Senran Kagura Burst Coming To North America From Xseed

By Ishaan . August 6, 2013 . 10:45am

As both Marvelous AQL and Xseed have hinted to Siliconera in the past, Senran Kagura Burst is coming to the Nintendo 3DS in North America as a download title.

As detailed in our past reports on the game, Senran Kagura Burst features two games in one—an upgraded version of the original Senran Kagura (titled Skirting Shadows) with gameplay improvements and its story sequel, Senran Kagura Burst (titled Crimson Girls).

Each game allows you to take control of five female ninjas, each with their own special abilities. In between the game’s brawler-like stages, the story is told through a visual novel format. As the ninjas take damage, their clothing will get damaged (and eventually destroyed), too, which is one of the series’ more infamous features.

Xseed say that Senran Kagura Burst will feature Japanese voices with English subtitles. The game is slated for release in North America via the Nintendo eShop in fall 2013. Surprisingly, the game is rated “T” by the ESRB.

  • Erikdayo

Was hoping Senren Kagura on Vita would be the one coming over. The fan service seems like it’d be more fulfilling on the portable with much better graphics. But I’ll make due with the 3DS version. Definitely in!

    • wyrdwad

Bear in mind Senran Kagura (Burst) is technically the start of the story, with Shinovi Versus expecting fans to have prior knowledge of its characters and situations. Though the Vita game does tell a standalone story, you’ll get more out of it if you’ve played the 3DS game previously, as a lot of the Hanzo and Hebijo characters receive all their backstory in Burst. So introducing players to the franchise with Shinovi Versus might have been “jumping the gun” a bit.

They made it easier for the U.S. release. Sorry, I must have edited while you were still typing; I didn’t really feel like beating a dead horse again after some consideration.

        • British_Otaku

I would rather have the horse beaten and some clarity of what was wrong with the localisation, but I suppose making the game easier by default if it goes far enough to make it a worse experience with no options isn’t cool.

          • wyrdwad

See my below response to Strid. We did not make VK3 easier, we simply made grinding less required during the initial sections of the game. The actual enemy difficulty has not been touched, only the cost of beginner items.

          • British_Otaku

I see. That doesn’t sound like a worse experience but a streamlined beginning depending on how the game actually works (never played any of the games).

I may check it out in the future, thanks for the response. I tend to expect localisations to maintain all of the prior elements with maybe more options though.

          • wyrdwad

Yep. As Strid pointed out to us, and we will take that advice to heart for future releases. We should’ve thought of it before, honestly.

        • wyrdwad

If you’re going to hold that against us, at least state our actions accurately. We did not make the game easier, we simply removed the need to grind at the beginning. The actual difficulty level of the enemies is exactly the same.

    • Suicunesol

If not even Ace Attorney could get a physical release, I don’t see how this one could have. Senran Kagura being released in the West at all is already a milestone. Those people should eat it up and not worry that it didn’t come in a special bowl.

  • Nightmare637

wait how did something like this get a “T” rating?

    • Herok♞

its not that bad and it gives me hope the Vita version would get an M rating if anything.

    • British_Otaku

What makes you think that it would be anything else?
I suppose I would expect M till I dial back and think about what is in the game itself. Blood? Nope. (Eroge Tentacle) Sex Scenes? Nope.

Given that they could still go either way based on the rater’s take on the images displayed (girls in swimsuits, some implicit images with food, generally the characters having fun aside from a few in the first game), T isn’t too surprising.

      • Nightmare637

well that’s it isn’t it? your well versed in what the games actually about so you would understand how it got the rating it did.
I’m basing my assumption from what I’ve heard from other people on other sites and well… it doesn’t paint a “rated T game” if you know what I mean.
so yeah It’s basically my fault for not putting any actual research in and blindly. trusting the words and opinions of others.

        • Brandonmkii

IMO its far more tame than the Vita game. Above average fan-service, basically.

