Kokonoe Is A Paid DLC Character For Blazblue: Chronophantasma

By Spencer . September 11, 2013 . 5:00pm

l_522eb59789762

Kokonoe will leave her lab and enter Blazblue: Chronophantasma as a playable character… for a price. Famitsu says Kokonoe is a paid DLC character, which is interesting because when we talked to Blazblue producer Toshimichi Mori he said while Chronophantasma will have paid DLC like voice packs the game would not have any paid DLC characters.

Kokonoe uses mecha and tools in battle, kind of like a scientist. Don’t be deceived by her smart look, Kokonoe is a speedy and furious fighter.

The Kokonoe DLC pack does not have a release date. Blazblue: Chronophantasma comes out for PS3 in Japan on October 24. Aksys will release the English version in early 2014.

  • raitouniverse

    Well played ASW. Well played.

    • MrJechgo

I’m sorry, but… how “making her DLC” when he clearly said that “there wouldn’t be DLC” is considered “well played” again?

      • Kaitsu

Because everyone asked for her to be a character. And because of the very reason what you just said.

They played us. That’s what “well played” means in this context.

      • Triplicity

I suppose in the “ha ha, damn you clever bastards” sort of way where they announce a character that a great many people have been wanting playable for a very long time… then making her paid DLC

      • SigmaNHK

He’s probably referring to the fact that Kokonoe is finally playable after so much demand, but you’ll have to pay to play as her.

      • raitouniverse

“Well played” because they’re going to make money by selling a character everyone wants. I exactly don’t agree with what they’re doing, but I respect that it’s not a bad business decision. They won. We lost. We have been defeated.

      • ehecatl

It’s well played because no matter how much all of you gripe, most of yoy WILL buy her first day. It’s well played because it’s a good business tactic.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Indeed she’s the perfect character to be DLC, everyone wants her, but she has direct relevance in the plot without even being playable, so now they can make her and charge money for it XD

  • Hatsuaki

Heh, for ASW themselves it’s a smart move. Kokonoe is a character fans have long since been hyping for the possibility of being playable, so that assures them that they’re getting good cash by making her paid DLC. Then again, Mori is a liar and you shouldn’t trust anything he says until the game is finally released.

I honestly didn’t expect the game to NOT have any DLC characters.

    • TheRealMalek

Isn’t there a dlc code in the limited edition of the game ?

      • TokkanRAM

The DLC code isn’t a limited edition bonus, it’s a preorder bonus. It gives access to Terumi. Officially there are only 2 ways to unlock Terumi: the pre-order code or buy him as a DLC to be released at a TBD date and pricepoint. Contrary to popular belief, Terumi will NOT be unlockable normally in-game; he is only DLC. A DLC given to all the fans loyal enough to preorder as a free bonus, but a DLC nonetheless.

It’s not likely that Terumi’s DLC will be released Day 1 since that negates part of the perks of preordering.

  • endril

    Aloof lollipop science cats.

  • British_Otaku

Not particularly surprised and not particularly annoyed…
Given that I don’t have a PS3 at the moment, I’ll probably won’t pick up this in quite some time or perhaps Chronophantasma II if it’s announced by then. >_>

  • Arcana Wiz

Yes! i was kinda afraid that her play style would be more slower, cause i like faster characters……
And about the Paid DLC thing…. yeah it’s strange, but at least we can hope for more characters, *cough*jubei*cough*.

  • Michael Connell

So I guess this means while we can play as her in vs mode we’ll have to wait till Chrono Phantasma Extend for her to have a story

    • Arcana Wiz

probably, but if it follow CS pattern, we will have to wait another two years.

    • Herok♞

There are only 3 Stories(4 if you count true end) this time so if they make her playable in arcade mode then their is no reason for them to release another version.

  • stephane3012

Didnt they said that the whole roster was already revealed and they weren’t going to add anybody even as dlc? !

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Well Toshichimi Mori said there wouldn’t be DLC, but apparently he has a reputation as a liar, or ASW changed their minds cause they knew Kokonoe is a cash cow waiting to be milked.

