<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week, Sony released Naughty Dog’s latest game, The Last of Us, in Japan, and it got off to a good start with over 117,000 copies sold in its first week. Here’s how it compares to first-week sales of Naughty Dog’s previous PS3 games:

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune – 16,702

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – 53,827

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception – 124,989

That puts The Last of Us right behind the highest-debuting Uncharted game in Japan to date. Not too shabby at all.

Other new releases for the week included Hyperdimension Idol Neptunia PP and Farewell Umihara Kawase. Meanwhile, Shin Megami Tensei IV appears to have sold through its first shipment and is likely on its second.

I guess we can safely conclude, as the ps3 market grew, sales of naughty dog games rose.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

PS3 market is more or less maxed in Japan now. You see when TLOU out this week, PS3 number does not change much too.

  • DesmaX

Whoa, didn’t know Uncharted 3 sold even better on it’s first week. Thanks, Ishaan.

Brought my copy, now I wait for it to arrive

  • Solomon_Kano

I wonder what caused that boom in Naughty Dog’s sales. It’s pretty crazy that each Uncharted game did more than double what its predecessor did. Glad to see that love for Uncharted spilled over to Naughty Dog’s newest IP.

Good on HDIN as well. Compile Heart sees a pretty consistent level of success on Vita.

    • malek86

Quality and hype, I guess? COD games sales have also increased a lot compared to the beginning of the generation.

      • Solomon_Kano

True, COD has picked up greatly. I just remembered Sony whipped up a pretty snazzy marketing campaign for Uncharted 3 as well. Had Harrison Ford and everything.

        • Neow Shau Jin

That and coupled with Uncharted 2 earned unprecedented amount, Plus PS3 slim was released at the year Uncharted 2 was released so it helps drive up PS3’s install base for the 2 years leading up to Uncharted 3

      • Bob Obb

I think you can thank all the Americans and Europeans living abroad for the COD (and Xbox 360) sales in Japan :p

        • malek86

Well, in that case, I imagine it would be the same for TLOU :P

  • Brimfyre

I wonder if Ellen Page’s rant will hurt or help sales. I was surprised when NBC news picked up the story yesterday on their front page.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

The Last of Us is an amazing game (dare say best on the PS3 or even any system this gen), so I’m glad it’s doing good numbers globally. Can’t wait for whatever side-story DLC they have planned for it.

Otherwise, another week dominated by the 3DS, though I’m surprised to see Resident Evil Revelations PS3 still on the list.

  • Wow. Good for Farewell Umihara Kawase. Really excited to see this one.

    • AkuLord3

Yeah, happy its doing decently well

  • malek86

First week sales for Neptune games keep on being always the same, pretty much. They are holding that fanbase tight, it seems. I’m expecting similar numbers for HDN1 and whatever else they have in the pipeline.

  • MrTyrant

GREAT! I love Last of Us. Im playing it right now and It’s amazing!

  • badmoogle

Why there are no reports of PS3 hardware sales anymore?

    • Nightmare637

I think its because of the reveal of Next gen consoles.

      • badmoogle

PS4 hasn’t been released yet so PS3 sales are still relevant.

  • Nice. I beat The Last Of Us within 2 days of getting it. Such a great game, and glad to see it’s doing well.

    • Mithfalath

Is it short, or did you just go 24/2 on it? lol.

      • No it’s not short. It’s a good legnth. I just played the hell out of it lol

  • Aoshi00

I’m about half way into the game, thrilling and immersive experience, the intro was so good.. Got the artbook too, wish I had gotten the survivor edition with the steelbook. I imported the Jpn ver as well just to hear yamadera kouichi :) even though the head crush and such gore are censored.. I hope more Jpn gamers would get to taste high quality western games like this. graphics just look amazing, like when Joel s swimming under water…

  • ragingmerifes

God, I so want to see Naughty Dog working with the PS4 after loving TLoU…

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Good job for ND here. They deserve the sales.^_^

And Namco Bandai is also doing a great job on Kuma Tomo there. I mean who hate a teddy bear breeding game.^_^

……..Umihara Kawase, plizzzzz go higher there.T_T

  • Man, I really hope the Wii U gets a major game release soon. Just over 5k sales? That’s pretty. Sad.

    • EggmaniMN

Actually that isn’t even that bad seeing as it’s had literally zero marketing in Japan and no games coming out at all. It’s been selling 5000-6000 every week for quite some time and things can really only pick up over there as stuff begins again.

      • I guess in that perspective, it’s fine. I just can’t wait for TGS or something to roll around and for Nintendo to really push their stuff to the Japanese audience as well.

  • Already beat The Last of Us on hard and completed all Multiplayer trophy. Saw a lot of Japanese in Multiplayer, they seems like the game and thankfully they’re not uber-godlike in Multiplayer. This game is amazing. Can’t wait for Naughty God’s PS4 game reveal.

  • I was curious to see how well Last of Us was selling in Japan. Over the weekend I was working on my multiplayer trophies and I seemed to be meeting a lot of Japanese players (I work swing/late night to keep in time with JST).

  • Tim

My favorite PS3 exclusive & the best imo (till now) is MGS4 & I have never change opinion since I play it & here comes TLOU & make me reevaluate, TLOU took the TOP SPOT in my personal list of the best PS3 exclusives & w/o much effort I must say, brilliant/amazing game, a true MASTERPIECE!

  • Crimson_Cloud

I would love to see some Let’s Plays of Last of Us by a Japanese gamer. Really want to see their reactions. But yeah, I’m glad that the game is doing good. I’m a few hours in and really enjoying it. That intro alone is breathtaking. ^^

    I wish this gaem was set in japan ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • Linhua

      … lol… dat FACE.

  • Siegel Clyne

For a niche game (and an upcoming anime) series, Neptunia/Neptune seems to be steady and doing fine saleswise in Japan.

As one who loves the Uncharted game series – completed the last two on Crushing last year – it’s nice to see Naughty Dog’s latest game, The Last of Us, doing well in Japan.
