Introducing Mega Charizard X And Mega Charizard Y In Pokémon X And Y

By Ishaan . October 2, 2013 . 8:02am

Mewtwo isn’t the only Pokémon with two Mega Evolutions in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y—Charizard will have two as well, named Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y. Take a look at the two below:

The Mega Charizard evolution revealed previously is, in fact, Mega Charizard Y, according to The Pokémon Company. Mega Charizard Y’s Special Attack increases significantly from its evolution, and its Ability changes to Drought, increasing the power of Fire-type moves. It can learn Blast Burn as a move.

Meanwhile, Mega Charizard X, being introduced today, has the Tough Claws ability, which raises the power of moves that make direct contact. Mega Charizard X can learn the Dragon-type move Dragon Tail, which forces the opposing Pokémon to switch out, in addition to doing damage.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y will be available on October 12th worldwide.

  • Prinnydoom

Damn picked the wrong one >__<

  • Raharu95

So Charizard is being finally acknowledge as a drahon like many people wanted¿ He only needed to go one step beyond to finally get the Dragon Skin X3 (Note: Not saying Charizard X is Dragon type, since I’m not actually sure)

    • zaidandzhadow

It is it’s confirmed on the IGN page, it’s stupid cause the one design that looks more dragon-y it’s the one that’s FLYING-FIRE.

      • Armane

Dragon fire is canonically blue in Pokémon though, and they look about as dragon-y as each other/normal Charizard.

    • Guest

Both versions of Mega Charizard are sadly still Fire/Flying.

If the x Version was Fire/Dragon than I would get X over Y.

      • jugss

It is fire/dragon check serebii or ign. I mean Mega charizard X is fire/dragon.

        • Virevolte

On the official website of your country too, probably. It’s the case for mine.

  • Vesperion

    Waiting for Mega Blastoise X

  • Azzrem

    woooohooooooooooooo imm readdyyyy!!

  • anthony apduhan

This Mega Charizard is the one responsible why Mega Mewtwo exists.

P.S. I watched Pokemon Origins… and I can’t believe my eyes he will be revealed in that show before this.

  • Nice Boat Quatro
    • zaidandzhadow

my god where the flying fuc* are your thousand upvotes, come people upvote this guy immediately, period

      • Nice Boat Quatro

To be fair I also got some dislikes for making a Digimon joke.

        • zaidandzhadow

in my country someone troll-asked: it has agumon?
I laughed really hard, but there was the internet fags who takes everything too seriously on the internet, really hate those kind of fags.

  • Jordan Ortiz

I’m going to be severely disappointed if the other starters don’t get alternate X/Y evolutions Charizard gets all the love leaving poor Venasaur in the dust.

    • zaidandzhadow

      like always have.

    • Renaldi Saputra

      they overrate Charizard once again

      • zaidandzhadow

come on charizard is not overrate it’s just popular, you can hand-throw a little rock and kill a charizard

        • Renaldi Saputra

but, still, he’s overrated, not just popular..
I see many pokemon “fans” and also many genwunners said Charizard is the most powerful, strongest, blahblahblah..

if no, then they wouldn’t make 2 mega evo for charizard exclusively

          • Anesia Hunter

although i’ve never seen people talk about charizard like that, (especially those who do meta-game battles) i think part of the reason so many people make a big deal out of charizard is simply out of nostalgia. since for many who have been playing since gen 1, charmander was their very first pokemon.

          • zaidandzhadow

I can understand why, he’s completely lovable, i even bought one shiny from a pokemon dealer but would never carry him to a tournament really, like i love empoleon and good-badass looking pokemons, especially fully evolved or legendary, except celebi, victiny and those cutie pies.

          • Croix Zapp

charizard is popular, but jolteon is powerful in my book..