  • Vadim Merzhey

Didn’t they say there won’t be paid DLC characters?

    Oh, and GIGANTIC TAGER!!!

    • Tyler Beale

The creators don’t always get to decide everything – it’s either a decision from the top, or maybe he changed his mind since that statement.

  • Wait what

Seriously? I held off on all of the rereleases of Continuum Shift because I knew those DLC characters would be part of the next major game. Guess I might as well wait for Chrono Phantasma Extend now as well. I refuse to buy this game as long as it has paid DLC characters planned well before the game is even out.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu of Spades

Though I’m still getting this game (not really interested in Kokonoe myself) even if expansions are bound to happen, I respect that decision.

    • Curan_Altea

I don’t really consider a month long before, and to be fair we don’t know how far along she is.

  • Milton Martinez

why would you guys want a story mode of kokonoe. basically she is feature in most story of all characters….she even has her own thing call help me professor kokonoe.

  • Herok♞

I am kinda annoyed at this news but it could be worse, at least for this game we don’t have to worry about missing a story for her since we don’t have individual character stories anymore. If she is available to use in Arcade that will mean she will be available in every mode. Also this article is a little food for thought and why I don’t mind paying for DLC characters: http://www.siliconera.com/2012/02/09/the-art-of-blazblue-part-2-animation-phase/ at the very least I know I will be paying for somthing that is a quilty product that won’t just be thrown together.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu of Spades

Yeah, her position in CP’s story won’t change at least. Maybe in the next game, depending on how things unfold here.

    • RichyGaming

Yeah I agree, my respect for ASW went farther when I read about those articles (They had other articles about BlazBlue too I think). And after reading them, it’s a surprise that they made many characters in this game. They could have made Yuki Terumi DLC or some other characters. But it’s just Kokonoe. Nobody’s money is going to be a waste either, since I already predict that she’s worth it.

    • colorblindnightmare

I agree. I’m a little steamed at the fact that Arc went back on their word, but, there is plus. I know that through the extra content the game will be far deeper. More match ups, more strategy, and definitely more layer to the story. For cs the only two i paid for where makoto and trinity (which was actually some one else who paid for it so he could play them when he came over) and they were great additions. Frankly, after seeing how nice her sprite looks and the screen shot of glastonbur…..uh…i mean xxxxl zeta beam tager, i cannot wait to see if she’s a “for super cereal guys” type joke character.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu of Spades

Now I know she’s the gag/joke/fuck all character in this game. lol

  • http://www.unit03.net blackraen

I can’t remember where, either here or on dustloop, but I remember reading a comment someone posted that keeps coming to mind:

“It’s like Mori is addicted to lying to us.”

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu of Spades

      Yeah, I’m sure it’s dustloop.

  • Alestaos

I got the vita game Shift Extend and being new to the series i got it mainly due to the indepth story mode. From what i played so far im really enjoying it. So i might get this next year. She looks like a fun character i love how distinct they all are too. No clones ^^

  • Nitraion

Why BB producer have to lie?

I still rember the news about not having paid dlc chara.. :?

  • Richard N

Lets hope Xrd doesn’t do any DLC crap…..

Ah, who the hell am I kidding. I’ll buy any DLC for GG. Characters, announcers, colours, gems! ***KING GUILTY GEAR!!

  • Vesperion

    Lemme get this straight

    Aksys says no DLC characters
    Kokonoe GETS added as DLC
We got guys saying “Well played” as if they did a good job

I like BB and all, but it’s interesting how this turned out. Before i get flamed and downvoted to death let me just say….

If this was CAPCOM you would not hear the end of it

    • http://nisekami.deviantart.com/ NiseKami

They’re praising it as a dick move

    • Herok♞

Trust me we won’t hear the end of this either the only company I think could get away with this is Atlus

      • RichyGaming

        Why Atlus?

        • Herok♞

People love Atlus and all they do, granted I like them and all but they could get away with murder if need be.

          • RisukuAozora

I dunno, that whole thing with P4A’s region-locking did piss off a lot of people (especially Europeans). I just think Atlus just has more forgiveness space for some people than say the big guys like Capcom or Square Enix.

