Pokémon X And Pokémon Y Give You A Group Of New Friends

By Ishaan . June 14, 2013 . 8:30am

The Pokémon Company has shared details on the first Gym Leader in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, along with information on even more new characters, Pokémon and other details.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y begin in Vaniville town. Once you step out of your house (above), you’ll soon run into friends who will be embarking on their own Pokémon journey across the Kalos region with you. There are four of these characters:

  • Shauna is an incredibly energetic girl who is coming along on the journey to find a dream of her own. She’s friendly and outgoing, and seems to genuinely enjoy all the curiosities you’ll come across on your journey.

  • Tierno is the dancer of the group and wants more than anything to create a dance team with his Pokémon. Strong, kind, and light on his feet, Tierno gets easily distracted by watching opposing Pokémon during battles because he’s too busy trying to incorporate Pokémon moves into his dances.

  • Trevor bursts with curiosity about the world around him. He’s an excellent student, and very competitive, wanting to be the first of the group to complete his Pokédex.

  • Serena (if you pick male) or Calem (if you play as a girl) lives next door to you in Vaniville Town. This character has a passion to become a powerful Pokémon Trainer and sets out on the journey to accomplish that dream. (That’s them in the screenshots above.)

The first Gym Leader you encounter is Viola, in Santalune City, a pleasant place known for its large fountain and park benches. You also bump into her sister, Alexa. In addition to being a Gym Leader, Viola also happens to be a photographer who specializes in Pokémon photography.

The interior of Viola’s Gym is constructed from spiderweb-like threads.

Also, we now know of another few Pokémon in the game—Litleo, Falabébé, Scatterbug and Vivillon. Details on them are as follows:

Litleo is a young, hot-blooded Pokémon that is always ready for a battle. A Fire- and Normal-type Pokémon, Litleo’s red mane blazes with heat during battle, which burns hotter when it battles very strong opponents. Litleo knows a new Normal-type move in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, Noble Roar. Useful against strong opponents, Noble Roar intimidates targets and lowers their Attack stat.

Debuting as a Fairy-type Pokémon along with Sylveon, Flabébé lives atop a flower that it chooses soon after it’s born and will care for its entire life. Players may see different Flabébé holding flowers of different colors when encountering them in the wild. Flabébé is able to draw forth hidden powers that lie within its flower and use those powers in moves while battling. Flabébé knows Fairy Wind, a Fairy-type move debuting inPokémon X and Pokémon Y that summons a wind that blasts an opponent as it attacks. Like all Fairy-type moves, it’s super effective against Dragon-type Pokémon.

As Pokémon evolve, they take on new appearances and learn new moves. Pokémon X and Pokémon Y will introduce the Bug-type Pokémon Scatterbug. Scatterbug knows String Shot, a Bug-type move that can lower the Speed stat of opposing Pokémon.

Scatterbug evolves into Spewpa, another new Bug-type Pokémon that can withstand half-hearted attacks due to its stiff, fur-covered body. Use the Normal-type move Protect at a beginning of a turn to protect Spewpa from moves used against it on that turn.

The final evolved form of Scatterbug, which was revealed earlier this week, is the new Bug- and Flying-type Pokémon Vivillon. It’s said there’s a secret behind the colorful decorative pattern on Vivillon’s wings, which it uses to scatter its scales or create a strong wind to attack. Vivillon can learn Struggle Bug, a Bug-type move that lowers the Special Attack of any opposing Pokémon it hits, so the move not only causes damage but also reduces the damage inflicted on Vivillon from certain moves during battle.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are slated for release on October 12th worldwide.

I rather have Serena as my partner / fan tagging along throughout the game (Male MC).
Those three have weird hairstyles, plus having a ponytail is win for me.

  • Symbol de Au

It says she’s willing to teach you about photography. I wonder if this means we can photograph pokemon…

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      • JustThisOne

    • J_Joestar

maybe it is an additional function of Pokemonamie?

  • With friends like these……… Na, na I kid. I like how they look, and glad they introduced some new characters. On a side note all their hairstyles look FABULOUS lol =P

I especially love Shauna’s hair because of the star her hair makes on her forehead lol =^_^=

  • Frankie

This is what Pokemon should have been from the beginning but could not because of technology. It is a shame they are making such medicore Pokemon now and ruining it.

  • Virevolte

They avoid some easy clichés with Trevor and Tierno. Good job.

    • Actually, they are the usual “Chubby/Short/Girl(probably rich)” trio in most Anime shows, so I don’t think so.

      • Virevolte

But the chubby one is smart, not dumb and pushy. The short one likes to dance and isn’t much of a brain or a coward. It’s why I was saying this.

        • Who said the Chubby one is always dumb? And vice versa for the short one? But nevermind that.

          • Virevolte

Ho, I was just thinking that it’s often “Chubby kid = stupid brute”, “Short kid = weak, smart, not brave”.

