Soulcalibur 2 HD Online Will Let You Play As Both Spawn And Heihachi

By Ishaan . August 29, 2013 . 11:30am

Soulcalibur 2 HD Online is headed to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this fall, and Namco Bandai have confirmed that both Tekken’s Heihachi and Todd McFarlane’s Spawn will be available on both consoles.

The original Soulcalibur 2 featured Heihachi as a playable character on PlayStation 2, Spawn on the Xbox, and Link on the Nintendo GameCube. While Link is obviously not an option, this is the first time both Spawn and Heihachi will both be available on the same console.

You can find the latest screenshots for the game, including a few of Spawn and Heihachi, below.

Yet the more than popular Link can’t even get a Wii U release. Thanks Namco.

    • Suicunesol

It’s even weirder because Namco Bandai is actually helping to develop SSBU, so it’s not like their relationship with Nintendo is lacking.

      • Spirit Macardi

That’s Namco logic for ya’. If you want to understand their thought process yourself, just drink a can of lead-based paint.

        • Pdugna

or you know their products do not sell as much on nintendo products, but they are friends with Sakurai and want to help… i mean if relationships meant jack for alot of these companies RE wouldnt have left sony and most of the fighting games known wouldnt have left sony either.

          • Spirit Macardi

“Don’t sell as much on Nintendo products”?

Umm… Soul Calibur 2 on Gamecube wasn’t just the best selling version of that game, it was also the best selling in the entire series. Tales of Symphonia on GC also remains the most successful entry in that franchise.

Of course most of their recent games have gotten bad sales on Nintendo consoles, but that’s because the games themselves sucked. We Cheer, Pac-Man Party, Tank Tank Tank… Maybe they could try releasing good games on Nintendo hardware again before making a decision to abandon them.

          • neo_firenze

I was with you right up to the point where you said Tank! Tank! Tank! sucked… LIES, I tell you. I’ve probably had more fun with that game than anything else I’ve played so far on my launch day Wii U…

          • Spirit Macardi

The game still got pretty low review scores, and having played it myself I happen to agree with those reviews.

          • HIROYUKIMKII

But that is wrong, it sold better then the other 2 versions, but not by much. Even Following Soul caliburs sold more then that one version. Please dont Fanboy blindly

          • Spirit Macardi

I’m merely stating information I’ve read myself. And everything I’ve read has stated that SC2 on GC sold incredibly well.

          • Pdugna

tales of graces sold like shit on Wii sold alot better on ps3 tales of xillia also the ps2 version of Symphonia sold half the amount of the GC version and that was only in japan if it was released in america it wouldve dominated the GC version.

          • AkuLord3

Well to be fair, the Audience in America for the Tales series was pretty low when Symphonia came out when we only had like…1 or 2 games. Not saying you be wrong (especially since the Ps2 version had more content) we can only guess besides…Graces did well on the Wii better than Vesperia did on the 360~

          • Spirit Macardi

Now you’re not even using evidence, you’re speaking in terms of “ifs.” And I’m sorry, but if ToS on PS2 couldn’t even catch up to the GC version in Japan, then it’s unlikely it would have done so here where the series is more niche.

And yeah, Graces on PS3 sold better than on the Wii. But again, it was an inferior product when released on Nintendo (which, again, was my point) since it was notoriously bug-ridden. A reputation like that is a good way to kill sales.

Sorry, but it really seems like Namco themselves are the ones harming the relationship, not Nintendo.

    • Chaos_Knight

If only there was a Wii U version, maybe we could have Heihachi vs Link.

  • EdgeKun

Safe to assume Necrid is playable then as well, yes?

    • VenerableSage

Most likely. I would imagine that Necrid was honestly the reason that Spawn’s back – Namco likely wanted Necrid to maintain the regular roster and while they were asking, they probably asked about Spawn too.

    • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

They announced necrid on the same day SC 2 HD was unveiled. So we have Heihachi, Spawn and Necrid yay~

  • https://twitter.com/Panda_castro Panda

Nice. Never got to play as Heihachi since I had the xbox version.

  • AkuLord3

Besides the OBVIOUS comment that many people will say…i want to say! that getting the chance to use Spawn again is a surprise (even though i never played the xbox version). I figure because of copyrights, they just have Heihachi but nope, so that’s that’s cool

    • Pdugna

Well Todd is actually pretty good on letting spawn being used in games he like.

      • AkuLord3

Huh what do you know…that’s a neat thing to learn

    • Sergio Briceño

Is the obvious comment a bad comment? Sorry, it’s not so obvious to me. Has it been commented already?

      • AkuLord3

Its not exactly a “bad” comment, just something people will say alot that even though i wish would happen, it will be annoying to keep seeing. Let’s just say SC2 has 3 versions with their own guest character and we only have the 2 but not the big popular one from Nintendo

        • Sergio Briceño

Oooohhh! So that was what you meant. To be honest, it still beats the original as having 2 out of 3 exclusive characters is better than just having 1.