  • Herok♞

So is there any reason why people would get Pokemon Y over X at this point? I mean they get both Dragon Fire Charizard and Awesome looking Mewtwo. I seriously hope Y has something to make it worth while

    • J_Joestar

tough claw sounds alright, but infinite sunlight can help a whole team built around it rather than just his own attack power.

and as he will still be vulnerable to stealth rocks either way (you need to switch-in before you can Mega) so a Lead to set up Sunlight is probably more reliable,

    • Because other people are getting X?

I really don’t care too much about whatever goes to what, especially when it comes to ubers or things fixing to potentially be as such. Never really cared.

That said I’ll -probably- be getting Y because I know so many getting X because hur hur X is adult humor.

      • Learii

everyone I know buying Y I don’t know why maybe because the art box look cooler or maybe the legendary pokemon? but I buying X

    • Curan_Altea

I’ve always opted for the Y version.
You personal opinions don’t make any version better.

      • Herok♞

True my opinion doesn’t make any version any better or worse, but people have been asking for Charizard to be a Dragon for years and it would make sense that people may go to that one instead of the other one that has normal charizard with a different ability.

        • Necr0naut

Sorry but, Dragon type or not, Mega-Charizard X is way too hideous to go anywhere near my pokeballs.

          • FlyingPony

It look very cool to me.

          • Necr0naut

It’s mainly the “wings” and shoulder horns that make it a resounding NO for me. There’s also something about the face (maybe the nose) that’s not sitting well with me but I can’t put my finger on what.

    • Strain42

What about people who don’t like Mega Evolutions and prefer Yveltal to Xerneas? Should they still get X instead of Y too?

      • Herok♞

Well we don’t know at this point if we could get the second legendary in the game though, I prefer Yvetlal as well but the mega evolutions swayed me to X.

        • Strain42

Honestly, the only reason I’m torn at all is because one gets Skrelp while the other gets Swirlix and I’d like both of those Pokemon. So I’m kinda hoping one of them is like a Petilil/Cottonee from B/W type deal.

          • Herok♞

well they will probably be common pokemon so you could always just trade with a friend to get the other.

          • EvidenceLawl

As well as the Mega Evolutions. Don’t forget everyone, the hold items can be traded over too! So if someone wanted a MegaCharizard X with a Clauncher and Skrelp in Pokemon Y, as long as you have a buddy, it’s possible! :)

          • J_Joestar

it still depends on how we get Mega Stones.
Unless you can buy just Mega Stones at the department store, Breeding a Pokemon for trading is probably a lot easier.

      • zaidandzhadow

no we should buy X get mega evolutions and then change the game or sell it and play Y till the end of story

    • Wappuli

i actually like the Y mega evolution for both of those more than X versions. I also like Y’s legendary and boxart more.
Although I’m still not sure if I’ll get this game.

    • Sardorim

      I like Drought Mega Charizard.

He even benefits from STAB Fire attacks while things like Dragon Tail don’t get STAB benefit as Mega Charizard isn’t a Dragon type so direct contact isn’t all that grand.

Yveltal can participate in Flying battles, Xerneas cannot.

      • jugss

but Mega Charizard X is Fire/Dragon and learns Outrage,Flare blitz and Dragon Dance.

        • mike dickson

wait he could learn that sweet jesus hes much better then the Y one by far

        • Dark Zerato

Wait. They actually change Charizard into a Dragon now ?

          • Herok♞

yup thats why I say Charizard X is the why to go

          • natchu96

I think one of the MegaMewtwos had a type change as well. I think one was half-Fighting.

And I think MegaAmpharos is a dragon anyway.

          • Herok♞

MegaMewtwo X is the one that is half fighting and MegaAmpharos is a dragon as well.

        • Dark Zerato

Then I hope they change Gyarados as well. Why is it flying instead of dragon ?

        • Sardorim

He’s actually a Dragon type? Don’t see any mention of it here.

Where did you hear that he’s Dragon/Fire?

          • zaidandzhadow

remember to read completely a sentence like the part that it clearly states that he’s referring to Gyarados

      • J_Joestar

well X is a Dragon now, but i also think that Drought is a better choice.

