Persona 4: The Ultimax Suplex Hold Introduces Shadow-Type Characters And More

By Sato . August 16, 2013 . 2:25am

In our earlier report, we got a peek at  Persona 4 Arena’s upcoming new version, which will be adding Yukari Takeba and Junpei Iori from Persona 3 to the roster of playable characters. An event for the game is currently taking place at arcade centers in Akihabara and Osaka, Japan, and Famitsu have followed up with a summary on the latest of what they report as the new Persona 4 Arena game.

Famitsu starts out their play impressions by pointing out that both characters sport impressive movement and systems that are unlike anything we’ve seen before in Persona 4 Arena. Yukari uses her bow and excels at wind-type “Garu” skills, and has top-notch speed. Her bow attacks are very fast, and not something you can easily dodge using your reflexes once the arrow takes off, which is said to be one of her notable strengths.

Additionally, her arrow can have a “Maha Garu” effect, which lasts momentarily on the screen and acts as a guided missile, giving Yukari a tricky element to her play style. While she excels at long-ranged attacks, she can also use jump and Persona for rush attacks at close-range.

Meanwhile, Junpei is a power-type character who uses various attacks with his bat. His strength lies in his long reach that allows him to hit his opponents from a slight distance. Since he uses a bat, his abilities revolve around a baseball system, that involves runners advancing and scoring, which adds to its strength.

In the new Persona 4 Arena, you’ll get to pick between different “Types” while selecting you character. The two types will be between Normal-type and Shadow-type. Normal-type characters can use “Bursts” to get out of enemy rushes and “One More Bursts” that power up combos. Shadow-type characters won’t be able to use Bursts; however, they’ll have their own unique system called “Shadow Rampage”. Elizabeth and Shadow Labrys won’t have Shadow-Type options, though. Players who opt to go with Normal-type, will find something similar to the previous Persona 4 Arena.

Meanwhile, the Shadow Rampage that is available for Shadow-type players, is executed by pressing the A, C, and D buttons simultaneously when your SP gauge is at its max. Once it’s activated, you’ll have an unlimited use of SP skills and Skill Boosts for a certain amount of time. While using Shadow Rampage, you’ll be able to connect various moves and combos that aren’t normally possible without the unlimited supply of SP gauge. Shadow-type sacrifices the use of Boosts in exchange for great offensive potential.

Furthermore, another thing Famitsu noticed during their play-through was the difference in auto-combo moves between the two types. Normal-type characters have new moves in the mix that can be used as a base in combos. Meanwhile, Shadow-types can fill up the SP gauge more upon landing the fourth hit of the auto-combo. Additionally, Shadow-type characters retain their SP gauge from the previous round. According to Famitsu, there aren’t any noticeable differences between special move capacities, offense, or defense between the two types, so it’ll boil down to the player’s preference in play-style.

Some skills will be compatible with the “S-Hold System” which charges the special attack by holding down the A button. Each character’s S-Hold System will vary. While the special attacks might look the same, their charged versions will have additional attributes, such as momentary invincibility. The charging might take a little while, but if used properly, it can be a great addition to your offensive and defensive repertoire.

Another big change from the previous version is that you can now cancel regular moves into short-jumps. Considering that you can do regular attacks while doing a short-jump, this adds a new offensive and defensive dimension to your strategy. Attacks that come from short-jumps can still be crouch-guarded, but you’ll now be easier to pull off moves from short-jumps more easily, making it an effective countermeasure against throws.

The “Fatal Counter” system has also been touched up. For example, Chie’s Furious Reaction “Hyper Counter” will always be a Fatal Counter regardless of the attack used against it. They also say that there will be some powerful attacks will be part of the new Fatal Counters.

Additionally, there will be some skills that you can use while back-dashing, and the All-Out-Attacks’ D-versions will now be possible to cancel.

As far as characters from the previous game go, they will have a vast amount of new elements and new skills. The new skills will be expanding the movement and play-style of the characters, that left Famitsu with a good impression of many possibilities. Existing moves have also been touched-up in different ways, so players will be required to change things up for combos and mix-ups with the new system.

The event is still going on and the new Persona 4 Arena game’s full title has yet to be revealed. Arc System Works will be revealing more as the event progresses over the weekend.

