Bravely Default: Flying Fairy has a new title in Europe—Bravely Default: Where the Fairy Flies. Nintendo of Europe have the game listed under its new title on their press site, along with what appear to be new screenshots. Check them out below this report.

Bravely Default: Where the Fairy Flies will be released in North America in 2014 and in Europe sometime this year. When Siliconera asked whether Nintendo will be publishing the expanded version of the game, they declined to comment.

That’s one step closer to making an ounce of sense to a normal person!

  • Solomon_Kano

I don’t know that making it longer made it make anymore sense, so I’ll have to say I prefer the original.

    • $36598391

so what is this, a sequel?

      • Auvers

this is just the english title for the european release. the expanded version isn’t a sequel it’s just got extra stuff in it.

      • Solomon_Kano

What Auvers said. This is just a name change for the localization.

  • Pockystix

Aw, the subtitle lost the hidden message :/

    • Malon

I read this everywhere, stop tinkling my curiosity. :(

    • No it didn’t? If your referencing a certain potential spoiler anyways

      • Pockystix

        oohh, you’re right, it’s just different now. . . same meaning, just now. . . slightly different~

        • GH56734

It’s one excellent translation. With zero Engrish and 100% of the message of the original. I don’t see what’s wrong with this. In fact I love this title!
It doesn’t need to follow a naming pattern with two words when localized like other common RPGs, like, say, “Final Fantasy”, since it’s not FF anyways… We need more original, inspired titles in the RPG market than your regular generic fare..
Now I’m hyped for this so even more, it’s set to be a stellar localization for a stellar game.

          • Solomon_Kano

Can we even call it a translation though? The title was already in English, even on the Japanese box art.

There was literally nothing to translate “Bravely Default: Flying Fairy” to. It’s like Final Fantasy, in that there’s nothing that necessitates a change.

          • GH56734

My bad, I meant “localization” instead of “translation”. I can’t really explain without committing the crime that is spoiling the plot of this masterpiece. (I tried in my previous post above)
But to put it bluntly, the original subtitle has another beautifully done interpretation that doesn’t quite work without sounding like Engrish. The Nintendo localizers got wind of this and reworked it slightly to made it fit perfectly all the while sounding like normal English (with correct word order and whatsnot).

          • Solomon_Kano

Oh? Guess it’ll make more sense once I’ve played the game, then. Thanks for not spoiling it.

  • Zero_Destiny

I kinda like it, sounds somewhat fancy to me. Long title is long though, still not really anything Atlus length though, at least.

    • Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha VS Overly Long Title

Oops, silly me; forgot to add “Plus” at the end.

  • Randy Marsh

*sigh* Looks like I’ll be crossing the “Where the Fairy Flies” on the cover out with a Sharpie.

    • Sentsuizan_93

And ruin the boxart? Come on, it’s just a name. Using a sharpie to crossout a part of a title is a bit excessive

      • Randy Marsh

Perhaps I did go a little too extreme there my friend, but no sleep and no coffee makes Angry Randy come out occasionally. Perhaps I can just get my friend to send me a high quality scan of her Japanese cover and I could just print it out on the graphic design printer.

But seriously why the name change?

        • Sentsuizan_93

          *shrugs shoulders*
          Dunno. :|

        • GH56734

To remove Engrish while retaining the full meaning of the title. The care they put in localizing this title is beyond impressive. Essentially, that title hints at a *huge* plot point.
Which would be ruined if you were spoiled with its meaning.

          • Randy Marsh

*facepalm* I get what you are talking about now, I’m a total fool to forget about that! Keeping my lips sealed on this, hate to see you guys on here go all Gematsu community on me if I accidentally spilled it out.

    • Guest

At least we got a physical release… RIGHT ACE ATTORNEY 5??

  • Sentsuizan_93

As long as it comes over, I don’t really care for name changes. Although this seems quite cool

    • Yeah who gives a flying fairy about the subtitle as long as we can play it.

      • Kelohmello

        I like you

      • Ahmad Reyner Nabeel

But still its name is still too long I think… And yeah, as long as we can play, it doesn’t matter anymore right? :P

  • epndkempot

    BD: WTF F

    • Erikdayo

Bondage & Discipline: What the Flying Fuck?

To be honest, the original non-sensical title was fine. Why make it longer?

      • GH56734

Simply because it wasn’t non-sensical. And the name change was your regular Engrish clean-up.

        • Solomon_Kano

          Flying Fairy wasn’t Engrish though…

If anything, you’d think they’d have changed Bravely Default since, apart from having gameplay systems by that name, that title doesn’t make any logical sense in English.

