"A World Of The Versus Epic" Trademark Hints At More Final Fantasy XV

By Spencer . August 6, 2013 . 8:22pm

imageThe Final Fantasy XV trailer has a tagline at the end of it that says "a world of the Versus epic." During the Future of Final Fantasy press conference, Siliconera asked Shinji Hashimoto if that meant Final Fantasy XV will have direct sequels like Final Fantasy XIII.

Hashimoto replied that Final Fantasy XV is a large scale game and many stories may come at a later time.

Square Enix is certainly preparing for future Final Fantasy XV stories considering they filed a trademark for "A World of the Versus Epic." Final Fantasy fansite FF-Reunion spotted the trademark, which was registered in Europe by Square Enix Japan.

More sequels in the world of Final Fantasy.
    Sounds pretty good to me.

  • http://LevelUpGeneration.blogspot.com/ KALiverin

That’s kind of weird actually. This game is supposed to be part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series, but it’s also going to start its own sub-series?

I’ll refrain from making any Inception jokes.

    • AndyLC

      It’s not anymore.

      • http://LevelUpGeneration.blogspot.com/ KALiverin

I recall the E3 trailer having Fabula Nova Crystallis in it.

      • Farid Belkacemi

Nope, it’s still part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series ;)

        • Surgeon of Death

          Yeah but Nomura :)

    • Nanaki

The moment it changed to numbered installment it pretty much became it’s own sub-series I believe. Fabula Nova Crystallis is still influencing the game’s plot but I feel better knowing that it’ll be it’s own entry (now, possibly entries.)

  • MrRobbyM

Completely fine with me as long as it retains quality and doesn’t become nonsensical silliness that SE is very prone to doing.

    • juma086

If the sequels are planned ahead of time, I think we can get a well-done compilation instead of a nonsensical mess. I just hope they don’t go out of their way to mess up the ending to set up for a sequel.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

so, will the sequel takes 7 years to make as well?

    • Symbol de Au

Wasn’t it someone from Square that said the graphics of next gen might be something close to Pixar a few years back? Might be close to Pixar in another way too.

    • LightZero

Actually FFXV didn’t truly start to be made until 2008. The 2006 trailer was just concept art. The sequels shouldn’t take too long considering all the ground work is done. That why FFXIII-2 and LR are taking less time to come out than the original FFXIII.

      • Jackie

your wrong it did start in 2006 if it started in 2008 it would not have been 7 years this game hasnt come out.

        • NewestType

Hey! We are only allowed to propose 2 arguments here.

          1. Where’s Versus

          2. Versus took to long So I hate Square

Or sometimes 3. Versus is getting a sequel and by enjoying the first game I am forced to buy each additional… I HATE SQUARE DAMMIT!

          • Jackie

actually dude i was verifying the production start only?
not why square changed a title from versus to XV

          • AJ

I’m just sitting here waiting for Type-0 :l

          • NewestType

0 is a odd case where many factors are contributing to its localization process.

  • Kai2591

    Sequels will be on mobile.

    Just kidding.

    • Asaoko

Actually, don’t even joke about it! Who knows! Look at Star Ocean! /shivers

      • Kai2591

They weren’t kidding by calling the last game ‘The Last Hope’.
        lol~

        • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

          I actually liked SO4.

          • Kai2591

Yeah I like it too actually. The battle system is AWESOME. Shame that Tri-Ace doesn’t use that battle system in their newer games of late…they could have improved upon it and made it even better.

However, I just don’t like the story of SO4, and some of the characters :/

          • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

I have to admit it, Edge after he supposedly “blew up” that one planet… OH MAI GAWD MAN UP!

Which reminds me, I’m playing Tales of the Abyss, and even Luke wasn’t that much of a downer after Akzeriuth.

          • Kai2591

            You got that right.

      • Kari

Actually Look at Breath of Fire! /shivers

        • NewestType

Somehow… I still think Square will be blamed for that.

    • RichyGaming

      Breath of Fire

      • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

        Type-0 Vita Localization

  • LaserVision

Gosh I hope not. I’d rather SE just draw a line in the sand a say FFXV is the end of Fabula Nova Crystallis. That’s it. No more. Clean slate for FFXV. The idea of Final Fantasy as sets of subseries has been a debacle for SE in my opinion.

    • Pockystix

it’s been a pretty rough mini-series. . . thing. Hope we never get anything like them again, and Square instead focuses on big titles with a better, more fleshed out goal in mind.