  • Wait what

This sounds really awesome. One thing that slightly confuses me is that in the screenshots of the character select screen, we can see both Labrys and Shadow Labrys like in the first game. If every character has a Shadow type with a different playstyle, are we going to have Labrys, Shadow Labrys, Shadow Labrys, and Shadow Shadow Labrys?

    • AkuLord3

Well if Teddie can have a Shadow…i don’t see WHY NOT 83

      • Bobby Jennings

    • The information available so far courtesy of Kurushii, stunedge, and jiyuna indicates that Elizabeth won’t have a Shadow option, so it’s possible that Labrys and S.Labrys will likewise be limited.

Nobody has stated (or found, translated, and relayed to one of the English news sites) if Labs/S.Labs will/won’t have shadow forms.

      • Wait what

Interesting. Thanks for the response. I think I would have preferred it if they just reworked the Shadow Labrys character into a Shadow-type for Labrys, but either way I’m sure it’ll be great.

        • Zeik56

It makes sense that they didn’t, given that Shadow Labrys is so radically different from normal Labrys. The other shadow forms will still use the same Persona’s and have largely the same playstyles.

        • Like Zeik56 mentions, because Labs and S.Labs are so different they can’t really roll them into the same character with just the “Shadow” playstyle difference.

I suspect that we will see a Normal and Shadow version for each (or at least regular Labrys) via some story mechanics.

          • Wait what

I’m guessing that in the story for this game all the Shadow characters are really that mysterious villain from the first game, since he can take the form of people’s shadows. Makes me wonder if we still won’t find out who/what he is until the end of this game, which makes me wonder if this will also end in a cliffhanger and become a series that (like Guilty Gear and Blazblue before it) will be around for years and years without solid resolution.

    • Sato

Famitsu had actually pointed out that there aren’t any Shadow-type options for either Elizabeth of Shadow Labrys, as you guys mentioned. Thanks for the heads up, added to the post :)

      • Brimfyre

Shadow Shadow Labrys would have been a good opportunity for a joke character.

“…Shadow Labrys, and Shadow Shadow Labrys?”
      yo dawg

  • Demandred

Ok, Atlus/Arc. Provided this gets localised, give Europe (and therefore Australia) a release date that’s somewhat concurrent with the US. Then we’ll talk. :3

Or you could just make the game region free. Like almost every PS3 game ever.

    • Except Persona 4 Arena.

    • Arcana Wiz

yeah, if the P4A situation repeat i dont see myself giving support to this game at launch, maybe a used copy or a price drop…..

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

    That’s a wacky outfit, Yukari

  • BlueTree

Hoping they don’t go too nuts on adding many more characters, though with the two they’ve added they’re still at a good number. Especially compared to other games where “oh man we just gotta put every character ever in this game.”

  • Aw man, I’m disappointed what they did with Junpei.
His outfit is… meh. I know he swings his weapon like a bit, but I would’ve liked to see him using a sword as well. Guess I’ll just keep maining Yu Narukami then.

    • Wait what

Junpei seems to have been reduced to “the Kanji of Persona 3”. Meaning, a character that was serious and well-rounded in the game they originate from, but in all future media will have his goofy elements exaggerated to turn him into a joke character.

      • InfernoCommander

Junpei… serious? Only time’s he was serious was when it came to Chidori, hatin’ on MC for being the leader, and the end of the world shenanigans. He was a goofball the rest of the time.

      • Well, that’s not true at all. Kanji had his serious moments in The Animation. His battle against Shadow Naota was a very badass one.

      • shafiq95

Kanji was only serious when the situation needs him to be,hell Persona 4 got thousand times funnier only after he joined the main cast

      • Arcana Wiz

yes hate when this happen, like some final fantasy character that i wont say the name to dont start a war. They completly toss up they personality of a entire game and focus on certain elements to make a one dimensional character…..

        • Fitzkrieg

          Thank you for saying this.
That reason on it’s own is why I loathe that particular FF that everyone seems to like for some inexplicable reason.

        • DyLaN

Eh, its only in tht one scene in the anime :/ He one of the comic relief character in P4 too.

  • Kami nii

    Yuka-tan!! :)

  • Abysswalker90

Please don’t region lock this game. >_>

  • Bobby Jennings

    Persona 3 MC please.

