These Companies Are Coming To Tokyo Game Show (Yes, Microsoft Is Back)

By Spencer . June 28, 2013 . 6:18pm

image CESA released a list of exhibitors confirmed for Tokyo Game Show and Microsoft will return to the show even though they skipped TGS last year. Of course, Sony Computer Entertainment will be there along with usual third party developers like Capcom, Square Enix, and Konami.

Where’s Nintendo you say? Well, Nintendo doesn’t attend Tokyo Game Show. What about Atlus? Last year they had a little corner in Sega’s booth since Sega helps distribute their games. Rockstar Japan shared a booth with Capcom in the past too, although it’s unknown if they will do so this year. One company missing from the list is Level-5. They had their own event in 2011, but attended Tokyo Game Show with a big Fantasy Life display in 2012.

Tokyo Game Show will take place on September 19 through September 22.

  • Keima88

I am still hoping for a Persona 5 reveal.

    • landlock

Doubt that’ll happen at the moment. Could see it being on the 3DS though when it does.

      • Go2hell66

        Or xbox one

        • Keima88

Ugh. Microsoft buying Atlus… God the horror!!!
Going to start drinking to drown my sorrows if that happens. (I dont drink alcohol, I rather spend my money it on games)

          • MogCakes

            Persona 6
            -Bald space marine protagonist
            -Realistic art style
            -Brown, blue, orange
            -First person shooter
            -Everyone is a dude bro

          • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Microsoft published Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. Did those games suffer from the trends of Western gaming?

          • 3PointDecoupage

BD had no story, and LO had ugly realistic graphics. I’d say so.

          • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

BD was not a good game, but it was a snes-era rpg in a 2007 wrapper.

          • MogCakes

I was being facetious. MS didn’t affect CAVE shmups despite their non-dude-bro-ness. Lighten up a bit mate.

          • No, but they didn’t make the 360 popular in Japan either, so I doubt Microsoft will be doing anything similar this gen.

          • Lordshade

They’ll call it Call of Lucifer: Mara Warfare

          • Nightmare637

I’d play it because of the name alone.

          • That sounds like hell came up from cracks in the earth. o_O

          • artemisthemp

            Persona 5 is now a FPS :P

        • landlock

That would be funny, I could see all the butthurt now. Won’t happen of course but still.

          • Go2hell66

            you never know…

          • landlock

I’d actually really wouldn’t mind a Lost Odyssey 2 or something similar. Mistwalker needs some more work aswell.

          • almostautumn

Mistwalker has nothing to do with Atlus though

          • landlock

Yeah I posted it in the wrong place, having conversations at the sametime in the same thread.

        • ZEROthefirst

I think companies in Japan more or less want to succeed, not be put far behind in the game because of shoddy sales of poor advertising on Microsoft’s part.

          • almostautumn

Hey man, no reason to defend Japanese culture in this. I mean, I think the 360 is extremely non-superior to the PS3, but at the same time— I mean, if you look at any western-based product entering the Japanese market, it fails. I mean, it’s hard to fathom, but the truth is there is a pretty rooted racism there, at least in commercial identity.

          • Kevadu

Stop spreading this nonsense. Plenty of western products have succeeded in Japan. Just look at Apple.

          • ZEROthefirst

Not defending Japanese culture, I’m just saying that Microsoft doesn’t put much effort into advertising in Japan, and that most games for the 360 are aimed towards a Western audience. It’s not a racism thing, it’s preference, and not every country or person is aimed towards FPS’.

          • Moofarbubu

OMG RACISM LOL!!! That’s just ignorant. You know nothing about the Japanese, so just shut up.

      • Mozendo

Why do people still think Persona will come to a Nintendo console?

        • TheExile285

I guess because of SMT4 being on 3DS. I would personally like Persona to stay on PS.

