You’ll Get Bulbasaur, Charmander And Squirtle In Pokémon X And Pokémon Y

By Ishaan . September 4, 2013 . 4:35am

In most Pokémon RPGs, you get your starter Pokémon from the game’s Pokémon Professor. However, this won’t be the case in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, Nintendo and Game Freak shared in a Nintendo Direct presentation this morning.

In Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, you’ll receive your starter Pokémon from one of your friends within the game. As previously detailed, X and Y’s choice of starters are Chespin, Fennekin and Froakie. Once you choose one of these three Pokémon, you’ll begin your journey.

However, you’ll also get another Pokémon from Professor Sycamore, the professor in X and Y. Sycamore will allow you to choose one of the three original starters from Pokémon Red/Blue—Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. Additionally, all three of them will have their very own Mega Evolutions in the game as well.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y will be released on October 12th worldwide. You can watch this morning’s Pokémon Nintendo Direct in its entirety below. It includes the above mentioned details as well as the newly-announced Pokémon Bank service.

  • Shadowman

    Nostalgia OVERLOAD!!

  • Chris Yuen

    Best gen.

  • Symbol de Au

    Rumors are correct again.

    • Aaronrules380

Yeah, was one of my first thoughts as well. Those pokebeach rumors have pretty much all come true. Which means perhaps we should prepare for another version of mewtwo beyond mega mewtwo

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

Honestly I was insanely surprised and absolutely delighted.
If you take into account that there is a free Torchic distribution when the game launches you can essentially have one of every type of starter Pokemon at the beginning of XY (if you want to ofc).

The Mega evolutions of Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise have yet to grow on me though but they aren’t terrible by any means.

    • Aemette

The worst, part in my case, is that my favorite Pokemon is Torchic, I was gonna pick Fennekin in X, and Charizard is part flying type so I was gonna pick Charmander :( A team of all fire types it is then.

    • Steven Higgins

I’m gonna go with all Fire types.
      Fennikin is adorable
      Mega Charizard is awesome
Water Gym will kick my butt.

    • s07195

Orz, I’ll be in China for university so I presumably get the game/ distribution when it comes out.

    • Sergio Briceño

Except I don’t think there will be many people not picking Charmander… Mega Blastoise looks beast though.

      • Zeik56

Squirtle has always been cooler than Charmander.

        • Sergio Briceño

Yeah, always my choice. But generally speaking, the community likes Charizard’s design a lot better than Blastoise’s… Now with the mega evolutions it may be another story.

      • Castanedaa99

Squirtle’s always been my little man…i mean turtle. So to level him up to Blastoise is gonna be awesome!

  • Rayshawn Davis

I can get Charmander in this game!? And Mega Charizard!!! That’s it! Fine! You win Game-Freak! I’m officially back on Pokemon now Geez! Alright wallet, assume the position!

    • Sardorim

This is indeed great news! Charizard was always my favorite, now he’s taken himself to the next level of evolution! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA~!!!!

    • Kai2591

      Summon Wallet!

    • Vash bane

      wallet use payday

  • Syn

Am assuming if Blaziken is getting a mega form, and all 3 original starters….. I feel its only correct to assume that all the Gen 3 starters are likely to get Mega forms as well…Give me Mega Swampert gamefreak, and you can rape my wallet all you want!!!!

    • Zeik56

I hope gen 2 doesn’t get left out. Mega Feraligatr could be pretty badass.

      • Syn

TBH, all the starters should get mega forms, that would be simply perfect…..*dreams of mega Typhlosion* ^-,^

        • Zeik56

Honestly what I want most is to see Mega Serperior with Dragon typing.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Wow this game just keeps on giving <3

  • Be cool if they let you choose Hoenn starters after completing a task like they did in heart gold and soul silver, maybe even sinnoh too.

  • Arcana Wiz

i’m a boy but i let out so many fangirl squeals…….
i’ll probably pick the fire fox and my bulba, hype meter broke.

  • I was hoping for more from that Pokémon Direct, such as new Pokémon and maybe more on the new Fairy type. Ah well. Knowing I can get one of the original starter Pokémon pleases me. Now my friends might actually enjoy Pokémon for the first time in ages. Blastoise is THE favourite for one of my friends. As for me, now I can get Mega Charizard as well as Mega Blaziken. Fire type overload, here I come!

  • LunarKnite

Just gotta say one thing: HAND CANNONS!

  • KingRuff

All I want is MEGA MEGANIUM! The ultimate mega pokemon.

    • Herok♞

there was a Chikorita and Piplup on the shelf with a Torchic in the direct so I will take that as subtle confirmation.

      • Koibito888

        Half life 3 confirmed.

  • Anime10121

All of my YES! Finally throwing the OG Pokemon back in the spotlight!