    • Asaoko

But he’s busy being a seal. …I mean, Seal. ^q^

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      as a boss most likely

    • Tom_Phoenix

      Female MC, please!

      • Brimfyre

I wish they would have both MC’s as one character that can tag team and really mess with people’s heads.

      • Arcana Wiz

Yes! this, she can even be a dlc of the MC, and have the same moves/gameplay like nu was with lambda in Blaz Blue CS.

    • Fitzkrieg

Yeah, because I’ve always wanted to play as a giant door in a fighting game.

      • Bobby Jennings

It’s not like he needs to be a giant door to be playable. Just give him to us as he was normally. Obviously you weren’t thinking when you read my comment.

        • Fitzkrieg

Oh, I know what you meant, I was just quoting a dude who commented on the SRK article.

Anyway, while Makoto would be nice to have, his inclusion would raise a few issues with the plot. His release from the seal means one of two things; either Nyx is loose and the world is screwed or Elizabeth has found a way to get him off of the door without compromising the seal.

Personally, I hope he stays as part of the seal. It would honestly feel like a bit of a cop-out if they went with the second explanation, not to mention it being extremely anticlimactic. The entire point of his sacrifice is that it was necessary; if you just bring him back, then what was the purpose of his/your actions?

Regardless, the P4A games are very plot-rooted. As such, I don’t really see Makoto’s return happening anytime in the future.

          • DragKudo

He is symbolized as the messiah. hIs death and resurrection. He can just be a shadow or something r just a non canon character.

          • Bobby Jennings

Him being added doesn’t have to affect the plot. He can just be playable

          • Fitzkrieg

I dunno, it takes a lot of effort to make well-tuned characters for fighters and P4A is pretty plot-rooted with it’s character decisions.

The only way I’d see him being put in is if Nyarlathotep is impersonating him; which, now that I think about it, would be pretty kickass and very appropriate.

      • s07195

Bonus stage like destroying the car?

  • Linhua

    … Welcome home, Takeba.

  • Demeanor

My main is Yukiko… and I’m trying hard not to pass out from glee while imagining what kind of inferno Shadow Yukiko will allow me to unleash… XD Fire Break. Maharagidyne, Maharagidyne, Maharagidyne, Maharagidyne… XD

  • Göran Isacson

Interesting- so ArcSys is implementing a kind of-version of the “gold character” system they had in Guilty Gear here, only one that’s actually mired in the games canon? I like.

Also- Junpei as a baseball player, huh? For some reason I always thought he’d try to get into law enforcement when he grew up, if not as a cop then maybe security guard or something like that… oh well. Different interpretations, I guess.

    • Zeik56

He probably flunked out of police academy.

  • Zurashii

Shadow Teddie is gonna be a nightmare to fight, in every way… 0_0

  • Thankfully, someone in Tumblr provided or did partial translations for Yukari and Junpei’s bios:

Junpei Iori, Absolute Perfect Zero Hitter?: Mostly on a part-time job, he’s also recently a baseball coach.

Yukari Takeba, The Tacky Pink Sniper: An active college model. She’s also working as a Tokusatsu Super Hero actress, thanks to her pretty looks and gymnastic skills.

    • Espoir

Yukari became a model! I’m so happy for her :’)

    • Arcana Wiz

pink sniper? She is sounfing more and more with a magical girl… And well good for her for the career, maybe she moved on the protagonist and it’s living a new life.

      • Perhaps her career choice of also being a Featherman actress was a way of helping him. She’ll probably use her show to inspire hope and optimism that life is still enjoyable and worth living for despite its harshness and cruelties.

A contribution of hers that perhaps one day, when people are no longer chained to their nihilistic urges, the Great Seal would probably no longer be needed, and perhaps Makoto/P3MC will be free and move on to the afterlife to rest in peace.

    • Isaac Newton

That’s why Yukari looks like a sentai character LOL

    • KuroNathan
      • TheFoolArcana

      • Congrats. :)

  • Prinnydoom

Elizabeth wont have a shadow type………because she is a shadow. Ah ha. Got ya. Still hope these guys are dlc.

  • r0gamer940

maybe this will continue the story after the p4g epilogue

  • MrTyrant

Is this new version an update or a completly new game?