          • XiaomuArisu

            ….Is there Atlus DLC?
            I cant rememberXD

          • 하세요

SMT IV had DLC, but all of it is completely optional (granted ALL DLC is optional) and won’t effect your experience of the game at all.

          • Kevin Schwarz

Contrary to BB, since Kokonoe gets A LOT of dialogue ingame, but with NIS games for example, you don’t see DLC characters in the main story, and then not fighting, unless you actually buy the DLC. It’s like ASW just tease us with Kokonoe every time, and then you can’t play as her. =/

          • Tyler Beale

My copy of Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory is collecting dust (I have the LE), and the DLC is handled in all the wrong reasons. NISA took a long time to get those characters over here (even though CH had yet to release them in Japan when the NA version came out), but hey, they added voices!! Since I already beat the game, it’s useless to me since they’re no more than simply a few Events per character.

Oh, and then there’s the triple-digit level bullshit for the DLC quests.

      • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

and NIS. we don’t see complains about disgaea being rereleased nor for the dlc characters being released for it either

        • RoxasTheUnknown1

But….I do complain about NIS DLC methods. xD Just not all the time on the internet. Its for a myriad of reasons but thats one of the reasons I haven’t bought a NIS game since the original D3.

          • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

I particularly never had seen a complain about them. maybe because i don’t read many disgaea articles

          • RoxasTheUnknown1

I don’t really post about it as it’s not really worth it. NIS won’t change because they can get away with it since the majority of the fandom is fine with it. As the minority I just decided to distance myself from that.

          • Anime10121

I buy them, I just miss out on more than half of the story because they turn it into DLC….that and I dont have a Vita yet, so I cant get the “all in one package”.

          • AkuLord3

I don’t really see the complaint for it…i never get better cuz i just buy who i want and really you don’t need them and you have tons of content in the game already that it really doesn’t matter

          • RoxasTheUnknown1

That’s why I don’t complain. xD It’s rare people would ever see eye to eye on this. I didn’t NEED all the content that was in D2 but I did it all. D2 had 3x more content than D3 vanilla. Costed way less too. D 1&2 felt complete. They were beyond complete. Nowadays you have to pay for what was extra in those games.

          • Kevin Schwarz

Believe me, those extra stuff in NIS games are just one or two dialogue scenes per character then nothing else than the character itself, also, you don’t miss much. But in this case, being few characters, since it’s a fighting game, a single character even if just for versus and challenge modes, it’s a big deal. Specially with such a wanted character as Kokonoe.

    • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

      ArcSys*
Aksys is just the publisher (but i see why we confuse them alot lol)

    • FFmax

      I know right?

    • Triplicity

The people saying “well played” are almost certainly saying it sarcastically, matching the “wow Mori is a liar” comments

  • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

    BBCP2 confirmed.
What I find funny about this situation is that if it was capcom there would be alot of rage comments.

    • RichyGaming

It’d be nice if they just patched the game, and DLC of new storylines instead of having to buy a brand new remake. I can’t any longer for CP, so i’m gonna be pissed if they make CP2

      • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

well they can play the CS card again. release dlc characters and a patch for it. then release the Extend version. it’s a fighting game that we are talking about (the only one that don’t this is namco with tekken since the console version of tekken is the definitive one).
I don’t trust anyone in this industry anymore so I don’t even get mad. because I know that there is a huge chance of they making the GOTY version down the road

        • RichyGaming

But then again… they might not do that. They haven’t released several versions on Calamity Trigger so it might be different for CP. Especially now that every character is caught up. Unless they make a brand new version just for Jubei, to show what he’s been up to.

          • Arcana Wiz

and CS only had two versions, one year and half apart.

          • Arcana Wiz

CSII was a free patch, dont know why some people count as a new game.

          • XiaomuArisu

Wow…..Normally Im the one saying thatXD

          • British_Otaku

It’s a separate game on the PSP and 3DS (where I started the series) and had quite a few additions even if it wasn’t a retail game on consoles. >_>

          • Arcana Wiz

the psp and ds were ports of the game, is like you buying DC for both vita and ps3, they did the ports to people who love handheld gaming, if you like console or didn’t want to buy another game they gave all balance changes for FREE as a patch.

