Gust’s Vita RPG, Chronos Materia, Reveals Its Setting And Characters

By Sato . July 2, 2013 . 1:20pm

Gust’s upcoming RPG, Chronos Materia, for the PlayStation Vita will be about the adventures of girls who have been thrown into a world where human civilization no longer exists. In addition, the game will have time-traveling features, similar to those of Radiant Historia. Here’s a look at Chronos Materia’s story and character info.

Here’s a brief summary of the game’s story and setting:

It was a world without a single person. A world covered in grand nature, without a single trace of mankind or civilization. That was the kind of world that the young girls have suddenly been thrown into.

Where is this place? What is their purpose of being in such a world? What must they do? How will they return to the world they’ve come from? These are the questions in their minds, as they stand in the middle of the unknown world.

The fate of the young girls will depend on the “time” that unfolds.

What follows is a look at some of the characters who will be participating in the time traveling adventures in this mysterious world.

Iris is a quiet and kind-hearted  young girl. She’s an older sister-type character, but she seems to lack self-confidence at the same time. Iris has made it her goal to become a great alchemist in order to be useful to the people around her.

Time is an adventurous young man, and is the type who acts before thinking. He shows leadership during expeditions and battles, but his nature occasionally leads to rash decisions. Time loves to move around and doesn’t like staying put. He may come across as a rowdy, but he also has a romantic side to him.

She’s a strong-minded character with a cool personality and a strong sense of duty. However, she also has a side of her that is a bit of a scaredy cat, and can get lonely at times. In addition, she can also be stubborn, making it difficult for her to cope with certain situations.

Sion is known for being a soft character, but also an indecisive one. Regardless of his indecisive nature, however, Sion’s analytical ability is second to none, and he makes good use of it along with his calm nature. On the other hand, he has difficulty showing people his true intentions, so he tends to stick to his rather flippant personality.

Chronos Materia is slated for release on September 26th for PlayStation Vita.

“Iris has made it her goal to become a great alchemist in order to be useful to the people around her.”

It’s either a spin-off to Atelier or Gust really lack imagination.

    • Highasthesky

One of the characters name is “time” i rest my case.

      • MrSirFeatherFang

You think it’s suppose to be pronounced “tee-meh”?

        • Unless the characters are written to be speaking Scandinavian languages (or whichever other languages that follow similar vowel pronunciations), no way.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

I see. I was just guessing due to my manga reading experiences… I thought the common dog name (Mike) was pronounced like the nickname given to people with the name Michael.
edit: whoops I forgot to add, now I think that Mike (in Japan) is pronounced “Mee-kay” or am I wrong?

          • Roughly “Mee-keh”, I guess.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

damn it, I know what you meant, I just wrote out the phonics the wrong way. ARRRRGGH

          • piichan

hmm, if they were to pronunce Mike, i think they would be saying it as Mai-ku. then time as tai-mu. that’s how they usually sound out stuff that doesn’t end with their vowels a-i-u-e-o.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

I’m not talking about the actual English word “Mike” though. I was thinking that as a translation error, the name “Time” isn’t actually the English word “time” but actually just something that looks like our English word time. Now that you pointed this out… I feel like Drakos has misunderstood me. I do know if they said the English words “Mike” and “Time” it would be like “mai-ku” and “tai-mu” but I was trying to say that even though it looks like our English, what if it wasn’t romanized properly for this article? My history teacher pronounced Nobunnaga as No-Bung-gah. Funny, but I knew it was incorrect… well thanks for the help anyways…

          • Radiosity

Too much stress on the syllables but overall you’ve got the right idea. Say the Mi and Ke separately as two syllables instead of how you’d say them in English.

Time’s name though is written in katakana as タイム, so it’d be pronounced ‘taimu’, not ti-me as you guessed there (that would be written ティメ).

Interestingly the official site has an image of a clock… ticking BACKWARDS :D

          • MrSirFeatherFang

            yeah that’s what I meant sorry :(
I’m not used to writing out these kind of phonic like structures they have in the dictionaries.
Man, I feel like I’m just a magnet of misunderstandings… worst than your average shounen ecchi main protagonist…
            Thanks for the help!

