Japan Won’t Get Assassin’s Creed II Or Fable III With Games For Gold Promotion

Following in the footsteps of PlayStation Plus, Microsoft is giving away two video games to Xbox Live Gold members for the rest of 2013. Right now, you can get Fable III to keep as a bonus with a paid Xbox Live membership.

… if you’re in the West. Japan has a different list of Games With Gold titles. This month’s Games With Gold title in Japan is JoyRide Turbo, an Xbox Live Arcade game. Assassin’s Creed II is on deck next month, but Ubisoft’s game won’t be available in Japan. Microsoft will not distribute any CERO Z (it’s like Japan’s ESRB AO rating) titles as part of Games With Gold and Assassin’s Creed II as well as Fable III are CERO Z games.

Japan has tighter restrictions than I thought.

I had thought this was going to be an article about how Microsoft isn’t going to have Xbox One in Japan, so they dropped it, but no, it’s a Japan thing. Unexpected.

Yep, very strict.. and if those games are on XBLA, they would need to be purchased by an adult w/ a credit card instead of MS points (say Dead Rising Case Zero). Also the gore and some textures in Cero Z games like Tomb Raider or the Last of Us were unfortunately censored too.

      • Sardorim

Well, it’s a good thing they’re dropping the point system and using real currency, right?

        • Aoshi00

Whether MS point or currency buying Cero Z games would most likely still require a credit card as age verification.. I wish they would continue with points

i doubt Japan cares for these 2 two games which most people have already played……plus you can pick them up for next to nothing.

    • Manny Being Manny

Most people in Japan haven’t played these, they’re niche titles over there. Not only the Z rating, but the majority of Western AAA games receive very little notice over there (kinda like JRPGs over here).

Fable 3 did especially bad, only selling 50k copies.

So this just means there’s even less incentive for anyone in Japan to get a 360. Microsoft sure knows how to market outside of the West.

Just stop trying to westernize Japan already. Capcom and SE have already been westernized, and I don’t like it.

  • John Esteves

I don’t think Japan really cares, and the games look pretty much like Microsoft is giving the land of the rising sun the short end of the stick.

PSN+ does this already, I’m not sure why it would be any different for XBL. The different regions decide which games will be dished out for the freebies.