          • raitouniverse

Flying Fairy sounded goofy and abrupt, Where the fairy flies at least adds a poetic punch to it as a subtitle.

          • Solomon_Kano

Abrupt, I can agree on. Dunno that I’d say goofy.

      • epndkempot

        Nintendo of Europe happens

        • AuraGuyChris

They did that with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team too.
Just in case “Team” doesn’t sound brotherly enough, it’s called “Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros” over there.

    • why wtf?

      • Bobby Jennings

        Where the Fairy

    • I’m laughing so hard of your avatar :D

  • kiu

Oh the European date got shifted? I thought it was originally 2013?

  • awat

been waiting for this game for so long Come to the states already.

  • RablaAndrews

Man, they fixed the wrong part of the name. We know what a Flying Fairy is, guys, how about explaining why our default something is so brave.

    • GH56734

According to the producer Tomoyo Asano, the Bravely Default means “Have courage and renounce the promises and responsibilities that are expected of you. In other words, don’t just blindly do what you’re told, act according to your will”. This is the core theme behind the game’s scenario.

It’s like these comedy parts where one Chinese person says one word and it’s translated as a tirade, except this is real-life.

And actually they fixed the most directly related part of the title to the game… a simple Engrish fix (It’s not like “Flying Fairy” isn’t Engrish, and there’s more to that when you play the actual thing)

      • Kelohmello

Eh? Flying Fairy isn’t engrish though. That’s a perfectly sensible string of words.

  • Ahmad Reyner Nabeel

Still prefer the original one… Because it’s too long

  • AndyLC

It’s Europe so, if you say the name in French:
Bravement défaut: Lorsque la fée vole

    • School Idol Addict

You know flying fairy translate to fée volante not Lorsque la fée vole.
Shouldn’t it be Bravement défaut: Fée Volante ?

And if you mean the new titles it should be Bravement défaut: La ou les fées vole.

    • SaveTheDay

Nein, it would be “Wo fliegt die fee” if my basic skills in german are correct. ^^

      • Raccoon

No, with that word order it would rather be a question like in English (“Where flies the fairy?”) :-)

Correct translation in german is “Wo die Fee fliegt”. But with the typical subtitle naming conventions here we will probably get something far more stupid :-/

    • Vi

Wacker Vorgabe is a little too colloquial there, “Tapferer Standard: Wo die Fee fliegt” would be formal enough for a title.
But eh, what I’m saying, “Bravely Default” is a weird term from the start anyway., so translating it into other languages would only hardly make it any better.

    • GH56734

I don’t think they can translate the title to these languages without dropping the hidden message ..
I don’t think there’s a word that combines “mentir” and “voler” in French. Maybe they will do a name change for one thing in-game as “Firma” (like they’re used to in French localizations) and just say “Le Firmament où Flottent (volent?) les Fées”? (extra points for keeping the initials)
But then it would be incredibly obvious.

Bravement Défaut is incredibly “Engrishy” French, even more than that horrible Ys Origins intro.

  • Matthew Brannock

they changed the wrong half of the title

  • porkiewpyne

They can rename it Bravely Default: Cows Go Moo for all I care. I’m just beyond happy that this pretty game is coming to the West :3

  • TheExile285

I hope they don’t change the title for NA.

    • I hope so too. I mean I don’t see why they would lol

  • Chim_era

“When Siliconera asked whether Nintendo will be publishing the expanded version of the game, they declined to comment.Read more at

So that means no, you aren’t getting that version :p

    • Arcana Wiz

:P at leat we’re getting it, but it would be nice to have the newer version,or at least a dlc later.

  • Pfft. Bwahahahahaha XD That title. It doesn’t “FLY” too well in my opinion lol

    • NintendoPSX

Your profile picture is very appropriate for what you said.

  • Detrimont

i dont care what other people say, i like the new title

    • Arcana Wiz

you know haters gonna hate, but glad that we are getting this.

  • Ban The Jackass

I just want it localised. FAST.

  • Anthony Hayball

Better then the other Square Enix crap.

  • sd28

looks like they changed the wrong part

  • Musashi234

Oh course they Declined to comment.

  • laurenhiya21

Well… I guess it’s not too bad. I prefer the original myself but w/e. I’m actually more surprised that they didn’t change the Bravely Default part instead.

  • DyLaN

Both titles sounds OK to me.

  • puchinri

Huh. So does that title relate back as well as FF does to the story?

I certainly hope we get to keep the Flying Fairy subtitle. If not, I hope we at least get the expanded version where the title is already dropped anyway.

  • delmar

I could careless about the title. Those screen shots of the world map…the town…my pants got tight. Why Square? Why can’t you re-visualize ff I-VI like this? Why did you make the remaster FF V look like caca?