        • British_Otaku

Only well versed in the first title, I assume that Senran Kagura Burst (as it is the first title, plus a sequel from the original antagonists side) can’t be too much more even with the 3D locker room. Shinovi Versus may be something else… >_>

It’s not your fault at all, promotion has been highly on the fanservice (BOOBS BUTTS BOOBS BUTTS) but when you are actually fighting enemies in dozens, you don’t really notice it. :P The ESRB has probably rated lots of games M for less.

    • MoriyaMug

hopefully if this does well we get the vita game

        • KuroNathan

that’d be nice, the vita game does look fun too.

      • wat_wat

He’s saying he’ll buy this one so Xseed will localize the Vita game.

I don’t think he has anything to worry about. Xseed has been good with their Vita support, and it makes sense to start with the first game in the series.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Buying as soon as it’s available. Very surprised to see this happen, but it really makes me see the value in the e-shop and digital downloads.

  • Kaitou21

  • SilentMC

Ugh didn’t like the game much when I played it. May only get it for the novelty that I’d never thought it would get localised. Well happy boobs for the world then

    • Renaldi Saputra

      gaming now:
      boobs & asses sell..
      ’nuff said

  • Mozendo

Hey, I know this is a minor complaint, but the lack of an “s” in “Xseed say that Senran Kagura Burst” really bothers me.

    Anywho, thanks for news :3

  • Splinter

Buying on day one. Thank you, XSEED! We hope you bring Shinovi Versus too.

  • Splinter

Buying on day one. Thank you, XSEED! We hope you bring Shinovi Versus too.

  • RovCal

top 5 must have games, in descending order of excitment, when I buy a 3ds:
    1. bravely default
    2. fire emblem
    3. senran kagura
    4. any or all one piece games
    5. pending

    • TheExile285

You should add Kingdom Hearts DDD IMO

Also, I’m guessing your are from EU? The only 2 OP 3ds games that have been localize have only been localized in EU Ane 3DS is region locked…

    • British_Otaku

Do you live in Europe? I feel sorry for any One Piece fan getting a 3DS who doesn’t… :/ >_>

      I’ve got a J3DS too so I’m covered 100% unless a US exclusive one comes up…

      • RovCal

Na I am asian. I will import either the European or US 3ds. right now I have decided to go with us one cause of senran kagura but if it gets announced for Europe I will import from there than cause of the one piece games. and tell me about it I am pissed at these exclusive European one piece releases cuz I wanna import fromUS cause there prices are lower cuz of less tax. but oh well ps3 n vita have one piece so I will bear it.

        • British_Otaku

If you ask me, the best One Piece titles of recent memory (haven’t played much of Pirate Warriors) are from Ganbarion (Gigant Battle 2, Unlimited Cruise SP, Jump Superstars).

Ganbarion developed the Unlimited series which tend to be adventure games in the spirit of One Piece with fishing, mining, bug catching and now multiplayer monster hunting if you have heard of One Piece Unlimited World Red ( ). I like to call them the kings of fanservice given how much content they always stuff into their games even if I can see them going into the DLC/Nickle+Dime route slowly.

They have two limited edition 3DS XL SKU in Japan for that game and a recent trailer… I can’t see it on the net though (Japanese e-Shop and Nintendo Direct only so far).

          • RovCal

I see I see I never played that one… and yes I have heard about red! multi player adventure! now that one piece game will be epic! praying to God that it will get localized

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

This passed with a T rating? That’s surprising.

  • Just Tim

I’ll definitely check this out, seeing how I intend to continue my support for the now-Marvelous AQL/XSEED.

  • Zimmer Remmiz

    Well my life is complete…

  • Logan Moll

Yay, more pervy Japanese stuff. :/

    • Just Tim

At least it’s NOT necrophilia, involving zombies!

    • Renaldi Saputra

      but it’s rated T..

    • MrSirFeatherFang

      pervy? This is completely normal

  • A fool

And one more step in the wrong direction for XSEED… At least they brought TLS before killing themselves.

I guess it’s how the market works nowadays. It’s just sad that every single company now support that kind of BS.

  • Greg

I know who to put my faith in localizations now :D. Hope this game turns out good and sells well.