  • leingod

Love ’em classic starters! In fact, I’d rather get two of those instead of the new ones :P

Squirtle and Fennekin are definitely gonna be my team of choice this gen!

  • Jesse Torres

Can I call this the best Pokemon game ever?

  • AuraGuyChris

Way to make our Gen 6 starter lineup look squat with the first deals getting new stuff…and appearing earlier instead of just doing a dex-filling sidequest.
Sorry, Squirtle, but I’m canning you till I beat the game. I only want Gen 6 Pokémon in my party.

  • Still want my Fennekin =^_^=

    • You avi makes me apprehensive of what you will do when you have a Fennekin. ><

  • GuyAlpha

Pretty cool Mega Evolutions. I like how they just expanded on what made the third evolutions evolutionary.

  • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

    I am getting
    Fennekin and Squirtle.

I normally choose are fire type.

  • Foryth

    Bulba-Bulbasaur! You’ve always been my favorite. :3

  • Action replay you will be my best friend this gen lol

    • i will have all the starters then upload them to the bank action replay you will be my best friend lol

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

You;re not allowed to do that

        • how do you know i’m not?

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Because the app will brick your system if you do that

          • okay no let me ask you this how do you know the app will show me your proof.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Gamefreak reviles crackers

  • SlickRoach

Well, Gen 1 fanboys should be lightening up to the game now. I can’t imagine how powerful I’ll be with 2 starters of different types though o.o

  • Presea

Yeah double starters in the beginning of the game! This is fantastic news!

    • Suicunesol

I think they become available later in the game, actually. Isn’t that what they said?

      • Steven Higgins

When they said “Later” I’m pretty Sure they meant “Later than normal” or “Soon after you choose your Kalos starter” I’m pretty sure it will still be close to the beginning of the game, otherwise they wouldn’t have announced. IIRC, they never announced that you can choose Kanto starters after beating the Elite Four the first time when HG/SS was released.

        • Suicunesol

True. But they did announce it this time because there was something to announce with their reveal–their Mega Forms. Surely people would want to know if Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle were obtainable in-game if they knew they were getting Megas.

I just thought “later”, like around mid-game, because getting two starters at the beginning of the game would make things too easy.

          • Steven Higgins

I can’t really see a Professor not giving you starters until mid-game unless he was from a different region.

Think of it like this. A Professors job is to equip new trainers with their first Pokemon. Using this logic, one could say that Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle are the TRUE Kalos starters, while Chespin, Fennikin and Froakie are the bonus starters even though you get one of them first.
Sycamore not giving us starters until mid-game would be paramount to shirking his duties.

Plus, with the addition of Hoard battles you may need two starters to be prepared.

          • Koibito888

Plus say it was mid game. By then you’d already have so many powerful Pokemon that a starter would not matter in the slightest. It’s probably for horde battles like you said. It’ll be early, just in the same town as you start in most likely.

      • Presea

        I thought they meant later as in right after you get one of the X and Y starters and go meet the professor, but I could still be wrong. ^^;

        • Suicunesol

I don’t think so. That would be toooo easy. >_<

          • Chris Yuen

The Direct says that your group of friends will give you your X/Y starter, while the professor will go “why don’t you take another one?” later when you meet up with him at the lab.

          • Suicunesol

            I see. Thanks.

That is weird. >_> Why so early…

          • Zeik56

Doesn’t sound that different than what they did with the monkeys in Black/White, even if gen 1 starters are better Pokemon.

          • Steven Higgins

            For Hoard Battles I’m guessing.
Then you have at least 2 Pokemon when you encounter your first Hoard.

  • Dust Huynh

  • Anesia Hunter

Because we’re able to transfer our Pokemon from 5th gen games, I can’t wait to learn the base stats on Sylveon, so I can start working on breeding an Eevee that’ll evolve into one.

  • Brandon Morais

GUYS DON”T FORGET about the Torchic we’ll be getting over WiFi!

  • What’s with the “I know, right?” Ick too US-colloquial.

  • puchinri

You will be mine again, Bulbasaur.
But yay, yeah, this is great news~! October cannot come soon enough.

  • $36598391

Way to cover weaknesses, I’d go with the new Fire type starter and Bulbasaur hehe

  • zaidandzhadow

Fuck that when i could get two different types for starte pokemons the only one who look good are fire type both, shit.

  • Kai2591

I think I’ll choose squirtle this time around…

  • tobi

Charizard and Froakie here I come.

  • Koibito888

It’s so tough to decide! I’m already getting Froakie as my first starter, that’s for sure. Funny though that with the Torchic from the event, we are able to have three starters. Kinda awesome.

  • artemisthemp

So you get 3 Starter in this game.
    1. X/Y Starter
    2. Red/Blue Starter
    3. Chorchick
