Pokémon X And Pokémon Y Introduce Brand New Sky Battles

By Ishaan . June 11, 2013 . 7:08pm

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y have brand new battle features Nintendo and Game Freak revealed this evening at a Pokémon developer discussion in Los Angeles. We’re at the event and have been reporting live, so make sure you catch up with some of what we’ve already covered.

New to Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are sky battles. Only Flying-types or Pokémon with the Levitate ability are capable of participating in these.

We saw a demonstration of a sky battle at the discussion, where a Sky Trainer named Sera was on a cliff and the player, who was on the ground, initiated a battle with her. Sky Trainer Sera whipped out a Noctowl and Talonflame (a new Pokémon—a red bird).

The camera panned animatedly around the fight, going left and even down to the ground, so you could see the battle from the ground looking up. Talonflame used Flame Charge, which is a move where you crash into the enemy and take recoil damage yourself.

Additionally, we noticed that Aerodactyl and Haunter are in the game, too. Haunter used Night Shade and Shadow Ball during the fight. Once the fight was won, the player earned 5,200 money.

Wonder if there is actually some gameplay difference to these battles and ordinary battles, or if it’s just a question of different camera angles.

  • PreyMantis

Water battles would be fun if it’s also included.

  • riceisnice

Doesn’t that sound a little restrictive? What if I don’t like flying or levitating pokemon?

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Then you simply can’t participate in Sky Battles, going by what they said.

      • Renaldi Saputra

Hmm how if we have a pokemon that isn’t a flying type but have wings and can fly?
I wonder what doduo/dodrio will look like in sky battle

        • Bobby Jennings

They can’t sky battle. That simple.

          • Renaldi Saputra

            That’s too bad

        • JustThisOne

          They helicopter it.

          • Renaldi Saputra

so we will see doduo/dodrio spinning its heads while doing sky battle..
            interesting enough
so how could it perform some moves like Tri-Attack?

          • JustThisOne

            … Hmmm.

The torso opens up like a mech and it shoots tri-attack from it’s chest!

          • Renaldi Saputra

            chest? dude, it’s not XV-mon

          • JustThisOne

            Then magic. :<

          • Renaldi Saputra

if it’s magic, then doduo/dodrio’s type should be flying/fairy

          • sd28

            nah its mazinger z

          • Renaldi Saputra

so doduo now is a mecha robot?

  • Godman

Awesome I loved the air battles in Radiant Dawn and since we’re going 3D with Pokemon we’ve might as well throw this in too!

  • VenerableSage

See, restrictions like this are why Levitate being an ability is DUMB. Beedrill can fly just as well or better than a Doduo (which can only JUMP), but it won’t be available since it doesn’t have Levitate while Doduo, by what they said, would be available. Levitate should be an inherent ability for all Pokemon that can fly – a set attribute that isn’t an ability.

Yes, that runs into the problem of some higher “tier” Pokemon that only have Levitate as an ability needing a replacement, but hey, Game Freak hasn’t really cared about balance before to this point, so why not give them actual abilities? Nothing would really change from their (poor) status quo.

Honestly, I just can’t understand Game Freak some times. I’m not a professional game developer and even *I* can come up with better implementations of half of what they stick in Pokemon games that are still simple enough for kids to process.

It will be interesting to see… It would make a lot more sense to add a completely new characteristic that determines whether or not a pokemon can sky battle. They can’t just throw a Gyarados up in the air.

      • VenerableSage

Agreed 100%. But this is Game Freak we’re talking about, so I don’t expect it to make rational sense.

      • Renaldi Saputra

and we don’t even know what will happen if the opponent uses Skill Swap on our Levitated pokemon

      • komiko12

I actually want to see Gyarados in the air. Time for it to use its Flying type.

        • Kai2591

the most terrifying thing I’ll ever see…

    • Ferofax

Haha, it’s always interesting to see people claim better ideas than professionals.

The problem with Levitate is that it affects combat. If it was just a fluff ability that didn’t totally negate attacks, then yeah, feel free to slap it on everyone. It’s a balance issue. But of course, I’m sure you’ve already thought of that, since you can obviously come up with better implementations than a professional game developer.

      • VenerableSage

Here’s what I previously came up with from mid-May when I originally had the thought:

        - Turn Levitate into an automatic attribute for Pokemon that can stay in the air (not an ability any longer)

        – Example: Fearow would have Levitate and still be Normal/Flying; Dodrio would still be Normal/Flying but DOESN’T have Levitate

        – Gravity and Iron Ball turn Levitate off; Flying-type Pokemon keep their typing but cannot use Fly or Sky Attack; Roost turns off both Levitate as well

        – Flying-type Pokemon that don’t have Levitate have a 50% chance for Ground moves to fail – Flying-types w/ Levitate retain the current 100% avoid rate against Ground moves

        – Gravity and Iron Ball also make Ground moves have 100% of their normal accuracy on Flying types without Levitate

        – Beedrill would have Levitate, Venomoth would have Levitate, Flygon still has Levitate and gets a new ability, etc.

Doesn’t seem overly complicated to me, so long as the game marks that a Pokemon has the trait in their Status page and explains how it works.

  • LaserVision

There are so many Pokemon now that they could get away with releasing a game just flying Pokemon and it would have a decent sized Pokedex.

  • Go2hell66

that sounds pretty epic, i want to see it in action

  • sd28

last time i check flame charge increases speed are you sure it wasn’t flare blitz

  • French

    I love pokemon

  • haunterfly0806

what will happen to a giratina holding a griseous orb if the item was stolen in a sky battle?
