By Ishaan . July 21, 2013 . 7:00pm

At the San Digeo Comic-Con this past week, Namco Bandai announced Soulcalibur 2 HD Online for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game is slated for release this fall and will include Tekken’s Heihachi, who was in the PS2 version of Soulcalibur 2.

Additionally, Namco Bandai also announced that Masaaki Hoshino will serve as producer on the Soulcalibur series in the future. Hoshino’s Twitter account is now the official Twitter for the series’ Project Soul development team.

Hoshino’s past involvement with the Soulclibur series had him as a programmer on Soulcalibur 2, lead programmer on Soulcalibur IV, and Technical Programming Director on Soulcalibur V.

This makes me think they’re releasing SC2 HD to get people hyped for a new game. Perhaps for next-gen?

    • Tre W

If even Capcom hasn’t made any real plans regarding a new SF for next-gen, I don’t think Bamco will do so immediately.

I’m thinking “Lost Swords” is an upgrade to 5. Maybe restoring some of the missing characters and the extra content that they didn’t have time to implement?

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 水木

It’s not that they didn’t have time, all of the character endings were done they just didn’t put it into the game for some stupid reason

        • midgard229

cuz namco didnt wanna use more money because they had no faith -_-

    • Ni

Soul Calibur Lost Swords might be that new game

  • http://lookingglass.kokidokom.net/ gundamjehutykai

Not sure what to make of the announcement. After all, it seems like namco themselves don’t know what to do with the soul series. The support for SCV dwindled really quickly and it was clear that the the game was unfinished, especially the single player portion.

New blood could help stabilise the boat but will it be enough to push the series back on a standing with the titans of the genre?

  • Craig Mikucki

The story in five was just…..not good. They need to go back and redo everything at this point. Do something like the newest Mortal Kombat did. That time leap screwed things up so badly because it wasn’t done right.

    • Nanaki

Did they fix the story in Mortal Kombat??

      • http://thespellcraftcolumn.wordpress.com Rudolph Consuegra

It got hit with the reset button so yes and no in a sense.

      • Craig Mikucki

Yes. After all the stupid crap that happened, Raiden sent a message/warning back in time to his past self so all the stupid crap doesn’t happen. That is how it was fixed, and where the newest game’s story starts off from.

        • Kaihedgie

Fixed? Fixed?! 90 percent of Earth’s original forces killed off and used as cannon fodder for the villains is not what I would call “fixed”

          • Craig Mikucki

Is that what happened? Well my mistake. I didn’t actually play the game. I’m just saying what I heard from friends that did. But that makes sense anyways, didn’t MK have a crazy amount of characters? I’m sure the ones that are left were taken very special care of by the developers. But I could be wrong.

          • Zeik56

            There’s like 3 left. Lol.

      • Hunts Rattata

They retold the plot of the first three games, but with Raiden trying to alter the timeline based on a cryptic message from his future self. Some of what happened was dumb, but it was mostly good.

        • Sardorim

Never forget the Sindel scene or what they did to poor Sub-Zero…

    • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

My opinion for what needs to happen with SC (besides hopefully making it so that the time jump never happened), remove customized characters. Yes I know that’s controversial, in fact I myself have spent hours creating characters in SC3 and SC4 (and it was basically the only reason I wanted to buy SC5) but I honestly believe that it ultimately hurt the series. When it has become the only reason for me to buy a new entry in the series, it must be a problem. It also cheapened the established characters and the over all universe of the series, imo. CC by definition takes away from things like story and character design. And guest characters did that well enough on their own, I’d rather not have guests in the next game either.

That’s why I think Namco should either go back to their basics with the Soul series or just make a new weapon based “Fighter Maker” series… or pursue both options in separate games. SC5 was in a sense the best Fighter Maker game ever… now I want a real Soul Calibur, please.

I could be ok with a basic customized costumes mode for official
characters, something like what Tekken 6 has (hopefully with all of the customizations suiting each character, rather than transforming them into some kind of deformation), but nothing more than that. Leave that Ronald Mcdonald vs Goku stuff for another game, that doesn’t sound like SC at all.

      • metaxzero

What exactly does removing custom characters fix besides you knowing you won’t have to run into custom characters based on icons? Just sounds less like you want to fix Soul Calibur and more like you don’t like seeing Ronald Mcdonalds and Gokus.

They already shouldn’t have scaled back the story in SC5. They shouldn’t go scaling anything else back. They should build up the game again.

        • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

For me, it totally breaks the atmosphere and story of the game to see stuff like that in the game, even if only online. And why play as Siegfried when you can play as some other random character you like more outside of SC but with the same moveset? It renders all those character personalities useless, imo.

