Akihiko Yoshida Working On Next Bravely Default Says Yasumi Matsuno

By Ishaan . June 5, 2013 . 10:00am

Yasumi Matsuno of Tactics Ogre fame recently tweeted that he was meeting with Bravely Default illustrator Akihiko Yoshida for drinks. In a follow-up tweet, Matsuno jokingly added that Yoshida would not be discussing Final Fantasy XIV, on which he is working.

In reply to this tweet, another artist, Misato Mitsumi, questioned what Matsuno was working on, aside from Final Fantasy XIV. To this, Matsuno replied that Yoshida is at work on the next Bravely Default project.

This isn’t the first time a new Bravely Default game has been hinted at. The game’s producer Tomoya Asano has personally hinted at a sequel multiple times, and was at one point even collecting user feedback for a future Bravely Default game.

While Japan might be seeing a sequel to Bravely Default in the future, North America and Europe will be seeing the first game in 2014 and 2013 respectively.

For now, I just want to play the first one. I’ll get excited for a sequel once i’m finished that.

  • Herok♞

Well hopefully we get the second one fast then we are getting the first one.

  • Ferchenko

    why you not….

  • This headline confused me so much. So… Matsuno still isn’t working on anything right now, right?

    • Matsuno probably is working on things but made no mention of what he’s doing.

  • surakian

I kind of wish Matsuno told us what he was working on. But I am excited for BDFF2 and love Yoshida’s art so no complaints…

  • I hate to be the local whore, but they need to consider the methods of development that may take into account the possibility of localization.

  • 3PointDecoupage

Wait, Europe is getting it first?!!?

    • デ オオカミ

After two decades of having to bear the opposite, it might be a nice change of pace, don’cha think? ^^

      • 3PointDecoupage

No, because I want it now! -tantrum-

        • デ オオカミ

Somehow, I can’t but respect that wish XD

        • Tom

I wouldn’t mind if US got it first in case the 3DS wasn’t region coded…

      • Draparde

I’m just glad both are getting it :) . i’m always sad when a game i want is EU only, or hear people that cant get a game thats NA only.

      • 324234

On the 3DS, Europe has been getting a -lot- of nice treatment from Nintendo already. How about the superior version of Spirit Camera? The earlier release of the Pikachu XL? An exclusive pre-order bonus with Animal Crossing?

But really, why can’t US and EU just get simultaneous releases? Neither should have to wait. Especially for Bravely Default, my personal most anticipated game..

  • Tom

    Great new! YAY!

  • Lemon

His games are great, but I really hope the storyline in BD2 won’t be too depressing…

    • puchinri

It doesn’t sound like Matsuno is working on BD2, just that he was saying Yoshida is at work on it.

      • Lemon

Ah I see, either way I’m glad the there’s a no.2 in the works. The art and music for the first one is so awesome that I don’t regret one bit buying both the game guide and OST.

  • puchinri

Yay~. Although it’s hard to say if it’s a console sequel or not, any work on the series is good.

    • Doubt it will jump to consoles. Handhelds are likely where this series will stay.

      • puchinri

Home consoles. I still consider handhelds to be portable consoles. I was just wondering more specifically, if this was in the same vein as the PC/browser game or not.
(I’m glad and excited if it stays on the 3DS though~!)

        • I don’t think a legit sequel will be a social/mobile/browser game. Fairly certain it will stay with handhelds (ie the 3DS).

          • puchinri

I don’t think they’d make a legit sequel a social game, but all that was said is that Yoshida is working on something for the series, right? So it’d hard to say what that it is in any capacity.

But, we do know that Asano is intending to work on a (legit) sequel, and that makes me hopeful that Matsuno was talking about that~.

    • Neophoton

If that counts for anything, it’s likely to remain 3DS.

      • puchinri

That is comforting~. I feel like they would keep it on 3DS (and Squeenix has been more prevalent on the DS side of things, at least JRPg-wise).

