Pokemon X And Pokemon Y Let You Customize Your Trainer At Boutiques And Salons

By Ishaan . September 13, 2013 . 10:30am

In Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, you have the ability to customize your trainer once the game begins. You do this by visiting boutiques and a salon to change your outfit and hairstyles. You’ll be able to change your clothes, hat, shoes and accessories.

A number of cities throughout X and Y’s Kalos region have boutiques, each with their own style. Additionally, when you update your trainer’s look, your icon on the Player Search System (PSS) gets updated, too.

  • Lloyd Christmas

Neato. I wonder if there’ll be an option to remove your hat.

    • Flynn Scifo

I think this is impossible. lol

    • MagneticSpark

you can, there are some people without hats in the PSS screnshot

      • Suicunesol

I think those hat-less people are NPCs.

        • ShimaPantsu

Possibly but I thought the PSS was a tool to communicate between players.

          • Suicunesol

I’m sure it is, but I can’t shake the feeling it would also double as a communication device for some NPCs as well. Every Pokemon game starting from G/S had one. Cell phone. Trainer’s Eye. Poketch. Xtransceiver.

        • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Then, what about the footage where the male trainer is without his hat, huh? Also, the PSS is for people you pass near and have already set on your friend’s list.

          • Symbol de Au

I’m going to say that’s the rival trainer unless you can post the footage yourself.

          • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Oh, yeah, you’re right, mixed up the female and male trainers in gameplay trailer 4. My mistake.

          • Suicunesol

            Which footage?

          • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Got the trainers in gameplay 4 mixed up. My bad. Though, at the top of that screenshot, it says internet, which leads me to believe otherwise on the NPC front.

      • Symbol de Au

Those both look like NPC’s. The one at the bottom is a lass and the one with the purple hair has a different facial expression head shape and body shape than the others.

        • MagneticSpark

PSS is an acronym for Player Search System, so I’m pretty sure those aren’t NPCs

          • Symbol de Au

In the older Pokémon games you could choose an NPC’s appearance to represent you when you played online. That’s what I meant. I doubt you can walk around as a lass in the actual game.

          • MagneticSpark

true, i forgot about that. we can hope though :p

          • Sperium3000

Well, maybe they will allow some NPC hairstyles? It’s like in games like Skyrim, where all the NPCs are made using the in-game character creation system.

        • DanteMasamune

So does this mean each in game trainer or NPC may have different looks even in trainer class so I can run into 2 different Fishermens or different Lasses or Youngsters who look different….or not?

Also, if that is the actual main lass you see in the game but one thing I noticed is that the past Lasses looked like Japanese School Girls where in X & Y they look like…..well European boarding school girls (France haha) and this Lass gives off a Harry Potter/Hogwarts type of feel (since Hogwarts is based off old school European/British boarding schools).

    • Godman

This is the only thing left to set my customizing-obsessed mind at ease

    • Göran Isacson

      Pokemon protagonists… without HATS?

I don’t know if that’s HERESY, or a whole new world of possibilities.

    • im sure there will be. i bet they are just showing different hats to let us know that that is one of the customizable items.

  • Brimfyre

Well looks like I’ll be playing as a girl this time.
It’s never fun to dress up dudes.

    • Godman

It is for me when I’m the dude

    • Rytan

      I beg to differ. Although I wish they’d be as open as Animal Crossing and let guys and girls wear whatever they wanted. What if I wanna rock a skirt too, huh? ;_;

      • InfectedAI

Rock a kilt and bagpipe accessory.

      • i was thinking the same thing. i would love to make my male trainer a brolita. lol. that would be too cute! -‘0’-

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

brolita?……*nosebleed* what? no can’t see that in pokemon

          • i can!

          • i can!

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

            ugh I Kanto

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

            ugh I Kanto

        • Raharu95

I believe the tern for that is Shota~

          • no…shota is young boys engaging in sexual content. “brolita” is bros in lolita garb, in which bros are males of various ages.

          • Raharu95

AH dear. You is right~ I just checked and you are right. Thank you for the correction ^^

      • FirstaLasto

I kinda didn’t want this game at first because of how fifth generation dream world abilities kinda ruined competitive battling for me, but if I can dress my guy in pretty pink dresses then I’ll buy it no matter what.