    • Tre W

It not only has new characters and gameplay changes, it will also reportedly have a new story.

If that doesn’t qualify for being a new game, I don’t know what does!

      • MrTyrant

Didn’t read the story and all that.

  • C_Diamond

I think they might even add more P3 characters because you know…P3 movie.

  • Xerain

Please add Koromaru-san. I want to play his story mode so badly.

    • Barrylocke89

I imagine that balancing Koro would be tough, seeing as his hitbox would be so different from those of a human character.

      • Fitzkrieg

I dunno, Amaterasu was doable in MvC. I’m sure ArcSys is creative enough to work something out.

      • Xerain

        Always bet on Hitboxes.

But in all seriousness, given he possesses the almighty Koromaru wings, the vast majority of his attacks should make him airborne. This woudl also fit with his fighting style int the game. Being air borne could put him in attacking range for the majority of attacks.

    • Arcana Wiz

i already see him, probably a fast character hard to hit, his moves will have instant kill like Elizabeth, i would play so much with him!

  • EtherealEarth

I hope that the game will shade some light about what happens between Junpei and Chidori after P3 incident. Dying to know DX

    • Xerain

Unfortunately, it is quite possible those extra scenes between Chidroi and Junpei are possibly not canon. Not saying for sure they’re not, I’m just saying they are optional scenes that are easily missed… and they did not even exist in the original P3 and were added in FES.

      I suppose we’ll find out.

      • EtherealEarth

True, though I really wish it would be a canon ending, seeing how they would make a good couple T^T

        • Neppygear

Chidori is canonically dead. The Answer even has Junpei outright saying that.

          • Zeik56

As I recall, he never actually outright says that she’s dead, just makes vague references about how he wish he could change how things turned out. Personally I’d prefer if she wasn’t alive, since I don’t really those extra scenes justified her resurrection, but that doesn’t mean they can’t.

  • $61526767

Look forward to seeing more, but hope they add both Ken and Koro.

  • Sentsuizan_93

The Shadow versions sound interesting. They can’t burst, but they are able to have an unlimited supply of SP upon using Shadow Rampage and connect otherwise impossible combos for a certain amount of time and retain SP for the next round, which the normal versions can’t do. I guess the Shadow versions are recommended for aggressive gameplay. It’ll be interesting to see it in action.

  • shafiq95

I really hope at least one Persona 2 character made it in the game

    • MrTyrant

I’m waiting for that too! but unless they add all p3 characters first It seems imposible.

      • shafiq95

And the music from Eternal Punishment opening needs to be in this as well

    • Ouryu

Tatsuya from persona 2 with the Sun arcana would be cool

    • Michael Connell

      Wouldn’t mind fighting Hitler again

      • SlickRoach

I’m just imagining Shadow Hitler as a sub-boss haha

      • That’ll make a very sweet mid-boss/final boss beat down. If he is indeed one in this game, looking forward to hearing another arrange of “Knights of the Holy Spear” theme.

    • personablaze
    • Arcana Wiz

I hope for a SMT entry cameo character…… because why not?

      • KuroNathan

Hitoshura would wipe the floor with persona chars though.

        • Arcana Wiz

he could be like elizabeth, when he loses he it’s like this oh you broke one of my fingernails, dont wanna spend my time with you anymore *exits battle.
And i was thinking about he too.

          • KuroNathan

Hmmm I guess, but unlike Elizabeth he doesn’t seem like the type to take it easy. Flynn however might be a choice and could add a smirk system or something

        • Hound

Hitoshura can always play the “demon” role.
Thanatos is rather OP on its own and you get Elizabeth & Thanatos in P4A.

          Maybe Raidou with Hitoshura?
Either way, they’d make stellar boss fight(s)
(I’ve always wanted to see a SMT character wipe the floor with persona users.)

      • DyLaN

Because the canon is screaming. The P1/P2 are still within the Persona universe (I think).

        • alixraen

All the Persona games and SMT If… take place in the same universe. Ooh, now there’d be an interesting choice, Tamaki Uchida from If…

          • DyLaN

Enlighten me abt SMT if please.

