Senran Kagura Burst Hands On: Yes, We Played The English Version

By Spencer . August 7, 2013 . 1:30pm

Xseed announced Senran Kagura Burst yesterday, but Siliconera has known about the news for a while. I actually played the English version, too, and got to experience a portion of the game’s localized text.

Senran Kagura Burst’s localization looks fairly complete and one thing that may surprise you is the game has a lot of story scenes—it was, after all, the producer’s intent to make the game story-focused. The ninjas from Hanzo Academy have playful conversations before missions and the game retains the original Japanese voiceovers.

There are also visual novel-esque story scenes in between missions, which are presented similarly to the short stories in Lost Odyssey. Senran Kagura Burst is considerably more lighthearted, though, and these are like slice of life stories. I read through a story scene that focused on Asuka (she’s the girl on the right wearing a bandanna as a scarf) after a boy that she didn’t know confessed his feelings for her.

The core of Senran Kagura Burst is its beat ’em up missions and each ninja has their own set of moves. I started out with Asuka who uses swords to attack.

Once locked into a combo, you can launch enemies and trap them in an aerial rave. Enemies don’t disappear until they touch the ground, so it’s possible to set up ridiculous juggles. Stages in Senran Kagura Burst take place in something like a box. You can run to left and right a bit since each area is a little bigger than the 3DS’ screen, but the game isn’t like Double Dragon or side scrolling beat ’em ups. Fights can get to be pretty one-sided because your characters gain experience points and level up through missions. Asuka was maxed out in the build I played with powerful moves unlocked and available for use.

Afterwards, I played Katsuragi and fought Yagyu, who uses an umbrella to attack. The small arenas are suited to these boss battles in particular, and as you probably know, Senran Kagura Burst has costume damage as one of its main features.

You can also do a Shinobi Transformation, which shows, as the ESRB would probably mention, deep cleavage. What may surprise you is that there isn’t as much T&A in this particular Senran Kagura game as you might expect. The game is actually rated T for teen. In fact, Senran Kagura Burst and even the Japan-only Vita sequel, Shinovi Versus, aren’t as sexualized as another Marvelous AQL game I played.

Senran Kagura Burst was an expanded release in Japan that contained the original Senran Kagura and a new story with rival characters from Hebijo Academy. Both games have been included in full in the North American release as well, so you’ll be getting the full story here.

Xseed has Senran Kagura Burst slated for release this fall as an eShop download for Nintendo 3DS.

“In fact, Senran Kagura Burst and even the Japan-only Vita sequel, Shinovi Versus, aren’t as sexualized as another Marvelous AQL game I played.”
Which game? You’ve got my curiousity fired up xD

    • Antixono

      Me too I wanna know.

    • I wonder if it was valhalla knights 3?

      • supervamp

Ohh is this the article writer who got angry at vk 3 for having boob slider and the red light district?

        • Eh, what did u mean?

          • supervamp

I remember that the article about the boob sliders in vallhalla knight 3 was really judgey

    • Sacchan

      Fate/Extra CCC?

  • KazukiNanbu

this game is going to be a guilty pleasure to me, i can’t wait

  • DivinePhoenix69

Great writeup. Im really looking forward to this game, the gameplay reminds me of a side scroller Sengoku Basara with some fanservice.

  • KuroNathan

I was under the impression that shinovi vs was laying it hard on the fan service, having done away with the indestructible bikinis of censorship and replaced it with convenient spots of light.

    • leingod

The game’s exactly like that. If it’s not lights, it’s silly portraits of the girls covering their sensitives.

      • KuroNathan

so wait, naked girls covering naked girls… girlsception?

        • leingod

Heh, it’s not naked portraits of them… more like silly cartoony faces of them :P

  • It’s definitely a solid game, but not really one you’ll be shouting about. Not for the gameplay at least. Some publication somewhere will get the ball rolling about the whole sexism thing (again) soon enough.

Shinovi versus is worse when it comes to the fan service though as the clothing destruction is more frequent and more obtrusive. Just watch out for those infinite combos from the enemies in burst!!

