The highlight of this week’s Nintendo eShop update on 3DS is Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale. This is one of the three games included in Level 5’s Guild 02 compilation, and is designed by Kaz Ayabe, the creator of My Summer Vacation.

You play as Sohta, a young boy living in a town where monsters surface to battle each other every Friday. Sohta is new to town and takes it upon himself to solve the town’s mysteries by talking to the residents and finding out the secret behind the monster appearances. You can also find and collect monster cards that let him battle his friends.

And his name suppose to be “Shota”? Unless they changed the romanization for…terminology purposes.

    • Grape Monet

I don’t think they’d change the name for terminology purposes, since “Shota” is a real name.

    • Smooosh

Am I missing something here? Isn’t he called “Sohta”? o.o

      • sfried

Yeah that was my point. His name is “Shota” yet it is spelled “Sohta”.

        • Suicunesol

His name is Souta/Sohta in Japanese. Not Shota. Nothing was changed.

          • Ferofax

Yep, long O. Like, Oh-ta, except there’s an S in front.

  • GibbRS

I’m intrigued. I got Boku no Natsuyasumi vibes looking at that screenshot.

    • katamari damacy

except it isn’t as free roaming and self-directed as Boku no Natsuyasumi. There’s a linear story you’re expected to follow with no deviation. However since it’s the closest we’ll ever get to Boku no Natsuyasumi in North America it’s good.

  • Rytan

I’m tempted, but the last two Guild games I picked up disappointed me. How long is it? Is it very replayable?

    • Marcelo G

Same here. I would be fine if it is short, I just hope it is *good* good, not decent-ish like the last two Guild games.

      • Rytan

I took the plunge and got it anyway. It’s basically a little life sim where you run around town, doing little errands for people and collection glowy orb things that eventually become cards which you then use to battle people. I haven’t gotten far enough to see the actual monsters though. Still too early to say if this was actually worth it or not.

Really interested to know what people think of it. There are literally no reviews online as of now. The tone looks perfect; I just want to know if there’s a decent enough game behind it all to justify the purchase. I have $30 of eshop credits via SMT and FE that are burning a hole in my pocket.

          • Rytan

I finally beat the main game, haven’t done the bonus stuff. It took me roughly 8 hours. Overall, I’d say it’s worth it. I find it more enjoyable and relaxing than both Liberation Maiden and Starship Damrey. It’s just so charming and adorable. The best way to really sum it up is “Shenmue for 10 year old”. It’s mostly story driven, but it’s a very simple and silly story. Most of the card battling is optional besides one or two battles. And the story… really does get pretty crazy and confusing in the later half. But overall, it’s a cute and unique game. I’d rate it 7/10.

The EU 3ds eShop listed Earthbound, Metroid and several other SNES titles, as well as a “SNES” category in the update. However, it was not mentioned in “Recent arrivals” and the icons are completely blank. It bugs out if you attempt to click, or purchase them

It appears like a glitch, but is this a hint of what is to come? Thanks in advance!

    • Migon

Same for me, I can even see Wii U games and the pricing on them
But SNES games for the 3DS would be god like but hopefully it’s some hint what might come.

  • malek86

Very tempted to get that Shantae, especially for that price. I heard only good things about it.

  • 324234

I’d really like to play AOTFM, but they’ve /consistently/ put the Guild games at half price..

  • Learii

thx for the head up I go buy it

  • SilentMC

After watching Pacific Rim, I’m really in the mood to see guys in rubber suits fighting like this. Been most excited for this Guild 02 game.

  • Karmistral

    Shingeki no Fridays, indeed

    • Ferofax

      More like, Fridays no Kyojin.

Except they’re Kaijuu. I don’t think I’m making much sense.

      • Karmistral

        Fridays no Kaijuu, it is

        • Ferofax

Or, we could go technical and:
          “Friday Kaijuu no Kougeki!”

          • Karmistral

I’ll go with the first two– the Title would be too much

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Attack of the Friday Monsters and Shantae

  • Hours

    Can’t wait to try this.
