Over My Dead Body 2 Announced For Vita, First Look Sony’s Multi-Generation RPG

By Spencer . September 10, 2013 . 12:19am

Here’s a Vita game Sony didn’t announce last night – Over My Dead Body 2. The PlayStation Vita game is a sequel to the cult hit RPG where you help a family dispel a curse. What makes Over My Dead Body unique is party members die after two years of life and a new generation, which you help procreate, continue the quest with weapons their ancestors found and skills passed down to them. Over My Dead Body 2 retains this concept as seen in this lovely animated trailer.

Over My Dead Body 2 is slated for release in summer 2014.

  • Hmm never heard of the first one but this looks really good, I love the art style and the story looks to be solid. Can’t wait to learn more and hopefully try it out

  • Kevadu

I can’t be the only one wondering how they’re even physically capable of procreating if they only live two years…

    • klkAlexar

Asexually? And the kids are born fully grown?

    • wyrdwad

This is actually explained as part of the story. They’ve been cursed to “hyper-age” — essentially, they live out an entire lifetime in the span of only 2 years, rapidly growing older and wiser with each passing day.

Procreation, then, occurs with the gods (through a symbolic shinto-esque dance, at least in the first game; it’s not actually portrayed in any sort of sexualized manner), who are essentially trying to help you continue your family line so you can ultimately become strong enough to take down the demon who cursed you and end this string of tragic deaths once and for all.

…I should note, BTW, that this is in regards to the first game, so it might be different in this one. Also, I never got very far in the first game (it’s a game I quite like from the little I’ve played, but it’s still in my backlog, waiting to be given its due), so I may be misremembering or misinterpreting the story a bit.

      Still, that’s the general gist.

      • Sergio Briceño

Looks like an interesting concept. I can see myself feeling for these characters, if it’s indeed the case that they’ve dedicated their lives for generations on stopping a curse, so their descendants will one day live a normal life. Touching.

The background story to the first game is that you’re a baby, the only child of a pair of heroes, but a terrible event befell your family as they’re trying to save a city from a demon and you’re cursed to live only two years. The gods, however, took pity on you and gave you a counter-curse : you’re able to grow to adulthood within a much shorter period of time, to fit with your 2-year lifespan, and you’re allowed to ‘procreate’ with the gods themselves (which presumably does not involve sex as we know it) to create offspring, who are all cursed with the same thing as you. Your family’s task is this : destroy the demon who cursed you in the first place and save the people of this land. Should you succeed, the gods will accept your valor and revive the original you to live life as a normal human being, have a real childhood and really growing up, like that.

I can imagine the sequel being pretty much the same, too.

beautiful, Sony please take my money.

  • Raze

The dead is set for plot or you can evade it?

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Set–the curse is that every offspring of the family is to age to maturity and die within two years. You keep battling for generations, new offspring inheriting his/her parents’ skills, until they are able to take on the demon and break the curse.

and this game is also for 2014

i really hope gravity rush 2 is in development too
    or patapon game for vita

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

SCEJ has been cranking out titles and collabs like no one’s business. I definitely hope all of the games that you mentioned, especially Gravity Rush 2, are shown at TGS this year.

  • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

In my opinion, this game looks pathetic.

Doubt that the story will be consistently allowing you to interact with characters as they die off every 2 years.

Not that it’ll matter anyway – the chances of localization are questionable.

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

In the first game, at least, It’s only the protagonist who dies every two years–that’s the curse that has been placed on the family. The supporting characters are still around. I never played the first game, but I read a lot about it when it was first released in the 90s, and the screenshots are beautiful.

Have you ever played Romancing SaGa 2? That had the same sort of deal–if your protagonist, the emperor, dies, you have to name a successor. That was a really cool game. The focus is on the world, rather than the characters, but the story doesn’t suffer. Just because a game has an unorthodox focus when it comes to storytelling doesn’t mean it should be discounted.

  • Interesting premise. Sounds like a better version of Dragon Valor.

    • Testsubject909

Oooh. More people who know about Dragon Valor.

  • leingod

That’s a lot of people dying there. The concept sounds really cool, although I still don’t get the “die after two years of life” part. Hope to see some actual gameplay soon!

  • TheExile285

Come one Sony, you better localize this.

So what if we didn’t get he first. Just call it Over My Dead [Insert Subtitle Here]

Western Vita fans want more JRPGs!

  • Aristides

Go Go Gaijinworks on the PSP original!

    • Warboss Aohd

  • No gameplay in the trailer?

Been wanting years upon years for someone to localize this series. Come on, Sony. This time? If not, Aksys? Xseed? Atlus? Anyone?

    • TheExile285

TGS is soon. There should be info there.

  • artemisthemp

Is there even a chance for this making outside Japan?

  • Learii

    nice music

  • Solomon_Kano

Huh. I thought it was always for Vita?

  • xcornmuffinx

So hyped for this! The first game is one of my favorite PS1 era RPGs and is totally a hidden gem that doesn’t get as much respect as inferior games. I will preorder this as soon as preorders go up and I will not regret it.

  • Warboss Aohd

I can’t think o’ anythin’ bad ta say about wot i just saw.

Bring it on over here to da West.

  • Sentsuizan_93

Interesting. I can’t elaborate on the game as much, due to lack of gameplay footage, but i’m willing to look over this one and wait for more info.

  • JustThisOne

I kind of want at least one of the games in the series to come over. It’s a very unique concept. There aren’t enough games where the in-game plot lasts generations and generations.

  • Erwin MadJelly

I don’t know how to explain from what I saw in the story trailer… I see people die after all the monster slaughtering (despite the japanese word for Tragedy is present). But somehow sounds like a game I wanna try :D
