JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle Will Have Localization Changes In The West

By Kris . October 17, 2013 . 11:31am

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle will have character names changed for the west, Namco Bandai have shared with Siliconera.

Because JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is heavily inspired by music, it’s always been a challenge to bring to the west in both game and manga form. Characters with names like Devo and Vanilla Ice are renamed things like D’bo and Iced during localization in order to skirt any sort of copyright issues. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle is no exception.

That said, there are a couple of interesting aspects to the game’s localization. For one thing, Namco Bandai are working with JoJo publisher Shueisha to make sure that the localized names for the characters fit with Hirohiko Araki’s intentions “while not offending any party”. Additionally, the localized names will be matched to the U.S. and European versions of the recent anime to ensure consistency.

Namco also confirmed to us that the U.S. version of the game will retain the Japanese text that appears onscreen mid-fight (since, as CyberConnect2 president Hiroshi Matsuyama commented, Japanese sound effects are also present in the localized version of the manga) and the Japanese voice acting. So, the mid-fight 無駄s and オラs will remain intact when the game reaches the west.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle is set for a 2014 release in the U.S. and Europe.

So long as i get to play Jojo i guess

  • KyoyaHibari

Wait…”Additionally, the localized names will be matched to the U.S. and European versions of the recent anime to ensure consistency.” Is that a hint at a localized Jojo 2012 anime I see? *crosses fingers*

    • Pdugna

Yes all should know the greatness of this series :D
Also be cool if the show if shown on TV is done on Toonami seems to be the only relevant Anime/Cartoon block left in NA

    • Spirit Macardi

That or they’re referring to the abridged series x3

    • JoJo_649

Exactly what I was thinking, it sure is a great time to be a Jojo fan in america.

    • Ty Austin

First thing that popped out at me while reading this article as well.

Localization of the anime would be great. But more than anything, I hope we hear something on story arc 3.

    • XYZ_JolteonZ980

But there was no US version of the recent anime?

      • Herok♞

which is why the tease in the article is making fans excited

        • XYZ_JolteonZ980

I dont know, seemed morelike confusion on someones part than a tease for something.

          • Herok♞

I don’t think something be done to ensure consistency is something that would be an accident but we will see.

    • Pinwheel

Please. PLEEAAAAAAASE be true. I’ve been aching for this to happen. ACHING I TELL YOU.

As for the name changes? It was to be expected. So long as we get it, I don’t mind.

      Oh yeah. ”

“Characters with names like Devo and Vanilla Ice are renamed things like D’bo and Iced during localization in order to skirt any sort of copyright issues.”
This isn’t actually entirely true. I recently ordered volumes 13-15, and in the manga his name is actually still Vanilla Ice.

      • SirTeffy

They’re referring to the arcade game by Capcom, not the manga.

        • Pinwheel

Oh, whoops. My bad, guess I was wrong on that one.

        • Legendairy

Also the Part 3 OVA sub had the names changed, too.

    • http://2donly.com/ Mahdrills

My only concern is that if they had to change some names for the game, they probably had to change them for the anime. It’s not as big of a deal for the game (though it really makes you hate copyright laws), but imagine a dub actually using those names. Or even subs would probably need to be changed to fit (Unless I’m mistaken about something in the copyright laws)

On the other hand, localization means slightly cheaper prices for DVDs and such. I know some friends who’d be pretty happy with that.

      • doubleO7

Name changes for the English dub would be fine since all you’re hearing is the audio. The subs is where it could be a problem since you’d be hearing one name in the dialogue but reading another in the subtitles at the same time.

    • http://crono-trigger.tumblr.com/ SilverCrono

Was just about to say this. For once, localization was actually confirmed. F*CK YES

    • Legendairy

The Japanese Blurays included an English subtitle track. They’re just gonna use names like Whammu, Eisidisi and Kars which is how they were written in Enlgish for the anime.

    • landlock

      Viz is the rumor.

      • KyoyaHibari

I would imagine it being Viz first and foremost. They released the manga and dealt with the naming affairs once already, so it would be easier for them to do the anime as well I take it. I just hope they bring their A-game.

  • BizarreJelly

It’s understandable – it’s either this or no English release at all.

    • Hol Horse

Still I hope they WON’T change Zeppeli. And Speedwagon. Just no.

      • benhofb

So you wouldn’t want to play as Zippy and Speed?!

        • SlickRoach

I wish we could play as SpeedWagon D:

      • GVmanX

Zeppeli is distant enough from Zeppelin, I think. As for Speedwagon, they could call him Robert Edward Oswald Speedwagon every time he appears instead of using his initials.

  • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

Wait, the new JoJo’s anime got a US release? I was unaware of this. Might be nice if they could get it on Adult Swim.

    • doubleO7

It has not received an official english release yet. But I agree that when it does it would make an awesome addition to AS’s Toonami.

