Age Of Amazones Introduces Its All-Female Cast Of Ninjas And Soldiers

By Eugene . September 6, 2013 . 4:30pm

More information on Arc System Works’s Age of Amazones for the Nintendo 3DS has been released by 4Gamer. The game features you as a prisoner on an all-woman prison planet looking to get to a ship to escape offplanet. On the way, various allies will be joining the main character Gantai, on her quest to escaping.

We previously mentioned the game’s AP (Action Points) and Battery battle system, which are resources players have to manage during fights to dish out attacks and special moves respectively. Players will have to fight through various dungeons, clearing the bosses in each, to advance the game and head to the next area in the overland map. Specific story and side-events will litter the dungeon, with an exclamation mark on the bottom touch screen map.

During battle, Battery powers will be especially useful, but hard to replenish. In order to regenerate some of that Battery power, players will have to swap characters out for other allies or use special skills to refill the guage.

The full character lineup has also been announced, including previously mentioned Gantai and Kunoichi. The game is scheduled for release on November 14th.

026

Gantai:

Weapons: Handguns and army knives

Character: Fastidious and not prone to smiles, but with a nervous side. She’s the typical soldier model who appears cool and calculated but can be hot-blooded as well. She excels at tactics and strategy but is not overly enthused by battle or futile quarrels. She was captured after joining a rebellion against the government and sent to the prison planet.

Underneath her eye-patch, lies a gold-colored implanted eye that has a mysterious power known as the King’s Eye.

Shin Iri:

Weapons: Explosives

Character: A lively kid, her clumsy exterior hides her true twisted personality inside. Snide comments are waiting to burst out, as she has been oppressed since a young age and has come to disbelieve in Mankind. The only person she loves is Gantai.

Queen:

Weapons: Katanas and a folding fan

Character: A short-tempered, prideful and confident woman, she nonetheless has a big sister streak a mile wide in her. While she is able to maintain a degree of control over herself, she nonetheless has a weakness to have a good time herself on occasion. As hot-blooded as Gantai, she’s the sort who laughs while cutting down her foes.

029

Kunoichi:

Weapons: Kunais, short swords, smoke grenades and other ninja paraphernalia

Character: While Kunoichi does her best to present a cool facade, she usually has trouble keeping this up as her shy nature often gets the best of her. She admires ninjas and even forces herself to speak like one by using older Japanese words, which she sometimes forgets and lets her normal speech take over, followed by being the butt end of the joke by the others. She’s actually a conscious of her wide forehead.

030

Maria:

Weapons: Sniper rifles

Character: Calm, gentle and dignified, she has extremely bad eyesight. She wears a chain attached to her glasses to keep them on during battle. She has a secret past that she keeps to herself, which is also what influences her greatly sensitive view on the importance of life.

031

Hime:

Weapons: Machine guns, chain guns, grenade launchers

Character: Unable to sit still, she takes an interest in everything but loses interest just as quickly. While extremely selfish, her cute nature endears her to everyone. She acts brave outside, but she’s really a crybaby, and she switches her opinions as quickly as a rolling stone, just like the kid she really is.

    woot

    all female RPG lol

  • Leon_Tekashi

Inb4, crap happens like with Senran Kagura. *grabs the popcorn* Either way, this game looks awesome so far. I got my eye on this.

    • British_Otaku

What do you mean by that?

If you mean a worldwide release, standard length anime adaptation, plenty of merchandise and a healthy amount of sequels and cameos. Brilliant.

I got the feeling you meant something bad happened with Senran Kagura which will repeat itself here… I’m missing the point aren’t I?

I agree on you have your eye on this, and say that I have my eye out for a demo to prove it’s worth anyway. >_>

      • Leon_Tekashi

Let me give you the nutshell: Blah blah blah sexism blah blah blah controversy, blah blah blah bitch bitch bitch. That’s about it.

        • British_Otaku

          I see. The controversy factor…

For whatever reason, I get the feeling that Senran Kagura is just might slip by like a ninja, people have been surprisingly quiet about it so far.

I could be wrong and the game gets torn off shelves in Europe, but yeah.

          • InfectedAI

Lesser known series equals less attention to it. Pokemon got all sorts of controversy, but have you heard a peep about the Megaten series in mainstream media?

        • Strain42

Oh, I thought you were implying it would be like Senran Kagura in the sense that it’s a completely mediocre looking game that is selling itself solely on over the top gratuitous eye roll inducing fanservice that for some reason people get oddly defensive about.

In which case I would have disagreed with you, because that’s clearly true for Senran Kagura, but this game doesn’t seem nearly as extreme in that department.

          • CirnoTheStrongest

Probably because it’s ASW handling it. I expect a really amazing story in this.

          • British_Otaku

ASW have probably done some pretty poor stories too.

Back in the day, I was hyped for Okamiden, between it had Yukinori Kitajima (the writer of a 40/40 visual novel called “428″) behind it plus being related to Okami in any sort of way makes me double dip and buy limited editions (not so much now). The story didn’t make sense at all, it didn’t expand on the factors we wanted full closure for and the game was overall a weaker experience hampered with worse execution and a pretty poor translation.

One thing which may surprise you is that this 40/40 guy was also the same writer as both 3DS Senran Kagura games as his (?) company Synthese (synthese.jp/english.html ) get contracted to (co-)write all sorts of games, novels and documentaries with contacts which include Capcom, SEGA, Chunsoft, Spike (?), Chunsoft (so they could be writing this game going off the past?), Squeenix, Bamco, Level 5, NHK (yes the channel) and Marvelous AQL.

It’s quite possible for great writers to phone it in or not put their full effort in. Even for ASW to phone it in as far as mechanics go, as with Supersonic Warriors 2, don’t say that it was bad because of the license, it was bad because they forgot everything good about the original title (one of the best DBZ games methinks).