          • British_Otaku

Didn’t you still need to buy Makoto, Valkenhayn and Platinum if you stuck with the console “CSII”?

Free balance changes aside, CSII exists as a separate game for adding the characters, their arcade stories and voice clips from the get go and likely those balance patches too.

A big difference between Dragon’s Crown for PS3 and Vita as far as I know is that they are basically the exact same game. The same name, the same characters, the same trophies, the same adventure, the same everything and it was a simultaneous release.

CSII is much harder for me to define as a game than Super Street Fighter 4 or Tekken 3, but I think it is separate enough from being separate from CS in the Arcades and having a separate retail release which you can’t download all of the content for free on consoles.

  • Aisha Lee

Honestly I don’t have a problem with this (was actually hoping for more characters.) Beside wasn’t the only reason we got extend was because people asked for a update to character moves (that and relius).

    • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

extend was going to be only on the vita but they added so much that in the end they decided to release it to others plataforms

  • hazelnut1112

This is pretty upsetting, revealing a character people wanted in the game since the longest and hyping it up. Then give your fans the middle finger by making her paid DLC. There is seriously something wrong with this.

    • Kevin Schwarz

Thanks to Capcom and all their crap, every company is copypasting their mentality…

      • AkuLord3

Well Arcsys has done this before with CS with the 3 characters but they did promise they weren’t going do this and then do…kinda messed up

      • MrJechgo

At least ASW gives us characters that we actually want. I don’t recall Shuma-Gorath and Jill Valentine being THAT requested compared to Gambit and Mega Man for MvC3, or recall Evil Ryu and Oni being THAT requested compared to Karin and Alex for SSFIVAE. Granted, Evil Ryu and an alternate version of Shin Akuma were in the Alpha series, but they were looooooooooow on the demand chart.

NRS did this for Injustice, because Lobo, Martian Manhunter and Zatanna were heavily demanded… and they gave them to us.

The only way I could see this as “okay” is if they make Kokonoe useable in every mode, Arcade included with 3 major fights with dialogues and ending, and that they keep releasing characters without ever doing an Extend version. It’s fine to update the arcade versions, but for consoles, don’t force people to buy another version.

        • Kevin Schwarz

Oh well we all know how ASW are copying ALSO Capcom’s mentallity since they tend to release an Extend version, and even a plus extended version of every game… I wouldn’t be surprised if they do the same after they release other DLC characters, just adding their story/arcade dialogues.

        • Ty Austin

ASW is far worse about releasing new versions than Capcom is. New versions of SF4 were reasonably priced and got you quite a bit of new content. Super add 10 characters among other things and was 40. AE gave you 4 characters and was 20. Every BB version has cost at least 40$ on release and offered nowhere near the same amount of characters as Capcom, THEN added DLC characters after you bought it.

          • Aisha Lee

All the blazblue game that came out after CT were priced 40 dollars too (with the except of this up coming one and CSII was a free update), couple with the fact that not only does SF has a longer history then blazblue and that 3d model are generally easier to product vs 2D sprite so of course were not going to get a giant amount of characters for a 2D game in a short amount of time.

        • DanteMasamune

Maybe its me but I find the fact that they’re making a character that fans demanded for a long time paid DLC before the game is even out instead of putting her in the game a bit worse. Hell they could’ve at least made her a pre-order bonus.
The fact they lied (or changed their minds) about not using DLC characters makes it even worse.
BB fans should be more pissed and talk directly to ASW otherwise they’ll continue to do this again and many other publishers/developers will follow if they see company A can get away with this.

  • Kevin Schwarz

They could have added Kokonoe, this is outrageous! They know we all screamed for Kokonoe since years ago…but the money is more important than the fans’ happiness, it seems.

    • Anime10121

Its the 21st century, when it comes to business in this new millennium, you gotta shell out the bucks and buy happiness :P

    • Aisha Lee

We’re getting 6 brand new characters on day one disc release. Why are we whining about one dlc character reveal so far?