Maybe my references are not accurate. ^^

          • Symbol de Au

Actually short kid is weak and smart but I’m not sure about not being brave. The official website says that he’s really curious but he could use some practice in his battling so it seems weak/smart to me.

          • Virevolte

Raaah, damn it. So I’m totally wrong. Sorry, i’m not reading in my native language and… my comprehension seems somewhat limited. ^^”

        • Alexander Marquis Starkey

I’m pretty sure it’s the chubby one that likes to dance.

        • pressstart

It says the dancer is strong. That sounds like it’s the chubby one is the dancer.

          • Virevolte

Since the descriptions are starting with the girl, I was assuming it was from right to left. The “light on his feets” has confused me too. I don’t know who is who. ^^”

        • Tierno is the big guy.

    • kmantle

I don’t know if it’s a clichè, but having a big and strong but kind guy sound like one, especially if his name’s ‘Tierno’ (spanish for ‘softie’ or ‘cutie’)

Big guys who are friends with a main character are either bullies or softies

  • Nightmesh

Isn’t this what people have been asking for since the Anime? I remember being very disappointed when Brock didn’t follow me. Actually, I’m still a little irritated by that. YOU LIED TO ME ANIME! LIESSS!

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

      Anime came after the game

  • I was already getting it anyway, but brown girl that accompanies me solidifies my decision to do so~

    • Kai2591

brown hair girl AND ponytail girl for me ;)

btw, I wonder if one of them (or all of them?) will follow us all the way throughout the game to the end?

btw2, who is that character in your picture?

      • I hope so, it’d be a lot more lively that way, especially considering your character can’t talk! w

        She’s Valvrave-tan, from the anime Valvrave The Liberator~ :3

        • Kai2591

our character can’t talk!? aww man would’ve been better if s/he could!

          ah, I see. Thanks.

  • Virevolte

“Vaniville town”, it’s like saying : Vanitown town. =)

  • MKK2004

    Litleo = Growlithe
    Scatterbug = Caterpie
    Spewpa = Metapod
    Vivillon = Butterfree

    Sure is origin huh….

    • Cain Yamedera

Firstly Litleo looks nothing like Growlithe and just because some pokemon resemble Insects doesn’t automatically make them rip-offs of older bug Pokemon, Larvesta and Volcarona for example look nothing like Venonat or Venomoth and secondly if any Pokemon look unoriginal it would be the original 151 as they are just animals with a few adjustments to them.

    • Yuriangels

But Litleo is a lion right!?!

      • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

A lot of people have been making a comparison of it to a manticore because of its tail, which I would love greatly.

    • Nanaki

This has been done before in previous generations, and trainers still use them. Originals are a good concept to build off of.

    • J_Joestar

Litleo may be more like a Fire-type Shinx

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Flabébé IS SO CITE!! its like Spinda, none of them will be alike :D

I bet my 1st shiny Pokemon, Shauna is going to be one of Ash’s followers

    • LightGenx

If they reintroduced Pokemon musicals or something similar for 6th gen, I could easily see Tierno becoming one of Ash’s companions with his dream of creating a dance team.

    • Steven Higgins

Eh, they usually (not always but usually) go with the main female so it will more likely be Serena.

  • Highasthesky

I don’t get it people are reacting like this is something new, isn’t this just the Cheren and Bianca of this game?

    • biskmater

yes, but now there are a more.

    • Nanaki

People always react to something new.
I’m surprised you aren’t in the least bit excited, or are you?

      • Highasthesky

“Isn’t this what people have been asking for since the Anime?” This comment makes me believe there is something new but all i see is the same. While i’m excited to see new characters, like gym leaders they’re expected.

  • YoshEE

Finally a opposite sex rival that havent been used since 3rd gen right? Man I can’t wait for this game >.<

    • Krisi92

Umm… there have been opposite sex rivals in the 4th and 5th gen, too…

      • 4th gen, though it focused more on Barry had a opposite sex rival. 5th… yah they stopped doing it. But it is back for the 6th.

        • Krisi92

4th gen had Dawn and Lyra. I know they focused more on Barry and Silver, but they were there, too. And BW had Bianca.

How are you so certain that 6th gen won’t focus more on the boy?

          • Bianca doesn’t count. What do you mean focus on the boy. There is up to three boys and up to two girls.

          • Krisi92

Okay, then focus on the boys.
And how does Bianca not count? She was as important as Cheren, your other rival.

          • She’s not the “opposite” gender rival. That would be the other protagonist you didn’t choose.

          • YoshEE

Ik they were there but they just a helping teaming up with the player. And by opposite sex i mean having a rival that is opposite sex from the player choice of male or female like in 3rd gen.

  • Will be getting both versions! I can’t wait to get Vivillon – the official artwork has really grow on me.