    • leingod

Both games don’t take themselves too seriously, and that’s why they’re fun. Overly moralistic people are not fun at all, though.

      • Agreed. It’s just a shame that there seems to be so many of them around. Either that or opportunists who take the chance to grab hits for their publications…

But getting a dress break scene every few seconds in shinovi versus gets pretty annoying after a while, especially while in mid combo.

But getting a dress break scene every few seconds in shinovi versus gets pretty annoying after a while, especially while in mid combo.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

“Xseed announced Senran Kagura Burst yesterday, but Siliconera has known about the news for a while.”

… what, felt the need to sit in the background and laugh amongst yourselves as we bitch and moan about wanting it and Shinovi Versus localized. That’s sick… =(

Anywho, glad to know it’s shaping up well.

    • Some people just want to watch the world burn.

    • Sadly, this actually happens often, and while we’d love to leak all the news all the time, that would also instantly put us on every publisher’s blacklist. Look at the bright side—it’s nowhere near as bad as Monster Hunter. We had to hold that news for nearly a year, and that was actually pretty painful, even for us!

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Oh I totally knew that, I just wanted to bust y’alls chops.

        • Nah, it’s cool… I know you were kidding. MH really was painful, though, because every week people would complain about it in every Capcom post, and there wasn’t a thing we could do.

          • Martian Wong

What monster Hunter news you guys were holding back? Please fill me in~

          • raitouniverse

Probably the fact that it was coming to NA for the Wii U/3DS.

          • Martian Wong

Hmm, maybe they know that Capcom will also release a MH game for Vita, but just cant talk about it ATM…

          • I was talking about MH3U.

          • Barrylocke89

You could chuckle a bit and wait for the bomb to drop. That’s what I’D do at least :P

      • leingod

Guess that’s understandable. I’m cautiously optimistic about Shinovi Versus though, since the guys at XSEED are usually awesome to fans.

      • Aristides

lol I bet you already know about the upcoming Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC localization. DONT YOU?! :P

  • Pyrofrost

If I were to compare the gameplay to anything, I would compare it to some of the IkkiTousen games I’ve played.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Funny, because the people behind this series worked on those Ikki Tousen games.

      • British_Otaku

And the director of Ikki Tousen’s anime directed Senran Kagura’s anime among Shana, Slayers and others. >_>

    • Odin

Senran Kagura is a reskinned Ikki with more story, yes. The green flash juggle mechanic from Tamsoft is all too familiar if you’ve played their PSP games.

    • Lynx

      Same base engine, iirc.
Wouldn’t mind a new IT game with the stuff they’ve learned from this.

  • Can’t wait for this even more now after reading this =^_^=

  • Highasthesky

Playing SV while i wait :D

    • leingod

Let’s hope that one gets localized as well. Got the JPN version but the text just scares me away.

      • ShadowDivz

You could just enjoy the gameplay. But personally i actually would like to know what the characters are saying.

        • leingod

I did for a while, but then a lot of stuff started to happen in the game, lots of character interaction, lots of unlocks, etc… so I started to feel like I was missing too much. Stopped enjoying the game then.

          • ShadowDivz

Understandable, It would feel like your missing out.
They’re talking and your just there like “I DONT UNDERSTAND JAPANESE! PLEASE GIRLS I WANT TO JOIN IN UR SEXY FUN TIMEZ.” or something. xD

          • leingod

Yeah… I mean, they sound so excited there talking and bouncing and all.

          • ShadowDivz

Man i was looking for this post for quite some time.

I just got the game and i wanted to tell you there’s a story translation on gamefaqs

So its there incase you want it. It might be a drag bit of a drag but it’s better than nothing.

I copied all of it to a notepad file and when the characters speak i read the text on my computer. It’s like jap dub eng sub. xD Just letting you know.

            PS:The game is awesome!

