No, That Isn’t Pikachu – It’s A Brand New Pokémon In Pokémon X/Y

By Ishaan . August 9, 2013 . 9:20am

As reported this week, Mega Evolutions are a new feature in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. These let certain Pokémon temporarily transform into their Mega forms mid-battle, which gives them enhanced stats or abilities. Here’s a look at some of the Mega Pokémon you’ll be seeing in the games:

Mega Blaziken: (Special distribution Torchic required)

Mega Lucario:

Mega Mewtwo:

In Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, t  he Gym Leader of Shalour City, Korrina, is the key to understanding Mega Evolution. Korrina strives to reach greater heights with her Pokémon, and is seems to be connected to the Mega Evolution concept somehow. In addition to being a Gym Leader, she’s also a great roller skater.

Finally, in addition to the Mega Evolutions, The Pokémon Company also revealed a few brand new Pokémon this morning. Take a closer look at them below:

By emitting radio waves from its antenna-shaped whiskers, new Electric- and Fairy-type Pokémon Dedenne can communicate with far-off allies. It can also plug its tail into outlets to drain electricity from them. Its Ability,Cheek Pouch, is new to Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. If a Pokémon with this Ability eats a Berry during battle, it will not only reap the benefit from the Berry, but the Pokémon will also be able to regain HP. Dedenne can learn the new Electric-type move Nuzzle, which looks cute as the user nuzzles up to a target with its cheeks fully charged, but it’s quite dangerous! Nuzzle will do damage while paralyzing the opponent.

Bunnelby is a new Normal-type Pokémon that creates its den by digging in the ground with its large, shovel-shaped ears. These powerful ears are strong enough to chop right through thick tree roots, making them a force to be reckoned with in battle. Bunnelby can learn the Ground-type move Dig. On the first turn, the user burrows underground, and on the second turn, it attacks! In Double Battles, a Pokémon can use Dig to avoid its ally’s attack and then dish out damage on the next turn.

It is now known that Skiddo evolves into the already announced Gogoat. A Grass-type Pokémon, Skiddo has a gentle nature and is said to be the first Pokémon to live alongside humans. Because of this relationship, Skiddo doesn’t mind carrying people or supplies on its back, and it has become able to read the feelings of its riders through their grip on its horns. Skiddo can learn the Grass-type move Leaf Blade, where the user wields a sharp leaf to slice like a sword.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y will be available worldwide on October 12th.

It is just a Pikachu with rounded ears…

AND I WANTS IT SO BADLY WHY!!??? 0[]0//

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Looks like that thing from Benten

  • Jontaku

    Kick arse.

  • SlickRoach

I also suspected Cheek Pouch to be an ability that lets a Pokémon hold two items at once by storing them in their cheeks but that would be pretty OP competitively. And Bunnelby looks so awesome, I want to know what it’s evolution will look like!

  • Man that’s a goofy looking rabbit… Anyway Dedenne is like a electric marill, and they both part fairy.

    • neocatzon

Dat bunny: “What’s up doc?” and Dedenne looks like a chubby hamster instead mouse.

      • Yeah, Bunnelby does remind me of that really old Bugs when he first started

  • porkiewpyne

    Must. Resist. Temptation.

    Must. Not. Hug. Dedenne.

    Worth! :3

  • dedenne looks like pikachu and marills illegitimate child
    so adorable
i cant stop laughing at bunnelby it really looks like it has no idea where it is or whats going or even what its doing

    • Jonah Paley

      Pikablu is real?!

    • Rytan

I was thinking more along the lines of Raichu and Marill.

    • DFM

Slap a hamster and a Pikachu together & you get Dedenne. Seriously, Cheek Pouch and Nuzzle?

  • KuroNathan

Step aside pikachu, I think you just got usurped.

  • O_O Master Clueless

hope you can still use a bike for travel hate catching pointless pokemon I’m not gonna lvl(gogoat) it erks my soul when i have to that for pokemon that have to surf and what not.

    • JoJo_649

Latest trailer showed a bike, I wanted the roller skates to be true however, :/

      • Suicunesol

        Huh? There are roller skates.

        • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

The Gym leader is wearing them, and I don’t think you can grind rails in shoes.

          • Suicunesol

Main character was using rollerskates in X&Y’s first video footage. It’s not like you can’t use both a bike and rollerskates. Heck, maybe the gym leader gives them to you.

          • JoJo_649

Maybe they’re the replacement for the running shoes.

          • Symbol de Au

I think that’s possible since it seems like you get them before/in the town with the first gym leader.

          • sd28

the new trailer shows the character grinding on rails in the gym leader portion

          • Suicunesol

Thanks, was looking for more footage but forgot about that.