    • Suicunesol

I like dressing up girls too, but I’m choosing male because I want to appear as my corresponding gender in WiFi battles.

      • Keksus

I don’t care about WiFi battles. I care when I play with other people on the street or the university. But oh well. At least changing the gender isn’t such a pain in the ass thanks to the online box.

      • Kai2591

        same here :)

    • Cazar

It was the opposite for me, I usually play as a girl because I don’t care for many of the male character designs. This time I was going to play as a guy because at least you could customize him… but I’m not so sure now; those are some pretty effeminate looking clothes that they showed on him in that trailer.

    • Sakurazaki

I’ll most likely be playing a birl in this one too… G/S/C was probably the only gen I cared to go for the male. Crystal’s hair was just “:/”

Unless they somehow get Kamen Rider-like armor here, lol. Loved that in SMTIV

  • Learii

is be funny they let you running around naked lol but Nintendo won’t allowed that

  • XypherCode

    Now that’s a cool feature.

  • J_Joestar

*Awaits Event DLC costumes for Gym leaders, Elite Four, Champions, etc…*

    • jugss

      hahhahhaaha Ash in Elesa suit

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Getting DLC for Animal Crossing is more likely

    • im still hoping they will do region dlc. ;u;

      • Placido Michael Cortorreal Flo

we can start sending emails regarding that…
Dear Game Freak…and Nintendo, do you remember that one communication where you said ¨were making DLC free for our games, and we will bring expansions to the games we make¨ right?
Ok then…this is my one request…in your next DLC expansion of a game, think of Pokemon, and when you do…THINK ABOUT PUTTING ANOTHER REGION…thanks in advance

        • think of how wonderful that would be…no need for a gen 3 remake cause, “BAM!” you can go to the Hoenn region and battle the gyms and catch pokemon and blahblahblah. it wouldnt even have to be free.

[also not sure why i was downvoted up there ;n;]

    • Chaos_Knight

I would love to see DLC clothing of past Gen trainers.

    • Hinataharem

I was like “Pfftt Elesa is in her normal outfi-…oh that’s Cilan o///o”

  • Curan_Altea

I was gonna wait until next year or so to pick this up.
But I’m a sucker for character customization…. And in a series I’ve been wanting it in for years.

  • Godman

YES!!!! And with this news any doubts in my mind for shallow customization
has been blown out the window!

  • YoshEE

Man I am so excited!!! Why can’t they release it early lol xD

  • Symbol de Au

They chose some bad styles to showcase the guy…

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

Fashion no no !!! Its like they randomly put it together.

  • Suicunesol

I hope I can dress like NPC trainers. It would be nice if certain trainers in the game gave you [a copy of] their outfit if you beat them in battle.

    • JohnNiles

Considering they’ve always lost money for real, I’m guessing they would wind up wearing a barrel- no copy.

      • Suicunesol

Hiker: Oh gee, I’m out of cash. Here–take my clothes, drenched in my sweat.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I hope we get Halloween costumes and outfits from trainers from the past games. Mix and match to make your trainer unique :3

  • Dexward

If I play as the girl, you can bet that I would never cut off or dye that luscious golden hair.

  • I’m hoping the guys don’t get just caps.

    • J_Joestar

      Needs a Top hat.

      • I want that and a newpaper boy cap.

        • Detrimont

that’s my permanent hat in ACNL

          • I’m a sucker for hats so I like to wear many of them, but as soon as I got my hands on a paperboy cap in AC:NL I’ve stuck with it the longest. Still wear it as it’s my favorite kind of hat.

        • And maybe a shirt, waistcoat, and dress pants that the hat can match. Maybe leave the starting hat at home? It wouldn’t make sense though to pay for going bareheaded unless the trainer is really hiding bad hair under it.

  • dragoon_slayer12

It’s settled, Y (my primary record) is male, X is female. So I hope all the clothes get stored in a closet or something so I can buy everything and change on the fly. As simple as this is, this is awesome. Love games that allows me to do this.

    • Christopher Nunes

That’s my plan as well, Y for male and X for female (which is ironic considering the symbols for the version and characters I’m going to play as).

I like the red jacket, I hope there’s a shorter sleeve one with a hood. And I wonder if we can highlight their hair as well?

  • Heisst

I hope you can dress up to fit the theme of your team, kind of like NPC trainers.