  • Shadowman

A chance to play Spawn again it’s an childhood nostalgia moment all over again!! WOOOOOOO!!!!

  • Dianatos

Does anyone know if this will be rebalanced, or will it play exactly like how it did before?

  • Sardorim

Those poor characters. If only they knew what awaits them in SC V.

They were so young and innocent…

    • 하세요

My Talim ; ; I miss my WIND WIND WIND WIND

      • Chaos_Knight

I miss my waifu, Talim. :c

        • 하세요

I just loved her weapons. Xianghua was always my choice in terms of “waifu.” I have a thing for the Chinese.

      • Sardorim

My poor Cassandra, Hwang, and Seong Mi-na too…. I also wanted to see an adult Talim.

      • Linhua

… yeah, not gonna lie… I was DEVASTATED when I learned my little dual-wielder wasn’t gonna be showing up in the next Soul Calibur.

… to me, this was the best version of her.

… I wasn’t quite fond of part 3′s Talim and ended up playing with Xianghua and Taki more… but then that switched back around in part four… more Talim, less Taki… still the same amount of Xianghua and then a lot more than normal Seung Mina.

… I had always been telling my friends how I couldn’t wait to see how different they were gonna make Talim in the next Soul Calibur… secretly hoping they’d run her back to the SCII days with a whole lot of moves…

… and here I just never saw a twenty-somethin’ swoosh to the future coming… I thought, okay… Talim’s gonna be all grown up… not exactly what I wanted for my favorite Loli of the game, but… fine. Let’s see…

… and then well… poof. She simply was too old for the game… = … and left ol’ Woody behind in the toy box.

        /Rant

        .-. S-sorry ’bout that..

    • Shippoyasha

No dignity to even get character specific stages or music and no opening and ending cinematics in arcade mode. At least SC5 has an amazing netcode and character creation..

  • fairysun

Back when Soul Calibur is one of the best weapon-fighting game ……

    • HIROYUKIMKII

And it still is the best weapon based fighting game, its also the only one in the market. Pro communities agree then SC5 is has the best systems for the Series too

      • leingod

It leaves a lot to be desired content and character wise, though :/

        • Suicunesol

I think it makes up for it with its character creator.

  • Ronldbx6

pretty cool, I never got to try spawn because I had the ps2 version.

  • Kirbichu

I’m guessing they’ll have to make a new character select screen then, unless Spawn and Heihachi would take up the same space…

    • Hunts Rattata

There was a random select button they could get rid of, right? Just map random to a button press instead.

  • $61526767

Never got to play the Xbox version, so i will be happy to play as spawn as with my favorite main: Kilk.

  • dragoon_slayer12

So where’s the WiiU/3ds version with all 3 exclusives? That’s definitely worth owning either or console (and would definitely buy a WiiU for that). Link was the best of the 3,and possible the best character in every SC game

    • 하세요

Certainly not in terms of effectiveness. He’s actually the worst SC character ever. Ridiculously easy to punish his moves.

      • Ixbran

though despite this, Link is the one guest character that fans always ask to come back the most. Not to mention in a poll that was held when SCII came out, the game cube version won the category of best guest character.

sure in terms of playability Link wasnt the highest, but hes still considered one of the best, and most iconic, guest characters the SC series has ever had.

        • sagakarikikkaru

Really? He worked wonders for me in performance.

      • Kaihedgie

People didn’t buy the Gamecube version just to win (despite having the best Ultimate Weapon), people bought it because of Link and nothing else.

    • artemisthemp

I would presume the reason WIi U didn’t get a version was either 1. Possible sales wouldn’t justify development require to make a Wii U port or 2. Nintendo wouldn’t allow Namco to use Link in PS3/Xbox 360 version and Namco didn’t want to give Wii U version 1 exclusive character.

      • dragoon_slayer12

#2 is obvious. But it kind of sucks though, cuz of the 3,Link was definitely my favorite.

  • Ixbran

a WiiU port of this game to include Link is inevitable, so I’ll just wait for that version so i can have all three guest characters at once.

  • Touma

-sees theres no link and spills cup of care- well crap.

  • Warboss Aohd

    Spawn iz orkiest

  • Suicunesol

Actually, now that I think about it, a Wii U version with Link might have not been as possible as I thought. There may have been a bit of politics here with Namco not wanting to make multiple versions of the game like before, and Nintendo not wanting Link to show up on PS3 or Xbox. It would have been Link’s first debut on Playstation, and Nintendo certainly doesn’t want that. Additionally, it might have been unfair to Sony for a Nintendo version to get all three characters while PS3 and XBox only get two. Namco might not want to sour relations with Sony like that.

  • Repede91

I wonder who wins in the Spawn vs. Heihachi matchup?

  • Chee Yang

While we all wish, the developers are having fun playing all 3 guest characters at their office.

  • sagakarikikkaru

This is nice and all. But the only reason I still have Soul Calibur 2 on my gamecube is Link… It’s all about Link…