          • O_O Master Clueless

lol when i first seen this trailer i misunderstood bond for wands was like wth change pokeballs to pokewands O_o…

  • Malon

    Cuteness overload

  • Hayato

Wait a minute… is Skiddo jumping UP a ledge?!

    • Detrimont

yes, you can do that now(the official site confirms it)

    • Wow, good catch!

    • Bacon_n_Lettuce

First diagonal movement, now jumping up ledges… what’s next, being able to land anywhere when flying?

Either way, route designs are definitely going to get more interesting.

      • Notquitesure?

R u serious didn’t know we would be able to move diagonally, and can’t wait to go ‘fuck you little ledges.’ This is awesome :)

  • Renaldi Saputra

    that bunny can learn dig??

welp, then it’s confirmed that this is WABBIT SEASON

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

he’ll probably be making trips to Albuquerque…that was a tough one.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro
  • J_Joestar

Dedenne is alright, still got nothing on Emolga

    • ronin4life

My Emolga kicked ass. It had static as its ability and I gave her a Spiky helm… so everytime an enemy touched her they risked paralysis and self inflicted damage. On top of that, she was super fast and had high damage capability… and being electric/flying she was immune to ground attack…
      Best. Pokemon. Evah(maybe)

  • WANT!

  • riceisnice

They should have gone with something more Latin like Magna Lucario but I guess anything will still sound like it’s tacked on. Best to keep it simple.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      They were calling Mewtwo Awakened.

      They shoulda gone with Awakened.

I swear to god this localization team keeps finding ways to IRK me.

  • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

I’ve seen people complaining about how similar Dedenne is to Pikachu, but if Pokemon are like real like animals, it only makes sense to have Pokemon with similarities. After all, there are an indeterminable amount of animals with new ones constantly being discovered every year.

Oh, gods. Millions of Pokemon. Just trying to collect them all … that’s a deadly quest.

  • Ethan_Twain

How do you folks feel about this “Mega Pokemon” concept? I’m not certain I’m on board. It reminds me of myself a decade ago when I was a little kid enthralled with Digimon… until the first season ended and there were some in between season specials or movies or something, and all of a sudden there were a ton of new digimon forms. Then I realized that the formula was always gonna be “New bad guy can’t be beaten, then they think up a new digimon power level, then that’s awesome until the NEXT bad guy. The same digimon is never going to be enough for two bad guys in a row.”

At the time I didn’t know about power creep as a concept or even realize consciously what I was doing, but that was the first time I think I ever decided that something I loved wasn’t cool anymore and that I liked it better the old way.

Now pokemon has always been a lot more measured than that, and I certainly don’t expect the cycle I described above to be fully applicable but… man, this kinda takes me back and not really in such a good way.

    • Suicunesol

But it’s okay if Mega is the final level, right? :)

      • Ethan_Twain

If Mega is widely accepted and popular, do you REALLY think that it will be the final level?

        • Suicunesol

I should hope so. There would be over 1000 Pokemon by the time they’d consider introducing another level of power. It’d be too complicated. Too many models. Too many Pokemon to consider upgrades for. I’m not even sure every final stage Pokemon is even getting one at the current time. I think Mega might become more refined in the next generation, or something. But I don’t want them to introduce another “level” of power either. And I’m going to assume that they won’t until proven otherwise.
If they ever want to increase Pokemon power, they can do it some other way. Revamping hold items, for instance, into equippable items. Some cool-looking armor, maybe. But even that makes things a bit too complicated. They need to retain some level of the basic Pokemon battle simplicity which is why these forms are temporary battle power-ups, like a super suit for when the going gets tough. I just hope enemy trainers also use Megaforms to keep the game challenging.

I also don’t think Megaforms are as OP as everyone thinks they are. They take up the Pokemon’s item slot, increase some stats, change the ability, maybe a type change. A lot of older Pokemon have lost relevance in recent games, and if Megaforms are created for them, it should make them powerful enough to compete with the likes of Garchomp, Chandelure, and many legendary Pokemon. But it shouldn’t make them OP. As long as we don’t see too many MegaLucario’s or MegaBlazikens.

Maybe, in the far off future, they’ll introduce alternate Mega forms for Pokemon, God forbid. But, well, at this point in time I’ll appreciate and enjoy the Mega forms as they are.

          • Bur

I think it might be time for a Pokemon mass extinction event. Pokemon: Apocalypse.

          • s07195

            The Pokalypse. XD

    • Slayven19

But see that’s the thing, while they are doing pokemon games for the old fans that grew up with red blue they are doing this for new fans as well. Power creep works on the newer generation the same way it worked on us as a kid.

      • Ethan_Twain

It didn’t work on me as a kid. I bailed on Digimon two episodes into season 2 and never went back. It wasn’t until I found this website that I discovered “Hey, wait. Digimon still exists? And there were like SIX SEASONS? Weird.”