Assuming that Tough Claws acts like Iron Fist (the most similar existing ability), it would only be a boost of about 20%, while Drought will give a 50% Fire boost as well as weakening Water attacks for the entire team.

And with Normal Charizard’s base stats leaning towards Special attack, it wouldn’t be surprising if Y’s buffed SP. Atk will be higher than X’s buffed Atk.

    • Guest

correction charizard Y is fire/ flying just saying

    • Leon_Tekashi

To be honest, they’re trying to make X and Y both even so we’ll see what they have in store for Y.

    • Kai2591

I, for one, prefer an orange and fire-focused Charizard, Yveltal, and Mega Mewtwo Y :)

    • SerRompalot

Because people prefer Mewtwo Y and Y’s legendary. And while Charizard X is better than Charizard Y (to me), the advantage is only nominal since I hardly plan on Megavolving. I’m getting Y for the badass-looking legendary.

    • FirstaLasto

I like mewtwo y much better than mewtwo x (fighting type mewtwo? lame-o), and ys legendary is cooler imo, so i think im going with that one.
that said, charizard x is way cooler than y, so hopefully i can transfer charzardite x to y.

    • Fitzkrieg

I’m actually pretty sure that Mega Charizard X is either Fire/Flying or Dragon/Flying because it’s still able to participate in aerial battles.

      • Steams

He’s Fire/Dragon. His ability to participate is because he has wings or because he changes types while already in the air.

      • Steven Higgins

Ah, but Charizard enters battle in it’s base form which is still Fire/Flying, so it should be able to participate regardless of the Mega Evolution’s typing.

    • Steams

MegaCharizard Y still has a better design, I like my Psychic only Mewtwo/MegaMewtwo Y, Yveltal > Xerneas, Skrelp is awesome, and there’s probably gonna be other reasons once we find out more. ;)

    • Luke Blackwood

Uh, opinions? I found Charizard Y much cooler than Charizard X (If I’m not mixing them up and Red Charizard is X instead of Y). Yveltal is also cooler than Xerneas for me. So, you see, I have plenty of reasons for getting Y rather than X :)

      • Herok♞

Charizard X is the black one you have them backward Y is the red one

        • Luke Blackwood

That’s exactly what I thought. Like I said, “I’m not mixing them up and Red Char is X instead of Y”, so I thought that Red Char was Y xD

          • Herok♞

“If I’m not mixing them up and Red Charizard is X instead of Y” is what you said, here since you are just confusing me take this link:

          • Luke Blackwood

Ok, to clear things up: I thought that Red Char was Y and Black Char was X. I said that, if I wasn’t mixing things up and Black Char ended up being Y instead of X, those were my thoughts (Y being cooler than X).

So, long story short: I find Red Charizard to be cooler than Black one.

  • Nice Boat Quatro

    Charizard Armor Digivolve to! Rairizardmon!

    • Renaldi Saputra

      nope, DeathLizardmon

  • mike dickson

glad im buying X i would of go for Y but i don’t like the legendary that much i mean hes dark / flying i prefer honchkrow over him any day including deers is nintendos thing now so yeah

  • Brandonmkii

Let me know when mega Marowak shows up.

    • If it does, I hope it’s worth it. Thick Club is the only thing making Marowak at all usable right now as it is.

    • Necr0naut

      ^^^^^^^^Oh God THIS^^^^^^^^

  • AuraGuyChris

Calling it. Next generation, only Eevee will get an honest-to-good evolution than a Mega.

    • J_Joestar

watch Eevee get a Mega Evolution that remains Normal-type.

  • J_Joestar

it is cool and all, but having Dragon-typing isn’t that big a deal anymore…

    • jugss

fire resist fairy so mega charizard X takes neutral damage

      • J_Joestar

it is more a comment on how half of it’s STAB attacks can be easily neutralized by a type that everyone is probably gonna want to carry something of.
And Charizard isn’t particularly Bulky anyways, especially with Stealth Rock eating half his HP on switch in.

