By Spencer . September 8, 2013 . 11:23pm

imageSega announced Phantasy Star Nova which takes place in the same world as Phantasy Star Online 2. It will be an offline game and sold in stores unlike PSO2. Players can connect together through ad-hoc play. The biggest surprise is tri-Ace is the developer of Phantasy Star Nova. Sega also showed a giant monster called Gigantes, which players will fight.

Phantasy Star Nova is slated for release in 2014.

We just want PSO2 localized dammit

  • Morricane

“A giant monster called Gigantes”…sounds very creative.
This sounds cool, maybe. I like PSO2.
And now I’ll go back to dreaming about either Phantasy Star 5 or a well-done remake of 2 or one of 4. :)

  • Chris Yuen

SEGA not bringing PSO2 over cuz they are planning to bring Nova over to us. Believe.

  • Reki Honoo

    Please localize.

  • QueenDecim

  • Cloud_ST

lol, “Gigantes” in Spanish means Giants.

  • Ferrick

    *sees title*
oh Phantasy star…. with the way pso2 is, this might not come here

    *sees developer*
HOLY SHIT, there might be a chance!

    • Solomon_Kano

If anything, you’ve got that the other way around. We never got Frontier Gate or Beyond the Labyrinth, but we’ve only missed 2 PS games in recent years, one on PSP and PSO2… well, who the hell knows what Sega’s doing there.

      • Ferrick

i’m not even sure on what’s the point of the western branch now lol

        • Solomon_Kano

          “NEW SONIC! WOOT!

Oh, and Hatsinu Muki or something. Whatevs.”

          • Ferrick

“Phantasy star? What’s that? We only know Sonic!”

          • Solomon_Kano

“Must have been a fantasy, if you thought we were gonna localize it!”

          • Ferrick

“wait, didn’t we announce it last year and made a website for it? … Naahhhhhh”

          • Solomon_Kano

            “That was… the other Sega.”

          • Ferrick

“the non sonic sega… yeah we don’t want to talk about it”

          • Solomon_Kano

“Stop looking at us like that. Stooooop.”

      • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Those were both Konami-produced, weren’t they? We know how Konami’s been treating their RPGs when it comes to the west :(

        • Solomon_Kano

They were indeed. To be fair, most of Konami’s recent RPGs (FG, FG+, Genso Suikoden) were on PSP. I understand them leaving those. Absolutely no excuse on Beyond the Labyrinth though.

  • Tenabrus

Oh great another new game I can never hope of getting localized.

  • klkAlexar

I missed Tri-Ace. Their games aren’t perfect but the gameplay is usually very fun.

  • Chaos_Knight

Still waiting for PSO2. *eye twitches*

    • Chiupon

just play JP ver. It’s basically been translated already.

      • Aristides

On Vita? Or if on PC how do you get to play it in English?

        • Barrylocke89

It would be on PC. The majority of the English has been translated by fangroups, so if you know what to google (not very hard) you should be able to find some answers.

  • So this is the continuation of Phantasy Star portable series from PSP? day one buy from me once it got localized?

    • Brandonmkii

I don’t know, really. Doesn’t make sense to make a “portable” title when PSO2 is already on the vita. If anything, it’s probably a spin-off single player RPG or something.

      • Solomon_Kano

That’s what it sounds like. It’s in the PSO2 universe and it’s just offline. So it’s like the offline mode that previous online PS games had, rather than a new Portable game.

    • Ferrick

no, different universe, this one follows the phantasy star online universe

  • Solomon_Kano

So this is where tri-Ace has been. Interesting.

    • Kai2591

been waiting for their comeback :)

      • Solomon_Kano

Same. Though now I have to wonder what, if anything, their next-gen engine is being used for…

        • Kai2591

          That too ;)

        • Testsubject909

          secret PS4 Q4 2014 game?

*starts to mentally check and see if they have any game which would be a sequel numbered 4*

          • Solomon_Kano

            Valkyrie Profile 4

Lots of possibilities. In the time since SO4, they’ve worked with Konami on two new IP and Sega on PS now, so we could see anything from them. They could do SO again, they could start up a new IP with a new publisher, we could see FG leap to consoles even.

            Interesting future ahead for tri-Ace.

  • leingod

Since this is not free, nor requires heavy duty servers… I can see it making it to the west. That’s good I guess :)

(…and maybe the publisher can add online later, as XSEED will do with Valhalla Knights 3)

  • Sentsuizan_93

    …And my interest has piqued.
    But western PSO2 release when?

    • AshSatoshi

For the west, not sure. But I do know that Southeast Asia is getting an English-language release of PSO2. By right, I think those in the west can register and play that version too. Hope this helps.

      • Aristides

Will it include the PC ver only or is the Vita ver included as well?

        • AshSatoshi

Only PC version and no PC disc version.

      • Jeffrey Thrash

If that is true, that will make my day. Even with the fierce language barrier, PSO2 is my favorite MMO right now, and I’ve been clamoring for an English release so that I can experience all that the game has to offer. Obviously, I’m a huge Sonic Team fan.

  • d19xx

Wow I feel so angry and happy at the same time.

I guess this is how crazy people start going nuts…

    • TheExile285

      Angry? Why?

      • FFmax

He/she probably wants another Star Ocean or Valkyrie Profile or PSO2 localized.

