Last weekend, Arc System Works held a location test event for Guilty Gear Xrd –SIGN-, at one of Sega’s arcades in Akihabara and fans got a first chance to play the next game in the series. Famitsu reports on the latest information revealed at the event, along with some notes on the Q&A session by series creator Daisuke Ishiwatari and planner known as “Pachi”.

When asked what kind of game will Guilty Gear Xrd be, Ishiwatari says that it will be a fresh start to the series that started in 1998 for the PlayStation. The series creator also adds that it will be a fighting title aimed to getting as many people to play as possible, as their main production focus is to focus on starting from the beginning.

The demo version that was available at the event featured seven characters; Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske, Millia Rage, Potemkin, Chipp Zanuff, May, and Venom. The reason Arc System Works went with these seven is simply because they’re the first ones to be created and have been developed enough to be used in action.

Ishiwatari says there will be plenty more characters, but when he was asked about whether there will be any new characters, he replied by teasing “I wonder? (laughs)”.

According to Pachi, the key point of Guilty Gear Xrd’s system is the Roman Cancel. “We’d like to make the ‘Roman Cancel’ even more enjoyable. This time, you’ll be able to use Roman Cancels at any time during attacks, on top of being able to slow down movements of everything apart from yourself. We’re still on the testing stage for this feature, so I hope the players from the location test will experiment with it.” says Pachi.

You can check out further details regarding the Roman Cancel in our earlier report.

Pachi also added that another key focus is the game’s responsiveness, as they’ve made the switch from CRT monitors used in the past installments to LCD screens. They are currently making adjustments to make sure there aren’t any incongruities from the switch.

Ishiwatari and Pachi also shared concept ideas regarding some of the characters and how they will be different in Guilty Gear Xrd.

Sol will be a character who players can go wild with by using special attacks. Ky will get a new ability called “Grinder,” in addition to having  more powered-up “Stun Edge” attacks.

Above is a look at May’s introduction clip. According to Ishiwatari, she’ll be a “catchy” character, and also more acrobatic than before. Chipp will be getting more ninja-like moves, such as having the ability to stick to walls while attacking.

Millia has always been a speed-based character, so Arc System Works plan on giving her new attacks that furhter utilizes her speed.

Additionally, there will also be button configurations that match the set-up of BlazBlue and Persona 4: Arena made for fans of Arc System Works’ other series.

Finally, Daisuke Ishiwatari and Pachi share a message for the fans:

Pachi: “This game is made with the thoughts of the player’s generation in mind. We’ll be making a new Guilty Gear, and thank you for your continued support.”

Ishiwatari: “I’d like to make it to where both fans of the past series and new players can play while sharing the same perspective. Furthermore, I’d love to hear about the impressions from those who got a chance to play the game. Thank you for your continued support.”

Guilty Gear Xrd –SIGN- is currently in development, and is being considered for next generation consoles.

Having seen some of the gameplay vids, it’s just amazing to see how they managed to keep that classic guilty gear look and feel to it while still being a 3D engine. The camera pivot on the KOs is also very sexy. Here’s hoping Bacon and ABA are put in.

    • LuciferD666

LOL Bacon is what I used to call her as well. You just brought back memories with that typo.Your not the only one hoping for A.B.A..I’m also hoping for Anji. If Bacon’s in.It’ll get my hopes up for Anji being in.But sadly I don’t see why they’d have a reason for A.B.A.We’ll see.

    • Shane Guidaboni

I don’t see why Baiken or ABA wouldn’t be in this game, especially Baiken.

      • Richard N

Bacon has good odds just because she crosses paths with Anji who has Zessen so much as well as being one of the last japanese folk, so she has a lot going on for her plot wise. While A.B.A is there being weird with her key buddy. It’d be nice to have her back just because her mechanics were so interesting, but eh… we’ll see….

      • Setsu Oh

i learned recently baiken was in the first one. RECENTLY. and i played it ON RELEASE.

        i am still baffled.

  • Kaitsu

I’m still in love with Milia Rage’s new outfit.

    • Crimson_Cloud

      That alluring pose!
Also, I hope they make a story mode like the one from BlazBlue. That would flesh out each character’s personality.