  • Presea

    That’s freakin’ adorable <3

  • We’ve wanted this for ages.

    FUCK I am getting hyped.

    • JohnNiles

      Customization, ho~

      • Kai2591

lol that’s a good one *thumbs up*

      • Vash bane

lmao might be the same person from faqs who made a thread about this a month ago

  • Bur

Male trainer should never be allowed to pick his own clothes. The results are disastrous.

  • Warboss Aohd

but can i dress my character up like George Washington, give him skull face paint, an’ give ‘im green Dreadlocks?

    • Göran Isacson

Maybe one day, Warboss. Maybe one day Pokemon can be that glorious, but for now we gotta be happy for the little things.

  • KuroNathan

    *looks at screenshot*
k, you win nintendo YOU HAPPY?! YOU BROKE MY WALLET’S SPIRIT

    • Kai2591

      for the nth time!

  • Aisha Lee

This is awesome news. Heres to hoping that you can get outfits of the main trainers from past gens so you can dress up like them.

  • Kami nii

    please October come faster!!!

  • J_Joestar

They better have Skyla’s Megaman Gloves available!

  • Arcana Wiz

i wanted this since gen 3 and now finally i’ll able to make my unique trainer!

really hopes that costumes and hairstyles of the original three from the manga (red, green, blue) appears here, even as dlc.

  • mojack411

If I can’t spend atrocious amounts of money on DLC for extra clothes and hairstyles I’m cancelling my pre-order right now.

    *read with sarcasm

    • J_Joestar

I’m expecting more for Event-based DiskLockedContent clothes, or else it would end up like Fire Emblem where most people never see Brides and such.

    • ninjabart122

I want clothing designed after cute Pokemon, since I’m a sucker for cute Pokemons.

  • Steven Higgins

It may just be the clothes but the ages look different. The male at the top looks younger than the male in the middle and the female in the middle looks older than the female at the bottom.
So, does this mean we actually have some control over our chars age? Like being able to make them between 10 and 14?

    • Suicunesol

It’s the clothes. What a person wears has a profound effect on how old they appear.

      • Steven Higgins

Too bad, I thought after the older MC in Gen V, we’d actually have a say.

        • Zeik56

Does it matter? Age has no relevance to anything that happens in the game. If you can make them look older with different clothes then for all intents and purposes they are older.

          • Steven Higgins

True, but age has no relevance in any game where you can customize your character. Heck some games blatantly ignore how your character looks, You can have you’re Char built like Schwarzenegger in his prime and some NPCs still call you scrawny. Some people just like having the option of giving a character an apparent age.
At any rate, in my mind the are 12, right between Gen I-IV and Gen V.

  • DingoOnMy40

    its about time

  • Sperium3000

If there are sunglasses in this game, then I’ll slap a “Game of The Year” seal on it right now.

  • fireemblembeast

This is great; it’s what I’ve always wanted! This and multiple save files

  • want to buy style savvy but ant find a copy at my place. I guess this will do

  • Hope the customization also has special outfits available like outfits of past main character Trainers from previous games. They hopefully even have N’s costume as extra goodie.

  • Placido Michael Cortorreal Flo

what i like about is that not only you can buy the clothing…it also seems you can select the color of the clothing before buying it…i saw a screenshot with the desing and color options, xD so when they said you can costumise as much as you want, they really meant it

  • PersonaBull

Now the real question here is are they going to limit the wearable clothing by sex or are they going to be totally awesome for me like Animal Crossing was

    • Slayven19

Since pokemon is bigger around the world its probably by sex to be on the safe side. Besides they could pull that off with animals but its different with human characters.

  • Internet is Crash

Oh sweet Arceus, my prayers have been answered

  • Yes, YES! DAMN IT YES!

  • AkiraScare

yes custamization… this might be the best pkmn game

  • InfectedAI

That’s awesome. Making the jump to 3D without character customization would’ve been a wasted opportunity. I wonder if they’ll have seasonal clothes. Halloween clothes in October, etc. They could do it via Spotpass.

  • lozffvii

    Dammit, LOZ, remain strong!
No matter how cute the girls’ clothing is, remain true to yourself and admire from afar..!

  • Oh hell yeah!

  • Renaldi Saputra

This is the reason why they choose France..

