Animal Crossing: New Leaf Sales Are Over 5 Million Worldwide

By Ishaan . July 31, 2013 . 2:20am

Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold over 500,000 copies when it launched in North America last month, but Nintendo have provided updated sales figures for the game in their latest financial report.

As of June 30th, Animal Crossing: New Leaf has sold 1.19 million copies outside Japan, and a total of 5.4 million copies worldwide. This counts both retail and digital sales.

Meanwhile, worldwide sales of Luigiā€™s Mansion: Dark Moon are at 2.65 million. This figure, too, includes both retail and download sales.

Pickin’ fruit makes for the best entertainment.

    • Enzo

Don’t even get what you’re trying to say. Saying Nintendo is otherwise failing? Because Sony released sales figures of The Last of Us, which is doing numbers like these as well. I think any of the companies would do this.

      • donkeybutt

        No, I don’t think you understand. I wasn’t kidding. Halp. :’ (

        • Sango

You spent 100hrs on 3DS sound?

          • donkeybutt

I don’t have a smartphone, so it’s my only source of portable music. : D (don’t hurt me, please.)

          • Sango

Its all good. honestly I had no idea you could use as an mp3. I thought it was just for recording sounds. I’ll have to check it out. I dropped my ipod a week ago and now the screen is all busted.

        • Enzo

Looks like we got something in common.

        • Guest

OK, now I don’t feel so bad. Oh, also, Super Street Fighter 4? That’s only in one of the 2 other places I play that game on. On steam I have about 200 hours logged in that game. I think I may have an obsession.

        • OK, now I don’t feel so bad. See Super Street Fighter 4? That’s only one of 3 places I play it on. On Steam alone, I have about 200 hours logged in. The 3DS is probably what started my obsession, though, since I finally had a place to fully practice my Guy with.

      • Highasthesky

His comment was pretty straight forward, i’m surprised you were able to bend it so negatively.

        • Enzo

Not really. Whether you know it or not, the term “cherry picking” is very common and without any context, that’s exactly what it looked like. What he said could have been put into context the very least. Before he made his response with the screen shot, he was at 1 up, 7 down (because pretty much everyone else thought he was saying the same thing).

  • kinda curious what the game before it sold now.

    • Skyer Ist

DS game (Wild World) sold 11,7 million copies lifetime worldwide. Wii game (City Folk) sold 3.38 million (as of may 2009). Series more popular in a portable space. 3DS game selling very good and this is just the beginning (released in EU and US just in june 2013, and still selling in Japan).

      • Armane

City Folk could have sold poorly for reasons beyond being a console game. Personally I didn’t buy it because there was barely anything new added (grass erosion actually being to the game’s detriment); which the reviews at the time reflect (~13% lower according to metacritic).

        • Enzo

I know you aren’t really saying this, but I don’t think 3.38 million copies is poor.

          • Armane

Indeed. But relative to the hugely popular Wild World, it sold poorly.

  • Skyer Ist

    Amazing Sales.

  • Kai2591

I haven’t caught the Animal Crossing fever… I don’t understand why it’s so popular. I haven’t bought it, fearing it might not be my cup of tea.

    • pressstart

Stay away if you value your free time or want to play other games :0

      • Kai2591

lol that’s what I thought haha.

      • fyi1191

Got it. I’ll heed your advice.

    • Virevolte

I bought it and I didn’t play it very long. If you think you won’t be interested, it’s probably not for you.

      • Kai2591

        Thanks for the advice :)

    • Miss_Madness

The game is oddly fun for what it is if you invest time in it. I know people that never play this game or were interested in it before get sucked into it as well. The best thing to do is find someone you know that already has the game and is willing to let you play around for a bit. There are multiple saves after all.

Give yourself three days of play (in short bursts) to gauge what you think and then make a judgement.

      • Kai2591

Guess I should give it a try if I get the chance.

    • MrRobbyM

I said the same thing. New Leaf is my first animal crossing. The more you play it, the tighter is clings to your soul.

      The animals. They need me.

    • Arrei

To be perfectly honest, it might just be the kind of game you have to play to know if you’ll like it.

That’s how it got started in the west, to begin with. Seeing commercials for the game and copies on the shelves of some quirky little game about just living day to day in a village of animals, thinking “Eh, I’ll give it a shot.”

      And now, years later…

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

It’s good to see the game is selling well.

  • Linhua

… lol… not gonna lie… this game is ruining my life… XD

… just so I can make the Mayor’s life better!

= … wow that… made me kinda sad just now..

    • ronin4life

You know, everyone always said Nook was evil for giving you a home with a free loan at 0% interest…
But the villagers, Tortimer and Issabela aren’t for ambushing you, naming you “Mayor” and forcing you to fix their run down shack at your own PERSONAL EXSPENSE? A Village with NO taxes, NO elections and a populace and former mayor who did nothing to build up the town until a suitable patsy could be found that could be given a puppet title and forced to pay out of pocket to build an entire Village…

      • piichan

Isabelle! she’s behind everything! turning you into a puppet mayor, not letting you do things without her “assistance” Tortimer is also in this, making it seem like the island is a place of relaxation. The money beetles aren’t there for coincidence! It’s there to make us grind for money, to finance those projects which the villagers hardly donate to. It’s a conspiracy i tell you! This is bigger than Nook! *screams around town*

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

*EYES BLOOD SHOT* want to visit?

      • Linhua

        … heh… sure… haven’t yet done that before… been wanting to though!

        … okay… how do we do this…?

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

we have need each others FC

          • Linhua

… alright, how does I check my code…?

… is it my 3DS Code we need or an Animal Crossing: New Leaf code…?

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

            3DS FC ^_^ heres mine 3351-4396-4003

          • Linhua

            … excellent!

            … i’ve added you.

            … here’s mine: 4038-6005-7335

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

            added :D

    • ANIMALS OF THE WORLD UNITE! You have nothing to lose but your save data!!

      • Linhua

        … and my Sanity… XD

  • Is that true? Those sales numbers shown are as of “June 30”? I must say that I am somehow surprised. Not that I hate this game, given that I played most of his series (never had City Folk, though).

    • Skyer Ist

Yes, Q1 FY 2013/2014 ended june 30. Today NIntendo provided updates on hardware and software.

  • yes, happy to see luigi doing so well

  • $36487238

:-D I might just get this game when I buy a new 3DSXL. Many of the stores here near my place bundle a free game so this might just be it. Awesome to hear Animal Crossing has made it big with its jump to the 3DS.

Matte, matte… guys, just need a lil’ advice: physical or digital Animal Crossing?

    • piichan

i personally bought the physical version since i haven’t upgraded from the default sd storage but since you’ll be playing this game a lot, better digital to avoid the hassle if you want to play other games.

      • $36487238

All right. Thank you for your suggestion. I’ll keep that in mind.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Even tho get new games I have to stop and water flowers and work on projects……

    • $36487238

Wow. I see myself doing that everyday too. I water plants in reality; I might water plants in my virtual town.

  • DAMN. Does any other handheld title that isn’t Mario or Pokemon do these numbers?

  • Domii

Great news for Animal Crossing fans. but unfortunately this report came with Nintys financial quarter results, which paint a very grim state for the WiiU. The 3DS along with this and a few other titles are great positive signs Ninty had this last quarter thank goodness.

  • I spent my credit money and bought the game (+_+ ) Only a couple days into it and I can feel it taking over haha!