Senran Kagura has a pretty decent story if you ask me… >_> Perhaps too much story focus, you spend more time with the characters absorbing their thoughts and all, then a sequence with 3D models which seems to be shallow at points (I can hear it and call out things to a degree) then with great to battle in our character who may or may not get hit enough to enjoy fanservice which can be skipped over the sparkles of combat.

          • CirnoTheStrongest

Well, I haven’t been able to play Senran, but it looked pretty great from what I’ve seen of it. I really enjoyed the anime, though it had a slow start. So I’m sure I’d enjoy the games too.

And, yeah, of course it isn’t guaranteed to be amazing. That’s never something you can guarantee. It can always suck.

But, sometimes you can be confident that it’ll turn out great, and that’s how I feel with this. I’m a bit sad it’s on the 3DS, since we’ll be banking on a localization to be able to play it. Well, unless you get an import 3DS.

          • British_Otaku

Of course, by Arc System Works’ performance for Supersonic Warriors, Blazblue, Guilty Gear and Persona 4 Arena, I also have some confident in these guys…

Not enough to say that this new IP will have good writing when it isn’t in the same genre as a previous ASW game (especially one with a great narrative).

I could import this, but I’m banking on a localisation too… Importing is expensive and I felt a little odd when got the Japanese version of BB:CS2 on the 3DS as my introduction to the series… >_> Partly as it made the surprisingly heavy story nearly completely inaccessible (Arcade and the rest were fun though).

I want to make Senran Kagura’s anime one of the next shows I watch… but I’m putting it off till next year probably… Too much of a backlog everywhere else.

          • InfectedAI

I dunno, there’s a nun with her breasts hanging out with a belt strap covering the nipples. That’s a tiny bit extreme.

          • Strain42

True, but that’s kinda why I said it wasn’t AS extreme. Unlike Senran Kagura, this game doesn’t seem to be showcasing itself as “COME LOOK AT OUR SEXY CHARACTER’S BOOBS!” from what we see here the game itself isn’t trying to be sexy, and most (not all) of these characters seem fairly tame on the fanservice side of things.

I don’t mind a little titillation here and there, but some games go too far with it in my opinion. I’m actually pretty hopeful about this game. So far it seems to be “Hey, come look at our game, it’s a normal game that just happens to have an all female cast.” Sure some are a bit sexed up, but the game doesn’t seem to be using that fact to advertise itself, and that’s something I personally appreciate.

          • InfectedAI

I think you’re downplaying how sexed up the game is. It may not be the main focus, but it’s definitely there.

        • SlickRoach

Remembering the drama of Dragon’s Crown it seems as if this game may come under fire too, the sniper nun with the belt strap bra looks like she might be worth a Kotaku article herself. :-/

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

Looks pretty fun, that map looks kind of like Etrian Odyssey, so dungeon crawler I take it. What’s with all these games that are only girls only cast lately though? I mean I don’t mine playing as female characters (some of my favorite characters are female Alicia, Estelle etc) That question isn’t aimed at this game in particular (Its called Age of Amazons after all). Its to appeal to a specific demographic though I guess.

  • CirnoTheStrongest

Man….this cast I can get behind!!

  • leingod

I like Maria’s sense of style.

  • AkiraScare

Localization? Plz say it will be (0_0)

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

It will definitely happen. Most of their games are localize on 3DS, DS, DSiware and 3DSware

      • InfectedAI

There are enough left out for their to be concern.

      • http://jesse-dylan.livejournal.com Jesse_Dylan

Yay! I hope so. And I hope it doesn’t suck.

      • AkiraScare

Now must wait… for like two years for localization… (-_-)

    • http://www.senran-international.boards.net/ TwinTails

Aksys will most likely be the ones to bring it over.

  • http://www.senran-international.boards.net/ TwinTails

    A nun with a gun = my waifu. ^_^

  • Milton Martinez

nice arc system is trying something else besides fighters… hope to get my hands on this soon.

    • InfectedAI

Arc does a lot more than fighters, but those games tend to stay in Japan.

  • ShadowDivz

all girl cast. if there isnt atleast one loli, then your doing it wrong.

    • CirnoTheStrongest

And that’s why they have Hime!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      yeah…..it must have a loli

    • Morricane

Actually it’s unusual if there’s a character who is not a loli. :)

  • SlickRoach

A sniper with extremely bad eyesight, what’s the worst that could happen?

    • DragKudo

For some reason that made her seem cooler than she is.

    • natchu96

Probably still has better aim than most of the COD crowd though.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

then you never seen black butler

      • Malon

I was about to say it.

  • wererat42

    Japanese-style character named Queen

Is that nun wearing a belt instead of a bra?

  • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

I want this! Shin Iri, Queen and Kunoichi appear to be my favourites, for now.

    • Morricane

Lol, the names are very…self-descriptive :)
      Like the “newcomer”.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    I want this…….

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

So……. this is getting localized when? :3

  • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

“The game features you as a prisoner” this is false, the game doesnt features YOU it features a female character called Gantai.

    I hate misleading articles.

    • Zero_Destiny

This is not really the time or place to get into a debate on the semantics of what makes a role playing experience, and narrative structures of games. Try to stay on topic here.

You were given a reminder about this just the other night. If it’s something you really wanna go gung-ho over that’s why we have our Open Thread for these kinds of discussions.

  • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, welp… at one point I went “hey a game of women on a prison planet doesn’t HAVE to be full of moe stereotypes, it can be deep like Orange is the New Black, or maybe even just interestingly written like Dangan Ronpa!”

    Oh, what a sweet summer-child I was…