  • dahuuuundge

so you still end up buying an incomplete game at release…

    • AkuLord3

Don’t see how 1 character makes the game incomplete but whatever

    • RichyGaming

It’s just one character… they could have made someone else out of the 6 new characters DLC as well. So it could have been worse.

  • fireemblembeast

If she could fight like this, she should have kicked hazama’s butt a long time ago! XD
I can’t wait to kick Hazama’s trollish butt as Kokonoe

  • Milla

ASW Said before they would NOT make chars DLC for CP
look at they go back on the word >.>

  • AkuLord3

You know i don’t mind…i wanted to play as Kokonoe, so do alot of people and it having dlc is fine (its not bad, just how its handled) and i’m not surprised either but come on…you can’t through this after saying you WEREN’T going do it. That just leaves a bad taste for you and the company.

  • Angel Lopez

Has anyone even thought about if Arc has confirmed she’s DLC? Sure Famitsu says she’s paid DLC but is there any confirmed proof that she will be paid DLC? Until I see or hear anything that confirms she’s DLC I’ll consider her already in the game.

  • FFmax

So we can’t trust anything they say any more? That’s a great way to treat your fanbase :/ I’m getting real tired of these shady DLC practices.

  • Ty Austin

If this were Capcom’s fighting game, people would be up in arms in this comments section, lol.

    • BlueTree

      They kind of are.

  • BlueTree

Pleasant surprise if you dig this series and don’t dig knee jerk reactions to the words of a promotional speaker who was TRYING TO SELL A PRODUCT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

  • Aisha Lee

I don’t why people complaining about this so much. Granted they did lie about there being no dlc characters but people are acting like they are really after your money. If they really wanted to take your money, They could have made Kagura and Terumi paid dlc as well, but they didn’t and now we have 6 new fighters to try out on release that and Arksys is busying work on not only one but three fighting games so I picture the work at arksys isn’t cheap (along with the fact the 2-D animation isn’t cheap either). So if anything this just revenue they need keep on producting stuff. I’m normally the type of person who like to have all my stuff on a on disc. But don’t complain about one dlc character reveal so far when we have a good chunk of content from the start.

    • Mike Pureka

Actually, I think Terumi IS DLC.

    • TheMightyKamina

But I don’t think that putting Kagura,a newcomer that people have no connection to could have helped, instead they put kokonoe a character people have been asking for a long time.
And i Think Terumi is DLC

      • Aisha Lee

I believe the way the have Terumi set up as dlc is also the same way they had with Mu-12 for CS that if you didn’t want to play through the entire story to get him you could just pay 99 cents for him. That and if you pre-order chrono phantasma, they give you a code to download Terumi for free.

        • TheMightyKamina

Hmmm…..Yeah Terumi case make sense,But still Kagura being DLC wouldn’t generate as much money as kokonoe will as DLC

  • TheRealMalek

Why does i feel she will play like faust in Guilty gear ?

  • epy

Guess I’ll just wait for the Extend version. Still, once you lie once like this in an interview, people will call into question every statement you make for a long, long time. I wonder if it’s worth it.

  • ProfessorFluffy

According to the Amazon page for the game:

“New Characters – Chrono Phantasma will introduce five new
characters and two new downloadable characters, bringing the roster list
    to 25!”

If this is to believed Kokonoe won’t be the only DLC character.

    • Mike Pureka

I think Terumi is already confirmed to be a DLC character.

  • ivanchu77

I´m sure they said “no DLC characters” before -_-

    Bunch of liars

  • XiaomuArisu

Maybe is for free the first weeks?
    Would be cool

    • British_Otaku

That’s still paid DLC and rewarding the early consumers is really just getting more people to buy first hand copies as soon as possible.

I suppose it would be nice for those people who would be buying pretty early, that said.

  • http://strictlyapathy.comoj.com/ SoulArbiter

Is this a sign that her daddy will soon join the fray?

  • monkey king

    …chrono phantasma extend it is.

    • Göran Isacson

Concur with this guy. No need to be an early adopter if they’re not gonna be upfront about what is and isn’t DLC.

