<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week saw the release of a game that’s been a long time coming—Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies, the fifth game in the main Ace Attorney series, which brings back a number of the series’ popular characters alongside new ones. Capcom sold 250,216 copies of Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies in the game’s first week on store shelves.

That figure is very well similar to how Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney sold back in 2007. In its first week, Apollo Justice sold 250,186 copies. Considering that there’s been a gap of six years between the two games, Dual Destinies’ sales are rather impressive and indicate that any fans that were lost in the interim have been made up for by new fans.

Also released last week was Dragon’s Crown, Vanillaware’s multiplayer brawler. The game enjoyed a very respectable debut, with 104,359 copies sold on PS3 and another 71,083 copies on PlayStation Vita.

Finally, Nippon Ichi Software released The Witch and the Hundred Knights last week as well, and the game sold close to 50,000 copies. That puts it close to the sales of 2008’s Disgaea 3, which is pretty good, considering the low sales of Nippon Ichi’s other non-Disgaea games.

Wow that is some strong DanganRonpa anime effect and its still going. Although the anime may have its faults in the animation department, I guess its doing a great job moving units. I wonder what game will they decide to anime adapt next…SMTIV?

    • Farid Belkacemi

      Pikmin :D

    • TheExile285

BlazBlue is getting an anime soon so I think BB Chrono Phantasama sales on PS3 will be very strong.

  • Herok♞

Glad to see both AA and Dragon’s Crown doing well, I wonder how well they will fair in the west.

    • Kaitsu

I can mostly assure AA will do well in the west. But Dragon’s Crown is tricky. My friends want the former, but aren’t even aware of the latter. :c

I’m getting Dragon’s Crown when it comes out of course.

      • 324234

Yet Dragon’s Crown will have a physical copy, AA won’t. Ay ay ay.

    • I’m already getting Dragon’s Crown for PS3 (Region 1), it should be come over here today :D
      so happyy

  • Chris Yuen

180k+ and counting for Dragon’s Crown. I’m happy for George Kamitani and his team. Still glad that Atlus decided to pick up the slack and go ahead with the decision to publish this game…unlike *cough* Capcom *cough*. Spiritual successor to your classic D&D series and you guys wouldn’t even consider it? Seriously.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

I agree, that was a weird move by Capcom to pass on DC, but glad that Atlus eventually picked it up nonetheless. Though I wonder what these numbers would look like if download sales were included.

      • Kevadu

It’s not just download sales, even. Media Create doesn’t even track sales from online retailers like Amazon (which is quite popular in Japan). You sort of have to take all of their numbers with a grain of salt. Of course since this applies to everything you can still compare games, but you do have to wonder if some titles favor traditional retailers more than others. For instance, a game targeting kids is probably likely to have a higher percentage of sales from traditional retailers and would therefore appear stronger in Media Create’s numbers compared to more mature titles.

        But what can you do…

    • Corey Owens

      Based Atlus

  • RovCal

    glad for dragons crown

  • ronin4life

I’m thinking Pikmin wasn’t the only thing killing M&L…

    • J_Joestar

Well M&L already surpassed Pikmin now.

  • DesmaX

Wow, congrats for Phoenix Wright and Dragon’s Crown, those are pretty nice sales.

And nice to see that Hundred Knights did well, I was scared it would meet the same fate as their other games, especially since it was released at the same week as Dragon’s Crown. Guess jumping to 3D was the thing to do

  • Demeanor

I am really looking forward to seeing the future sales numbers for Dragon’s Crown and the Witch in the West! Kihihihihi!!!

  • im happy to see AA:DS, dragon’s crown and EDF 2025, also happy to see luigi still hanging in there

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Damn, WItch didn’t do so hot.

    • Kevadu

It didn’t do bad at all for a NIS game.

  • popo123

that earth defense force 2025 game is for the ps3 not Vita

  • The only news I want to hear about this game right now is its US release date.

    Nothing else matters.

  • Guest

I look forward to Ace Attorney release overseas, I really hope sales are good enough to continue publishing the game outside Japan because as it stands now a sequel is inminent :D

  • Farid Belkacemi

Really happy (and kinda relieved) to see Ace Attorney 5 doing so well :)

Finally NIS sold someting that isn’t disgaea!
This AA will be my second AA so i’m looking forward to it.
Hahaha. Dragon’s Crown sold what i had expected but I was expecting 100k on Vita and 70k on Ps3

    • Suicunesol

Why? PS3 install base is more than 10x higher.

the game has a more “handheld style” to me

  • KuroNathan

I wonder why the Wii U keeps lagging behind on console sales? It has a pretty solid lineup in games and not too expensive. Granted I don’t own one but still I think it should at least catch up with the Vita, especially since this week was the release of a new pikmin game.