Besides, I’m not saying it should be removed from existence entirely, but that I don’t get how a kind of “fighter maker” is being made inside an established fighting game and it’s world when it could be it’s own beast of a game. It’d be better for both custom character creation as well as the SC series as a whole. And hell, I made those kind of characters myself, but I still don’t think it helps the game. There’s already enough for the devs to focus on when it comes to gameplay, balance, story and the official characters.

          • metaxzero

Even if only online? You mean the silly game tag names, the vulgar players, and the weird not serious playstyles of some players didn’t break the atmosphere for you? I don’t even get why you are looking for that in online matches. And why play as Siegfried or any other SC character? How about just liking the character? Their background story, the way they mesh with the world (something no custom character can ever do with their generic voices, quotes, and lack of personality to themselves). There are plenty of people who still love SC characters even if they love making characters.

It’s not really a fighter maker. You’re just creating characters and making them fight in a SC style. And I really question the ability of that to stand on its own as a game. Sounds like a stinker waiting to fail if it isn’t attached to some meat (like the Soul Calibur series). Like frosting without a cake to be on. After all, Fighter Maker (the game) never got a sequel. Don’t think it did well.

I still don’t see how removing this somehow makes the game better. You’re removing a well recieved mode that has been with the series for 3 games. And in its place you get…..what?

          • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

You get more time, effort, and resources going into the things that helped make SC a great series to begin with. I’m talking about this happening with an all new SC game from scratch btw, not some hypothetical SC5 remake or update.

And that other stuff online can be easily overlook, ignored, or doesn’t have nearly as much impact. And I have no problem knowing I’m playing against other human people anyways, as much as I’d be aware of that as when fighting a person sitting right next to me. That stuff doesn’t effect the setting or really anything else as much as I feel that CCs do.

And I don’t think a new Fighter Maker would flop at all if done right. If everyone knows it’s coming from the Soul team or even like midgard229 mentioned maybe they could create something like a spinoff from SC. In fact, then I’d worry that it might overshadow the SC series completely. Especially because it’d open up an even bigger world of customizing far more aspects of the game.

          • metaxzero

And what was all that again? Good gameplay, intriguing (if cheesy) story, and single player modes like weapon master? I doubt the folks working on CC mode are also responsible for everything else. Heck, I doubt CC mode is even that taxing on the game’s development. SC5 was just rushed.

I don’t get how you can ignore all that and get all “immersed” in the game’s world and lore in online despite al that, yet the moment you see someones CC, NOW it is broken?

Like I said, there is a reason it has been nearly a decade since the last Fighter Maker (2D and 3D). And I really question how much pull the Soul team will have for the game. Though I wouldn’t worry about either game cannibalizing the other. Soul Calibur fans play for Soul Calibur and custom CC fans play for CC. Though I don’t know if the exclusively CC crowd is even that big

      • midgard229

lol wtf? remove custom characters? its the only reason some people play this game. You know, not everyone creates Goku’s and such right? Some people like me actually create original characters, and well, its the only game that offers great character creation tools for a character designer such as myself……..

How bout just remove all the standard characters and make a purely Create-a-character game? How’d you like that? because i would love it. SC’s story has always sucked. it was just Lore before, The only reason 5 got messed up is because namco told project soul to stop and not finish the game

        • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

That’s exactly what I’m saying, it has become “the only reason some people play the game”. The focus of the series has completely changed for some people as a result of the CC mode getting so good and the other aspects that were praised earlier in the series taking a huge hit.

And what you said in that second part, it really hits me that you didn’t read my comment thoroughly. I think you just got offended at my controversial idea that has to do with your favorite thing in the series. I already suggested what you said, as I already know that’s exacly what some SC fans today want and wouldnt mind seeing – a competitive and well made “Fighter Maker”. I just rather suggested that the CC mode separate from the SC series and become two separate games. I and others, however, totally enjoyed everything about SC before SC3 and CCs came up, such as the characters and story.

          • midgard229

ha sorry i didnt finish reading ur first post. Well I thought soul blade and soul edge was ok, I hated soul cal 1 and 2, and didnt like it again until 3 brought CC lol.

Lets hope for a character creating game!!!! though it wouldnt sell well. maybe if it was still titled Soul Calibur: Something something. It could still sell with the name

          • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

Apology accepted, lol. Actually Soul Blade/Edge was my favorite of those three too, even though I did like all of them.

