imageMages is bringing Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds to PlayStation Vita. Even with little marketing, the Xbox Live Arcade beat ’em up has been a successful project for Mages and the game had a longer half-life than expected. An additional mode and a new guest character will be made for Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds. The additional content will be released as DLC for the Xbox 360 version.

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is slated for release this winter. Want to know how Mages makes 2D beat ’em ups? Read what producer Masaki Sakurai had to say about developing the game.

  • sherimae1324

sweet ^_^ a 360 game crossing over to vita, nice ^_^

  • leingod

I would’ve preferred if it was the fighting game, but hey.

  • d19xx

Nice! I’ve always wanted to try this one. I hope other XBLA gems also gets ported.

  • benhofb

YES!!! I have wanted to play this since it was announced for 36, but since I don’t have on, this is perfect! I can’t wait to play this someday! (God, I can’t wait for a little pixel Kurisu on my Vita!).

  • Katboy

nice..more games for the Vita, the better…so..what’s the game about ?

    • It’s essentially a throwback to 90’s style arcade beat’em’up with some hefty mechanics and adorable chibi art thrown in. Phantom Breaker was originally a 1 vs 1 Xbox 360 and PS3 fighting game developed and published by 5pb. However Battle Grounds only made it’s d├ębut on the Xbox 360, so this is a rather rare sight for the Vita.

The original Xbox 360 version of Battle Grounds featured Kurisu of Steins;Gate as a guest character – she originally was a guest character in the main game too.

The original Phantom Breaker was not released on PS3. The updated version arriving in September will be.

        • Ah my bad, thanks for the correction!

  • Awesome! I think it will suit the portable platform very well. It’s length is nice, and you can just mash away for fun while out and about.

Having played the original, I must agree with the game deserving its success, however I WOULD appreciate a harder difficulty. For a game to come originally from JP, I felt it was awfully easy, even for us western audiences.

(then again many of us might have grew up with the likes of Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and the likes, only to carry over those rather aged skills? :D)

  • Ava1on

Is this for the West or just Japan?

    • ronin4life

      I must know as well…

I was interested in this, but didn’t enjoy the thought of buying off XBLA since I don’t game on it often… plus, making a game portable greatly increases my interest.

Um…Would somebody mind telling me what this new mode and character is? I would click the link, but it’s Famitsu, and I can’t read Japanese.

    • Curan_Altea

Makise Kurisu from Steins Gate (excited about that one) and I don’t think they actually specified the mode being added.

      • Tyler Beale

        Kurisu is already DLC…

        • Curan_Altea

Shows how much I know about this game
the article didn’t specify anything just announced new stuff is coming.

  • God, I hope this comes over to Europe! Even better with ad hoc and online multiplayer!!

  • Aristides

Yes! I hope they release it in the west too! A definite buy for me ^__^

  • XiaomuArisu

    My Vita is ready!

  • KuroNathan

Oooh! yes please! I played this on my friend’s xbox and for a short while I regretted picking the ps3 over xbox

  • ninjabart122

half-life is the last thing I’d think of using as an alternate way of saying playability and lasting appeal.

It’s too bad this wasn’t released on PC or PS3 since I don’t own the Xbox 360 or the Vita.

  • Strid

    Glad I waited.
