Dreamfall Chapters Headed To Next-Gen Consoles; Wii U Is A Maybe

Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey is currently in development for PC, but the game is also likely headed to next-gen consoles, according to lead developer Ragnar Tørnquist.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Tørnquist shared, “We are preparing to go to consoles, without officially announcing anything. We are keen on getting this game to as many people as possible.”

Negotiations seem the farthest along with Sony thus far, with Microsoft and Nintendo in talks with the development studio, Red Thread Games. While an Xbox One release seems likely, the Wii U may or may not end up getting the game.

“We are also in dialogue with Nintendo,” Tørnquist revealed. “We’re going to be looking at it. We can’t make any promises because the the Wii U, it’s underpowered compared to the next-gen consoles and PC obviously—I don’t think that’s a secret or Nintendo would get upset at me.”

“We’re going to look at getting the game running on Wii U and then we’ll make decisions depending on how that goes and what we see the market possibilities are doing. Like I said, we don’t want to exclude anything, so we’ll try anything.”

You can watch a recent development panel from the Rezzed 2013 event during which Tornquist and other members of the development team discussed new content in Dreamfall Chapters, courtesy of Eurogamer, above.

“We are preparing to go to consoles, without officially announcing anything. We are keen on getting this to as many people as possible.”
I think you’re missing a couple quotation marks.
And they should port the first game.

If I were to buy it anywhere it would be on wii U, so I hope to see it there. It should be able to run it just fine
edit: I got a -1, I guess it might seem a bit inflammatory, it wasn’t’ meant to be. I just don’t plan on getting a PS4 for awhile (I will though) so if I were to play it anywhere it would have to be there. Sorry

Certainly it could run it, I mean the game is going to be on mobiles and tablets, why not on Wii U?

Banda mafia, rubber duckys, talking trash cans and child robots on suicide missions (and a grate story most likely). I’m loving this.
    So glad I’m a backer.

Never played the original, but heard good things. So I guess I’d give this a look if it makes it to PS4.

While I don’t really have any interest in this game or the Wii U, I find their statement about the Wii U rather puzzling. Not beacuse I think that what they said was wrong, but beacuse of the implication that this somehow represents a barrier to releasing the game for the system.

Yes, the Wii U isn’t a very powerful system, but Dreamfall Chapters is a game that is being made on a relatively small budget. Considering this (and the footage shown so far), I seriously doubt that the game will necessitate extremely powerful hardware. On top of that, the game uses the Unity engine, which is supported on the Wii U.

Overall, I can’t help but think that this was just their way of saying “we’re not sure if it’s worth it”.

Yeah, I don’t really understand the whole idea of the Wii U being underpowered if some developers can port cross-gen games to the Xbox and PS3. The CPU might be a bit slower than your average last gen console, but the GPU would likely be up to the task. If all of the info on the GPU specs were true (E6760), it would essentially be a desktop 88/9800 Geforce class card.

Sure it might struggle in Crysis, but anything else you throw at it, I’m sure it would play at lower settings on the console. I think it’s essentially developers avoiding Nintendo’s machine like they did the Vita previously because of the lack of audience. It’s not the first time I’ve seen this happen.

I’ll buy it on any platform if Zoe gets her face back..

The last game was pretty cool… for a PC title.

I am gonna play this on PS4 and hope the 2 previous games will release on PS4 also.
