Monster Hunter 4’s Latest Trailer Shows The New Shark Dragon In Action

By Sato . May 31, 2013 . 5:52am

Earlier today, we got a double-dose of two upcoming 3DS Capcom titles in Monster Hunter 4 and Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies in a Japan-only Nintendo Direct. Series producer, Ryozo Tsujimoto made a guest appearance to present the latest trailer, where we got a good look at some recently introduced monsters and the new Frozen Sea area.

The trailer starts out with a Hunter encountering the new insect monster called Alceltas (which gets devoured by a much larger insect monster later.) In the Frozen Sea area, we see plenty of shark-like creatures with legs called Squagills.

Things don’t look too bad, until what looks to be a much larger version of the Squagill appears from under water. Oh, it can also run and shoot jet streams from its mouth, that would make even the Plesioth jealous. It even does its best Nibelsnarf impersonation by chomping down on the poor Hunter.

For the first time in the series, Hunters will be traveling around different villages with a traveling caravan. Halfway through the trailer, what looks to be a resort island full of Felynes is shown. It also shows farming features we’ve seen in previous Monster Hunter games, such as fishing, voyaging and training Felynes.

It wouldn’t be a Monster Hunter trailer without an extra something at the very end. This time, we got a glimpse of what looks like a new dragon with giant wings. Could it be a new Elder Dragon?

As reported earlier, Capcom and Nintendo are preparing limited edition 3DS XL systems with Monster Hunter 4 themes called Goa Magara Black and Felyne White, which can be seen here. Tsujimoto also mentioned in the Nintendo Direct that they’ll be revealing new online features in the near future, along with a closer look at the Charge Axe weapon during a Capcom event this weekend.

Monster Hunter 4 will be slated for release on September 14th, for 5,990 yen on Nintendo 3DS.

*crosses fingers* Please be a Kushala Daora subspecies, and not just the return of a normal Daora

    • Sango

I think it was just rusted.

  • Pockystix

I hope they bring back slime

I love that element for solo-play. Sure I usually bring elemental weaknesses, but those enemies that lack any real outstanding weakness can’t take explosions. . . like most everything lol

maybe a brachy subspecies too, red please~

    • konsama

Obv a yellow brachy with red slime. Slime changes color to purple then explodes and can also poison.

  • Go2hell66

Last dragon looked an awful lot like kushala daora

    • mike dickson

that was kushala daora same body shape and same color scheme

    • Happy Gamer

      i thought it was alterion

      • J_Joestar

They share a basic body design so it isn’t surprising a lot of people make the mistake.

  • Tousand

is it just me.or anyone else think that the graphic is no better than the one on the psp, or maybe i can say worse?

  • jump

  • Ramengeddon

Last dragon is just a Kusha. They don’t seem to be bringing in a whole lot of new monsters I hope they at least mash MHFU and MH3U monsters into MH4 but I suppose they’ll save that for MH4G if anything.

    • Sango

At least bring back more elder dragons. Gen 3 lacked elder dragons big time.

    • ronin4life

I’ve seen quite a few new monsters. There is a spider, monkey thing and this big mouthed stubby dragon thing.

      • Fango

not nearly enough new monsters for a new generation….

      • Ramengeddon

That isn’t a lot. All the boss monsters in Tri were new except for rathalos/ian and diablos. Its a new generation so i’m expecting an all new lineup of bosses.

        • ronin4life

All new… because they replaced all the old ones.

Four looks to have most of the monsters from all the previous games plus at least 5 new ones. And those old monsters will most likely have better animations and new move sets like the rathians in 3 did.

The lack of new monsters can be disappointing, but I think there is enoughcontenthere so far.

          • J_Joestar

yeah, looks like they are spent a lot of effort on updating the older monsters to 3’s standard.

Maybe we’ll get something like Gold Rajang + Savage Jho Arena match?

  • Rohan Kishibe

yeah the last dragon is totally kushala daora. even the environment is right for it

  • Aw man… Gravios & Basarios are back…?

    • Spider-Man

      They’re gonna mess you up.

