Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem Is At Least Partly Set In Modern Times

By Ishaan . July 9, 2013 . 5:00pm

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, the upcoming crossover RPG by Nintendo and Atlus, will take place in the modern world, a producer at Nintendo has revealed.

Speaking with the Hobby Consolas magazine, Hitoshi Yamagami (Xenoblade, Pandora’s Tower, Fire Emblem: Awakening) shared, “For a long time, I’ve wanted to create a Fire Emblem in our times, in the real world. Imagine a Pegasus that comes from the sky and lands on Building 109 of Shibuya, Tokyo. I always thought that would be incredible.”

“At the same time, I know it’s hard because of how Fire Emblem is. I visited many companies to express these ideas. When I went to Atlus, I was told that Shin Megami Tensei together with Fire Emblem is what I wanted. So, I soon said that to Intelligent Systems and started this very special collaboration.”

Yamagami added, “Oops! I shouldn’t say that the game takes place in the real world. We haven’t announced it, right?”

The idea of a Fire Emblem game in modern times doesn’t sound as outrageous as one might think. In fact, Intelligent Systems, the series’ developer, considered the idea of a modern-day or even sci-fi setting during the development of Fire Emblem: Awakening. That said, it wouldn’t be surprising at all for Fire Emblem’s traditional medieval setting to play a role in the game as well.

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem has no release date. In fact, we know nothing about it, other than that it’s an RPG and now that the modern-day world is probably involved.

    Nocturne for life.

  • Sergio Briceño

Never actually considered the possibility. But since it’s a collaboration with SMT I think the modern setting makes more sense.

  • RoxasTheUnknown1

Most likely it’ll be some mishmash world bringing a little of everything but being predominantly modern.

  • Nanashrew

I like to imagine that the FE cast will be like this when they visit the modern day real world

  • andref

got to wonder if the FE crew would be new people or different characters from different universes.

    • RisukuAozora

I’d assume different characters from different universes, sorta how most of the mainline SMT titles are different characters from different universes. Now which characters, that’s something I’d love to know.

  • キロ

I would hope they just make an Advance Wars game if considering a “modern” Fire Emblem!

  • Ladius

I’m not so warmed to this concept, honestly. Fire Emblem is so rooted in heroic fantasy themes, with war, politics, personal relationships and magic as its narrative cornerstones that setting it in modern times and hybridating it with such a wildly different series as SMT seems a bit of a stretch.

I would be more optimistic if this was a non-crossover, modern time FE with no ties to other franchises (basically, something like Advance Wars Days of Ruin with FE gameplay). Of course we know so little it’s impossible to make any kind of judgement, so I will stay optimistic and open minded in the meantime.

    • Urban Fantasy isn’t that big compared to High Fantasy, but it has a lot of potential. I can imagine Pegasus Knights and Grandmasters ducking it out with YHWH and Lucifer in Tokyo… kinda, it would be cool to see a mixture of High Fantasy and Urban Fantasy, though.

      • Ladius

Urban fantasy could be a great idea for a stand alone game with its own coherent setting, but mixing a series about wars and politics in heroic fantasy worlds and another based upon demon summoning and ethical conflicts in contemporary or near-future Japan isn’t really the same thing. Then again, as I said we know too little to make any judgement.

    • Sardorim

I have a feeling they may just abuse FE:A’s Multi-Verse and have one set of characters from an alternate FE:A Universe to be pulled to the future by some demon or something.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        FE has 3 universes right?

        • Sardorim

FE:A has 4 Universes detailed in its game.

          Morgan Timeline
          Future’s Past Timeline

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

…… Oh gooooooooodddddd, I was talking about the series as a whole

          • celery

There’s the Akaneia games, 1 2 3 11 12 and 13. Then Jugdral, 4 & 5. Elibe is 6 & 7. 8 is by itself, lol. 9 & 10 are Tellius. Unless my memory fails me, there’s nothing to hint that these are connected (except Priam in Awakening, hinting that Akaneia MAY be connected to Tellius somehow).