          • AlexanderPappas

The way I see it is that Nintendo has been getting all the SMT games recently, and the persona games have been mainly reserved for Sony (with the exception of P4A). Nintendo is also getting SMT x FE which doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Persona. So if my theory is correct SMT is now going to be on Nintendo consoles while persona will probably be for Sony (maybe Xbone).

          • Mozendo

Exactly how I see it as well.

        • landlock

3DS or Vita. Hard choice right?
          Though both is possible.

          • Mozendo

            Not really.
If Persona would come to a Nintendo console it would on been on one by now.

          • landlock

            Exactly that’s why the 3DS.

          • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Persona has never been on 3DS. Chances are it will be on consoles.

          • landlock

            Times change.

          • Mozendo

Ah, I typoed. I meant Nintendo console.

        • Atlus did announce, way back at the 3DS’ unveiling, that there would be at least one Persona title coming to the 3DS, though that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be Persona 5.

          • Mozendo

It was just a rumor. There was no official word from Atlus. They already revealed 5 (edit: 6) 3DS games. If Atlus was working on a Persona game there would be news by now.

          • It… actually was not just a rumor at all, it was an entry on official release lists. Atlus promised an Etrian Odyssey game, a Devil Survivor game, a mainline SMT game, and a Persona game for 3DS. So far they’ve released all but one of those.

          • Mozendo

Atlus didn’t make an announcement about it hence making it a rumor.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

Geez guys if you want to provide info about something you will probably need to at least cite the article.
            @mozendo:disqus he’s talking about this:

          • Mozendo

I don’t see Soul Hackers on the list. For all we know that could be the “persona” title we were supposed to get.

          • Yes, that game could be a completely different game, easy mistake to make.

          • I didn’t think this guy would be so dense that I would need to present hard evidence to him that I wasn’t making this up.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

I know it’s happened to me too (on a Tales of Symphonia article). Hopefully that Persona game is still coming!

          • Yeah, there are a few other intriguing titles on that list that haven’t materialized yet, like the unspecified Ninja Gaiden, Final Fantasy and Contra titles. I know some games were cancelled after the 3DS got off to a slow start (like the Assassin’s Creed and Saints Row games) but hopefully these ones didn’t slip through the cracks.

          • ATLUS ANNOUNCED THE RELEASE LIST, you moron.

          • Cyberjin

            link to that list?

          • See MrSirFeatherFang’s post above.

          • Cyberjin

yeah? but where is the source?
so please link me to that Atlus announcement :)

          • Do you understand what an “official” release list is?

          • Cyberjin

            I do :)
but there is nothing official about it from that link.
the list do mention 3 “Shin Megami Tensei” games

and 3DS has 3 “Shin Megami Tensei” games today
            – however non of them are a Persona game.

            beside you said
so where is Atlus official announcement of it?
            i’m still waiting :)

          • Are you seriously questioning whether the list is official? As opposed to, what, just totally made up? This was the official list, as released by Nintendo, at E3 2010. Every game on there was being officially announced by its publisher. If they weren’t announcing it, it wouldn’t be on the list. Hence, this is Atlus’s official announcement of a 3DS Persona game. Do you think Nintendo would just lie about its third-party support? If you’re so skeptical about the list’s authenticity, why don’t you ask Ishaan where he got it from?

Also, the list does not say that Atlus had planned to merely release “3 Shin Megami Tensei games”. It specifies at least one game each in the Etrian Odyssey, SMT mainline, SMT Persona, and SMT Devil Survivor series. Atlus has so far made good on all of these except the Persona game. You could argue that the planned Persona game was secretly changed to Soul Hackers, but there is literally zero evidence to support that claim, and zero evidence to suggest that it’s been cancelled other than the fact that there simply hasn’t been any more information released about it. It may not even be in development yet, but until further notice there is no reason to believe that it is not still being planned by Atlus.

Now I’m sure you think you’re being very clever with your arbitrary skepticism and smarmy emoticons, but really though – that’s some serious fanboy denial you’ve got going there, bruh. What do you stand to lose from a Persona game being released on a Nintendo console?