  • Tonton Ramos

I hope they put sports jerseys in there… Basketball Jerseys, Soccer Jerseys, Football Jerseys, any sports jerseys. I would love those on my character…

  • Ixbran

i hope theres a long hair option for males. as a dude with hair past his shoulders, a character representing my self with long hair is a must!

  • DanteMasamune

Personally as of late I usually tend to name the main characters after their actual official names (Red, Blue, Silver, Gold/Ethan, Leaf, Brendan, May, etc)….except for Black and White. I can at least tolerate Lucas and Brendan but Hilbert….f*ck no.

Reasons is because I can’t relate to the characters enough to give them a name…….plus naming is really hard. Its like the early Zelda games where you can name Link but its not like it matters his name was officially Link and when people seem him he is known as Link (same applies to the main characters of Pokemon and their rivals). Even when I named the characters and rivals I just picked a name out of the options really.

However, with X & Y since you can customize your character to make him look different or unique based on your own tastes and preferences….style…it is capable of making them something the past characters were not….relate-able…Well by that I mean we can project how we are physically or what we desire to be (personal preferences) to these characters to the point we….well at least me myself…can feel like we are this character.

So this time around I can feel more obliged to name him or her whatever I want because I can make them look however I want something I haven’t done in a while since……well the last time was my first time playing DP and I stopped doing so and went with their original names by Platinum (then replayed the gameboy games using their official names) to HG/SS….except Black and White but went back to it in Black & White 2.

But hey that is just me.

  • Yesssss. Cannot wait.

Also, once I decide on an avatar, I want to draw a crossover of her visiting my Style Savvy boutique~.

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

I honestly wouldn’t doubt the possibility of a Style Savvy crossover. They did it with Animal Crossing, after all.

      • Good point~! I am hoping to see that happen to some extent now. ♥

  • Getting both versions has just become in more enjoyable. One boy. One girl. Let the customisations commence! :D

Edit: I wish there was more than one save file, or at least make more using the 3DS’s memory card. Woe is me. :(

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Well, I haven’t tried it, but can one not copy the downloaded data of the games onto a computer, move that onto another SD card, then play on two separate cards? Then, one can use the POkemon Bank to transfer between.
Only a theory, but if it were workable …

      • Seems like a lot work, though.

        • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Not really. One simply needs a working blank copy of a game and two SD cards. Save the data on your computer, copy it onto the second SD card and, theoretically, it could work. I might try that now, actually.

  • JunHoward

One of the things I’ve been looking forward to in a new pokemon game. I wonder if you can also customize your pokemon’s appearance(oops PETA animal cruelty alert!!)

  • Croix Zapp

I want a Pikachu skin Jacket!!!

  • Koibito888

I love love love the customization, as much as I love established character appearances because of the manga. I’ll definitely be customizing my Trainer but as a nod to the manga I might name my character ‘X’ or something just to name the character after the game lol

  • Kai2591

    So much win.

The ability to customize your character to your liking is gold.

  • Savage Sui ♥

Awesome~ ^o^/ Character customization was a loong time coming in the main series Pokemon games and I’m glad that it finally did :3

I’m really liking the girl’s costume in the fourth picture down~ it’s pretty cute ^w^ Hopefully we’ll get some some of the protagonist’s costumes from past generations to use on our characters in as well. I’d really like to dress up the FeMC in Rose’s BW2 costume, for example :3 lol.

  • Tienron

what about skin color? i heard everything but that….

  • you know me ;)

    so fucking kawaii

  • miju

  • rebecasunao

    My life is finally complete.
I wonder if clothes are restricted by gender? I hope not.

    • Slayven19

Why wouldn’t they be? Pretty sure going by the other games in the series guys aren’t going to be able to wear a skirt or dress. Trust me it’d cause more harm than good by doing that.

In all honesty I rather it be that way for a pokemon game like this.

  • Leon_Tekashi

I don’t know if I’m the only one who noticed this but doesn’t the first male pic and the second female pic have clothes similar to Gold/Ethan/Jimmy and Lyra?

    • J_Joestar

I can see the similarities, although the 2nd female pic’s clothes only really share the colour palette.

  • 栗場 江理久

    Imma look fabulous.

  • jugss

    tharja costume dlc

  • deathman00789