          • alixraen

Basically SMT If… was released on the SNES in ’94 and became the template for the future Persona series – group of high school kids + dungeon crawler. Similar to P1, it had branching paths depending on which party member you picked to accompany you. The protagonist of If…, Tamaki Uchida, appears in both P1 and P2, tying If… into the Persona universe.

        • Hound

Canon be damned. They could always treat SMT/Raidou/Survivor/Saga encounters as they did in Digital Devil Saga. Characters go some place and fall under some hallucination where they fight a character. Could be some “weird anomaly in the TV world.”

Nobody complained that you could encounter Demi-fiend (Hitoshura) in Digital Devil Saga or fight Raidou in Nocturne.

The great thing about SMT/Raidou/Survivor characters is that they summon the demons as separate entities rather than as an attack. A demon summoning system could be kind of cool depending on how they do it.

Even without one, Hitoshura with Pierce, Heat Wave, Javelin Rain, and Gaia Rage would make him stellar. Plus he has those tattoos that show his health. Would be a lot of fun to play. Serph and friends could fight like Vanilla Ice does in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (it didn’t make Vanilla Ice low tier.) The style changes would add a lot to the game. I would be thrilled if characters crossed over as the game expanded. It’d leave room for a lot interesting stage environments too (Amala Network anyone?)

We’d also have a chance to play as dead characters/bosses if canon isn’t more important than fun.

          • DyLaN

I don’t mind if they are special cameo/non-plot related cameo, just not randomly pops up in the plot.

      • Hound

Indeed. Persona and Devil Survivor are promoted by their anime and the fighting game. There’s really no reason why cameo characters can’t be included.

It’s not like the TV world is strictly ground in realism & without random events & cameos. That’s the whole scenario of P4A.. There’s a countless number of ways that they could cameo Raidou and Hitoshura without destroying the plot.

“The gas must have been causing hallucinations” was their explanation for Nocturne’s Demi-Fiend (Hitoshura) wiping the floor with you in Digital Devil Saga, and that’s one of the most memorable cameos gaming has to offer.

It’s really odd that Atlus is working so hard to separate Persona and Shin Megami Tensei from each other.

The games are made by mostly the same people, have a similar dark atmosphere & play style, and P1-2 are so far separated from P3-4 that they may as well claim that they’re “not Persona” as well.

Persona 2 had “devil summoners” which links its universe to Raidou’s, and SMT:If… (basically Shin Megami Tensei 2’s alternate scenario) also had connections to Persona.

  • EQeE

    Persona 3 had 3 versions:P3,P3:FES,P3P
Persona 4 soon will have 4 versions:P4,P4:G,P4:A and now P4:A2.
When Persona 5 comes I expect that we will get 5 persona 5 themed games.

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

P4:A doesn’t count. It’s an entirely separate game. If anything it’s spin-off sequel.

      • Brimfyre

Yeah and I doubt this will be the last P4 game in the canon.

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

But it also counts as a Persona 3 game.

  • shadowind

Hopefully, when the inevitable console versions come out in Europe, it’ll be published by another publisher that won’t take almost a year to bring it out here (And FYI, I have a friend who works for SCEE as a tester and he recently told me that they didn’t receive the first batch of PAL code for the game until just around the time the game was due to come out in the rest of the world!)

  • Espoir

Port to Vita with Yukari and Junpei please <3

    • theman_714

god I hope they announce that, AND that it’s region free!

      • Espoir

All Vita games are region free, are they not? Go localization for a better effect~

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Shadow Minato/Makoto as secret boss! He technically isn’t dead so he can have a Shadow!

  • Neppygear

I’m not really feeling the hype. Like, at all. I’ll feign a little bit of interest if there’s any actual plot development.

    • 하세요

It’s a freakin’ fighting game. Story is nice, but when it comes down to it, focus on making the game competitive friendly, THEN worry about a plot. If they wanted nothing but plot, they’d make Persona 4 The Second or something.

      • Lynx

You…You never played Arena, did you?
        Or BlazBlue for that matter?

        • 하세요

I’ve played both (I main Liz and Platinum). BlazBlue is still mainly a fighting game, do not forget that.

    • KingRuff

Go play the actual Persona 4 then. Like Haseyo said, its a fighting game first and foremost.

    • DyLaN

      Its a location test.

