Pokémon X And Pokémon Y Pre-Orders Exceed 1.26 Million In Japan

By Ishaan . October 3, 2013 . 9:28am

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y pre-orders in Japan have exceeded 1.26 million, according to sales tracker Media Create (via: Famitsu). This makes the two the highest pre-ordered Nintendo 3DS games in Japan to date.

Pokémon X and Y will be released on October 12th, and when they are, it should be interesting to see how first-week sales of the two games shape up, especially considering that they are the first pair of Pokémon RPGs on the 3DS, and that the system’s userbase has a fair bit of room to grow, with just 13 million units sold in Japan thus far.

For comparison, when Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were released in 2006, the two games sold 1.58 million copies in their first week on store shelves. Then, when Pokémon Black and White were released in 2010, the two games sold 2.55 million in week 1.

That’s quite the significant increase in sales, and considering that pre-orders for X and Y are already over 1.26 million, it’s safe to assume the two titles will handily outdo Diamond and Pearl’s first-week sales. The more interesting question is how they will perform in comparison to Black and White, and how much more room there is for the Pokémon series to grow beyond Black and White’s figures with future games.

If anything, I wonder if the games will manage to get Pokemon back to Gameboy popularity levels, or at least close. None of the GBA or DS games managed to get even near that.

For now, the first goal should be surpassing D/P (so it should sell about 18 millions).

They say simultaneous releases, but stores in Canada, Italy, and Australia are already breaking the street dates. Sure, nintendo reps are flying out to see which stores are breaking them, but that does not mean they can take the copies sold to the customers there. So, it’s not really a simulateneous release anymore.

I bet Lawsuits are incoming. People getting fired for sure.

I would think Nintendo is most certainly not happy. I can’t imagine anything could make them madder.

      • British_Otaku

The only way they can control such a thing is if they ONLY release games through a digital store front, I imagine Nintendo aren’t happy, but nothing really can be done about a few smaller retailers figuring that they may as well sell the stock early before people shuffle over to the net for Christmas, GAME or GameStop.

I can imagine something would make Nintendo madder, if there was a means to download games and play them on your PC or 3DS for few, anti piracy be damned like the later Pokemon games on the DS. >_> Given that the launch is simultaneous internationally, I would have little incentive for Pokemon, but Nintendo wouldn’t like that one bit.

Supposedly, heads are rolling. Now whether that’s just a figure of expression, I am unsure.

    • KyoyaHibari

Guess I better start looking for some stores ;P

      • Drani

And if they don’t have any make sure you bite the store clerks to death :P

      • Hau To

Oh you. Hahaha. Too bad there’s only big retailers where I’m at.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

They did take copies away from a few of the people already lol

      • Hau To

If that’s the case, I hope they got their money back. I heard the Kostedin guy gave up his copy to protect his friend. I didn’t hear anything about them taking away copies away from other people. This is new to me.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Nintendo shanked them and dumped them out back. Then they went and shanked the high street rollers bankrolling off the depraved cash.

          • Hau To

Oh dear. Should I be giving my money to a company that shank leakers? Haha…

          • J_Joestar

Well if you pay up nice and proper, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about…

          • Kai2591

            brutal

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Only if you;re named Shanks

yeah, but they arent selling anything in mass. its still going to be a global release, for the most part.

    • Bobby Jennings

It’s still a simultaneous release regardless. You can’t blame Nintendo because the mom and pop stores aren’t doing their job right.

  • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Im interested in seeing how many are sold first week worldwide

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Its going to be sold out fast……even people who made fun of me for playing pokemon are going out and buying a copy.

    • Kai2591

      That’s not the X I’m looking for.

  • Skyer Ist

Amazing! 1.28 without hardware bundles, which are super popular. And many gamers will buy game digitally… This launch gonna be massive…

  • IxisNaugus

What was the DS’ installed base in japan at the time Diamond and Pearl, and Black and White released there? For comparisons sake.

  • Suicunesol

I’ll betcha Siliconera already has their advance review copy of X/Y and are going to post a play test article next week. :P

(I’m a bit curious about whether Nintendo lets review sites keep the copy, or if they’re forced to return the cartridge.)