Cautiously optimistic for XV, but yeah. . . no more Fabula Nova Crystallis please

    • DCBlackbird

Personally since VII received all these sequels I view “FINAL FANTASY” as this banner used for these amazing stories in order get them recognition. This later builds this imaginary standard in our minds that make us believe that all final fantasy has to be either like the first 6, 9 and 12 or like 7,8,10,13 and this new 15

    • LightZero

It doesn’t work like that. Games are become more expensive over the years especially on HD. Tomb Raider making 3 million was disappointing in the eyes of SE even though to consumers that would be pretty good. It’s also about breaking even and getting a profit. SE is also hurting for money. Making sequels allow them to not only make easy money but also get a good return on their investment.

      • Nanaki

Right. It’s a little hard for people to grasp the concept that Square-Enix is a company with the prime motive of making profit off of their merchandise. Times are changing.

      • LaserVision

That’s of course, true. More wishful thinking on my part. Still I’d prefer it if SE could find a way to use the tech and assets they created for FFXV to make new games rather than return constantly to a world that may or may not be very interesting.

  • new_tradition

I think they already said they were planning to do more games in this FFXV universe now, so I’m not really surprised.

I guess they spent so much time and effort on this game, including plot content, that they don’t want it to go to waste. Might as well try to make money off it, yeah?

    • NewestType

That sounds like something a business would do… game companies arent supposed to make money.

  • DCBlackbird

If the world is as captivating as Ivalice(yes I loved XII and tactics but I had issues with XII’s combat)I’m all for it

    • Syn

Tactics/XII world was amazing, the Ivalice Alliance is truly one of SE’s shining creations, hope this one becomes that as well.

  • schwarzmasa

So basically, if the game ends up being as disliked as FFXIII, we’re going to get another trilogy? Maybe they should wait and you know…see how the game performs first?

    • DCBlackbird

If it’s by the same team as the kingdom hearts series we may be finishing this extended saga by the time Final Fantasy hit’s 20

  • Merrick

Makes sense, all offline Final Fantasies since 10 have had direct sequels.

  • Milla

A Spinoff featuring Stella Nox Fleuret… i can only dream *_*

    • Surgeon of Death

      This idea I like.

  • Unlimax

“A World Of The Versus Epic”
    VII Has come to ~

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

The more news I read about Squeenix, the more I hate them.

    • NewestType

I know its kind of a weird question; but, what kind of news articles would even make you give them a chance?

  • $61526767

Don’t really mind if they made sequels to the game. Just really going to enjoy XV. lol just hope they don’t take long to develop.

  • Isaac Sanchez

I have very little hope for this game. Dat combat…..hack and slash ftw! Square should fire nomura NOW!

  • Surgeon of Death

The games trailers look amazing. At least they seem to have put alot of effort into this one. I think Nomura can be pretty trust worthy with this one just as long as he doesn’t turn it into another fail fantasy 13.

    • Dagobert

I don’t know man… They set the bar pretty high for shitty FF game with XIII. Won’t be easy for another FF game to be as shitty as that. I think they’re challenging that title with Lightning Returns but that’s just a sequel so I’m not sure if that counts.

    • Lynx

      Hey.

Assuming you’re talking about XIII as the sequels, I’d agree.
However, the original XIII is a solid game albeit rather linear.

      • Surgeon of Death

The original was not as solid as many would have hoped. It was a HUGE disappointment. The story seemed as though it was written by a bunch of children. Although the basis for it was solid, it just seemed like a convenient excuse to kill off the core of the series trademark features like gil after battle, NON- LINEAR exploration, ACTUAL AIRSHIPS NOT IN CUT SCENES, TOWNS, NPC QUESTS, and POOR character development or characters for that matter(there are many more). It had allot of problems with the mechanics also. Toriyama even said that his aim was to take away character freedom so there would be more focus(no pun intended) on the story and the story sucked. It deserves a 7.5(SOLID) AT BEST. It wasn’t a game that was falling apart completely. Just one that wasn’t sewn together all that great.

        • Lynx

Story is entirely subjective as are a lot of things. I for one enjoyed it.

I found the characters developed fairly decently. Sure, not everyone developed but not everyone needed to.

Hope, Lightning and Snow all kinda of became likable to me by the end and I felt that Hope developed a fair amount. That’s what matters in the end, right? Whether or not YOU feel a character develops is up to your own vision and expectations, not someone else’s.

Otherwise, you’re just forcing your views onto someone else.

I will agree with the mechanics though. So glad that XIII-2 had it possible to move the cursor off of Auto-Battle.