  • Linhua

… it doesn’t bother me that she’s paid DLC since I saw this coming anyway… but what I AM a little upset about, here is this new ‘Trend’ going around in the industry.

… all of these developers are turning into pretty little liars.

… I remember Team Ninja stating that they would NOT be using the Sex Selling Gimmick for the DOA Girls… and that they would NOT be doing the DLC thing… but now that it’s out… they’ve went full blown sexual sauce and gave the fans a scrit-ton of DLC with a vast selection of them being ultra revealing… and then!! They’ve got a NEW Fukken MODE for the BooB Physics called ‘OMG’.

… now here we stand with BlazBlue… it stuck in my mind that they were not going to release any character DLC for the game… and though that pained me to hear… I accepted it… only for them to pull one of these.

… and Capcom, well let me not get started on Captain Founder .-.

… point is… I don’t mind the lies, honestly… since they’ve all been pleasant ones so far. I’d rather them say something isn’t gonna be there and then it totally is versus them telling us that something will be there and then it totally wasn’t.

… I just don’t think it’s very cool to lie to their fans like this continually. I feel as though there should be a certain level of trust that the two of us must maintain in order for our relationship to keep from going stale.

… pass enough lies out and who knows where you’ll end up… = … I don’t wanna see these great companies’ fan bases crumble out of lack of trust and honesty. If you’re not absolutely sure you will or will not be doing something… then you probably shouldn’t set it in stone and share it with the public.

… and it saddens me even more that every other company is following along with this trend like it’s the right thing to do. If you want our money that badly, then just state so in a manner of revealing pleasant content that magically opens wallets.

    • ShadowDivz

I love how you called Capcom “captain founder” xD.

And what’s wrong with sexual sauce? I hear it goes great with hand lotion.

      • Linhua

… so i’ve heard as well… but i’ve yet to have had the experience… heh.

    • wez

They asked fans what they liked and disliked about doa5 and the vast majority said the boobs were to small lol xD. So blame the fans. I love doa5 and how it’s a “sexy” fighter

  • Istillduno

There is always the hope that she could be like Mu, unlockable through gameplay or downloadable for people with more money than sense or patience.

    If not that’s ****ed up.

    • British_Otaku

Chances are it would have been announced the other way around if it was like that, but then I haven’t read the news report of when Mu was announced or checked the game to know for sure.

“bawwww she should be released for free! And while they are at it they should release the game for free also and I should work for free too”

Ed Boon : We won’t put MK character in Injustice
    *puts Scorpion as DLC*

ASW : BBCP won’t have paid DLC character
    *this happens*

On the other side though, Harada haven’t put a single paid dlc character in TTT2 and Ono haven’t made another disc-based release for SFxT, props to them for sticking to their words.

TTT2 did have DLC characters actually, in the sense that they were free DLC characters which were unlocked for free after a period of time but accessible early to people who preorder games at select stores and retailers (which isn’t a problem now I admit).

I have a huge amount of respect towards Harada and TTT2, however it still is far from being that game you jam into your system in launch day and unlock all of the characters or just your favourites in less than a day to less than a weekend.

I may not hate it as much as I hate waiting AND having to pay an amount, but it still isn’t brilliant unless you got the game after the time factor… I’m pretty convinced that Namco were using the characters as a means to make more money from early buyers while dodging the whole “charging people for characters on the disc” flack that Capcom may as well have a crown for at this point. Perhaps they even saw an increase in buyers after major characters were “officially” unlockable by the masses too.

SFxT is such a mess just on the promised and hidden content alone, that keeping to one promise is the least they can do.

A day late, I know, but if THIS was paid DLC….I’d pay for it regardless:

Oh wait that’s a full game that I’d like to see ASW develop. (’cause CH would probably fuck it up if they got their hands on it!)

Im gonna be in a ASW crossover! SUWETH!
      yeah thats Neptunia alright

…Yep! I just had to do it. Maybe Ragna and the rest of the BB roster will crack some video-game-industry parodies too!

…But seriously, I, among many other people, would love to see this happen!