  • JazzWithAttitude

Anyone notice that some Persona’s have more HP now?
Elizabeth for example have 6 tarot cards and Teddie 4.

    • Ouryu

      I heard Akihiko has 2.

      • personablaze

He does, but they replenish pretty fast.

    • 하세요

Elizabeth will have 7, Akihiko has 2, and some others are also changed. This is more than a character update – this also has many supers changed, attacks, and other mechanics.

  • Boyzby

Reading this bit of news is the best way that I could’ve woken up today. I think I’m going to play a random Persona game just out of celebration. ^_^

    • ZetaSiren

      I’ve decided to finish P3FES :P

  • Brimfyre

Now with the expanded roster I do wish they would have just
called this Persona Fighter or something, so they could just always just add Persona characters to it forever.

  • ZetaSiren

One of the area’s looks to be outside Tartarus

  • anthony apduhan

Need characters from Persona 1 and 2!

  • vileBrenman

I hope this gets a vita port. I would really like this on the go

    • Croix Zapp

i predict arena will come to vita this or next year since atlus have yearly release

    • tobi

Us Vita owners will buy anything. That’s how hungry we are.

  • SetzerGabbiani

So Shadow = Orochi in this game.

  • EQeE

Why the hell Junpei now wears his basball cap backwards?. It looks like that he grew some hair. Yukari looks like a human Gundam. Her bow wasn’t pink in P3. I hope that this game will be realeased for PS3 and Xbox360. Why downvote my comment if I have nothing against this game ?.

    • Arcana Wiz

for me Yukari looks like a magical girl, but the color of the bow depends of the weapon she was equipped, pretty sure there was one pink.

    • Zeik56

Junpei is a baseball player. Yukari is the Pink Featherman Ranger.

    • MrTyrant

      >human gundam

      Define that please.

      • EQeE

        • MrTyrant

But Yukari forgot her Gundam armor here >:

    • DyLaN

Maybe ppl think you are dissing the characters.

      • EQeE

Hell, No. Junpei is one of my favorites. Yukari is pretty cool too.

  • Arcana Wiz

New mechanics, new characters, new modes, balancing, new moves, yes, this is looking to be a new game, not a update like some rumors.

    • Isaac Newton

      You forgot the new story.

      • Arcana Wiz

i missed it, so there is a new story? sweet.

        • Zeik56

I don’t believe that’s been confirmed yet, especially since this loketest is only for the arcade mode. It seems pretty likely there will be in the console version though.

  • MrTyrant

I think there is enough space for two character more in the selection screen.

  • Asura

I really hope this will end up being an update and not an “Ultra” edition or whatever. Judging by the content though, it may be a new game…
Well, I guess I can wait until it drops to $15 if that ends up happening…

  • KuroNathan

I find it ironic SHADOW labrys can’t use the shadow option, but I assume with unlimited special meter she’d basically be way too broken.

No region lock this time, please

  • KuroNathan

Hmmm, wait if ps4 doesn’t have backwards compatibility would this be a ps3 game ps4 or dlc?

  • If there are going to be two more characters, I believe that they will have to be Persoba 4 characters judging by the obvious empty slots’ locations.

    • Slayven19

Who is even left to get from p4, adachi? Its probably one returning character and one new character.

      • RisukuAozora

Doesn’t necessarily have to be P4. Still P3 there. Maybe Ken Amada could be in it. Koromaru maybe…?

        • Arcana Wiz

          maybe minato/makoto?

        • Slayven19

I realize that but I was just questioning why he said only p4 characters are left.

      • ivanchu77

From P4 they can put Adachi and Margaret

I don’t remember marie being a battle character but Izanami I guess could be there. I did forget about Margaret whom I wanted from the beginning.

  • MSJ

be cool if they added nyarly and philemon into the cast along with some Persona 1 and 2 chars, but that’s just wishful thinking on my part..soooooo hyped for this!!!

  • AnimusVox

I passed on P4A because I didnt care to much for the P4 characters but I’m going to get this due to more P3 characters.

  • Daniel Williams

so is this a sequel, or is it a special edition Ultimate marvel vs capcom 3?

Shouldn’t assume that means the game isn’t coming. It just means that currently, there are no plans. I mean jeez, let it have an arcade life first. It’s not even out yet in arcades, it’s having a loketest.