    • PreyMantis

This whole transforming monsters in battles had been done before; it’s not new. It’s just that there’s more now than before. I also don’t think this is gonna be that bad.

      • Nanaki

Exactly. People are even aware of this, but the fact that this can now be compared to “Digivolving” and “Super Saiyans” bothers them for some reason. They feel betrayed for lack of originality? I don’t know, but it’s a little ridiculous to me.

    • Nanaki

I’m perfectly fine with mega evolution. Considering it is not a permanent evolution I don’t see it as such and I don’t consider it to be the “fourth level”. It’s a little saddening to see some of fan base react to a change that’s really already occurred within the series, albeit they were called formes.

      • Ethan_Twain

Oh, it’s a temporary transformation? So it’s more like an item you use on a creature to get improved performance out of it for a limited period of time? Like Pokemon steroids?

Because that actually sounds fine to me :)

        • Symbol de Au

Yeah it is, and the official website says there are other requirements besides just holding the item. It could be that they have to raise a certain stat during battle or be at 50% hp or something.

  • konsama

That looks looks like pikachu’s breeding gone wrong. And one more to the electric rodents…

    Lucario looks so baws tho.

  • Ah~ Pokémon-themed fashion is always fun to look at. Korrina’s motif looks like a fox or something. The symbol behind her looks like a boxing glove, so… a Shiny Mienshao?

  • MrRobbyM

  • Cyrus

Long flowing hair = more power

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Beware of the Aizen Butterflies

    • ronin4life

      Works for the sayins.
      Just sayin’…

      • Syn

Dont you mean, just “Saiyan” :P

  • 3PointDecoupage

When did Pikachu bang Hamtaro? I kinda like it though.

  • Slayven19

I can’t stop laughing at that rabbit. Bunnelby looks to goofy lol.

Also, is it okay to call Blaziken “Mega Ultra Chicken” now…or should we wait to see if there’s an “Ultra” evolution… :^)

    • Symbol de Au

No one is going to get that.

  • Grape Monet

    I want a Dedenne plushie!

  • Just Tim

Dedenne has Marill’s ears and Raichu’s body.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

No 3D model of Sheep dragon? Thats unfabulous

    • Suicunesol

You can see some in the CoroCoro pictures. :D

    • Göran Isacson

Fabio electric sheep is best sheep.

    • beat

I love how in its Mega-evolution, it grows fur/wool again. If I remember correctly, its pre-evos are sheep that have wool on them but when it reaches the final stage it loses all of it. I think Ampharos’ mega evolve design is incredible.

  • Hau To

Pikachu makeover is fabulous. Will it evolve into Raichu?

  • Hours

Dedenne is the result of years of Pokémon cuteness research. It has finally reached it’s zenith! :D

  • Jesse Torres

Dedenne looks like a baby raichu.

  • Dedenne’s bio will probably mention something like a “belongs to the family of electric mouse Pokemon.”

  • DCBlackbird

bunnelby and dedenne the throwback pokemon

  • artemisthemp

    Megalucario YES YES YES

  • Brutal2D

Skiddo is all I need, it’s the only new pokemon I care for.

If that’s not right enough for you, riding on a goat as a mighty stead…

I don’t want to be right.

  • Masengan

Bunnelby (new early mammal?) looks so blah and I have a feeling it will evolve into a weird normal ground type. The new rodent is waaaay too cute.

    • AndyLC

I enjoy the ‘blah’ though, he’s a successor to the Bibarel tradition.

  • prometheus126

Are you kidding me? Dedenne is simply a small, chubbier Pikachu with whiskers, what the hell!?

    • beat

Let’s just hope it has an evolution unlike Pluslce, Minun, Pachirisu and Emolga (Pika look a likes)

      • AndyLC

Maybe he evolves into Raichu, hahah.

    • The ears make me think this was a cross breed between a Pikachu and an Emolga. lol

  • Fango

They are running out of ideas for new pokemon already, huh?

    • AndyLC

Wait… did you not know Plustle, Minun, Pachirisu, and Emolga already existed as “resembles Pikachu” Pokemon?

  • AndyLC

    • AndyLC

also known as team “I hope you aren’t rock/ground type”

  • s07195

  • Steven Higgins

I sort of wish Dedenne was actually Mega Pikachu. That’s Mega Pikachu, not Mega Raichu, it would give players more of a reason to think weather it would be better to evolve Pikachu or let him stay as he is and get a Mega Evolution. Then they could have done the same for other Stone evolution Pokemon.

Plus, to me Dedenne almost looks like a Pikachu that got stuck halfway through evolution, although I also see the Raichu/Marril Hybrid in there

But then they’d want to have Ash’s Pikachu access that power in the next season. Fans may not like that.