    • AkuLord3

I also believe that, it just need some time like any other new console. Other big games for it is close to coming out so maybe by then

      • I agree with this. After all, during the first year for the 3DS, people were proclaiming that Nintendo was going to fail and that it was basically the modern Virtual Boy…

And yet look at it now, regularly beating everything else in terms of sales with a very awesome library. People have gotta give Nintendo more credit.

  • malek86

Mmh, considering the amount of hype and the fact that it’s the first 3D game by NIS, I’m not sure those sales are particularly high. But then, I guess we’d have to see the sell-through.

Youkai Watch is falling quite a bit, time to see if sales can hold up thanks to the kids appeal, or if this will be lost due to bad timing (seriously, they should have tried and make it together with the anime).

    • It’s hype /probably/ would’ve been much more effective had they, you know… not gotten that year-long delay to the game.

Given it’s MIA status for the longest time, I think 50k is rather good, given the average for some first weeks in Japan.

      • DesmaX

And there was Dragon’s Crown too.

It wasn’t the best week to release it

        • Yeah, given that, matching to what Disgaea 3’s opening week was when it first released, for NIS? It’s admirable. There’s a lot stacked against Witch and it had a good open for what it was.

        • In fact, looking at the previous sales for NIS games? Witch is above and beyond what non-Disgaea games get. Really, I applaud it.

          • DesmaX

Oh, it even sold better than Soul Nomad. wow

They should make more Dark JRPG’s, those apparently sell better

          • Yeah, it’s sorta surprising. Of course, Soul Nomad was pretty excellent, so darker RPGs might be a good choice for them once in a while.

  • z_merquise

Dragon’s Crown is Vanillaware’s best-selling game right now. So happy to see that it sold pretty well in just the first week. Hope it continues in the coming weeks.

    • Solomon_Kano

Their most expensive game, and their biggest opening. Great risk, great reward.

      • z_merquise

Being fully hand-drawn 2D in HD is already a great risk.

Which is why Vanillaware is really special in this gen because not every developer have such dedication in making HD 2D like they do.

  • TheExile285

Spike really should have released that Daganronpa HD BEFORE the anime started, lol.

Oh well, at least we are getting the first game in the West.

So glad to see DC doing well on PS3 and Vita. Good for AA and TWaHK too.

  • Arcana Wiz

Soo Glad for Vannilaware, DC its their most ambicious project, been in Katamani head for 10 years, was rejected some times, been criticized by some people, but here it is with the best sales the company has ever had, glad that their work is bearing fruits, they really deserve it, everyone in Vannilaware its like a artist, been a fan since Ps2 days, love you guys.

  • British_Otaku

It’s unfortunate that Lego City didn’t do better, the ads on the 3DS Japanese e-Shop (for the Wii U one, not sure if the 3DS title even went to Japan) would have sold me. >_>

Otherwise, yay, I’m part of the AA5 sales, good to see that even if it flops in Japan, the series likely isn’t dead even if I’m iffy about their diving into DLC for story. Good to see Dragon’s Crown and The Witch and Hundred Knights do well too. On top of Youkai Watch, holding on to reach 100K retail.

  • Nice to see all of the games I’m looking forward to have a reasonable showing. Ace Attorney especially! Not often you get a 250k sales week like that.

Really looking forward to Witch and the Hundred Knights and Dragons Crown, too. Both have been pre-ordered, and one being so close now to being released over here is great. Glad that Witch got a decent showing for an NIS game, especially given the year-long delay. I have to wonder if it would’ve been improved, if it hadn’t gotten that delay…? Regardless of that, it’s a decent first week.

Nice to see that Dangan Ronpa’s still ticking, there– in fact it’s sales are higher than last week’s, despite the position drop. Impressive what anime can do for an older game, huh? Imagine the sales they’d get if they do Super Dangan Ronpa 2…

  • Solomon_Kano

I’ll have to call that more than respectable. This is Vanillaware’s largest opening EVER, the Vita version alone opening 20k higher than anything else they’ve made.

  • Göran Isacson

Oh man, these swelling emotions in seeing Ace Attourney 5 soar through the charts. I can’t lie, it kinda brings a tear to my eye.

And on tearful notes, I imagine Kamitani may be crying tears of relief at seeing his hard, long work pay off for the company. 170k in sales is certainly not a bad showing for Vannilla Ware titles, though I am now curious how long legs all these fancy newcomers will have. Will the Dream Team reclaim their positions later on, or will it be pushed down to number 5 and even further next week? Not to mention poor Yokai Watch, already tumbling in the ranks… then again I have no idea how much of their initial shipment those 100k sold are.