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Its just Gust’s theme. Alchemy. Nothing really wrong with that.
Although I hope there is more to the story over time.

      • landlock

It’s the fact she is called Iris as well as in Atelier Iris. I didn’t really mean it in a negitive way.

  • Micrll

Not so sure on how I like the Chibi / Super Deformed art style taking up a lot of space on the screen but it will grow on me I think.
Hoping for a English release. The Vita needs more original content that caters to it’s strengths, colorful RPG’s are prefect for that OLED screen :)

  • DesmaX

… It really reminds me of the LoH: Gagharv trilogy on the PSP

  • Great. Just what we need… a guy who’s indecisive by nature and has analytical abilities that are second to none?

Anyways Gust is becoming one of my favourite developers so I look forward to this. :D

  • puchinri

    ohgoodnessit’ssocute. I can’t handle it. I guess I gotta get a Vita for sure now. ;u;

Also, I like the character descriptions so far. Very Gust, and with enough basic traits and quirks to have plenty of potential and appeal. (Sion’s is the most surprising, and I look forward to Primla the most.)

They say girls though, so I wonder if Iris and Primla are the only two not native to this world, or what’s going on?

  • Göran Isacson

I do find the concept of people travelling to a world completely devoid of human civilization and returned to plantlife a compelling idea. Just wonder why they say “girls” are returned, and then show that two of the characters are male… as well as what kind of RPG this will be. Who are our enemies? If there are enemies, how do we figh them? Or do we just explore this vast, untouched wilderness?

    • TheExile285

They have weapons so they must be fighting something lol

Based on the scan I saw, the game either has a first person battle system or traditional turned based. I personally hope its the later.

    • puchinri

That’s what I was wondering. Did the two guys not come along with the girls maybe, or Primla might not have even come along with Iris in the first place and they’re referencing another girl entirely? Really odd.

    • Kai2591

Yeah I’ve been wondering about that too (“girls”?)

Perhaps the guys are reverse-traps? lol~

or maybe the dudes aren’t human and did not come with the girls. or maybe they came from their own worlds.

      • Göran Isacson

Some possibilities there, true… or maybe they just wrote something wrong XD. You never know!

        • Kai2591

          haha yeah.
them Japs can be so vague sometimes…

  • Sion has great analytical abilities, but he’s also flippant… and calm on top of that? That’s… rather confusing.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Aren’t all real peoples confusing? :D

      • But this is a fictional character. Granted, I’m basing my understanding from a translation of a short flavor text about a character, so how Gust would write his character remains to be seen. Although I’ll say that I currently find it odd for Sion’s description to be pretty standard/archetypal yet still confusing; a bit contradictory, even.

        • MrSirFeatherFang

Isn’t it cool to see a fictional character to be contradictory and confusing? Better than a lot of one-dimensional characters we see in manga/anime and video games. Of course we don’t know much about this character like you said and it’s only a short flavor of text…

          • BlueTree

Showing would be better than telling, in this case. I tend to ignore a lot of these character write ups for that reason, the expectations that are set up are often pretty damning to the point of self-parody. It’s like seeing that character who “never studies” but is a genius/gets straight As. It’s like “Um, yeah, no” for some people, such as this instance.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

true, I shouldn’t be expecting too much from just this write up. The way that anime/manga and video games are nowadays…

    • Split personality? Or some kind of odd Jeykll/Hyde thing?

    • puchinri

Makes me think of Sherlock Holmes. The Benedict version specifically. Calm, certainly and someone who can analyze very well. But he is a flippant individual (and mostly because he lacks social skills, which revolve around other sets of issues and such).

      I feel like his indecision is a good lead to the intentions part and is what brings him to being flippant, though it will be hard to say as of now whether this will be handled well, or a cluttered mess of traits. x’D;

  • Aldorr

Kami-sama, please do make western release happen

  • Jesse

I saw another translation for “Time”, where it’s “Thyme”, though I don’t know which is the more correct one.

  • Sergio Macellaro

    Western release, pretty pleaseeeeee!?!??

