Hold On, The Monster Hunter 4 Opening Video Is One Wild Ride

By Spencer . August 27, 2013 . 2:57am

Insect staff? Check. Felyne friend? Check. OK, you’re all set for Monster Hunter 4! If you didn’t catch it from the game’s opening video, Monster Hunter 4 allows players to jump and grab on to enemies. Actually, thinking back to when Monster Hunter 4 was announced two years ago, the opening video looks a lot like the concept video when Capcom unveiled the game.

Didn’t expect Tigrex to get slaughtered, owned, curbed stomped etc by Goa like that.

    • Spicy

That was rather disturbing, it’s the first time that Tigrex is in a Nintendo system and got destroyed by the new flagship monster.

      • Sango

Yeah it makes me curious to see who will be the flagship monster for 4G.

        • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

With how nasty Goa is, I’m curious to see what kind of sub-species they’d give it…and how much more ferocious and evil it is…

          • KuroNathan

the usual option is to add more veins and either lighting blue or some other bright colors to accentuate its black body

          • J_Joestar

            Slime Goa!

      • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Think back to the PSP days. Monster Hunter Freedom 2. Did you think Gravios’ beam would lose to Akantor? And more recently in MH3U. Did you think Agnaktor would fall to Brachydios’ slime? Eventually, as time passes, monsters that used to be tough become weak compared to the later monsters of the newer games. I’m with you on the disturbing part, though. It’s the first time I’ve seen a large monster get crushed like that and literally “owned”. That’s just how tough Goa’s going to be…not looking forward to facing it…

    • 하세요

I heard Goa eats Deviljho for breakfast.

      • Pockystix

        well I heard. . . I heard they were dating. . .

  • Peace Legacy

…and this video pretty much sums up my opinion about large barrel bombs
“Hey, do you know how large barrel bomb is waste of time, having to bait and all for measly damages… yeah, let’s make an opening out of that!”

    • Sango

That older hunter should be ashamed of himself for being a vet and not having trapmaster and bombardier.

    • Ramengeddon

Funny how large barrel bombs are involved in speed runs.

      • Peace Legacy

They use large barrel bomb plus, have bomb skills, and don’t spend 2 and a half minute baiting the monster
The way that is shown in the trailer is how most bomb beginners do it… and it is counter-intuitive

        • 하세요

I think it was for comedic purposes, but yes it was very foolish especially against a monster as fast as a raged Tigrex.

    • https://www.facebook.com/mike.degroodt Mike de Groodt

I wanted to disagree but yeah bombs are best placed when the monster is downed and not running to kick your ass xD

      • Ferofax

It’s also a good source of stagger. Setting one down (trapmaster, of course) and blowing it up when a monster gets to it usually gives a stagger and/or a part break. Of course, there are better ways to get a stagger, but hey.

    • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

That just reminds me of the first time me and my friends met Pink Rathian. While she lay in a trap, we all set Large Barrel Bombs and Large Barrel Bomb Pluses. The problem? My friends ran off after one of them put down a Small Barrel Bomb while I was still setting up my Large bombs. I died. Pink Rathian didn’t. -_-

      • Ferofax

You died from a single LBB/LBB+ explosion? Because IIRC, you can stand in the middle of 8 LBBs and you only get hit by ONE — the first explosion that registers damage on you.

It holds true for any other damage in the game, in that a monster can combo you but you only get hit by the first that connects until you get out of your recovery animation. An exception would be continuous damage (poison, walking on lava, on fire, etc).

        • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Was that mechanic in Monster Hunter Freedom? Because it happened in that game. And if it is just one bomb that affected me, maybe my armour was really weak. I wasn’t poisoned or anything. I don’t know how else to explain it, but I did die when the bombs went off.

          • Ferofax

Could be that you were under max health or so? In any case, I suppose it CAN happen, just not very likely. I mean, I know for a fact that if you have minimum defense, a single LBB+ will kill you at 100HP.

          • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Then yeah, it must’ve been my armour. I forgot to mention my health was at max. xD

  • Anna Scruton

    I want a Bug Staff.

  • gamefreak86

    Awesomesauce.

  • James Enk

    Awesomeeeee!!!!!

  • Namuro

I literally shed a tear watching this trailer…

    MonHun for life!

  • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

    freaking epic

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

One of the most epic opening for Mon Hun here. Not to mention, this is probably the first time i see Tigrex get own this hard.O_o

  • fairysun

Of course the video has to end seconds before the showdown before the character and the more badass monster.

  • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

I was expecting more than just one scene like most other games. They usually have “Hunter is gathering, faces monster. Switch to village, villagers doing various deeds while the Hunter prepares to leave on a quest. Back to Hunter(s) facing monster. BAM! Logo!” Ah well, still an awesome opening.

    • ChirotheHiro

I’m assuming they went with this for MH4 rather than what they used for say, MH3U due to the stronger story element and plot in this game compared to previous titles. Using plot relevant characters rather than a random selection of hunters makes more sense, when you think of it that way.

      • ChirotheHiro

As to why they choose to have the hunter go hunting for the entire opening and reveal none of the other key characters (besides the bald hunter?) is beyond me.

        • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Actually, the 2 hunters seen in the opening are both random. If you look at a previous article, you’ll notice none of the 4 “A-Team” hunters are present in the opening.
          http://www.siliconera.com/2013/08/11/capcom-introduces-monster-hunter-4s-version-of-the-a-team/

          • ChirotheHiro

Oh. I was pretty sure the hunter using the insect staff is meant to represent the player, since the armor they were wearing looked like the armor you start with in the game. I was also under the impression that the insect staff was the first weapon you received and the same type as the one used by the hunter. Not that it’s all that important, but that may explain the “rookie mistake” the hunters made in the opening.

          • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

Well, all hunters used in the openings are supposed to represent the player(s), so your not wrong. I did forget about how you start out. Most other openings have some village scene showing some of the other key characters, but MH4′s intro doesn’t.

  • XypherCode

    Great opening! :)

  • M’iau M’iaut

Okay guys. No console requests or console wars. Friendly thread reminder. :P

    • TheGioG

But can we request Siliconera’s head honchos reveal the American release date? We KNOW y’all know it! The wait for something this epic is killing us! D:

      • Zero_Destiny

        Spring of 2099.

        • TheGioG

          What?!

    • http://www.angelmassb.co.nr/ Angel Mass

I wonder if there is still consoles wars at this point…

Sony fans have already move to something different and Monster Hunter fans either already have, or are planning to get, a 3DS/Wii U

      • 하세요

I was anti-3DS for MH as well in the beginning, but once I got used to it…I can’t imagine playing it on another handheld. Having dual screens is so lovely. Japan learns to adjust and move onto the next console, why can’t we?

        • http://www.angelmassb.co.nr/ Angel Mass

Completely agree with you and I think that makes the difference between a true MH fan to just a Sony Fanboy.

    • RichyGaming

      PS5, and Xbox Two, plox?

  • Ahmad Reyner Nabeel

The first time I see Tigrex get owned like that. Goa Magara will be a tough monster to defeat I think.

    • J_Joestar

Yeah, Goa just lands on him, then you see Tiggy struggling and Goa’s foot goes down as if casually crushing a bug.

      • Ahmad Reyner Nabeel

I’m too scared too get even closer to Goa Magara… or else I’ll get crushed like that poor Tiggy haha

  • Happy Gamer

I’m sure Goa isn’t a “monster.” It’s a supernatural evil being that broke through a seal to come conquer the lands again.

  • Pockystix

love the opening, hoping they give charge axe some love in the 4G opening~

  • cyberkinghardy

That moment when you saw one of the best games…in the wrong console.

  • J_Joestar

was hoping that they would have a sneak preview at the end like in 3U’s intro showing Mira in the distance.
Still want to know what that giant serpent thing is

  • Go2hell66

Ok that was a freaking cool opening video

  • http://people.ign.com/princerevolver Surgeon Of Death

So basically you’ll be waiting for nothing. GL with that!

  • TheExile285

Its never gonna happen. Capcom doesn’t support Vita.

    http://www.siliconera.com/2013/08/23/capcom-says-currently-no-plans-for-monster-hunter-4-on-playstation-vita/

Either buy a 3DS or move onto to another series.

  • porkiewpyne

    And by the looks of it, he’ll be needing a Japanese one at that. Unless they decide to localise it. Cmon Bamco, I have faith ;O;

  • TheExile285

Why does everyone keep acting like MH4 won’t get localized?

And Capcom makes MH. Namco makes God Eater.

  • cloudcaelum

I can wait, we got Toukiden, God Eater 2, Disgaea 4… i can live with that but MH is best if you got friend with play, so will wait and i know will come, you’ll see…

  • XypherCode

    Uhh..where are the admins…?

  • porkiewpyne

Oops typo. Why did I type Bamco :P

Well, I suppose it’s partially because given the strong push with MH atm, I was expecting it to be announced sooner if they wanted to keep the hype train going? And I’ll never assume that Capcom will localise a game until it is actually released. But that’s just me.

  • PreyMantis

Yeah… It will come like MH3, which is never.