          • Elizabeth ‘Ely’ Moreno

Well, if you want to take the dialogue from the DLC chapters for true, all the games are in the same universe, or at least the characters knows about the stories. And now for the continental thing, we have just seen two continents in Awakening, and both of them are almost-completely seen in one half of a terrestrial globe, so you could say the continents of the other games are in the other half.

    • Well, it’d be hard to make a crossover without the essences of each universe making a degree of compromise.

  • Just imagine “Geneology” in modern times. Better yet, don’t.

  • RisukuAozora

WMG: Whatever is used to get the SMT IV heroes from E. Mikado to Modern Tokyo will be used here and will play a major role in the plot.

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

I was thinking the Outrealm gate, but I don’t know what they used yet in SMT IV, so I can’t judge it.

      • RisukuAozora

Hm, or it could somehow be both? Like somehow they’re connected or something? Now that’d be interesting.

  • AnimusVox

Am I the only one who kinda thinks this is an odd mash up? At least with JUST these two series? I was surprised no FE characters were in ‘Project X Zone’.

    • RisukuAozora

Project X Zone: Namco x Capcom x Sega.
Fire Emblem is Nintendo property, I’d be more surprised if they did show up actually.

      • AnimusVox

Yeah but it’s on a Nintendo console, that’s why I was a bit surprised by such.

        • British_Otaku

Namco X Capcom was on the PS2 and only used characters from those two companies iirc. >_>

I don’t see why a crossover which has already agreed rights between two or more companies on top of getting the license to develop a game will be obligated or necessarily want to call Nintendo or Sony.

Soulcalibur 2 in a sense, did what you ask, but only for Nintendo’s version (featuring Link) while the others got exclusive characters from Namco’s inventory and from a 90s comic.

    • Suicunesol

Of course it’s an odd mash-up. We all know it. It’s also why we’re interested in seeing how Atlas and IS are going to (or not going to) make it work.

      • AnimusVox

Yeah I’m interested too, didnt mean to come of as me hating the ideas, I am lookin forward to how it plays.

I honestly don’t know why I got down voted so bad, did I say something wrong?

        • RisukuAozora

Not necessarily wrong, just sort of… uneducated. No offense. Crossovers happen because two companies agree to it. Nintendo nor Sony would stick any 1st/2nd party in a game without permission.

          • Kelohmello

What exactly is uneducated about what he said? He had an opinion and he said it. Uneducated is the kind of word that you use to call someone ignorant and I hardly think he’s deserving of that word.

          • RisukuAozora

Maybe uneducated wasn’t the word i was looking for, and was far too rude of one to boot. For that, I apologize to AnimusVox.

Especially, since I think it was more of a leap in logic, now that i think about it more. And we all do that at times.

But seriously, just because something is on a Nintendo console, and is a crossover, does not mean Nintendo 1st party characters will appear, as awesome as that would be.

          • AnimusVox

            It’s cool :>
And I didn’t mean for it to sound like I thought it was an obligation for Nintendo to do such for ‘Project X’, I was going for more of a ‘Oh that would be cool, I wonder why they didn’t do this’ comment.

          • AnimusVox

That’s pretty much what I was stating. Just an opinion. Thanks for ‘having my back’ :p

  • Kelohmello

FE characters in the modern day huh? Okay, I’m alright with it. A modern day FE on the other hand I really never want to see happen because I can’t imagine it’d hold what I like about Fire Emblem in it, but this I’m okay with as long as the game is good.

    • Sardorim

      Imagine Lucina in modern times.

    • DyLaN

Modern (like) setting + magical element? Like FFXV modern looking but still magical world.

    • Exkaiser

I dunno, maybe a modern-day Fire Emblem could be like an Advance Wars with persistent single units, or each hero unit could lead a squad a la Langrisser.

I would be totally down for a Fire Emblem of any sort aping Langrisser, actually. Since Langrisser is already FE with pauldrons, it’s only fair.

  • I’ll keep my eyes on this. I won’t say anything till they release more about the game.

  • Guest

I know someone called it in an article 1-2 months ago. Wanted FE in modern times.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Can’t wait for at least a screenshot. All they need to do is hint at Hitoshura standing next to the likes of Chrom and I’m going to throw my bank account at the screen.