I think making a CC game that’s a spinoff of SC could actually help it take off. Then again, being dissociated from SC might open up for even more customization ideas. Simply making it known that it’s from Namco Bandai and the Soul team might be enough for it to work.

Anyways, maybe I’m completely wrong about this, but it’s just an idea. I personally think it’d be a win win for everyone though.

          • midgard229

would totally be a win. I would spend loads of cash on all that DLC lol

  • z_merquise

All I’m hoping is that Soulcalibur: Lost Swords to be their updated version of SC 5. The team have lot’s of things that they weren’t able to add because higher-ups forced them to rush the game and as much as I enjoy SC 5, it’s obviously lack in content.

Best of luck to the new producer and I hope the SC team can just take their time polishing the game and defend it when someone tried to interfere and force them to rush the game. Something that Harada and the Tekken team did.

  • Vesperion

I hope this wont be a half assed port like Soul Caliber was on 360. Made me fire up the ol Dreamcast so i could play around with the opening lol

  • Ni

the amount of 9KK online woudn’t be even funny.

I just hope that hey bring the old character in a new instalment of the franchise. And don’t pull that crap of ‘LOL Years had passed and this are the new host of character lol’. Finish the story arc first and then change the host of characters. i’m not gonna write much. They just need to do like they were doing before SC5 this will be enough.

PS: Ivy just stopped aging for the sake of fanservice (this is coming from a ivy player) :p

edit: HOLY ****! INFERNO WILL BE PLAYABLE? is that true?

  • サレム

Going from the most balanced soul calibur and probably the best fighting game of this generation back to soul calibur 2 is not something pleasing. They could have just released an ultimate version with a well done story mode and extra characters for versus if they wanted to just bring back the iconic characters.

    • AkuLord3

SC5 as the most balance and best fighter? pfft yup it SURE…wasn’t~ If you liked it that’s fine but let’s not pretend it didn’t have many flaws. I don’t see them returning to SC2 just for iconic character but since it was one (if not is) of the best Soul Calibur game and especially playing VERY different to what it is now

      • Muffum

I’d contest the “best fighter of the generation” note, but it is definitely the most balanced SC in a while. I mean, that’s exactly what may eliminate it from being best current gen fighter; the huge focus on gameplay balance over extra features over the limited development period they had.

      • Syn

Am with this guy^^ SC V maybe really balanced but SC II is known to be the most balanced in the series, the overly complicated guard impact setup of V is what makes it slightly unbalanced imo. SC has always been about simplicity, depth and story.

        • サレム

What’s complicated about it? It’s the same except it usess critical gauge. You also have the option to just guard without using gauge.

          • Syn

So if you have the option of using it without the gauge, whats the point of having the one with the critical gauge attached in the first place??(in game like SC, thats overly complicated with no real benefit)
Also, the significance of a depleting critical gauge is more of a gimmick, its only in Soul Blade/Edge where losing your critical gauge actuality had a huge effect on the flow of combat due to the risk of weapon loss, heck, even the critical edges from the PS1 game where better as well as harder to finish once you landed one mid match, there was a fair risk/reward setup. The current iteration felt incomplete just like many other portions of the game

          • サレム

The point is that one gives you a wider window of frames to retaliate at the cost of meter. SC5 is a very aggresive game unlike SC2. The game wants you to attack, but I guess standing in front of your opponent and being able to punch, kick or throw is overly complicated since you have three options instead of two and all of them have different frame numbers.

          • Syn

SC has always been aggressive, like I said before, the previous iteration of the critical gauge encouraged more aggression than this one, you literally lost your weapon if your on defence for too long, as it stands, you could block to your hearts content. Anyway, for me, it felt unnecessary to have two version of the same thing, one basically being an easy version of the other. Its great, but the previous versions served a better more balanced purpose imo

  • anthony apduhan

I just want my Talim and Yeong Seong back T-T

    • Kefkiroth

I just want proper Kilik, not the one right now with a bunch of random weapons… T-T

    • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

And I want Sophitia and Taki… actually I was totally against any character being taken out or replaced.

      • midgard229

blame namco, they didnt let project soul finish the game. Taki wasnt needed, but talim, zasalemel and yeong seong were needed because they were actually different fighting styles.

The director of SCv said namco diddnt let him finish. He said the story wass only 25% complete, he had working models of the new cassandra which fought with a long sword and no shield, as well as sketches for Rock.

sad Namco didnt believe in soul cal enough -_-

        • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

I don’t only select who I play as based on the moves and fighting styles or even tiers and their gameplay nuances. I picked Taki because I liked her particular style, story, character design, and everything else about her too. I didn’t like Natsu in more ways than one, and I tried to give her a fair shot. She and Sophitia and others were there since the very first game, it’s like taking Blanka or Chun-li out of SF, a move which even Capcom has finally learned can be damaging.