          • KnifeAndFork

However, the game in whole felt like a tedious monotonous chore down a very long hallway with nicely painted murals on the walls depicting a world we couldn’t really explore..

          • Surgeon of Death

Agreed. Then 13-2 came. It somewhat improved on 13′s faults. But then TIME PLOT AND MONSTER PARTY MEMBERS. The characters were so out of place that it didn’t do anything for the originals poor character development. Although lightning was supposed to play a big part in the story she only appeared for what 20 minutes? Then we get a DLC ending. This whole thing seems like a giant failed experiment. They are literally trying to sell the series on graphics and past games elements(characters) because they can’t innovate or come up with a captivating story/characters.

  • Demeanor

I am really hoping for this game to hit quality, especially in storyline and system/usability, the FF name needs to take its fame back. I feel the need to compare this title to FFXIII (both being nextgen FF pioneers), I was alienated by the design decision of the game (tho I recognize the effort they took with setting/story and the enormous work on CG/graphics/scenery etc) and still, after somehow struggling through the main story, I find myself IN LOVE with FFXIII-2 for a multitude of reasons, it’s worlds better in every respect and I can’t wait to get back at it again (damn work!). I sure hope they learned the lesson and get FFXV right the first time, if so I have absolutely no problems with XV-2, XV-3 etc as long as the games deliver.

  • Alos88

I think having sequels will be a thing with each new FF going forward, it’s getting too expensive to make a brand new full-budget FF title every time, and I remember reading they were aiming for a new game every two years if possible.

  • WhyWai

It’s Square Enix we talking here. I’m sure that they have no idea what’s the plan too. Announce things before actual planning is their style.

    • NewestType

Technically filing a trademark is not an announcement. But yes, thanks for pointing out the wrong way to do something.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Nothing that wasn’t really talked about before. Moving along…

    • NewestType

      Lol.

  • Ronldbx6

We probably shouldn’t be talking about sequels that are 6 years away ;-p

  • Marco Tinè

I think I’d accept a similar approach only if they plan to have self contained stories at each release. FFXV, for instance, should be the main game and have a complete plot: that would lure me into buying some sequels.

Let me know new heroes with deep characterisation, Square-Enix. Let me roam a fantastical world, enthrall me with a story that has a satisfying ending, then I’ll consider the rest.

  • bloodiOS

If it’s as epic the Ivalice Alliance, I’m sold. But if it’s just some direct sequels in forms of overpriced add-on contents then no, just put a stop to it now.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

As long as the games are good, and hopefully all on major consoles, I don’t mind =)

  • http://www.flavors.me/ericgornicki Eric Gornicki

Since they re-announced the game as FFXV on E3, Nomura stated that they plan to make sequels to the game due the large amount of content they created. Nomura also stated that they plan to release the sequels with a much smaller gap between them, so I think fans don’t have to worry about another 7 years of development to the upcoming sequels. Bring it on the epicness Square-enix!

  • KingGunblader

    GO HOME SQUARE YOU’RE DRUNK.

Seriously, let’s get XV out the door before we start talking about Stella Returns or whatever.

    • Anime10121

Hey I’ll GLADLY take a Stella returns! She looks like an awesome character! :P

      • Imran

        She is a princes.

  • http://www.flavors.me/ericgornicki Eric Gornicki

I agree with a lot of you that simply want FFXV already, instead of announcements of more sequels (considering all the controversy around the XIII’s sequels), but we also have to consider the development time and budget spent to create a game from scratch. These days games are way more complex to develop than before, so it’s not a surprise they’re planning to use the same universe/characters/plot on more than just one game.

  • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

    otomege ;p

now serious.they already stated they are aiming to recreate VII success and surpass it with a new franchise(which is pretty dumb imo, while i didn’t liked VII that much the game is a success of it’s own that can’t get replicated, imho). so ladies and gentlemen, you already need to expect even condoms of XV in the future.

  • KiTA

    Oh for christ’s sake.

  • Ryuukishi

Love how they’re planning sequels for a game that’s been in development for 7 years, before that game is even out. :) I wonder if the XIII universe is finished after Lightning Returns. Personally I’ll take as many more XIII games as I can get.

  • ShadowDivz

    Im guessing paid DLC?
Actually forget about whether it will be paid or not!
Can they actually release the game first BEFORE adding add-ons?

  • Steven Higgins

I wonder, maybe it’s not a sequel. Maybe FFXV is too big a game to fit in a single disc and don’t have time for multiples so they decided to spit the game into multiple releases rather than making a sequel. I think that would be preferable.
