Steel Empire, A Steampunk Shooter For Genesis, Is Getting A Makeover For 3DS

By Spencer . August 22, 2013 . 10:50pm

steel1aFollowing in the footsteps of Sega Ages, but not from  Sega themselves is a remastered version of Steel Empire. Steel Empire is a horizontal shmup with a steampunk setting. The ship you pilot can level up by collecting power ups similar to U.N. Squadron.

If you missed Steel Empire and the Game Boy Advance version (only released in Japan and throughout Europe) you can get the game on Nintendo 3DS. Starfish, the makers of Elminage, is porting the game and adding a few enhancements. Steel Empire will have improved graphics, stereoscopic 3D support, and rebalanced difficulty.

Steel Empire will be released in Japan this December. UFO Interactive has worked with Starfish for a number of years and recently published Mamorukun Curse!, so they seem like a probable candidate to release Steel Empire in North America.

    And in Europe, we stink.

Was this the game that was very loosely based on Castle in the Sky?

  • Julien_N

So this wasn’t a simple port but a makeover? Hum, now I may be interested!

I have not played the Mega Drive version so I don’t know if it is based on it or on the GBA game, but the bosses in those screenshots remind me of the GBA Steel Empire’s and I thought the bosses were different between the two versions. (The final boss sure is, at least)
Same goes for the graphics in general, they really look like the GBA version, but improved.

If it is mostly based on the GBA Steel Empire, the higher screen resolution will be a really nice way to enjoy that game as it felt a bit cramped before.

Hope it comes to the rest of the world! (and not just North America… =P)

A shmup that lets me control a laserfiring blimp? I… am intrigued.

    • Julien_N

The blimp is so awesome, I love it. It is also such an uncommon ship type in shoot’em ups.
Furthermore, it is the sturdier of the two ships, being able to withstand more hits.

      • Göran Isacson

Ah, figured it would be the slower but sturdier one. Also much bigger… is there any difference between it and the aeroplane besides size and “HP”?

        • Julien_N

I am not 100% sure about all the differences but I think the “missiles” (the ships also send some missiles on the ground if you press the shot button) behave differently, the angle at which they are sent and maybe their power are not the same.

Easily a day 1 purchase for me.

Steel Empire was a rather underrated game. One of the best Genesis shmups I’ve played, but it seems to have gone overlooked by most.