Even if they had been able to finish all they set out to do, I think the time leap would still have brought too many changes that bothered me, although it would have been a much better game.

(Also, in relation to my other posts, it’s funny that knowing they had been given such limitations, the CC mode still came out so well yet far more traditional, and arguably more important in comparison, aspects of the series got left in the dust)

          • midgard229

Meeeeeeh i’d say for most that the CC is the most important part of the series now. But they did need to keep the other characters. And well Sophitia was still in it and hotter than ever honestly lol. sad taki wasnt included because the creator said they made her already and said shes still hott, and was going to be in natsu’s story, but we know how that went

      • fayt255

That what you said is why I never bought SCV. I really missed the old characters and at the time rented SCV because I couldn’t afford to buy the game at the time it came out and I end up just playing the older ones and liking those better.

  • Guest

  • Judgephoenix

I wish they would have done 2 and 3 as a dual pack would have been awesome. Especially since 3 was only on ps2.

  • Monterossa

huh? a programmer turns into a producer? that’s interesting.

  • Chiupon

I’m just gonna play 3 and pretend the later 2 aren’t real. The story in 5 was okay for what it was, but the fact that they didn’t finish it left a really bad taste in my mouth. It took like 30 minutes to beat the story mode, and it’s the ONLY story mode…

like wow even chronicles of the sword or w/e that shoddy rts was had a better story…

  • Abysswalker90

Good to know SC is not dead.
I’d love for them to get the opportunity to make a great installment at last. Heck, I’d love it if they actually finished SCV and re-released a complete edition.

  • Crimson_Cloud

In SC3 you had awesome Chronicles of the Sword mode to play with your custom character, unlike in the last one where it was practically empty. Bring the awesome SC3 again and I’ll buy it.

    • Syn

Am with you there, at least our characters wherent just stock clones, they had their own unlockable moves sets, and chronicles of the sword, that was a great way to make your character feel special, and not just some random stand in.

      • Crimson_Cloud

Exatcly! Not all different moves sets were great but it was unique and your character stood apart from the other. And we had 3 types of shops with three different ladies to buy from. The game was so full on content it’s not even funny. Today they just focus on online play and thats that…

        • Syn

Makes you wonder what the point of all that extra space on discs is for right?? I mean they stuffed all that along with individual multi cutscenes, a game within a game, etc etc, and yet the thing never crossed the 3.5gb mark, yet we have 16gb dual layer dvds and 50gb blueray discs.doing what?? HD textures cant take up all that space, seems to me like most ps2 games where bigger in scale overall than many of this gens games, save for a few exceptions. Its a shame really.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

bad feeling to how the games are going to turn out now

  • Weird Al Yankovic

Bring back Taki, make Ivy competitive again, and make it for current and/or next-gen consoles (no more handeld-only bullshit anymore like SC Destiny). That’s all I need.

  • Folk Hellfang

Bone chilling. I consider IV to be the low point of the series. The fighter renaissance is official dead.

  • Göran Isacson

No idea how to really take this, since I’ve never heard about this guy before and the stories of Namcos lackluster support for the Soul series kiiinda makes this sound like they’re just kicking it over to whomever they can find who wants to handle it. Which can mean both good and bad things, but unless this change in management comes with an increase in support from Namcos money coffers, well… not sure this will help.

  • https://twitter.com/A_Beast_of_Prey Equinox K

Considering I grew up playing the first Souls game when I was kiddo and then Soul Calibur at a movie theater, I hope that the next Soul Calibur game that comes is a return to the series roots. I have no issue with new characters, but most of them were carbon copies and the story though interesting was lackluster and the game as a whole did feel very much incomplete. May with a new producer and with SC2 HD coming out it will give reason for Namco to throw support behind the series full force the next go around.

  • Jean Alcantara

Damn it, I just beat this game yesterday! :(

  • protofox

while this news could be good..or bad..is yet to be seen..however the fact SC2 is coming back with online play and characters that where removed for no good reason in 5 is enough for me right now to have faith restored in the series.

  • Ben Sylvia

May the force be with you.

    (please don’t kill me)

  • Kelohmello

What’s the point if I can’t play as Link :(

  • Hector Velar

hope they dont pull a crapcom here and go on saying well if SCII HD dosent sell enough we wont release a new one or fix SCV…as crapcom did with Darkstalkers.