          • leingod

I’ll wait for a while, just in case it gets localized… if it doesn’t, I’ll check out that guide :)

          • ShadowDivz

Al right, just letting you know.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

ಠ⌣ಠ did you play? mostly one handed? Spencer? Its fine man Its Normal

    • I have three hands.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        I envy you, sir

      • Enzo

        I would need four. ;)

        • Highasthesky

I see what you did there…

        • Renaldi Saputra

          then you should use omnitrix..
if you know what I mean.. LOL

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Yeah its always funny when people dont think the game is story focused. There’s A LOT of story. You’ll be doing a lot of reading during the main course of the game. More so in Burst than Versus.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      Very big on the *plot*

    • Haseyo

There’s certainly a lot of text, but the story is…average, at most. It wasn’t that interesting imo. The combat is what sells it. You’ll enjoy the game just as much skipping all of the dialog.

      • AkuLord3

Story is still Story even if average~

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

Are you kidding me? The story was great(cliche, but great), as was the character interaction. The gameplay, while fun, is absolutely nothing worth mentioning. If it wasn’t for the story and character interaction, the game wouldn’t be anything special. Of course, fanservice aside.
No clue why you skipped through the dialog but to each his own.

        • Haseyo

Which is my point. It’s a fun game, but nothing special in my opinion. It’s nice if you want to mash your soul out and beat the living hell out of things.

          • FitzpatrickPhillips

You just said the combat is what sells it, which isn’t true, as the combat is nothing special. The character interaction is what sells it – of which you skipped for w/e reason.
And the fanservice too of course.

          • Haseyo

Perhaps I overgeneralized. It’s what sold me, is what I meant to say. I give it a 7.5/10. I recommend it, but only if you don’t mind sacrificing your Y button. It won’t break, but you will notice it being a bit softer after prolonged play. If you want to beat the hell out of things with some teenage ninja chicks with hilarious boob physics, then this is the game for you. No one is looking at this game and thinking “Gee, the story looks wonderful here!”

            They see action and tits.

          • FitzpatrickPhillips

I’m not talking about how people see it.

          • Haseyo

Then we are on two different wavelengths~

I have no idea why people are rating us down so much. Was a healthy conversation if you ask me D:

          • FitzpatrickPhillips

Hah. Downvotes happen for no reason

          • Anesia Hunter

nope. they happen when people don’t like the comment.

  • Jonathan Tse

pretty happy the game is getting an international release, i’ve heard great things about the combat.

  • leingod

I will totally download and play this for the story.

  • “Story”

  • Suicunesol

“Whew,” Spencer wiped the sweat from his brow as he finalized and published the Senran Kagura Burst play test article. “Now I can finally take a break and play some more of that english-translated Shinovi Versus I got from Xseed yesterday…”

  • SlickRoach

Seeing the controversy of Dragon’s Crown because of characters like the Sorceress and the Amazon I wonder if this game will rustle jimmies when it hits the West. I mean it does feature girls getting their clothes ripped off and from what I hear it won’t be censored, right?

    • Barrylocke89

I can see it getting a few feathers ruffled, but Xseed’s usually been low key on their public advertising and hype. A few articles on niche game sites like this, a post on the Playstation Blog. Nothing major.

Dragon’s Crown may have been the biggest game that Atlus has hyped since Persona 4 Golden and Persona 4 Arena (MAYBE SMTIV matches it).

I can see that making a difference in terms of what people say. Things on handhelds seem to have an odd way of flying under the radar anyways in the West compared to console releases.

    • AndyLC

Senran Kagura’s creator doesn’t give a shit, he just wants to wrap the world in HAPPY BOOBS

  • Will John

I’m hoping that you guys are also holding onto news of another certain Marvelous games localization that a lot of people have been begging for in the US and have even started a petition for that rhymes with Mate Spectra BBB

    • brian

I think that’d probably go to Aksys at this point.

  • Göran Isacson

Huh. I’m kinda curious now that I’ve read about these “box-worlds”: how exciting are the regular enemy battles? Do you eventually become so overpowered that you can easily win them all by button mashing? And if so, does the game try to compensate by throwing huge numbers of enemies at you in an attempt to pad it all out, instead of creating intelligent and/or exciting enemies to fight? Because oh man, are those ever my biggest brawler peeves.

