Indie Fighter Under Night In-Birth Gets Two New Characters

By Eugene . September 13, 2013 . 3:00pm

Just over a year ago, indie fighter Under Night In-Birth hit arcade stands in Japan. 4Gamer sat down for an exclusive interview with developers Narita Nobuya and Serizawa “French Bread” Kamone to check out new character Chaos, unveil surprise guest character Akatsuki and chat about upcoming massive changes to the game’s metagame balance.

Dubbed Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late to follow the idea of “executing a program late at night”, said Narita, the first new character is Chaos, an ally of Gordeau.

Serizawa noted that Chaos will be a very technical character—a cancel and pincer-style fighter whose high agility will run rings around foes. Nonetheless, he stressed, Chaos will “not be a difficult character to play”.

The larger surprise was the unveil of Akatsuki from The Lightning War of Akatsuki, another arcade battler released in 2008. While more details were not forthcoming for the guest character, he will come with his own set of combos and abilities to rival other fighters in the game and has been noted to be an AI-exclusive enemy for now.

The big balancing act, said Narita, will be trying to move away from the impression that Under Night is a combo-style battler reliant on stringing together long chains to win. Their initial idea of a game with easy-to-combine counters unfortunately created that perception, he said, especially amongst beginners and intermediates who could get stuck with no recourse against expert combo jugglers.

Guard Thrust in action

Balance will thus take the form of additional new actions such as Recovery Correction Costs and Force Functions. Recovery Correction Costs will nudge players to split up their attacks by also having to manage their EXS and GXD meters more closely than ever. Force Function, meanwhile, will give added punch to skills when unleashed to help offset the drop in damage from shortened combos. Easier Guard Cancels, air intercepts and dash-aways will also shift focus to a more strategic “ground war battle”, added Serizawa.

The newly updated version is out now in Japan’s arcades.

Akatsuki Blitzkampf represen– CPU character only?! Aww…

    • Canceris

      He will become playable eventually.

      • Freakmasta

        Tank needs to be playable

        • Zarx

Blitztank too anime for UNIB. Kappa.

    • Kelohmello

Sion/Eltnum was also a CPU only character for a period.

Let’s put Soldiers as a bonus round

    • Eder García

is like UMK3 Noob and Rain all over again

  • Kaitsu

I can smell it. I can smell it eventually coming to PC.

    • Kelohmello

They already have it running on PS3. They’re still deciding what they’re going to put it on, they said PC is still an option, but worth keeping in mind that it has been shown to run on a PS3.

      • TheBlackRabbit

whoa it ran on ps3?….plz a ps3 release would just be gorgeous!

    • Pfantzypantz

They pretty much confirmed a Steam version, though it might be a while. I’m very much hyped.

      • Crevox

        give sourcessssss

        • Pfantzypantz

At the bottom, the interviewer asks about a Steam version that was hinted at before, and they reply with something along the lines of “We still really want to do a Steam version, but it would be after the console version releases.”

          • Kaitsu

Yeah, I think during one of their streams. They loaded the game off a PS3. So consoles are definitely confirmed. But I probably won’t get it, due to the nature of how the game is played. Controllers probably won’t be comfortable for me. :c

    • CirnoLakes

      I want it.

  • Shady Shariest

This, looks nice… I really like the design…

  • Göran Isacson

On the one hand, I kind of like how lowkey most of these character designs are, without actually being unmemorable. There are a few chars who are downright ArcSys crazy like the guy with the huge claws and the guy with the purple vest and Merkava, but for some reason most of these guys manage to look appealing despite the fact most of them would be difficult to pick out if they were just silhouettes. Maybe it’s the art-style, I just like the understatedness of most designs, including this here Chaos guy.

But man, Akatsuki Blitzkampf chars? THAT, I did not expect. I welcome it, but didn’t expect it.

  • Kelohmello

So, also worth mentioning that some French Bread employees met with Mike-Z a couple months back. French Bread is interested in putting a Skullgirls character into the game.

    • Eder García

yeah, maybe this part is not in this article because it’s not official yet. let’s wait

      • Kelohmello

I never said it was guaranteed or official. I just said they’re interested in it. That by no means says that it’s going to happen.

        • Eder García

it’s going to happen, just both parts are not going to reveal details right now.

    • Göran Isacson

Oh man, that sounds amazingly awesome. Kinda curious if they’re going to pull a fast one and have French Bread develop one of the characters who didn’t make it into the voting round so they can essentially get one of ’em done for free, or if they’re going to just have the guest star be an already existing Skullgirl char… if it happens, of course.

  • Professor_Icepick

    C’mon PC version!

  • NightzeroAX

Read up about this on their website a few weeks ago. I really hope they make a PC version. Oh I forgot to mention how ridiculously good the Soundtrack is.

  • Kotorin

I really hope they change the current state this game because it’s pretty broken as it is (not UMVC3 broken but still broken). Combos go on for way too long, character balance is just awful with Yuzu and Carmine dominating at high level play and corners are pretty much a cage because corner block strings are really hard to escape from especially if you’re meterless.

    • Kelohmello

I guess you haven’t been following the game. For reference, the version being talked about in this article is Exe:Late. And since you’re mentioning long combos…. Voila!

      • Kotorin

I should do some research before saying anything. My bad ;/

    • AkuLord3

Never saw Yuzu overpowered…just had many options and long combos…really only character who had that was Linne. I never really was bother by them (some aren’t) especially if you could get it going was pretty cool but its understandable that its annoying waiting for it to end for players.

Yuzu in the first version of the game was the go to win because you could punish the oponent pretty easy with her. Rinne had that stupid infinite combo. But Vatista is the most dangerous character in the game IMO (too much BS factor while seeing matches with her)

    • Kotarou Tennouji

C’mon Kotori, keep up with the news!

      • Kotorin

        Uuuuuu… Kotori-san has fallen behind the times…

*two new character uh? what is the other one?
    See Akatsuki
Hype lvl is reaching lvl 6 almost on the infinite level”
Goddamn it, French Bread! First Sion and now Akatsuki. if you guys include Kanae i’ll be in heaven. but since Kanae (let’s grab ’em) and most of the guys at BlitzKampf did not even born yet I can’t see this happening

  • vileBrenman

This game is beautiful! I only recently learned about this game but damn im waiting for a console release like chaos code received.

  • Go2hell66

Undernight In-Birth is an indie fighter??????
    is it really?
do indie fighter’s get released in arcades?

    • Melty Blood did, and that was released in arcades.

  • XiaomuArisu

  • DyLaN

I don’t care about the platform, I just want it in english……. official or other means.

  • AKATSUKI YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! OH MAN, I was not expecting this addition.

I miss that Akatsuki Blitzcampf game. An SNK styled fighter with a WW2 setting.

  • courte

you know how ARCSYS games have that counter/fatal counter system of crazy hitstun and increased damage for the continuing combo, which makes for the truly ridiculous combos which are still pretty hard to pull off?

what if they made an anime fighter with that same underlying mechanic, but the opponent is only in a ‘fatal’ state for say the next 3-5 moves?

it might retain the sense of a fight as oppose to an interactive combo video and get more people interested in anime fighters

  • Thomaz Barros

How long are the combos in this version?

  • Been playing this a lot lately at the arcades! Really fun fighter! Love playing as Linne (short girl with double swords).

  • Epic Markell Joshua

I wish this get’s released for everything if my pc can run it i’ll buy if not i’ll buy a ps3 for this game but i rather it come out on the new consoles.