          • Cyberjin

I just want the facts because you said
I wanted to see it official from Atlus.
but you keep dodging me :P

          • I’m not dodging anything. I literally just explained this to you, but apparently you are too stupid and/or illiterate to understand. Try reading my post again. :P :) :O :( :X

          • Cyberjin

show me! I need real proof!

            you dodge me again
            show me

          • What do you need proof of? That this release list was official? Because if it was official (and it was) then that is Atlus’s official announcement. You know. Like I JUST told you.

          • Cyberjin

            dodge again
because I need facts to believe its not rumor
            and you said
then show me the official facts please

          • And like I JUST TOLD YOU, if you want proof that the release list is official, why don’t you ask Ishaan where he got it from? That’s the best I can offer you, because as far as I can tell the file is no longer hosted directly on Nintendo’s website, even though at one time it was.

Oh, who am I kidding, if Ishaan tells you he got it from Nintendo’s website you’ll probably insinuate he’s a liar or some bullshit. You are impossible to communicate with. (And on that note: please learn basic rules of grammar – punctuation, capitalization, etc. – if you want to be taken even remotely seriously in a debate.)

          • Cyberjin

because it was you that said
how can I believe this story?
and the official facts suddenly disappeared?

            Okay whatever man :P

          • I give up. I have now clarified that statement multiple times and told you, repeatedly, how you can get confirmation as to its authenticity. You refuse to listen, because you don’t want to believe that it’s true, because you are an emotionally stunted man-child who will feel personally wounded if the video game you like comes to somebody else’s game machine. I’ve done all I can. Have a nice life!

        • With the way things are looking now, there’s still a ghost of a chance that Nintendo might buy Atlus.

      • $36598391

Nah, maybe PS4 since all of the Persona games were on Sony consoles

      • Z3

Could you please elaborate? You sound like you just pulled it out of your ass

      • mike dickson

nah vita is more of a better chose

    • pantsonadog

Can Atlus still make games after their parent company is filing for bankruptcy?

      • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Well, they are basically up for sale, so assuming whoever buys them is willing to allow that to continue, I would assume so.

      • OldmanJables

Several media outlets have reported that Atlus is still operation unhindered by INDEX’s monetary failures. Not sure if they are or will be up for sale though.

      • Keima88

Isnt it confirmed a while ago that their are working at it? I remember reading it somewhere here on the site.

      • Lordshade

Index is looking for a sponsor for it’s games division (aka Atlus) so they can continue working during this process and be sold if things go south.

        • landlock

Hopefully someone decent like Tecmo Koei. They already brought Gust and release nearly everything worldwide can’t think of many better.

          • dotzeno

Never thought I would see the words ‘decent’ and ‘Koei’ together in the same sentence.

Just really sick of ‘Dynasty Warriors’-esque games.

          • Scrooge_McDuck

Those games aren’t the only type of games they make, you know.

          • dotzeno

You’re probably right. I know very little about Koei. What I do know is from all the time my neighbor used to play Sangoku Musou since as early as I can remember playing video games on a console. Combined with what a let down Gundam Musou (and 2) was for me, there is very little I can say about Koei that would imply any positivity.

        • Space_Ghost

I wouldn’t be sad if Nintendo stepped up and bought them, and I play Sony consoles as well. Nintendo needs more JRPG’s, since Square-Enix doesn’t put the mainline FF games on Nintendo’s systems anymore.

Edit: Sure, it’d suck for Sony fanboys, but everyone needs to expand their horizons. The console wars are stupid. I say buy all the consoles if your budget allows!

  • Göran Isacson

Sweden Pavilion? Now there’s something that catches my eye- anyone who knows what that’s all about? Also, anyone who thinks Nintendo is at the very least going to do some Nintendo Direct around the time of this event?

  • ChiffonCake

    Persona 5! Persona 5!