The tepidness of the fandoms is interesting. I, for one, am ecstatic for the continued exposure and growth of both franchises. This game is just one way forward.

  • Sardorim

I wonder which FE characters will be in this game… I know that no matter what a lot of characters will be left out so I expect a ton of sadness and rage before acceptance.

    • Pekola

As long as they don’t give old-time characters an outrageous appaerance make-over like the special DLC in Awakening…then I’d hope it’d be fine lol.

  • This is sounding more and more attractive to me. even if it were a fire emblem game with the dark elements and tones of SMT, that would suffice for a great game to me.

  • Vash bane

cant wait to see a trailer ^^’

  • Suicunesol

I would kind of like to see the Atlas point of view. Yamagami approached Atlas with this, but I want to see what Atlas had to say about such a bizarre cross-over, and for an HD console no less! Was Atlas excited about this, or did Nintendo just throw some money and they agreed? Who’s developing this?

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I hope I can marry demons in this game. that would be so rad

    • SilentMC

I’d love to see a waifu Mara

      • DyLaN

Mara one and only true love is Arioch….. Apology in advance.

        • Leonardo Duarte

Seriously, I would Megido the shit out of’em I… Saw them.

Well, if still retain my sanity after whatching them… Do… Tha-

*Leonardo was tanken to the sanatory after imagining this scene*

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            You’re an archer huh

          • Leonardo Duarte

            Nay, I’m not that Leonardo.

            Though bows are nice.

  • Surgeon of Death

I almost forgot about this game. It explains the $30 nintendo promo.

  • Shane Guidaboni

This is going to be an incredible game.

  • Thatguy

Hitoshi Yamagami reminds Adachi with his *oops, i said too much* after info.

    So… expect unexpected :D

  • Skyer Ist

  • JustThisOne

I wonder how much “Pray tell, what is this curious contraption?” kind of thing there will be, haha.

  • I want this to be good though the lack of info on it sounds like something that could be canned any time.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I hope its a new play style not just a TRPG or card game like all the other crossovers. blow my mind with something mind blowing Nintendo/index

    • Armane

Hopefully they combine the two games’ gameplay; so it’ll be a turn based strategy RPG with the press turn system.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        Or….action RPG turn based strategy

        • Magoo111

Why would these two series, neither of which were action RPGs, create an action rpg when mixed?

        • DyLaN

………….What the hell is tht? How do you do turn based strategy + ARPG?

  • Dragard Kaos

I could see the gameplay being similar to the Devil Survivor games. Tactics grid movement, followed by traditional first-person RPG combat.

    • Virevolte

      Yeah, it sounds plausible.

I imagine the game to propose the two kind of gameplay. With the rpg-adventure phases and all-out war phase.

      (…who said Suikoden ? ^^)

    • LustEnvy

I won’t play it if it’s first person. Sucks me right out of the game if I can’t see my characters. This would be a mistake. You can see the characters in FE, and I hope they stick to that. Having so many characters, and they decided to stick them behind the camera? That’d be silly.

  • Pekola

They’ll probably make some Original Characters for the game set in a modern setting and then make the world all post-apocalyptic due to some universe colliding event.

Magic and old weapons happen. Modern post-apocalyptic setting happens. Heroes from FE and SMT are pulled into it.

I mean, that’s how most crossovers go, right? Lol

  • Mordina

I wonder if Robin will be mentioned somehow even if vaguely…

  • Jonathan Tse

Nintendo/Atlus, please do not use isometric view. so many sRPGs use it, and it’s annoying as hell.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

So it takes place in the year 201X?

  • Warboss Aohd

I have high hopez fer dis.

  • Göran Isacson

Huh, so the FE-guy had the idea to cross two franchises who aren’t that thematically connected, and he wants to set it in modern times which is something one franchise has stayed very far away from and the other isn’t wholly committed to… well, I gotta say that the challenges this project faces has me raising eyebrows, but they are eyebrows of interest. Can this work? I do hope so.
