Level-5′s Youkai Are Essentially Like Ghostly Pokémon

By Spencer . June 20, 2013 . 4:36pm

youkaiw-02Players can catch over 200 kinds of youkai, Japanese folklore spirits, In Youkai Watch. Nogappa pictured on the right creates mega waterfalls. Komasan fires spirit energy and Jinmen Inu (literally human faced dog)… lies on the floor. Youkai join players in battle and level up after fights. Similar to Pokémon, youkai can evolve.

Each youkai has a different rank like the hungry Himoji starts at rank E, but can level up to a B rank youkai called Kuiiji. The mosquito-like Negatiboon can evolve into a C rank spirit. Some evolutions have special conditions. Jibanyan, a cat-like creature Level-5 revealed early on, can evolve into the suave Warunyan.

When you’re not catching youkai you can live a regular life with your friends. One of Youkai Watch’s scenes has Keeta and Fumi watching fireworks from their school’s roof.

Youkai Watch also has an augmented reality camera app to play with. Mysterious Lens takes a photo and "reveals" unseen youkai. If you find a youkai you’ll get an item to use in game.

I friggin adore the character designs in this. I’d pre-order but my current backlog is too big. Bah!

  • Enzo

They seriously need to bring this game over. I would play it.

  • Pedro Tavares

    GIIIIIIIIIIIIEF

  • Warboss Aohd

it’s pokemon wit ghostz? never would ‘ave guessed.

in all seriousness though humiez, dis game lookz like it haz potential.

  • Phoenix Wright

This looks cool. Pokemon is too afraid to change its formula too much. This looks like it could be a good step up from it.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

uhPokemon X and Y is a big change

      • Renaldi Saputra

        not really much I think..
it only adds fairy type, then making sky battle and horde battle.. it’s just like accessories of the game..
even so, the formula still doesn’t change.. they are still limited to 4 moves, 6 pokemon limit to bring, and so on..

the only big change of formula in pokemon was when the progress of gen 3 to gen 4

        • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

adding new type, move, and new abilities change formula.

          • Renaldi Saputra

yep, but it doesn’t do that much..
changing formula is when you change the formula of pokemon main series into pokemon dungeon series or another RPG series..
            for example:
            1. now your pokemon can do normal attack besides of using PP for moves
            2. all moves that do no damage (for example ghost to normal, ground to flying, psychic to dark/evil) now can do damage, but only 1/4x..
            3. you can enhance moves by using item, so the power increases.. for example: fire blast becoming fire blast +1
            4. now pokemon have MP, so PP are no longer exist
            5. pokemon can do jogress evolve, resulting a new stronger pokemon
            6. pokemon can degenerate beside of evolve
            .
            .
            etc..

            @renaldisaputra:disqus & @DanielJeanbaptiste:disqus
Graphics and main character customization too :3
I think they said something about battles only allowing certain types like flying or ones that can levitate(hope there’s more special fights like this). There’s also the whole HORDE thing with random encounters. That’s kind of big xD

Overall tactics can completely change thanks to that. I’m still trying to figure out if the attacks will work like a team battle. Like surf hitting all of them, but that’s a whole different conversation X3

But regardless, i’m pretty excited for both of these. Youkai Pokemon? SOLD!
Just bring dem poltergeists OVER!(~ `ω´)~

          • Renaldi Saputra

for me, that’s not a big change of formula, only formula addition..
if there’s a change of formula, then the previous formula should be different from now on.. for example: in gen 5, fire is super effective to grass, but now in gen 6 it’s no longer super effective against that..

until now, I haven’t seen many changes in X&Y comparing to previous Black&White, only improvements that mostly I see..

          • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

Fairy type balance Dragon type in Pokemon. The formula change. Gardevoir is a Fairy Type. It will be Dragon Pokemon now. Fomula changed. Poison beats Fairy instead of only hitting Grass now.

          • Renaldi Saputra

I kind of agree for that Gardevoir and Marill second type addition.. however, as I said before, for me it doesn’t do that much of formula changes.. even though there’s quite many formula improvements in it..

I’ve been playing pokemon since the gold version (didn’t play red and blue and yellow, but I knew some info in it), the biggest change I’ve experienced was when I started to play the gen 4 (diamond/pearl/platinum)

          • wharcraff

Is Clefairy going to be fairy type as well?

          • Renaldi Saputra

oh yes, forgot about it.. from Normal into Normal/Fairy..
            second type addition

    • Enzo

They aren’t afraid to change the formula. It goes under the whole “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” category. They know the people WANT the same formula. They’re just changing a lot of OTHER elements all around it with X and Y. You’d have to be a fool to not see how many things they have changed with X and Y while keeping true to their original roots.

      • Renaldi Saputra

pokemon always changes its own main formula for its minor games like mystery dungeon or conquest series..
he said “pokemon is too afraid to change ‘too much’” in XY
so I think he got a point in it

        • Enzo

I don’t think the word “afraid” is the correct word to use here. People return to pokemon (I would know, a very large number of people I know confirmed this) specifically for the formula they don’t change. AKA the four moves, the types being weak to so on, carrying 6 pokemon, the general “catch them all” thing. Most fans (very many non-vocal) do NOT want those to change.

For those who do want change, there are those spin-offs. But have you ever noticed how significantly lower those games sell? It’s obvious what the people/fans want. Why change what sells?

          • Renaldi Saputra

well, you’re right.. It’s for money after all

  • Guest

I liked think of it more as a ghostly SMT for kids

    • Hinataharem

Not trying to be a jerk, but I don’t see a lot of SMT in this at all, outside of having monsters that fight for your cause. Even if SMT did it first, this is much more like Pokemon

      • Renaldi Saputra

you haven’t seen SMT Devil Children?
I think he’s kinda right about it..

        • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

Pokemon came 1995 that game came 2000

          • Renaldi Saputra

            i knew that..
both Pokemon and Devil Children have quite many similarities..
if pokemon had pokeball, Devil Children had Devilizer..

        • Hinataharem

I have seen Devil Children. I also played Demikids Dark. Regardless, its more like Pokemon than SMT, since Demikids/Children tried to be more like Pokemon

          • Renaldi Saputra

well, it’s aimed for kids under 10 yrs old probably so that’s reasonable, except for some of the monsters being darker and creepier.. ohh, it’s SMT after all..

    • Renaldi Saputra

SMT for kids? do u mean Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children a.k.a. DemiKids?

  • Shane Guidaboni