    • Setsu Oh

she looks more fleshed out also.

  • Pdugna

Sweet he said Chipp could stick to walls that will make for some awesome combos if used right.

  • $61526767

I look forward to seeing the videos soon. And see more newer characters. Already in love with this game. But still do find Ky weird with that pony tail. Oh well, cannot wait! ^^

  • xAKUM3TSUx

I hope all the previous cast get announced along with some new ones, that way everyone’ll be happy! All the changes to the game sound (and look) awesome and it’s cool that the game runs so fresh and fluidly, all while retaining the same ol’ GG feel. Doing that alone deserves recognition.

Now I’d just like to know how much the “Old Testament” is different from the “New Testament”…if you get my drift heheh

    • Zeik56

If this really is supposed to be a “fresh start” I can’t imagine they’d bring everyone back at once. Rebalancing all those characters with new movesets along with new characters as well would be a herculean task, if they want to do it properly. Hopefully we’ll see most of them at least though.

Pachi’s closing remarks give me hope for the human race.

  • Sango

    Underrated series.

Edit: I don’t now where people keep getting this notion that underrated means that a game can be tied to being bad or that people haven’t played it. Yes gulity gear is in fact an underrated series compared to fighters like smash bros, street fighters, tekken soul caliber etc. In no way shape or form does underrated mean its a bad game or that people don’t like it by my standards.

    • Fidelis

Definitely not underrated..just doesn’t get as much attention. I’ve never heard or read anybody say that they don’t like Guilty Gear

      • Sango

“doesn’t get as much attention” correlates with being underrated.

        • Vosetri

The reason alot of people don’t play is because it’s intimidating, or too old. It is definitely unpopular, but it isn’t underrated by any one that actually knows what they are talking about.

        • Zeik56

That’s more underappreciated than underrated. Underrated implies that there are more people that specifically dislike the game than you believe it deserves, not that they’ve never touched it or know nothing about it.

          • Sango

Underrated impliess that something or someone be can underappreciated or doesn’t receive as much of attention. Why do people keep jumping around? Its not underrated simply because I say it is, its factual that in recent yrs compared to other fighters gulity gear is barely mentioned at all.

    • RichyGaming

Imagine if it wasn’t. For a game that isn’t so mainstream, a lot of hype comes out loud in commentary tournaments from the audience.

      • Tee Niitris

Tournament players love Guilty Gear (or at least now they do). When it first came to the scene, many people hated it because it was different.

It’s fun to watch, fun to play, blistering fast, yet still well made. Only (2D) fighters from that period that rival it are MvC2 and CvS2 (KoF ’02 as well for the scene outside of the U.S.).

        • RichyGaming

I never played any of those games, except UMvC3 and Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus for psp. I might get GGAC+R for console since I like what I see.

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 水木

    KYYYAAHHH

  • Fidelis

Hmm..I wonder if characters from Overture would be considered “new characters”

    I’d really like seeing Izuna

    • Brion Valkerion

I think Sin would be an obvious choice, but would love Dr. Paradigm myself. Hopefully they pull characters from that, even if completely new ones would be great, I’d like to see them.

      • Daniel

I wonder Valentine will be back also…Because at the end of Overture, That Man informed Raven that there’s 1000 or so Valentine being created.

    • xAKUM3TSUx

Sin and Raven would be awesome!!!

    • Arcana Wiz

I want to play with Sin…. Sol it’s too badass and Ky to stiff for my tastes, so i wanna the half term.
And i like the design of valentine too.

  • MrRobbyM

Of course there will be new characters.

  • Daniel

It’ll surely be a fresh start to kick start the fighting game series, that being said since they released +R in vita, I’m hoping that Xrd would have its own release on vita in the near future. (Though I still have a hint of doubt…..;;; )

    • RichyGaming

According to “Taking Venom And Ky For A Spin In Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN”, it’s being considered for PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation Vita, Wii U, and 3DS. No saying for PSP nor PC though.

      • Daniel

I guess Japanese gamers don’t play their games much on the PC…Not to sound ignorant or anything, some people were hoping for a pc copy.