    • Zirixion Zwelt

I never get tired laughing at this kinds of comic strip… *saves like mad*

  • Kai2591

Can someone tell me what Pokemon is that at 0:43? the opposing one.

  • Solomon_Kano

They just keep making me happier and happier that I picked X.

    • Christopher Nunes

Y is my main and I’m loving Mega Charizard Y form the most because of the abilities, but X looks awesome as well! A Black Charizard, I can dig that.

Though I’m getting BOTH versions regardlessly. Just a few more days now! ^_^

Yes! Pokemon X is paid off at Gamestop, now all I need is for the 12th to swing by!

I’m going with Squirtle and Fennekin, so if I’m getting Charmander, it’ll have to be through trading.

  • Ranza

    Holy shit it’s Bahamut !!!

  • FFmax

    Dat Charizard.

  • Azzrem

wake me up when october 11 end..

  • SlickRoach

  • DarthSithZero

Really!?!? Are they going this far, it’s like the digi-eggs evolutions, soon DNA evolutions.

    • KuroNathan

      Done and done

      • AuraGuyChris

Is this REALLY an official comic page?
If so, awesome! I want to see this and overcome Venastoise!

        • KuroNathan

Yup, its from the pokemon adventure manga.

    • Steven Higgins

      Black Kyurem/White Kyurem.

      • DarthSithZero

You’re right, i forgot about that.

  • lozffvii

    THAT’S IT!

    • Renaldi Saputra

      is that hard mode?
      I don’t think so

  • Anime10121

Pokemon X is getting the best megavolutions! I’m loving THIS Mega Charizard FAR more than Mega Y!

  • Zangetsu777

  • Ferrick

hmmm, i gotta say, Mega Charizard X looks better than Y, but then again, Y won’t get kicked over by fairy types… decisions decisions

    • J_Joestar

well on the bright side at least it is neutral damage since fire resists fairy.

    • Renaldi Saputra

fire/dragon only take 1x damage from fairy..

fire/dragon ‘s weakness are only rock, ground, and dragon
but it has many many resistances

meanwhile fire/flying ‘s are water, electric, rock (4x)
      but not many resistances

  • DanteMasamune

“Mega Charizard X will be a Fire/Dragon type”

Still gets destroyed by stealth rock in normal form since you need to Mega Evolve after switching out.

    • Steven Higgins

      I haven’t heard about the switch-out requirement.

      • DanteMasamune

Well if you switch into a Charizard after stealth rocks is set up it is still hit by Stealth Rocks because you need to Mega Evolve the Pokemon after its out so it will still be hit by the said Stealth Rocks before it can Mega Evolve. So the only way to avoid the 4x effect of Stealth Rocks is to Mega Evolve before an opponent can set up Stealth Rocks….which seems due to this Mega Charizard X everyone will want to get Steath Rocks to do heavy damage to Charizard before they become a threat.

        • Steven Higgins

But what if Charizard is your lead Pokemon? Can it still Mega Evolve without having to be called back then sent out again?
That’s what I meant by “Switch Out Requirement”

          • J_Joestar

Pretty sure that it remains Mega when you switch it out of battle. It is only the very first switch-in that should put it at risk of a 4x Stealth Rock.

          • DanteMasamune

I’m not sure. They never stated or even hinted if you switch a Pokemon out in its Mega state and send it back in its still in its Mega state.

I guess you’ll find out as soon as the game is out.

          • Steven Higgins

No, no. Forget Stelth Rock for a second. All I’m asking is, can I Mega Evolve Charizard even if it’s the first Pokemon out in battle?

  • Chaos_Knight

Megazard X shall be Megaman X’s steed!

  • Renaldi Saputra

genwunners will be very happy and eventually get X series..

and now MegaCharizard X is very OP

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

  • Captain Levi

    • Renaldi Saputra
