Animal Crossing: New Leaf Sells Over 500,000 In U.S., Boosts 3DS Sales

By Ishaan . July 18, 2013 . 6:00pm

The Nintendo 3DS sold nearly 225,000 units during the month of June in the U.S., and was the best-selling videogame system for the month. Sales of the device were spurred on by the release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf and other existing 3DS games.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold over 505,000 copies between retail and digital, Nintendo of America reported this afternoon. Over 20% of these sales were digital sales via the Nintendo eShop, which is the second-highest retail-to-digital ratio on 3DS, only behind Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Meanwhile, another recent release, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, sold more than 108,000 copies in its second month, while Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon sold another 115,000 copies in its fourth month. Sales of Luigi’s Mansion are now at 750,000 copies in the U.S. alone.

Nintendo of America also add that their internal trackers indicate Animal Crossing: New Leaf’s strong sales will continue into July. It should be interesting to see how the game sold in its second month in their next sales report.

you don’t say lol Its AC The best Nintendi drug ever

  • fyi1191

I must be the only one who doesn’t get the appeal of Animal Crossing.
Nice to see it doing so well.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

Must I show you,,,,,*blood shot eyes*

      • EtroAnime

This is why I am scared to try it even though it doesn’t really appeal to me, I might get hooked! Still I will give it a shot when I pick up a 3DS.

    • AkuLord3

Its a tricky game to show off to others…ilife-simulation games you know

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

I dont reeally get it either.

    • Corey Owens

I was really enjoying it until I experienced just about everything there is to do.

Now, I simply don’t have the motivation to go on everyday just to collect things. I see that time and just think how I could spend it otherwise.

The game having no real story is kind of detrimental for me. I think that’s why I like the Harvest Moon games.

      • Doctor Nebula

So you’re saying you’ve experienced all the events too? The point of ac is to play it a slow-pace, there’s no fun of rushing through it.

        • Corey Owens

The problem is that I didn’t rush through it at all. I just got tired of doing the same exact thing everyday with the same results.

          • idrawrobots

Maybe you don’t play it every day (you should). The exact reason I have the download is because I only want to play this about a half an hour a day, unless I get friends together and we play Mini Games, and push each other into Pitfalls.

    • Haseyo

I was the same until I gave it a shot. It’s really fun and relaxing.

    • Guest

“You have to try it to understand it” the game.

If you play along with someone else is more interesting :)

    • RovCal

your not alone. and i am too old to risk playing a game whose visuals might embarrass me if someone watches me playing it.

  • MrRobbyM

Funny you say that. I just bought Animal Crossing because of the Gamestop sale but I’ve yet to buy a 3DS because of the lame colors. Ball is in your court, Nintendo.

    • Haseyo

The colors? Really? So sad that such a fantastic system with great games cannot be in your hands because…the mutha humpin’ color.

      • MrRobbyM

Yes. Really. The colors. If I’m going to spend that much money on something I’m going to be using a lot and have fond memories of it, I’m going to mane damn sure I like the color of it.

        • I had the same problem, wanting a blue 3DS but not an XL so I could use my Kingdom Hearts case on it.
So I wound up getting the Fire Emblem 3DS despite having never played a Fire Emblem game before and it turns out I loved the game, too.

    • Suicunesol

Which color are you looking for?

      • MrRobbyM

I’d love a black/purple XL or all purple. I HATE how most of them are white on the inside.

    • Are you me? Because I have the same problem. I do not want blue, red, or pink, Nintendo. Just give me Black or White and I’ll take it. I really don’t like the color options, and I’m waiting for new colors.

I planned on buying the Animal Crossing 3DS, but it was a Bestbuy-exclusive-online-only in Canada. Oh, and you couldn’t even pre-order it. Now it goes for over 300 on Craigslist and Ebay.

      • MrRobbyM

Same situation but for the Pikachu XL. They weren’t kidding when they said it was limited edition. It sold out everywhere in a week or less.

        • Enzo

My brother actually found one in a Wal-Mart close by (a popular one) about a month ago. He was asking me if he should buy it. I said it was up to him, and told him that if I were him I would buy it (I didn’t have $200 to spare considering bills). He doesn’t regret buying it, and he wants to resell it but he is also considering keeping it for himself because it’s really nice.

    • popyea

I was the same, but I happened to love the animal crossing XL. I held off buying a 3ds until it came out and even ended up paying out the ass by importing since it wasn’t available in my country. I finally have a cute handheld that I love the look of though.

  • EtroAnime

It is really hard sitting by and watching all this cool games come out for the 3DS and I don’t have one. I said I wouldn’t get one until Bravely Default comes out, but that might change.

    • Lightthrower

And by that time you’ll have much more than just Bravely Default to buy. Fire emblem, Project X Zone, Etrian Odyssey 1/4 etc etc :-P

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Kid Icarus, Resident Evil(if you like that sort of thing) all the things that came out in 2012 and on the eshop.

Prepare to drop 400$ flat on this machine.

    • RovCal

these games are good, and appeal to a larger audience. I like u will buy 3ds when that good old jrpg style of psOne FF’s master piece that is bravely default surface on the western shores. the only game that warrants a buy right now or atleast tops the list is fire emblem.

  • I love seeing AC doing so well! I bought my second 3DS XL (the bundle) and the physical copy on the day of release and I haven’t regretted it :)

  • CirnoLakes

That’s no surprise. Games do sell hardware, not the other way around. And New Leaf has been a particularly anticipated title. Nintendo hardware today sells, in particular, primarily on Nintendo software. Game franchises like Animal Crossing is why their hardware industry is still successful today.

What’s amazing is how much the popularity of Animal Crossing has grown since its original release. New Leaf has been one of the most anticipated titles this year. I expect this game to sell even better than Wild World. Which is world record worthy.

To put that into perspective, Call of Duty WISHES that it sold as many copies as this is going to sell. And yet, everyone in the industry is copying a certain first person shooter instead of a certain fantastic sandbox game.

    • Guest

I do hope Animal Crossing continues to sell steadily as is doing in Japan, where it has sold 4 million copies.

Word-of-mouth and all buzz around this and other 3DS games could attract more consumers on the next months, maybe even prompting the reinvigoration of handhelds as a primary gaming device and thus keeping pace on AC sales?

OK, enough of speculation, I’m going to sleep x)

  • Aristides

I’m glad handhelds are surpassing home consoles in the US. So much for the smartphone killed the handheld lol.

  • Higashi no Ame 東の雨

My first 3DS game was Animal Crossing A New Leaf. But I bought 3DS because of Pokemon XY.