Also, Microsoft? What are they going to do, show the Xbone? :E

    • Fidelis

      MS:What’s up, Japan? Microsoft here!

      Jp1: Microwhat?

      MS:You know..the Xbox 360?

      JP: Xwho?
JP2: I think it’s some shitty indie game

  • Magnumsally

Atlus not being there is worrying we likely wont see a single game

Nintendo not being there is normal. Level 5 has its own events.

    • Solomon_Kano

As the article notes, last year Atlus had a presence in Sega’s booth since Sega helps distribute their games. That’ll probably be the case again.

Then again, they aren’t averse to throwing out major announcements without TGS. They did announce SMT IV in Famitsu, after all.

  • Suriel Cruz

    NO ATLUS???!!! D:

    • Solomon_Kano

“What about Atlus? Last year they had a little corner in Sega’s booth since Sega helps distribute their games.”

      • I never pay attention to users names. Did you always had that MOD thing?

        • M’iau M’iaut

He joined the Silconera Swat Squad today.

        • Solomon_Kano

Not always. As M’iau said, I’m a new addition.

          • Unlimax

            Gratz Solomon :]

          • Solomon_Kano

          • Fidelis

            You deserve it, dude

          • Solomon_Kano

Thanks. It’s really nice seeing so many people give me a warm response, so I hope I don’t let you guys down.

      • Suriel Cruz

        “Thanks… I didn’t know that.”

  • Go2hell66

Lol everyone is gonna cry when microsoft reveal their xbox one exclusive jrpgs

    • Landale

      Somehow, I really doubt that.

      • landlock

XB360 had a good supply of JRPGs at the beginning so you never know.

        • Landale

I don’t recall many, and the ones I do recall were not really something to cry about.

          • landlock

Tales Of Vesperia and Lost Odyssey of course was excellent. Infinite Undiscovery was good. Blue Dragon, Spectral Force 3 were OK. The Last Remnant, Operation Darkness not so much. Of course Eternal Sonata also came out much earlier on the 360.

          • Warboss Aohd

The Last Remnant was great…………fer PC.

          • Landale

In order: Not exclusive, and a couple years in. Don’t know much about it, but a couple years in. Don’t know much about it, but a couple years in. Don’t know much about it, a year in close enough. OK, but definitely not something one would cry about and a couple years in. Not exclusive, and a couple years in. Crap indeed so not one one would cry about and a couple years in. Decent, and in the first year, but it didn’t stay exclusive.

          • landlock

No idea what you said but it sounded like a whine and an excuse.

          • Landale

This was about exclusive JRPGs that someone would cry over being exclusive to the Xbox One, and you added in “at the beginning” to that. So, I pointed out what was not exclusive, whether or not I knew whether it’d be worth crying about, and the timing, if you consider 2+ years in the beginning fine.
Edit: Also, rather than making an additional post about this; I noticed your use of the phrase butthurt down below. Might not want to do that. From what I noticed, that kinda seems to be a bit of a berserk button phrase for one of the mods. Just an FYI.

          • dotzeno

I didn’t realize how little I care about those titles.

Must be because I don’t feel the need to peek over the fence to find out about games that I don’t want to play that I can’t play because I don’t own a console that I don’t want.

          • GH56734

And then there’s Tengai Makyou Ziria, an exclusive for the Xbox 360 that KILLED the once-in-the-top-ten RPG series because poor sales prevented them from even porting it to PS3 even four years after, to cut the losses. Oh, and its localization (decided from back in 2003 since the GBA title) was nixed too because of that.
Namco pulling EO PS3 and ToV PS3 was for a reason, you know.

          • dotzeno

Wait, so you’re telling me, a game that sold poorly on the Xbox wasn’t ported to the PS3 in Japan because it sold poorly on the Xbox? And because it sold so poorly in Japan on the Xbox, they decided not to localize it because it didn’t do so well in the east?

            I’m sure you’re making a valid point, I just don’t get it.