  • BlueTree

I imagine I’m having the same reaction people may have had to “C(h)rono” being the name of the protagonist of Chrono Trigger.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    September 26th pls hurry

  • TheExile285

I was hoping for a 3D world but 2D is fine too (especially since the colors will look amazing on Vita’s screen.

    Come on NISA/Arkys USA/Atlus USA!

    • pimpalicious

Tecmo-Koei would be the first ones to ask.

      • TheExile285

Why do I keep forgetting they own Gust now? Lol

  • Dudes name is time? seriously?
Game looks adorable, the idea behind it reminds me a little of terranigma though I doubt it’ll be as deep still sounds interestin though

  • ChiffonCake

Wow, this looks adorable! Especially the art. I’ll have to find out who’s the artist later.

  • Warboss Aohd

“Iris is a quiet and kind-hearted young girl. She’s an older sister-type character”
    ‘headdesks repeatedly’

i would be hittin’ my head harder if it said younger sister though ta be honest.

    • piichan

japan and their loli stereotypes :p they’re only differentiated by their personalities and not their physique.

      • Warboss Aohd

personalities dat can easily be defined my tropez.

  • Alexander Aubert

i’m hoping the graphic will be like atelier graphic, but this is fine

  • LM009

and a step backwards for gust, from 3D models to 2D and chibi no less(chibi’s cute on nendos and all but on a videogame no just no), i am disappointed

  • Sounds interesting. That Time name threw me off. I would have seen that more for the boss or some overseer type. Maybe playing it will make it sink in. Unless it has a some deeper meaning! Like you find out he has a huger part to play and his name is a hint of it!

  • Nitraion

That chibi-like sort remind me of Harvest moon games… PSone days…
although this is better on Vita screen

  • Arcana Wiz

i am the only one who noticed a calendar like thing at the top left of the screens? wonder if it will use time management mechanics.

    • puchinri

Definitely not. I just figured that given the title and the information above, the time management aspect was a given (and thus a calendar isn’t a surprise).

      • Arcana Wiz

Yeah i read about the time travel but in the calendar has day and month so i guess it have some time restriction like the atelier titles.

  • anarchy_panty

Gust’s titles tend to be more mechanically interesting than their contemporaries, so I’ll definitely pick it up if it ends up getting localized.

  • LightGenx

Ugh, character designs look so bland. I’m hoping their personalities make up for it..

  • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Man Gust sure has an annoying obsession with making “Timed” RPG’s… Is it too much to ask for a game that doesn’t have time fighting me so that I can actually explore for once, or grind, or just do whatever the eff I want? Like I don’t know, Atelier Iris was?

    • Nyandroid

Time-traveling features. Not time limits. =owo=~

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

While the numbers in the top right corner look like days, and have the Kanji for it, I could be wrong. I suppose the second Kanji which I don’t know, could change the meaning.

    • ShadowDivz

Time is the one enemy man can never beat.
That is why we challenge him.

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Your infinite wisdom is greatly appreciated…

        • Mark

  • Nyandroid

I love Radiant Historia! And this game looks absolutely adorable! I hope it comes over here in Canada! =^w^=~

  • Renaldi Saputra

seems I’ll have many list of game for my Vita

  • Lester Paredes

    His name is Time? Seriously?

    • DyLaN

Not the 1st one. Time and Eternity Toki is Japanese for Time.

      • Lester Paredes

There is a male character with the name of Time listed. And it’s still stupid. It’d be like my parent’s naming me Space or Infinity or Mobius.

  • badmoogle

Looks like a beautiful game and Radiant Historia was great.I just added it to my Vita wishlist (although i still don’t have a Vita :p)

  • isotrex

Wow! That’s one freakin’ huge chibi character on a screen. I wonder what’s the gameplay looks like.

  • XiaomuArisu

Iris….A Alchemist wanting to become the very best…
Am I smelling a Atelier reference here?

  • Aristides

I’m in <3 Go for it TK, I want to give you my money!

  • artemisthemp

So will Tecmo Koei bring this to the West?

  • Pichi

Love the in-game art. Might bite depending on how TK treats it.

  • Gustavo