  • Michael Connell

Well, there goes my SMT4/FE Eshop credit. Figured I’d be using it for the new Phoenix Wright…
Still, awesome news, Xseed, you guys rock!!

  • artfv95

As if I didn’t have enough reasons to love XSEED.

  • Renaldi Saputra

    “T”? you are kidding, right?
except if you censor ALL the PLOT

    • Kevin Tan

Xseed says it is not censored at all.

      • Renaldi Saputra

welp, that would be a problem it seems..
        for a CERO D game

    • Anesia Hunter

The game really isn’t as bad as a lot have claimed. This has been stated a million times before, but it’s like no one ever listens or looks at playthroughs on youtube.

      • Renaldi Saputra

        but that’s a cero D game.. if it’s still cero B or C, then it’s still reasonable..

I’m not saying it bad, only considering the objectionable contents…

        • British_Otaku

At your first comment: Assuming PLOT = boobs as many seem to imply, which should it be rated M? Kids manga, anime and video games if you will count most fighting games go that far, don’t make me mention how easy it is to open The Sun to Page 3 in the UK. Nipples aren’t even visible… If they were? Big deal, Captain Falcon’s nipples are in full view all of the time.

At your second comment: I agree that CERO D, you would think scales to an M. Then look at dozens of other games rated the full range from low to high across regions with censorship on arbitrary means. Rating systems aren’t that stable and this game doesn’t even go that far.

          • Renaldi Saputra

but they’re all having big boobs.. not normal boobs
and about the “torn cloth” thing..

  • GOTY… *cough*

Well, aside from saying my hurrah, I just wonder about the T rating… in that case, the Ikki Tousen game that was on the verge of actually releasing here a few years back could and should have been released. It was canceled simply because they didn’t want to take a risk releasing it as M rated :P Its content wasn’t any different from Senran Kagura’s from the looks of it, maybe even tamer….

Also, I’m far from complaining but I would have loved a physical release… I guess Izuna 2’s awesome release way back when falsely gave me hope for games like this getting the releases they deserve here… lol

  • s07195

How many unexpected localizations have there been this year? :D
Except I’m still finding a way to play English ones…

  • Ethan_Twain

That’s interesting. I would have thought that this would warrant an M rating unless censored, but I know that Xseed is really not a fan of changing original works in the slightest. Maybe the risque nature of the game got exaggerated?

    • Anesia Hunter

Yes, actually, it did get highly exaggerated for SKB. Some playthrough videos were uploaded to youtube before showing some of the game and the fan-service parts are only in certain points of the game.

  • Lester Paredes

YAY! Became interested since i hear of Shinovi Versus for Vita. Will be supporting you on this, XSeed. My 3DS is ready! lol Please, once you’re done with the 3DS, can you bring out Versus on Vita? Pretty please?

  • WhyWai

Noo! I was hoping Vita game is the one going to be localised. Hope they will bring that eventually too.

  • piichan

aside from the characters getting naked, is the gameplay any good? and can you touch em boobies?

    • British_Otaku

The latter is a serious question? Well no, you can look at the characters in any costume getup you arrange and tilt the system to see the physics in play (some characters don’t take very well to this).

The former? Good gameplay? Sure. It’s a solid enough beat em up.

I could say a lot of words, but I’ll leave you with a video:

      • piichan

thanks for the vid. i really haven’t checked the series since i had the impression it was focused more on fanservice than gameplay. i’ll give it a go.

lol, and yes, the 2nd question was a serious one since it would only make sense to have “poke” features with this game, but i guess they focused more on the boobs popping out :p

        • British_Otaku

From what I’ve seen you can directly touch them (well through a the screen, they aren’t real ya know?) on the Vita sequel somewhere. Given that the primary screen is a touch screen, it makes sense, it is likely that characters are awkward when you mess with them there as well.

I played New Love Plus’ demo on the 3DS, I remember it having the camera react if you attempt to take a panty shot… >_>

  • LonelyGamer

Now i can see where my $30 is going to.
