Hmmm, should I give this series another try for $20….

It has an initital threshold difficulty you must overcome in order for the game to be really fun. After that, there are several more factors, but it’s not like the FIRST hurdle (the subsequent hurdles are more in lines of starting to enjoy harder difficulty).

Also, I have said this a million times but…PEOPLE YOU CAN PLAY with makes the game 9829380942342 times better. The Wii U players will have a better bet on this part.

For me, it’s not the difficulty threshold that ruins the game, it’s the tedium threshold.

There’s a point you’ll reach fairly quickly, after which every single “boss” will take 10+ minutes of very boring, repetitive combat to kill.

This is why playing online is so much of a necessity. By yourself, the tedium just ruins the game.

        • Ruins72

not for me. 710 hours and not bored yet.

ill say that if you havnt tried a monster hunter game before, try this one out or freedom unite on psp
personally i thought the demo of 3U was not very good

    • SetzerGabbiani

The demo doesn’t really do a very good job of enticing you. It pits you against moderately difficult enemies without really explaining anything, and it also limits your time to 20 min. Not a great showcase if you ask me.

      • InfectedAI

You’ll get demolished at first, but you’ll learn. I went from ‘this is impossible’ to easily beating the first monster in 5 minutes with several different weapons. The second one is a pain because underwater battles suck without a CPP. That and online play is why I’m waiting for MH4.

    • Showmeyomoves

I say go for it. $20 isn’t nothing, but the potential return on that modest investment is enormous (in terms of hours of fun).

A few years ago, I picked up a secondhand copy of Tri for €30, not really expecting anything. After 30-40 hours of messing around and thinking the game was “alright but nothing special”, something suddenly just clicked. I had beaten my first challening monster, the Barroth.

Since then, I’ve spent hundreds and hundreds of hours on Tri and 3 Ultimate. It’s now my favorite franchise in video gaming.

So for $20, I say hell yeah. You may end up not liking it, in which case, sure, you’ve wasted $20, or you could end up discovering your new favorite game series. I say it’s worth the risk.

  • gimpytroll

The wiiU version will be $20 by xmas

  • SetzerGabbiani

I highly recommend the title. For pure content, you really can’t go wrong with MH. The barrier to entry may seem daunting, but as a noob (started with Wii U version of MH3U), I stuck with it, learned how to effectively use my favorite weapon (the Switch Axe), and it is now my most played game. Highly recommended if you have a bit of patience.
