Sonic will be returning as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Nintendo announced in a Nintendo Direct presentation this morning.
Sonic and Mega Man just like the Archie Comics! SO EXCITED!
Yup. Two blue video game icons together again… This time, in a video game~!
Now they need their OWN game.
You already know. GO BLUE TEAM!
Now let’s get Betty and Veronica xD
OMG Namco Bandai delivers, this is the best news for Brawl yet. Now if they can get Tails and then Naruto too!
Tails, sure if they can come up with a decent moveset.
Naruto…I don’t think anime characters work in smash bros.
I thought that too until I saw Solid Snake beating up Jigglypuff.
Smash Bros can make anything work, but that doesn’t mean they should, I agree anime characters should stay out.
No character from Naruto or Dbz needs to be in Smash Bros.
As interesting as that sounds, that’s not happening.
even though Naruto, or even Goku or whatever for that matter aren’t Video game character…
Well, with this we already had three of the biggest gaming franchise in 90’s. Now, if only we can get Bonk’s and Klonoa inside, it will be the biggest Smash.^_^
Klonoa would be cool!
Klonoa is Namco right? I get the feeling that Tales of Symphonia’s Lloyd may take the spot and that we are only getting one third party per company, but I’ll have more of a reason to go into the Wii and PlayStation library either way and have a blast with whoever. >_>
If I had to bet on a Namco character, even though I’d like to see Mappy or Klonoa, Pacman has the highest probability.
Klonoa seems more like a mascot like than Lloyd, I really can’t see just Lloyd being a rep for Namco.
Lloyd appeared in Tales of Symphonia and led the cast. Whenever you talk about the GameCube, that game gets mentioned and whenever you talk about RPGs or Nintendo exclusives (well not really, but it felt like it was – okay and I know Lloyd is on the PS3 with both games now), ToS gets mentioned.
Klonoa feels more mascoty maybe just because it’s a humanoid animal (>_>), but ToS has that sort of impact. A Tales of Director has already expressed interest in seeing Tales (the “Has to be in a Nintendo game” rule is still a thing – so Abyss’ Luke has a shot) in Smash: http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/40678/namco-bandai-director-would-love-tales-characters-to-be-in-smash-bros-wii-u/
That said, Namco characters aren’t a priority so we may get squat, I’m not expecting three third parties like last time: http://operationrainfall.com/e3-2013-smash-bros-namco-not-priority/
symphonia got a ps2 release too and i feel like Luke from abyss has even less of a shot because abyss 3ds is just a port of a game that wasn’t even on a nintendo console to begin with… i’d just personally rather not see any tales of characters in general though. I’ve just never heard much talk about symphonia either so it seems weird to have symphonia be the mascot for it but that’s probably just because i’m inept in tales of popularity.
What is your take on Solid Snake then? Snake only appeared in a bad port of MG on the NES and a port of MGS1 which was best known on the PS1.
Rereleasing a game for another system with bonus features isn’t a problem, as the reverse (getting the less notable and more gimped versions) wasn’t an issue.
If you don’t want to see Tales characters in the game, cool, but they (Phantasia, Symphonia, Abyss, Innocence, Hearts, Graces and more) have a shot going off prior third party appearances. If you want to hear people talk about Symphonia, you should go to a Tales of board, any of them on GameFAQs, especially the one for the PS3 HD rerelease.
Wasn’t Snake overall a request from someone though? It was something that never would have crossed my mind outside of something of a pipedream on a message board and it still felt pretty weird but I know zero about the character (i’ve actually played symphonia and abyss). I don’t think Snake has a shot at all at getting in now though.
Yes, he was a request from Kojima (based on interest from his son apparently), but Namco have also expressed interest in getting Tales characters. >_>
I think Snake has a lower chance now, but he has popped up on the 3DS (this generation, not a generation or two ago). I never expected Snake, either, but he had happened, he could happen again with much work on the character while the amount of work on a new character would be much more. >_>
Well I never said it could never happen, just that it’d be weird and unlikely for either. (and i could do without tales people) As for Snake though, I think it’s less likely because MGSV is coming out in the same year as this and the PS4/XBOXOne are out soon too, Nintendo hasn’t done well in their first year and now their competition is coming and I’m sure MGSV is going to be a big reason for people to want to buy the other console. Having Snake in would be almost like helping them to advertise a current competitors game. I think it’d be strange to have him star in two exclusive titles for different companies simultaneously too.
Despite the fact that ToS had a HUGE success on the Gamecube, the Wii got just one horrible game (tos2) and a average/incomplete game (Graces).
And, as Spirit Macardi said, Namco has basically given the finger, especially for every Nintendo fan, by releasing ToS HD exclusively for the PS3, skipping the Wii U completely.
No, i don’t think we will ever see Lloyd in any smash game. I don’t even think we will ever see again another Tales Of game on any non Sony console since Baba stated publicaly he want to alienate fans to Sony consoles when he said that “fan base is only on ps3” bullshit.
Wrong. Klonoa would be F***ING AWESOME! :D
Granted I’d settle for Bravoman too, since he’d have a pretty unique moveset and his ShiftyLook comic is absolutely hilarious. Tales seems unlikely since Namco has basically given the finger to everyone but Sony as far as that series goes.