        • RichyGaming

Nah that ain’t ignorance, just wishful thinking :/ There are other fighting games people want for PC but didn’t make it. I never played fighting games on PC though because it looks complicated (unless you guys just connect a controller lol) and my computer is slightly slow so i’m afraid of buying a game, just to have it lag 24/7.

          • Daniel

As a Vita owner, I would like to see this game on Vita…

          • Slayven19

This is still the same people who port their games to every system at least once. I don’t think we have anything to worry about their especially for handhelds.

          • RichyGaming

Same here, I play on my vita more than on my PS3, Xbox, and PC xD

  • Michael Connell

I wonder if there’s going to be a recap story bit in story mode like in Continuum Shift Extend

    • Brandonmkii

Sounds like it could be a straight-up reboot.

      • xAKUM3TSUx

Guilty Gear Xrd’s story takes place after the events of Guilty Gear 2. I’m thinking the new engine and style gives the gameplay the feeling of a fresh reboot- since every GG in the X series have mostly looked the same. Well that’s my opinion on it anyway.

        • Arcana Wiz

yes i read in the wikia that somewhere is written the date of the scene with ky and sol, one year after guilty gear 2, so i think it’s a sequel.

        • RitterKarll17

If its the sequel of guilty gear 2 that means may didn’t even grow?

    • Arcana Wiz

I think that maybe it will, and the guilty gear series are from the time when the games didn’t focused in the story, cause 90% of the story of a game was tossed of in a sequel, so the story isn’t so complicated, Just some points, and the rest in character profiles.

  • vileBrenman

I wonder if Zappa will appear and if so i wonder of they redesigned him

    • Miss_Madness

That sounds amazing and yet horrifying

  • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

Sad i dont Eddie anywhere, im worried. Dizzy too.

    • Daniel

Eddie was seen in the trailer, he’ll be making a return, hopefully all characters will. (With the exception of I-No.)

      • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

Hey i love ms Fanservice, would be sad not to see her, i forgot he appeared in one trailer.

        • Daniel

I’m pretty sure she’ll be back, with less cleaveage (I presume) and hopefully along with her son: Sin. Which means the whole family will be in it.

    • Miss_Madness

      Why worry about Dizzy?

      • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

She married Ky and so i suppose she kinda will be sent to the backlines like in Overture (Considering its her of course)

        • RichyGaming

Whoa whoa when did they get married?

          • Daniel

No, no….They weren’t actually “married” per say, it’s just that, in Dizzy path 1 story ending in AC+, Johnny asked her how things are going with her and Ky, and Dizzy replied by saying: “Oh, you mean him checking up for my body?” (In order to hide her wings and her tail) And says that he needs to look into it more.
And remember, she starts to have feelings for Ky, so she “offered” her body to Ky and therefore Sin was born.

          • RichyGaming

Ohh that’s cool, I thought Ky thought of Dizzy as a monster from what I’ve seen.I only finished Sol’s and a little bit of Ky’s story mode so far. But that’s nice, I figured Ky was kinda bad since he would follow orders 24/7 from what I’ve seen but it seems he’s pretty sick :)

          • Daniel

If you played Overture, you’ll hear Ky say: “Sin is…our child…A child born from our love.” So, they’re not really husband and wife yet…They really loved each other.

There’s also a spectulation that Sol might be Dizzy’s father because of in one guilty gear games, he saves her from her power outbursts…And cares for her in some way.

          • RichyGaming

I’m completely new to GG but I know Sol is trying to get rid of all the Gears, which counts for Dizzy. But he lets her live when he stops her power outburst like you say.
            .
And I guess Sol could be her father. I mean, in the first game I think, he mentions that he’s the prototype of all gears, so that’d make him the father of the whole gear family right?

          • Daniel

And you have to remember, Sol was in love with Justice before they transformed into Gears, now Justice being the mother of Dizzy, it is likely to believe Sol maybe her Father. Justice might have beared a child with him before their transformation.