    • MoriyaMug

A little of column A, a little of column B. There’s not MUCH strategy involved, but the Life on the Line technique (basically, shed clothes at the start of a mission for massive speed/damage increase and a major penalty to defense) helps to shake things up. You get a special ranking for completing missions in this fashion, and supposedly something super-special is unlocked if you can do them all (which ain’t easy).

      • Göran Isacson

I see, so like a “challenge run” option then? That could be interesting, provided the core gameplay is interesting enough that ou WOULD want to challenge yourself…

  • Junko Enoshima

    I SO want this game.

  • Zimmer Remmiz

Can’t wait, It’ll be fun playing the games and actually being able to read the dialogue…

  • It’s eshop only right?

  • Alestaos

No word then about a physical release?. If anybody knows what is the memory card for the 3DS is it the same as the PSP/Vita ones my local GAME didnt know either

    • Haseyo

3DS uses standard SD cards, so you can get a 16 / 32 GB SD card for a cheap price and it’ll work just fine. This game’s DL size is pretty big.

      • Alestaos

        Thank you :)

  • AndyLC

Senran Kagura is a game made with the most pure of intentions

    • Ferofax

This guy should be World President.

  • Bigabu Beaze

Spence since you can see into the future does Metal Max 4 or Medabot DUAL will be localized? Or EX Troopers?

  • No No NO!!! I want Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus localized.

    • Nameless App 1989

Remember Unchained Blades? XSEED said that the chances of the sequel coming to America depends on the sales of the first game.

If enough of these games sell, maybe they’ll consider localizng SV.

      • That’s lame but it is also business. But Unchained Blades was on PSP aka a dying system because all of the hacker hacking them. The Ps Vita is new and in need of full games like this over here not all these Minis and very lame Indie games they are trying to push on us.

    • Kamakuma

Just be patient and buy this one then when the sequel is released rejoice in all the Vita goodness.

But really this should be fun anyhow. :’3

  • Nameless App 1989

    Is Suzune an unlockable character?

    • MoriyaMug

No. Unlockables consist solely of Rin and Daidouji.

  • dahuuuundge

was there an DLC for the 3DS version? I remember Shinovi Versus getting tons of costume DLCs

    • British_Otaku

None. I loved that about the Senran Kagura games that up till the Vita game they were fully featured and complete from the get go.

I’ll probably shut up and buy the characters/costumes I may have enjoyed in the prior games if I like SV though.

  • Mar Mar

“Senran Kagura Burst’s localization looks fairly complete”

So that means they are already localizing another project, behind the scenes :P

  • Christopher Nunes

Do we have an exact date for the game’s release aside from next month? Or Fall.

I like to know so I can save up my money immediately for it.

  • Can has for Europe now please?

  • Renaldi Saputra

for a CERO D game? hmm I still wonder..
maybe they shouldn’t rated it CERO D then..

or maybe for Nintendo games, CERO D games aren’t as sexualized as Sony’s CERO D games…

  • Zoozbuh

Soooo… will there be a bit of backstory to fill new players in on the characters/previous storyline? This looks like something I might enjoy, but I’ve never really heard of this series before now. Oh well, about 3 Layton games and an Ace Attorney game still on my future play-list, so I’m good for now!

    • British_Otaku

Burst is both the first 3DS Senran Kagura with upgrades to match the sequel AND the second Senran Kagura. So if you start here, you will get all of the backstory on the character up till the Vita sequel/spinoff which features 22 characters (not sure if they will be as fleshed out but whatever, more than the 12 here).

If you haven’t heard of the series before, here is a review of Burst:

Here is a review of Shinovi Versus on the Vita:

The franchise has expanded to manga adaptations and an anime, but as with most franchises, the core experience is probably the best one. Even if people will be posting fanservice gifs from the show.

      • just for you my good sir for know what very little do.

      • Zoozbuh

        Lol, thanks!

  • Sardorim

Siiiigh… This game doesn’t have a hot tomboy with a moderately sized chest and abs of steel.

Mikasa from Attack on Titan has spoiled me.

  • $7573679

There never is any love for the Vita is there? :(

  • wahyudil

what!!! this is indeed a great news … after I’ve bought a 3DS, this will be my next game …