I just hope they don’t use Pac-Man. He’d basically just be a crappy version of Kirby.
But…Klanoa’s pretty much a straight Playstation character besides that remake on Wii and that one GBA game. It would be awesome, but I dont see that one happening. Especially given the fact that Namco has all but forgotten about him :(
Actually there’s THREE GBA games, though one was only released in Japan. That makes four games on Nintendo to Sony’s three (and one Wonderswan).
He isn’t entirely gone though. He has a comic running on ShiftyLook that’s pretty good, and his creator is still around and kicking even though Namco doesn’t do anything with him.
Oh for real? I only remember one… but either way, it would be nice! But I just checked Wiki and the Wii remake is more recent than I remember it being (2009), so it MAY be possible, I mean Megamans last game was 2010 so…
I’m cool with Sonic. I know some people who are going to be mad as hell, though.
Some people I know treat smash pretty seriously, and feel like he’s not really viable and would be a waste of a character slot.
Hes not a clone, and hes from a platformer. Hes almost as viable as megaman (who originated on a nintendo console even), so I dont expect people to care much.
Maybe THATS why they revealed toon link so recently, so that everyone would be too busy complaining about him to complain about sonic.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! :D
So, there won’t be a CGI reveal video :P
Its hard to top Live and Learn but I still love the Sonic Heroes theme, besides that looks like the game is going to have a Lost Worlds level.
Its great to see ol’ Sonic back in smash 4. He is my most used character next to kirby.
yes sonic vs mega man…..what about snake?
Now reveal Snake to have a TRUE crossover fight.
While I don’t feel like Snake matches with platforming classics like Megaman, Mario and Sonic, I would like to see Snake return as well. He was great fun in regardless of having a different background and lesser connection to Nintendo.
I’m pretty sure that Namco has a good shot for third party slot as well with someone from Tales or Pacman.
Considering that Sega and Nintendo are close friends right now and the exclusive sonic titles for wii U, it was something expected, surprised that they anounced it so early though.
The one I´m not sure is going to be in this game is snake, but i rather have someone else instead of him, with Kojima catering only to PS4/Xbox and not bothering with the wii he certainly doesn´t belong here
Snake was always kind of an oddity in Brawl, as he never really “belonged” to begin with. As he’d only been in the remake Twin Snakes and the NES original METAL GEAR (albeit in a completely different design). So yeah, I can see Snake getting the boot, especially considering he wasnt that great a character (in Brawl) to begin with…
Yeah I liked that Snake was in Brawl but he always did feel a bit out of place. I’d be fine with them kicking him out to add another 3rd party character instead. A Castlevania character would be pretty cool, and a Namco one seems like an obvious choice as well.
I don’t think he’ll make it in, this is a big game for nintendo to try to bounce back and with and next year MGSV is out and it’s probably going to be big for the PS4/XBOX1 so having Snake in would be like helping their competition in a way.
“Come on, step it up!” Yeah, one of my favorite quotes from Sonic. I can already see myself playing Sonic vs. Mega Man. *hype*
Think of all the fangasms made at that announcement……
He was announced in October for Brawl too. Is October a Sonic month?
Now we need a Konami representative (Snake or Simon Belmont) and a Namco Bandai representative (Klonoa, Pacman, or Lloyd Irving would do).
Simon Belmont over Snake anyday (for Smash Bros, anyways, not in general) . I just hope they dont use his lord of shadows reboot design.
As for namco, im putting all my hopes into lloyd.
I would be very interested if they picked his Castlevania Judgement design, just because of the backlash that got. Still need to buy that game and start the series…
I like his Judgement design, but you have to remember what sakurai said about megamans design: “keeping his nes look was a must”. he would probably take the same attitude with simon, and im perfectly happy with that.
I like the Judgement designs myself, but I have the bias of never playing Castlevania (while watching Sequelitis and liking a few tunes) and loving Obata’s work on Death Note and Bakuman. >_> I remember a backlash so I expected you to say a flat “NO!”…
Yep, I expect him to stick to the original design (there must be some official artwork related to the NES games or his other appearances somewhere) and work with it. It’s a good call.
well im a fudanshi so you cant expect me to dislike anything obata x3 i just dont think any designs other than the nes or snes one really fit into smash bros.
But look at Samus she is in her Metroid Prime incarnation.
but she isnt a third party character. Sakurai wants the third party characters who originated on Nintendo consoles to reflect those apperances. at least thats the Impression that I get. to be fair, judgment and los both ended up on nintendo consoles, too.
I’m gonna cry if Snake doesn’t come back.
Sonic is a character I don’t mind returning, but I wouldn’t care if he hadn’t. Hes certainly unique, and he originates from a platformer, so he fits in pretty well. I just hope he gets a new side special.
Snake is cool, but he doesnt really fit. At least hes more unique than TOON LINK, ugh.
> game by Nintendo
> developed by Namco
> has Capcom’s Mega Man
> has Sega’s Sonic
What a great way to bring 4 companies together.
music from Nobuo Uematsu then it will be complete
Don’t you mean “music from Square Enix” in this case? Since Nobuo is from it.
Now we wait for Solid Snake XD
Wow that’s surprising :O Hope snake returns too :)