And what’s EO PS3? I keep thinking Etrian Odyssey.

          • landlock

If you don’t look at the games how do you know weather you want the console or not?

          • dotzeno

To be perfectly honest, I can’t say I wasn’t acting out of brand loyalty. But I also can’t say that I did not consider the technical specs (I also can’t say the first two points aren’t related). Both of those combined with my personal situation, at that point in time, assisted me in making a decision – immigrating to another country that uses a different region code (NTSCJ -> PAL) and going to a boarding school that has limited internet capabilities (went from unlimited to 20mb a week).

I suppose FF Versus XIII also helped.

    • Kevadu

I think first they need to worry about having an actual release date for the Xbox One in Japan. ‘Cause you know, they don’t actually have that yet…

    • MogCakes

‘when’? How about ‘if’. For that matter, JRPGs didn’t sell the 360 in Japan, and they won’t sell the 180 in Japan either. To get the JP market on board, MS would need to literally steal every JRPG from being multiplat or PS4 exclusive, as well as take mindshare away from the 3DS and other handhelds. Good luck with that, Microsoft.

  • redhood56

There goes all of my hopes for a zero escape 3 announcement :(.

  • Spirit Macardi

As always, I’m hoping that Namco will finally reveal a third entry in a certain Hideo Yoshizawa directed series.

As always, I’m no doubt going to be disappointed again…

  • TrannyMagic

awheeeeeeee! hopefully this means some jrpgs will be revealed on xbox one or at least something that doesn’t involve shooting… I’m a fighting gamer at heart and must play with Orchid once more but besides that not really hyped about anything else….. here’s hoping for good news.

  • Learii

    why MS on japan -_-

    • Solomon_Kano

Why not? They’ve got a game from Swery, Crimson Dragon, and an unannounced project from their new Osaka studio, so this would be the best place to show that.

  • Solomon_Kano

GungHo’s presence is interesting. Mind 0, Killer is Dead, and Ragnarok Odyssey Ace all hit in August with Puzzle & Dragons Z being their only other confirmed release for the year. So they’ll definitely have something new to show, but it’s a question of who it’ll be from.

Suda’s in the early stages on another game; Acquire may have something, though I dunno if they’ve got the staff to have another project going since they’re co-developing Mind 0 and Rain; Game Arts isn’t very big, so they’re probably completely occupied by Ace (as the.PS3 version still doesn’t have a release date).

So… Grasshopper’s really the only one capable of showing something, unless they’ve got more co-developed projects or they announce something that’s in its preliminary stages.

  • MrGreeny

I thought the Xbox One wasn’t being released in Japan, so what’s the point of Microsoft being there?

    • ZEROthefirst

It is, but seeing how well Microsoft has done overall in Japan with their consoles they honestly might as well just leave the Japanese market. I mean the biggest selling point of the 360 in Japan was Monster Hunter Frontier and for a short time Tales of Vesperia (before Vesperia got it’s sort of expansion on the PS3).

      • The 360 seems to have settled into a weird but comfortable little niche in Japan, where its library mainly consists (apart from Western games) of shmups, visual novels, and other sorts of games aimed at the hardest of hardcore otaku. That doesn’t seem like the most lucrative market, but they’re at least keeping the system alive.

Incidentally, does anyone have any numbers on how the 360 has performed in Japan relative to the Gamecube?

        • ZEROthefirst

Here’s a list of total console sales for every console so far. Not the best list, but it’s the best I could find in a few minutes. Anyways Gamecube’s sales clocked at 4.04 mil by the end of the fiscal year 2008 in Japan and the 360 is at around 1.64 mil as of this year in Japan.

    • Solomon_Kano

It’s just not making it to Japan (and pretty much the rest of Asia) at launch. They have a few Japanese games and a new Japanese studio that they probably want to start pimping in advance of launch though.

I don’t care if they release a Final Fantasy 7 remake. I will not buy anything from a Microsoft branded Japanese studio.