  • Sango

Please give a us legit rival. The last real rival we a had imo was Silver.

    • Rivals = Sore loser douchebags?

I enjoyed having Barry and Hugh as rivals, especially Hugh.

      • Sango

No, rivals that are competitive. Your rival doesn’t need to be a douchebag. Barry and Hugh felt more like minor characters to me.

        • I fail to see how Barry is not competitive since he was always fining you he’s gonna beat the league first and honestly I’ve didn’t saw Silver as a competitive rival, more like a lousy douchebag with daddy issues that wanted to beat Team Rocket, he would only fight you cause he was in the way. Hugh while he had his own objective he helped you a lot in crumbling Neo Team Plasma, a major threat in the game. His Pokemon were strong and his theme is one of the most awesome ones since Gen 2.

And oddly, rivals post Gen 2 weren’t douche so I’d say you do like douchebag rivals or else nostalgia.

          • Sango

I’m not sure what “fining” you is. Was that a catch phrase he used? Been awhile since I played gen4. Like I said before, the rivals in latter gens feel more like minor support characters rather than rivals. I’m a competitive guy in real life. Grew up playing sports. I like a smug attitude and a little bit of trash talking.

          • KingRuff

Silver was an ass, plain and simple. He wasn’t competitive, he just hated you for no real reason. I gotta say that the friendly competition of newer rivals is a lot better than some jerk who looks down on you even when you win. Still, even Blue with his “smell ya later” atttitude was a better rival than Silver. At least he won the Pokemon League and could back up his trash talk.

          • Sango

Your opinion. That’s fine. And yes, Blue was a better rival.

    • Haseyo

I don’t even consider Silver a rival. I never battled you because he wanted to, merely because you were in the way. Hell, Sapphire was more of a rival because she at least did want to race to discover stuff first.

Not all rivals have to have a love/hate relationship. Hugh was far more of a rival than Silver.

  • TruSpindash

I loved the trio dynamic that Black and White created with Bianca and Cheren so I am interested to see how they handle having a whole group of friends/rivals showing up throughout the game.

Also loving all the new Pokemon, I already know that cub Pokemon is going to have an amazing final evolution.

  • Shadowman

I can’t wait for this game, My 3DS is ready.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Delicious Viola. I love those eyebrows

  • fireemblembeast

    Trevor…the trap >_>;
Also I love how now they can make character models look thin or fat! XD

  • Sweet Sui ♥

I saw something on one of the Pokemon XY Tumblr pages comparing these two and now I can’t unsee the similarities~
That Vanillite T-shirt… oh, lol xD

  • DarthSithZero

I have nothing important to say, I just love Pokemon and I can’t get enough

  • Göran Isacson

Honestly, I just kinda love how the big guy is a DANCER… and mentioned to be GOOD at it too! Like, how often do we see a big character that’s not some kind of lazy walking fat joke? Props Nintendo. Props.

    • Steven Higgins

From the way he dresses and cuts his hair, I’m guessing he specializes in break-dancing. He’s got that urban hip-hop look.

  • So, spider-web in Gym. Hint that she could be a Bug Type specialist.

I am also one of those who are wishing that a Fairy Type Gym Leader would look like this:

    • komiko12

I think Fairy type Trainer would be part of the Elite Four.

  • Solomon_Kano

    Litleo looking good.

  • Gilgamesh2025

Oh my gosh, that hairstyle … !!

  • Steven Higgins

This is the largest number of friends/rivals yet! Poke-Sentai!
Like the name Serena, but not crazy about Calem. Hmmm, maybe they should have gone with Xavier and Yvonne? Or perhaps Xander and Yasmin?
I wonder if “VaniVille ” Comes from “Vanilla” as in ordinary/plain?
Dude! Is that a Rhyhorn outside the house!? Or, is it just a statue?

Whoa. I think they ARE going for a Poke-Sentai! Pink is the Girl, Yellow is the chubby one (Jetman) Green is the brainy one (Voltron)! Aww man, now i kind of want a Super Sentai-esque costume set to be in this game.

  • haunterfly0806

so I’m guessing Serena/Calem is your main rival while the others are the minor rivals

since in most of the games, your rival is always your neighbor

    • Krisi92

In most of the games, always? :D How does that work?

Oh, how fondly I remember Silver from Gold/Silver/Crystal, my next-door neighbor…

  • Vash bane

so now gender effects your rival ..
still a better love story that twilight..

    • Guest

      whut? *you don’t say..
      that’s an old news

    • Renaldi Saputra

if you choose male then your rival will be female and also the vice versa..
huh? I think it’s an old news..

  • Renaldi Saputra

I’m guessing maybe Jirachi will be the next fairy type

  • Brion Valkerion

Seems like they might have been listening about the insane amount of Water types vs. others, namely fire.

  • FedeChart

I like their designs, they dont look that menacing though.

I wonder who gets which starter
