<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week, Japan celebrated Obon—a festival where one celebrates their ancestors. While not listed as a public holiday, Obon usually involves customary leave, and because of this, the holiday effect was in full swing last week, boosting hardware sales across the board, as well as the sales of popular software.

This was most prominent in the case of the Nintendo 3DS, with the top-ten software sales chart consisting almost entirely of Nintendo 3DS games from various publishers. Namco Bandai’s Disney Magic Castle took the top spot for the week once again, with other recent popular releases like Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies still going strong.

In particular, Level 5’s Youkai Watch has managed to sell relatively consistently these past few weeks. While not a huge breakout hit, the game has sold around 135,000 copies since launch and looks like one of those games that will enjoy a long tail.

Also worth pointing out is that it looks like Nintendo have shipped new copies of New Play Control! Pikmin 2 for Wii, to coincide with Pikmin 3. The Wii port of Pikmin 2 was at the #31 spot two weeks ago, but the holiday effect pushed it into the top-20 last week.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Wii U seems to be doing quite well now with Pikmin 3. I think Ninty has safely addressed concerns and have it on its swift upward trajectory towards long lasting success at a brisk pace since its release and soon. 2mln by the end 1.3 mln by the end of the year seems likely.

  • TheExile285

3DS has Japan by the balls.

EDIT: Is 70-80k good for a NIS game? Kind of sad to see an old Wii game outperforming TWatHK. Not as bad as Killer is Dead I suppose….

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Seriously the top 20 games only has 4 titles NOT on Nintendo Systems

      • komiko12

        I think its just 3.

    • SirRichard

70-80k is pretty good for NIS’ stuff, far as I’m aware. Their main issue of late has been trying to create non-Disgaea games that perform above 40 or 50k, so Hundred Knights looking set to break 80k is definitely above par.

Fantasy Life Link! doesn’t seem to have sold al that much? Or is it good for an extended edition? How much did the normal Fantasy Life sell?
I just really hope it gets a translation. Other than that I can’t believe Tomodachi Collection: New Life is such a seller. I don’t think it has been out of the top 20 since it was released.

    • KHSoraKeyBlade

I believe Level-5 said back in April they sold over 300,000 copies of Fantasy Life. The low-ish sales of Fantasy Life Link! is probably due to the fact that people who already had the normal version could simply upgrade over the eShop rather than buy a full retail title again (though I could be wrong on that).

      • No, you are right. That is the reason why.

        • Chim_era

I knew you could update but still. I honestly thought the game would do a lot beter if you see the popularity of AC. Maybe it’s because it’s a new series.
I just don’t like AC all that much. It is a great improvement on the precious once and it’s fun but for me it went dull pretty quickly. I think FL would have more repay value but then I can’t know until I try :p

  • andyscout

Glad to see Dragon’s Crown still selling. I’m sure Vanillaware must be pleased with 250,000 sales between the two platforms.

  • Suicunesol

“the holiday effect was in full swing last week”

You sure? Sales look crappy across the board. 3DS sales aren’t much better than usual, and neither are the Vita’s sales. Everything is under 50k.

Then again, we have no new game releases this week. New game releases usually fill up a few spots on the chart.

    • Look at last week’s chart. Everything is up from the previous week with no new releases.

      • Suicunesol

Still, whenever I see “holiday effect was in full swing” and “boosting hardware sales” I expect more than just a few thousand units of an increase. I guess Obon isn’t as big as Golden Week or Christmas.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

          Its not^

  • ronin4life

Mario and Luigi still going strong too, considering the poor launch.

  • Göran Isacson

Not a whole lot of movement here, with the exception of Witch and Hundred Knights which seem to be on it’s way down. Still, I hope it’s sold enough to justify development at least… also kinda surprised that Romance Dawn seems to be staying on the charts. Usually anime games plummet after the first week.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

wii-u is slowly getting life…U can do it. Show us the power! Nintendo power *oh I had to*

    • Renaldi Saputra

I think Wii U will eventually getting full life when the Pokemon Wii U game will be released

  • Renaldi Saputra

seems One Piece RD porting didn’t do very well too..
ahh, maybe porting wasn’t a very good way to do.. seeing the sales chart..
oh at least Romance Dawn finally got plan to localize..

demmm, we need Re:Digitize Decode too!!!!!