          • RichyGaming

o.o I wasn’t even aware that Justice was female LOL! Especially that they had a connection before they were transformed.
And I have to disagree with what you said about Dizzy. I mean, don’t you think she would have already mentioned something if that were the case?
I do agree that he could be her father. But I don’t think she’s even aware of who the prototype gear is. But that’s a sad story, about Sol, Justice, and Dizzy.

          • Daniel

Go to the guilty gear wikia page to learn more if you are curious, it’s only a speculation. But, Justice IS Dizzy’s mother. It’s only speculated that Sol could be her father.

        • Miss_Madness

I thought she was just locked up until he’d figure out how to free her?

    • Suzaku

Eddie was in the first trailer.

  • Milla

How about Arc system works review there YT guidelines? hell even SEGA allows gameplay from shining series and said it was a mistake for removals.
So if you see no gameplay from ASW games on YT you know why.

    • British_Otaku

They remove footage? I had a list somewhere of all of the publishers who were iffy with stuff, don’t recall seeing their name… >_>

I’ve seen a few tournament finals up, but I wouldn’t be surprised if more cool companies had a silly policy like that, it’s better than region locking, terrible DRM and disc locked content… I think… >_>

    • Zeik56

Are you just talking about footage from Xrd or all ASW games? Considering the only footage of Xrd right now is from the loketest, which I don’t believe was permitted to be recorded, I can understand them removing video. (Even if it would be nice if they didn’t.)

If they’re removing all video all of a sudden then that must be a very recent thing, because they never did that before.

      • Milla

Yeah basically any footage that contains Story mode hell even tutorial.. notable one is XBLAZE, Blazblue story, P4 Story modes etc.

        • Zeik56

Not showing the tutorial is weird, but I can kind of understand restrictions on story mode. People often put the full story mode online, which can eliminate a significant incentive for some people to buy the game. (I know a number of people who picked up P4A did it primarily for the story.)

Personally if I were them I’d have some kind of limit on that though. Like, after a year there’s probably no point anymore.

  • Arcana Wiz

If they are making the older characters first, i hope that Baiken and Axl get annouced next, and it’s probably that the newer characters will be the last ones, so i have to wait a little for Bridget…..

  • Astrotrain

New characters, but not from Overture, please. I want to see new characters from scratch.

    • Slayven19

I want to see characters from both.

  • Mace

I will be so broken-hearted if I-no does not make it in. I just picked up GG and I absolutely love playing as her.

  • Vash bane

    wait a minute…

I might be confusing this but is this like a reboot?
I don’t know I might just be reading that sentence wrong.
but its cool they have updated attacks.

    • Zeik56

No, it takes place after Guilty Gear 2: Overture. It’s more a fresh start in the sense that they’re no longer tied down to the XX framework, so they have more freedom in how they want to approach this new game.

  • Weird Al Yankovic

Still waiting for that awesome, inevitable I-no reveal…

Also, I notice how Sili’s got it under the PS4/X1 category already. Arc needs to stop beating around the bush with this ‘considering’ stuff and just say already it’ll be for next-gen.

  • Göran Isacson

Things I wonder: why May doesn’t look like she’s aged at all, and if they might end up creating a dedicated “roman cancel” button if they want more people to use it/more newcomers to get into the game. Wonder how that would affect balance…

  • Demeanor

Awww I really want to see the new face of Jam and Dizzy… :P

  • leingod

I’m all for new looks for the characters, but not a fan of Ky Kiske’s ponytail.

  • Aisha Lee

Not to get off topic. But Arksys is also doing a update to Persona 4 Arena that adds Yukari & Junpei from Persona 3 as playable characters.

  • Slayven19

I’m on board with all this, all I want is some solid info from more players on the beta.

  • Richard N

You know what I like about Daisuke? He shows up to this event in a normal t shirt and outfit as a whole and not in some leather jacket and sunglasses indoors. I mean no offense to Mori, but it’s nice to see Daisuke have a way more approachable and casual appearance to him. And it makes him seem like a real humble and cool guy.

  • Setsu Oh

so is it a reboot? a reimagining? a new book? WHAT IS IT???

  • Setsu Oh

i hope they go back to my messy brit punk! i HATE the X onward costume they put him in!
