire Emblem and Super Robot Wars games still playable for outsiders is that they still have a lot of gameplay to it despite their text-heaviness — whereas, iirc, visual novels are heavily text-based and their gameplay revolves around it most of the time.

  • Well, if the Vita is becoming the system for Visual Novels, then it sure shouldn’t/wouldn’t be a(n) hassle to bring some of them overseas :3

    • It’s a slight hassle due to all the text, but the problem is they won’t sell all that well so companies don’t wanna spend money translating and releasing them in English speaking countries.

      • Well, it was a mere playful comment, but sure, I understand the complications. Still, it would be nice to see some fascinating visual novels on current-gen portable systems and consoles. Sure, we’ve got Ace Attorney and Zero Escape, but they don’t appeal to me very much.

        • Right well… it just isn’t gonna happen.

  • Albel

So, people actually buy these non-ero-ports? xD

I mean, yeah sure Grisaia is not all about the ero, but Hotchkiss?
Besides, the english Kono Oozora release is a good example about everthing wrong with cutting eroge down to all-ages….

  • DyLaN

I just hope the Vita VNs won’t suffer the same fate as PSP VNs…. I hope we may finally get some of those Vita VNs in the future…. Aksys there a Vita port of F/SN now btw.

EDIT: So being optimistic apparently means I’m not welcomed if the downvotes means anything.

  • AuraGuyChris

    PS Vita.
    Your new friendly novel tool.

  • As long as I still my SRW fix on the Vita I’m happy.

  • CirnoLakes

Well, at least the Vita is getting something.

Consoles will always get some degree of Visual Novels. Though the PC will always be the place for Visual Novels. They’re the traditional market for the genre.

    • Testsubject909

Vita’s getting quite a bit though if we’re looking at recent games coming up.

Plus with E3 and TGS, we’re sure to get even more releases coming.

Edit: And yeah. There’s really no beating the PC for the amount of VN you can get.

  • It would be nice if they would bring at least one of these to America :C

    • Testsubject909

      It would.

Well, at least it’s region free right?

  • $36598391

I hope The Song of Saya gets ported to Vita

  • Setsuna ♥

Keima Katsuragi would be so proud

  • Zonder88

A shame most of these would never make it in the West

  • who remembers keima’s PFP ? (kami nomi)

  • UmikazeVN

HotchKiss is made by Giga, not Front Wing.