  • SirRichard

I wouldn’t be surprised, the producer was very passionate about it and seemed to want to dive right into making the sequel, and it did the rounds very well on the sales charts. Given their approach to developing the first one (frequent publicly released demos, incorporating feedback of them into the final game), I’m very excited to see what will come of a sequel!

  • Farid Belkacemi

Great news ! Can’t wait for the first one in Europe :)

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Sounds good. I hope they put out a special edition 3DS bundle for the west. I think this would be one of the few games I would jump on a bundle deal for.

    • デ オオカミ

I wouldn’t put your hopes too high, but there was a limited edition pack with the Japanese release though

      Looking back at it, I really regret not buying it, but it was such an expensive import deal. >_>’;

      • Solomon_Kano

What I wouldn’t give for NOA to offer this for us as well.

        • Neophoton

I feel a wee bit fangirlish for admitting if NOA brought over a collector’s edition (provided it has some changes), I’d pick up one myself despite already having the Japanese one.

          • Solomon_Kano

If I’d gotten the Japanese one, I certainly wouldn’t mind getting it again. It’s that nice!

      • Neophoton

I have that collector’s pack. It’s really lovely, mostly for the artbook and OST alone! Everything else is kind of fluff at that point. Here’s to hoping everyone else can get this as well!

        • デ オオカミ

Damn, I envy you…! I checked the prices again and nin-nin has it at 74,900¥ (580€/$750) nowadays x.x

          • Neophoton

I just saw one on Yahoo Auction selling for ~$100 a few days ago. I don’t see them climbing over $180 these days on there.

      • gamefreak86

Holy shit! Give me a collector’s edition and ill be happier than normal retail. is pay 59.99 for it.

  • That’s cool, I can’t wait for the release here.

  • The-Beast

If this next Bravely Default project ends up being a mobile game, Square I swear I will…

  • Arrei

    Mobily Default incoming?

  • Neophoton

    Booyah. Commence fangirling!

Also, for everyone questioning the platform: Silicon Studio mentioned they’ll keep Bravely Default to 3DS quite some time ago.

  • Slayven19

Good news but I will wait until the system reveal to get excited. The last thing I need is an ISO reveal.

  • Draparde

I love Yoshida’s art X_x. Can’t wait to see what the sequel has in store (though im not looking too much into it since i haven’t played the first lol )

  • Warboss Aohd

kinda want ta see dem finally make a new Ogre Battle since dey brought it up.

  • Kelohmello

Damn, Square. Everyone’s expecting a mobile game before the system’s even been announced. That’s how bad it’s gotten with you.

    • Slayven19

Tis kinda sad when you think about it really. I mean I know mobile phones are becoming the new gaming systems but damn this is sad.

  • Solomon_Kano

Cool, but this really just made me wonder what Matsuno’s up to these days. He’s no longer at L5, so I’ve gotta wonder who he’s aligned with for his next project. Either way, I need another Matsuno RPG in my life.

  • Ethan_Twain

If Mr. Matsuno were to work on a Bravely Default game, that would be cool. I do wish he would work at Square Enix again. Why? Because he is a man of grand vision and distinct style. Crimson Shroud was a good game, but it was not given the kind of budget a Square Enix gives it’s games. I want somebody to give Mr. Matsuno a big big budget to burn so we can get something else to rival his achievement in FF XII.

But of course FF XII went sour partway through and he hasn’t worked with that publisher since. I wonder if it went so sour that he wouldn’t go back to Square? They seem to be pretty strapped for top talent, maybe they’re desperate enough to give him the project parameters he wants?

I feel like that wouldn’t be for a Bravely Default game though… that’s like the one thing they have going for them where it doesn’t seem like they need a competent director to swoop in and save the day.

  • Each person posting here means that they will be getting a copy when it releases in the US/EU so we can get this sequel. consider your post a blood oath to get this game.

  • Alestaos

Has a date been hinted at foe EU yet in 2013. I wanna pre-order this bad boy like yesterday ;)
