Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Has A Whopping 231 Costumes To Unlock

By Ishaan . August 22, 2013 . 10:20am

While Dead or Alive 5 had 114 costumes the player could access, Team Ninja have added even more for Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate. Publisher Tecmo Koei say the game will have 231 costumes in total that you can unlock within the game.

Costumes can be unlocked using Grade Points, which are earned by fighting and winning matches. Winning consecutive ranked matches can earn you Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Fighter ranks. These ranks earn extra GP with wins, and defeating another ranked fighter nets you a GP bonus as well.

Additionally, Tecmo also announced two new feauters for the game, the first being a 2-on-2 tag mode where you and a friend can challenge other players online.

The second major feature is the introduction of “Character Points,” which indicate a player’s skill level with each character. You can use this to check if your opponent is using his or her best character or not, and where they place in the world ranking.

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate will be available in September for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Cool beans, I just wish things were more interchangable and customizable. I mean there’s an amazing fighting engine there, but stuff like VF5 and even Tekken 5 let you customize things better. Tecmo needs to step it up :/.

    • BloodyNights

I’d rather have awesome costumes, then subpar customization. Personally
though you should have added to that list, Soul Calibur V now that was pretty nice you could really use your imagination.

Though the main reason I prefer da Awesome costumes is because if I go over to a friends house, or to a tournament, there is a chance that my main costume will be unlocked, and for use. Custom made costumes? Sadly it won’t :(

      • Repede91

I`m with you on this. I`d rather have a set number of costumes designed by professional artists than some half hearted internet nonsense. In my brief 5 matches with SC V I encountered a half assed Boba Fett and Chuck Norris.

It would be like shooting themselves in the foot as otakus buy swimsuit packs like hot pancakes.

  • Freya2012

    Man, that 5 bar connection!

  • dragoon_slayer12

So original 5 doesn’t have tag mode?Question is, will this and 5+ (vita) be cross play, and if not, will they make one? I’m thinking of getting it from the psn sale, but don’t want to get screwed in the process (Ragnorok Odyssey Ace)

    • GaiunxWolfenX

it does have tag mode just that the online tag is still just you vs. your opponent, i hope they fix a little the online structure because am kinda laggy almost all the time with this game and not with others like persona 4 A, soul5, even tekken revo gives me less lag than doa5

    • BloodyNights

Original 5 had Tag Team mode, but you couldn’t team up with a friend and play together online. As for 5+ I got no idea lol

    • doubleO7

5+ was a fairly straight port of vanilla DOA5. Therefore, there will be no crossplay between Ultimate and 5+, because of all the new modes/costumes/characters/netcode changes/etc they added.

  • zferolie

Holy crap that is a lot of costumes… I really miss the days when we had to unlock them, and not buy them…

    • British_Otaku

I assume you are talking about buying costumes in game vs unlocking them by doing challenges in game. In practice, there isn’t much difference, the money can go towards buying costumes for characters you aren’t playing as though, it would be an odd design choice to get a costume for Ginyu when you were playing as Cell Jr.

  • Tincho D

    Thank Lord it’s not DLC!

  • KingRuff

Glad to see you unlock them with “Grade Points”. I’m tired of unlocking costumes with “Hard Earned Money”.

    • Setsu Oh

I M TIRED OF UNLOCKING COSTUMES PERIOD! japanee games have to leave that sheet behind! FOR GOOD! i already work for a living let men enjoy the game!

  • Guest

That 2v2 could change competitive beat em up as we know it. Now you’ll actually be able to practice 2v2 online without having to sleep over at you’re friend’s house constantly, making it more accessible for the general public. That said, everyone else has had lagg as their doom for making it work in the past, and even if they say the core reason for them making DoA5U was to deal with lagg buried deep in the code, I’d still be impressed if they manage to pull it off in tag mode.

  • DenjinJ

That would have been awesome back in the day. Sadly I think the character redesign is just “Zombie Express” creepy. They shouldn’t have aimed so close to realism, because they just tumbled down the uncanny valley.

    • doubleO7

I disagree. If anything, I thought the old doll-like anime styled DOA looked that way. The new realistic style is a significant improvement IMO, especially in motion. The screenshots dont really do it justice.

  • doubleO7

Wow, thats quite the number of costumes.
The 114 costumes for DOA5 doesn’t include its DLC, which raises the number to 227.
Which means DOA5U could easily surpass a whopping 300, or even 350 costumes, once all its potential DLC is taken into account. HOLY. FRIKKEN. CRAP. That may be the highest costume count for any fighter I’ve ever seen (except maaayyybe DOA2U, which also had a freakishly absurd number of costumes, though I’m not sure exactly how many).

    • doubleO7

Someone over at FreeStepDodge did the math, figured I’d post it here for y’all.

      “Of those 231:

      – 114 are from vanilla DOA5
      – 55 are from the bundled DLC
      – 30 brand new ones shown so far
      – 18 shown for new characters
      – 4 previously Vita exclusive

That leaves about 10 unrevealed costumes unless I’m forgetting something”

      • Sakurazaki

Aww. When you really think about it I’m not so excited anymore… I didn’t like too many of the costumes so I was hoping for a whole bunch of new ones.

        • doubleO7

Oh no, I’m sorry I killed your excitement :(

          • Sakurazaki

It’s okay, no harm done XD

Costumes are one thing, but at least the game is great!

  • Yan Zhao

I just hope they give us more normal, casual, or fighting outfits and not cram a half dozen bikini’s for everyone. I mean they’re nice and all, but was 6+ different bikini outfits per female char really necessary in vanilla?

    • Guest

I suspect it’s because they are very easy to make.

But… isn’t TIna the only one with 3 swimsuits?
The rest has either 2 or 1, or am I totally forgetting something/one?

      • Yan Zhao

There were the collector edition bikinis, the pre-order bikini’s, 3 in-game unlockable bikinis, then theres waves of DLC bikinis and more pre-order/special edition ones for the Vita version, and now Ultimate.

    • Göran Isacson

Word up, yo. When so many costumes look like they literally just took five or so minutes to plan AND model, having a lot of them ain’t really an impressive feat.

  • AoNoise

    Heard that Namdai? UNLOCK.

tekken has a good amount of accessories and costumes to unlock bro

  • XiaomuArisu

    231 costumes?
    Which arent DLC?
    Awesome,time to play dress-up!

  • artemisthemp

Good with a game, where the costumes ain’t DLC.