    • Go2hell66

Dual swords own the crap out of gravios

  • If Teostra is in the game definitely i will buy a copy of this game

  • konsama

In hell is a new dragon, even that super short part of the theme when it descends was more than obvious.

The game looks so awesome, i wonder how long it will take to be out in the west.

  • Virevolte

I like the possibility to travel, even though it’s probably not much.

  • Keima88

Looks like the 2 insect monsters combined? The smaller one is sitting on top on the back of the bigger one.

  • zferolie

I played 3U on the Wii U and the 3DS, and I must say that if I pick up this when it comes out, I will have to buy the circle pad pro, if they haven’t already made a 3DS with a second stick. You REALLY need on in this game…

That being said, this looks epic, and I can’t wait to play it.

    • Rein

I play 3u on my 3ds just fine without cpp..

      • zferolie

Really? I cannot for the life of my fight under water without it.

        • Ethan_Twain

I think that’s more a function of the underwater fighting in MH 3 being terrible in every version of the game. There’s a reason that’s not coming back in MH 4. That’s one of those new ideas that just didn’t pan out.

          • zferolie

I will admit under water fighting was always awkward even after getting used to it. Still, I will be a bit sad to see it gone. As awkward as it was, it did open up the world a bit.

        • Exkaiser

Underwater fighting is pretty easy with the target camera. It’s not as if you really need to look up or down to adjust height- if you hold the roll button and up or down, you’ll ascend or descend. Since you can roll in those directions, it’s actually a lot faster than adjusting the camera and swimming away. I’m actually a pretty big fan of the underwater combat.

  • Sergio Briceño

I only played one of the PSP ones and I must say it has come a LONG way, considering it uses the Pokémon formula (do the same, still feel fresh). It’s impressive and looks really difficult (because I died to monsters 1/10 this size on the PSP).

… Is there a story to Monhun? Do they have to, wipe out all dangerous monsters from island to island so they can be inhabited, or do they just do it for the thrills?

    • Daniel blue

It’s just a collection of quests divided into ranks. You do most quests in one rank and eventually unlock the next one. There’s little story tying it all up, but most fans will tell you it’s not really necessary – and I agree.

    • Zharkiel

There are some lore pieces here and there, but I don’t think there is a continuous storyline. It all takes place in the same world though, that I think it’s confirmed.

As for the hunting, each hunter has their own reasons. The guild’s purpouse is to regulate hunting so the species don’t go extinct, they also do research on their behaviour and are always looking for new species.

      • Sergio Briceño

Thank you. It’s good to know there is a story at least.

  • Definitely Kushala Daora

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Kushala Daora at the end…………. “Shivers” and that shark monster with the scorpion is looking really cool with the combi style considering that the more the shark eat the small shark, it will grow fatter and the scorpion with that flying bug combo.

  • Dexward

The new Elder Dragon looks to be Kusha. Anyway, holy crap! Basarios got a new makeover!

  • OK, I’m convinced now that the 3DS firmware update that happened recently was for this game. They’ve upped the graphics from the last time they showed it off, too. Or maybe it just looks a lot better in motion like all portable games.

    • Fango

      graphics look the same….

  • Sisnax

I’d say Khezu is pretty much announced with this video. You can see it’s Blademaster armor used half-way trough

  • Daniel blue

Is it already confirmed how the general exploration works? I suppose the graphical hit came from the fact the areas are more open and no longer split into separate zones?

    It’s a worthy trade-off if that’s the case.

  • gquain

Last dragon looks like an Alatreon with much wider wings to me

    • J_Joestar

it is actually Kushala Daora, it is from the previous MH games before 3/tri. They do share a similar body type so it isn’t surprising a lot of people make that mistake.

  • JustThisOne

Uhhh, okay. I’ve never touched a Monster Hunter game before, or even looked at any of the articles – BUT A SHARK DRAGON?!

    I may I have to reconsider. *__*

  • Foxeh Shihōin

    looks like alateron

  • Zharkiel

FUCK YEAH! YKK MAKES A GLORIOUS RETURN. Don’t judge me, I missed that bastard.

  • xAnguishx

This one would be Awesome for the psp would look great xD

  • J_Joestar

I’d say it looks more like a Shark Frog than a Shark Dragon.

  • Guest
