By Ishaan . June 13, 2013 . 12:15pm

The two new Super Smash Bros. games for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U will not feature the tripping mechanic that was present in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Speaking with Kotaku, Super Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai confirmed: “To answer quite frankly, it will not return.”

Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS and Wii U are slated for release in 2014.

I’m getting the WiiU for sure but I can’t see me really picking up the 3DS version.

    • Guest

opposite here, the Wii U version is useless unless you are in front of a TV

      • landlock

Which is exactly where I plan to be. :)

        • Guest

I go on road trips alot….

          • landlock

It’s not nice to edit after I’ve already replied. :)

          • JoJo_649

            I WILL GET BOTH!!!

Where else would you want to play Super Smash Bros.? It is the ultimate sofa game.

      • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

You can play the game on the Gamepad just fine. That way, you can keep playing the game, if someone decides to hog your TV.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Well I guess those competitive players will be happy. Tripping has messed me up a few times, but it actually saved me more than got me hurt lol

    • Asura

Competitive players won’t be happy with Sakurai with that alone. Maybe if he brings back L-cancelling we’ll rejoice a little.

      • Slayven19

The game does have L cancelling. It was mentioned in an interview but this is a lot for this place to keep up with because there are different sites giving different interviews.

  • idrawrobots

    Lame.

    • idrawrobots

You all are way too serious.

  • Rasputing

Yay! That pointless mechanic is gone. I always hated it. It was basically Sakurai saying “You’re having fun wrong!” to the competitive smash community.

  • MasterScrub

    YES

  • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

I’m hoping the influence of the Tekken and SoulCalibur guys is leading Sakurai to make the game more inviting to competitive players like Melee was – without sacrificing the accessibility and casual-friendliness of the previous games, of course.

  • Natat

YES, THANK YOU. Now just add some hitstun to moves again so combos are actually possible and I will love this game.

  • darryl scott
  • Flandre Scarlet

Oh thank god. A completely random mechanic that served no purpose is gone.

  • Guest

    GOTTA GO FA- *trips*

  • AuraGuyChris

The game has become less realistic!

    SCREW REALISM!

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    The conclusion. tripping. Is. lame. I’m happy they took it out >:}

  • puchinri

    I actually wasn’t that bad off with tripping. But I guess that isn’t the norm. Or maybe it’s just been that long since I’ve played and I’m not remembering right. ^u^;

    • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

i didnt have a huge issue with it either. even though i played as “hardcore” as one could, i liked the unexpected element of tripping as well as peoples’ rage when they would trip.

      • puchinri

        Same here~. >u<

        • http://www.ihasnowebsitez.com Satonaka CP-Four

Exactly, there wasn’t anything wrong with the mechanic, it was the people trying to turn this into a tournament fighter that blew the most gaskets with it. Even though this game is a ‘brawler’ meant for fun and not your typical ‘fighter’ game where tournaments exist, but sadly, they still try to turn it into one of those games.

          /le sigh

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

Well to be honest at least they didn’t try to make “Sonic The Fighters” into a tournament fighting game.

          • Draparde

The way i see it is that, the game is meant to be played to have fun. those people that get competitive with the game have fun playing in that style.

those who like playing it as a brawler have fun doing it in that way. the game has many options of play for that very reason.

    • http://vanilladice.deviantart.com/ Dice

It just sucked that it was random and 100% pointless other than to the detriment of a good match.

    • idrawrobots

Items are point less too, they should get rid of the items. I hate rubberbanding.

      • Spirit Macardi

You can… You just select “No Items” when setting up a match. It’s been an option in literally every installment.

      • http://www.ihasnowebsitez.com Satonaka CP-Four

Items are part of the game, sure you can turn them off, but then you’re not playing the full game.

      • Time Sage

        Real Men use items.

  • FFmax

Thank god that was an annoying and frankly unnecessary mechanic. Why did they add that in Brawl anyway?

    • Time Sage

To basicly tell the competive commuinity “Chill out and have fun instead of worrying about teirs and stuff

  • Prinnydoom

The most useless part of the entire game. -__- A cause for many losses during my time.

  • http://vanilladice.deviantart.com/ Dice

    Thank f**k.

  • ZEROthefirst

Here I was afraid it was going to make it back because now the useless and extremely annoying at times tripping is in the new Animal Crossing. Wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t happen so often <.<

  • MrJechgo

Thank God, that was the most frustrating mecanic ever…

  • Spirit Macardi

I skipped on Brawl, so I never knew what people were talking about with “tripping” in the first place. Whatever though, I guess it’s cool that it’s gone.

I’m more interested in hearing about what WILL be returning though, as well as what new stuff will be added.

  • ronin4life

That the WiiU and 3ds versions may not see simultaneous release was another nugget from Sakurai.

  • Zharkiel

Because God forbid we have funny stuff in our games. Smash was never really a super serious fighter, and tripping just added to the whole “party” game thing Brawl had. This is what I feared the most when they got the Tekken guys on board, I don’t want Smash to be another serious fighter.

    • Slayven19

Its not but tripping was never in smash before brawl. Tripping just serves no purpose like at all.

    • XiaomuArisu

Tripping was just a random gimmick.
      Never needed that.

    • RisukuAozora

make tripping an on/off option… then everyone’s happy!

      • Ferofax

        Sakurai already said it’s out.

        • RisukuAozora

          I can read, Ferofax.
Still it’d be an ideal option for some people that’d (for some reason) still want tripping.

  • James Enk

don’t have a problem with it being removed I never hated it but sometimes it was happening too frequent

  • http://www.youtube.com/Lyonharvestmoonfan Eduardo Rocha

I didn’t hated or disliked this feature that much but it felt pointless, I’m glad they removed it for the next SSB. Now, all I want to hear are combos! I don’t mean great combos, but being able to conect two attacks at least would be great.

  • GHAmer

Mega Man is aiming at the Samus’ crotch in the screenshot LOL

  • Tonton Ramos

I’m glad tripping is gone and we really need to add something that made Melee successful and great.

  • fireemblembeast

Awww, but I liked it when the guy coming after you tripped and gave you time to run away! I even laugh when it happens to me, lol.

  • Go2hell66

    Halleluyah!

  • $29082171

    Buff Jigglypuff!

  • wahyudil

    tripping? is there any?

  • Linhua

… annnnnnd Megaman is going for the Crotch Shot… Pikachu eagerly awaiting his turn.

  • Symbol de Au
  • Armane

Are you implying tripping is fun? A mechanic designed to stop players from playing a specific way is fun? You need to evaluate your concept of fun if that’s what you’re saying.

  • Symbol de Au

No I was referring to the “casual scum” and “what happened to winning” parts of that comment.

  • Armane

I don’t really see how the trope applies when you take those comments out of context, but fair enough, thanks for explaining yourself.