Like an absolute delusional moron, I am super hoping for an E.X. Troopers 2 XD

Really though; I absolutely vote E.X. Troopers as my fave. game of 2012, and yes, yes, yes I played all the Blockbusters. I friggin’ loved that game and genuinely cannot fathom why it failed. I know Capcom is at that point financially where they won’t be taking risks—- but boy oh boy did I love E.X. Troopers!

Not sure how I would feel about a sequel to this game. Other than that, completely agree with you. EX Troopers is an amazing game. It’s too bad there are so many people that are unwilling to play games that aren’t in their native language.

      • Moofarbubu

How do you do that? Can you play it without speaking Japanese? (and no at the moment I’m too busy to learn it. It’s on my bucket list though)

        • dotzeno

Not entirely sure actually. I feel like I watch enough Japanese media that I can figure most of it out. Especially since I used to have lots of difficulty playing Jap games as a kid – most of them were text based/heavy.

EX troopers is also mostly visual and vocal – much less text than your average Japanese game.

plus, the music really pumps me up to play more/longer.

Awww I want to know what’s on the news on Inazuma Eleven Go Galaxy, also I want a SSB4 character reveal on TGS, also since ArcSys is here any updates on Blazblue Chronophantasma Console Version? and I wonder what will Capcom do on it’s anniversary…

  • ZekeFreek

No NIS or Atlus? Meh, don’t care then.

    • Fidelis

…I quickly glanced over the list, and I just assumed they were on it..
My excitement just took a hit, though I’m PUMPED for Arc system works. Guilty Gear Xrd footage/ news will MORE than make up for lack of NIS, imo.
And honestly, I don’t think anything NIS could do would excite me more than Disgaea D2. Persona 5 or SMT X FE news would be very welcome, though.

  • TheExile285

Sony better annouce Gravity Rush 2 for Vita!

I’d also like to see some Freedom Wars, KH3, FF15 and Neptunia Rebirth.

  • $36598391

I hope Atlus will announce a remake of the original Shin Megami Tensei
It would go good on the 3DS since the bottom screen could be used for a map

I am interested in what Nihon Falcom is going to unveil at the TGS

  • Gilgamesh2025

The TGS is gonna be awesome this year! :D

  • Fidelis

TGS is always more exciting than E3…

Actually TGS is to E3 what siliconera is to a mainstream gaming news site.

  • artemisthemp

Funny to see Microsoft ad a TGS considering their console don’t really sell in Japan.

Could anyone tell, who Prototype is? never heard of them.

  • Hopefully we see some interesting handheld titles revealed. This is an area in which E3 was a bit lacking.

  • Arcana Wiz

You know what I want? VITA titles pleeease, E3 pretty much confirmed that to west the Vita is a ps4 accessory, so at least let me have my jrpgs.

Oh and Microsoft wonder if they will use the timed exclusives tactics again.

  • Edzo04

persona 5 wont be on 3ds. im thinking ps3 and vita

  • HerosLight

J-Stars victory VS gameplay footage pleeease.

That game has been lacking videos since the commercial video.

Also, more FF15! Maybe more info on KH3?

  • EX+

Let’s see… I wanna see J-Stars Victory VS onscreen gameplay, an onscreen gameplay demo of Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 onscreen gameplay reveal, showing Sora’s new outfit and the new mechanics in the combat system. Maybe this is where CC2 will detail their next gen Naruto game. I hope it’s exclusive to PS4 but if not oh well.

  • Moofarbubu

I’m excited for Square Enix and Sony, but where’s Nintendo!!! I want to see some Monolith Soft’s “X” game, whatever its’ called.

Why is Microsoft there, that just pisses me off. I’m a hater, yes. I don’t buy any Microsoft products by principle. They are the spawn of evil in the tech and gaming world.

    • Solomon_Kano

      Nintendo doesn’t do TGS.