        • TheExile285

at least it isn’t a phone or browser game

      • Aristides

I feel kinda angry because It’s like… “Am I ever gonna get to play this????” it’s a depressing feeling being a fan of the classic PS games and PS Portable series.

        • TheExile285

I wouldn’t hold my breath about PSO2 but I think this has a chance of being localized. Sega might not do it but I could see Sony publishing this.

          • Aristides

Well I really hope you’re right! Sega has been… a complete let down as of late….

          • Lynx

Except Sega is really uptight about who localize their titles. I recall a few publishers say they looked into VC3 and Sega was like NOPE.

          • TheExile285

True, but I would hope Sony would have a little more push than a 3rd party.

SE is upright too but we are getting Bravely Default thanks to Nintendo.

          • Solomon_Kano

Unlike Sega and Sony, Nintendo’s been publishing select SE titles for a few years now.

          • TheExile285

True but Sony has that new Third Production group now and I can’t imagine everything localization from them being 1st party.

          • Solomon_Kano

Well, the Third-party Production group obviously won’t be doing 1st-party localizations lol, but that group’s success is dependent on a two-way agreement.

The publisher has to allow Sony to bring the game. They’re bigger than Xseed or whoever, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Sega will want them involved anymore than a smaller publisher.

Also keep in mind that that group is being run on fan demand, so if everybody doesn’t ask for Nova, they won’t try for it in the first place. Also, that they aren’t specifically for localizations. Considering what moves systems, that likely won’t even be the majority of their focus.

          • TheExile285

True. I’m just saying I think Sega might actually let Sony do if they asked. (Ignore the other post because i hit ENTER before i was done)

  • Long time no see Tri Ace. Can I has Star Ocean 5 please too? :3

    • WhyWai

Yes! I want a StarOcean too!

      • Yeah, it would be sweet if they made one for next gen.

    • Dexward

No, no. Not until Valkyrie Profile 3: Hrist.

      • NightzeroAX

        Why not both.

        • This lol^

        • Warboss Aohd

          Why Not Zoidberg?

      • Ah, our beloved Hrist we must have too. =)

  • eilegz

hopefully they dont take so long like pso2 on this one…

  • Elvick

    Want so bad.

  • michel

    Tri-Ace <3

This game has the potetial of being great, and, not least important, translated in English.

  • Since sega have no intention to localize PSO2 vita, I hope they will at least localize this

  • Zeonsilt

    Ahem.. :
    – Valkyria Chronicles 3(though,fan-translated atm)

    – Shining Hearts
    – Shining Blade
    – Shining Arc
    – Phantasy Star Nova
    Yaaay~,ninja-list updated.

Still,i really want to play a new Tri-Ace game(especially Valkyrie Profile 3 and SO5),i think End of Eternity was a great game, got platinum in it(those arena battles-farm was annoying a little).

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

    I miss Algol

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

So Phantasy Star Portable 4: Nova? This sounds like its going to be great

  • Huh, so tri-Ace made this? I wonder about how will the next incarnations of the Ethereal Qeen and Gabriel Celeste will look like this time…

  • midgard229

tri-ace……wtf… should be making valkyrie profile 3 for ps4!!!!!

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Rather than being happy about the fact that we are getting a new Phantasy Star series, i am more happy to see that my old favorite company Tri-Ace is still alive here.^_^

  • Brandonmkii

Calling it now, single player-rpg. No online means it’s not going to be a “portable”-like title, which wouldn’t make sense sinse PSO2 is already on the vita.

  • $61526767

Sounds interesting. Too bad its offline.. i would like online mode. But oh well, I would look forward to see more. And.. PSO2. yeah, I’m still waiting on you.

  • Valtiel Ikari

Phantasy Star offline and tri-ace? sure, why not

  • $36598391

oh my god, I’m getting this day freaking 1 if it comes to NA

  • Warboss Aohd

    -Single Player
    -Not iOS

  • Steven Higgins

I’m wondering if this will be like Phantasy Star Portable was to the first Phantasy Star Online?

Edit: Oops, Got my wires crossed. It was Phatasy Star Universe that Phatasy Star Portable was based on, wasn’t it?
    *goes sit in a corner*

    • Lynx

Portable was a sequel of sorts to Universe.

  • dragoon_slayer12

  • Sergio Briceño

=3 Now please bring the 32GB old OLED bundle here and I’ll be happy.

  • Takui Nanao

    cant wait so happy

  • Anime10121

Now DIS is Vita system seller material! A PS developed by Tri Ace? All of my monies if this babies localized!

  • Vyse Legendaire

Now THIS is the game that deserves to be on Vita, not that PSO2 MMO garbage. Let’s just hope it carried on the tradition of the original PSO and PS Zero, and has regular online as well as ad-hoc.

  • Aristides

    My heart burns… will this ever make it out of japan? ;_;

  • Jesse Torres

I’m liking all the vita news.

  • .:Raphællius:.

As for all the enthusiasts among us, i wouldn’t have high hopes for this getting a swift western release if i were you. Not gonna happen, unless they localize the PSO2 game any time soon. (and if it sells well)

  • wat_wat

lol, Tri-Ace is alive. This is great. Please don’t let me down, SEGA D:

  • Oho~. tri-Ace’s involvement has me significantly more interested than I was. Although seeing “star” and tri-Ace made me want Star Ocean.

  • I really like the visuals on Phantasy Star series and always wanted to play some of the games, but I’m not into MMORPGS so I skipped it. Guess this one, an offline game, will be perfect for me o/
