Nintendo 3DS Was The Best-Selling Videogame System In July

By Ishaan . August 15, 2013 . 3:30pm

The Nintendo 3DS was the best-selling videogame system in the U.S. during the month of July, Nintendo have announced—although they haven’t provided exact sales figures, instead mentioning that 3DS hardware increased by 14% over July 2012.

Meanwhile, Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold over 150,000 copies between retail and download versions in its second month, bringing total U.S. sales to over 660,000 copies.

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is still going strong, too, and has now surpassed 820,000 copies sold, between retail and download copies. Finally, on the Wii U front, New Super Mario Bros. U has crossed 830,000 in sales.

I definitely enjoyed New Leaf, but I have not touched my AC:NL 3DS in nearly a month. I wonder how many Nintendo Zone gifts I missed.

    • Eric Harris

I never even really started. Guess I’m burned out on games to have to play AC every single day. Those missed items have zero value to me so I guess I can still play it without feeling bad.

      • SuperSailorV

I might be mistaken, but I’m preeeetty sure every one one of those gifts can be catalogued and rebought, so there’s another reason you shouldn’t feel bad at all.

I can’t wait to see what the sales will look like for Pokemon X & Y. If I’m not mistaken MH comes out in September, Pokemon in October, and Zelda in November. My 3DS will receive the majority of my attention game wise this yr.

    • ninjabart122

Unless you own a Japanese 3DS, you won’t be able to play MH4 until a US release date is announced, and I highly doubt it to be in the same month as the JP release.

      • Sango

        I’ve been aware of that.

add to that list Etrian Odissey Untold and (hopefully) Devil Survivor 2, and Layton 6 and Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright for the next year…

      my poor, poor wallet

  • Dust Huynh

    LOVE MY <3DS.

I love mine too, its a sexy beast of a system. :D

      • Ronldbx6

Me 3! I use it just about everyday.

  • Eric Harris

July/early august was really strong for 3DS with AC, SMTIV, and Mario & Luigi 3 really strong games in a short time.

    • Guest

      Mario and Luigi 4* :P

      Superstar Saga
      Partners in Time
      Bowser’s Inside Story
      Dream Team

But yes, 3DS has dominated my wallet this year, and still isn’t over.

Misread that with the lack of a comma. Tried to edit. Whoops.

    Yeah… but WHO CARES?

NINTENDO IS DOOMED!, just like master Pachter-sama-kun sensei said on twitter the 3DS sold 1,5 million less units than the DS at the period of time in the market.

Also nintendo is selling their IPs to other companies, the first being nintendogs which is going to be released on vita as playstation vita pets, In other words, IS OVER NINTENDO IS DOOMED AND THEY ARE CLOSING THEIR OFFICES TOMORROW.

(Talking seriously the 3ds is doing fine and pokemon xy will sell like pies)

LOL Some people have mistaken your sarcastic comment.

      • ninjabart122

I’d never recommend using sarcasm on the internet seeing as there really is no absolute way of detecting it unless they specifically point it out, or if it’s really really reaaaaally obvious sarcasm.

Some people can’t even grasp the concept of sarcasm so I’d rather not use it myself at all.

Fuck u ACNL, give me back my life!

Honestly kind of disappointed to see it doing so well. To say nothing of the library, which is subjective, the system itself is fairly poorly thought out. Beyond the weak hardware, it lacks the uniqueness Nintendo systems generally attempt to offer outside of 3D which only serves to cripple the systems capabilities for the purpose of a “neat” effect. That, and the poor OS and eShop.

As great as some games on it may be, as much as I enjoy my own 3DS and as much of a Nintendo fan as I am, I’m a little disappointed to see a relatively poorly designed platform top the sales charts by such a wide margin.

  • Magnumsally

    3ds is fine

  • Presea

ACNL is so addicting I have been playing it every day for hours since it came out. The 3DS is awesome I’m glad to hear it’s doing really well now.

Curse you Animal Crossing!! I-I know I was warned but I was not fully prepared for the take over haha. *hugs 3DS*

  • NTaiyokun

My 3DS has really been getting around.

    with games…

  • Göran Isacson

Kinda curious as to why they can’t give us exact consolenumbers, but can give us exact numbers on the amount of games sold. Different ways of measuring sales being handled by different buraeus and so they can’t get some data as easily as others?

  • GriffithOfTheHawk

Pokémon should help it reach the same sales level of the DS and GBA at the same period after console release. When you take this into account the 3DS is performing exceptionally well in Japan but not so much in the West.

  • wahyudil

in my country, Luigi Mansion was sold out everywhere …

  • Ronldbx6

    Playing Project X Zone.

  • katamari damacy

The 3DS is finally coming onto it’s own. All it required was a few good games. who knew games sold systems?
I’d be killer if the 3DS got a new Persona to go along with SMTIV