  • Jesse

I’d be more surprised if the names WEREN’T changed.

Please, let no one flip out over this. DX

  • Brandonmkii

Completely expected. After all, they did make some changes when the manga was released here. At least the changes will be supervised by Araki and company.

  • ivanchu77

Glad they included the japanese voice acting! can´t wait to play this

  • Herok♞

Ok, still glad we are getting it, I just hope they can come up with some cool alternatives for names.

  • James Williams

I just hope we get names that sound sort of similar to them, what was oingo boingo changed to again?
I’ll 100% support this though, so happy to see this coming.

  • Cephrien

I’m planning on importing the japanese version of the game, ‘cuz I honestly don’t feel like waiting until next year to play it. :P

I just hope players of the japanese version can play with US version players.

  • SlickRoach

Glad to hear about the Japanese voice acting and sound effects still intact. It may be a stretch but I wonder if a subtitle option will be available, but then again things like Akira shouting “Red Hot Chili Pepper!” During his GHA make me think otherwise. But without knowing the dialogue you don’t “get” the whole crossover experience as much though…

  • Sentsuizan_93

    Understandable.
Localization with name changes to avoid copyright breaches > No localization

    • ronin4life

I don’t understand why it is a problem outside Japan but not inside…

      ?.?

      • Sentsuizan_93

Famous references. In Part 2, The Pillar Men: Wham, Cars and AC/DC were all references to famous bands outside of Japan. Wham from the UK, AC/DC from Austrailia and Cars from America. Part 3, Vanilla Ice is another reference to a famous singer from America. Pretty sure there are other references made, but those ones I know from the top of my head. Also, copyright breaches are a dangerous landmine to trip on when it comes to how well known the artists referenced are, so unfortunately, it’s change them appropriately, or don’t localize the game.

        • WyattEpp

Most of everything named in JoJo’s is a band reference of some sort. Even back to Phantom Blood. Robert Edward O. Speedwagon? That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

      • GVmanX

Music copyright, at least with Western music, is rarely enforced in Japan the same way it is in the US. Also, music licenses for US music is much, much cheaper there. That’s why Speed Grapher has Girls On Film as it’s intro song in Japan but not the US release.

  • Ikki

Please don’t change names for the European version. The manga is published with no name changes in France and Italy.

    • doubleO7

Thats true, however, as far as I know all english versions of the manga changed the names, and since they’re specifically talking about the english localization…

If France/Italy get their own localized versions then the names will probably be left alone, but if the English version is what gets released throughout Europe, well, I think you can see where I’m going with this.

  • FlamingFirewire

Is this game going to be released in a Physical Edition over here?

    • Hines Green III

That’s what I wanna know too. Sony America has a habit of not retailing games with no dub.

      • NeoStrayCat

Well, that doesn’t seem to be a problem with the Yakuza series, KOF XIII, and Aquapazza, the latter that both games have retail releases with JP voices for NA/US.

        • Gyro Zeppeli

I’m assuming that their policies might have changed in recent years.

        • Hines Green III

It sure doesn’t happen for One Piece Pirate Warriors. Then again that could be just a Koei thing.

          • NeoStrayCat

Actually no, Pirate Warriors (both of them in NA/US, of course) got the digital treatment. EU though gets retail releases within certain games like that.

  • Monterossa

Good. I’m so glad that japanese effects will be remained. オラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラオラ

  • fool

That’s fine. Honestly it’s kinda distracting as a native English speaker to have characters who are named “Foo Fighters” or “Red Hot Chili Pepper”

or at least it’s hard to take them seriously

    • JordanM

To be fair Foo Fighters was plankton masquerading as a person and Red Hot Chili Pepper was the stand of an over enthusiastic guitarist

  • Rafael Martines

    Please ACDC to Eisidici XD

  • MasterScrub

Not sure how that’s gonna work seeing as how characters are still going to clearly be saying the names.

    • British_Otaku

Basically, we will hear Vanilla Ice broken into katakana, but legally they are cool because they never write it out in English. >_>

More or less the same as rewriting the ages of characters when the script still references it and you haven’t called in the voice actors for those few lines. It’s enough to get by, I think.

  • vidya_games

The localization changes listed are Capcom exclusive ones. Viz was more recently able to get permission to use “Vanilla Ice” in their manga translation, and D’Bo was flat out renamed “Soul Sacrifice”. (The only other changes were Oingo/Boingo becoming Zenyatta/Mondatta, and Steely Dan usurping the name “Rubber Soul” from the character who never actually gets named in the manga.)

  • D. Changstein

Well, that’s the wuss’s way out, considering that Viz was able to use more Police references in the comic.

  • Grape Monet

Vanilla Ice is the only real problem character as far as names go for the fighters, and Sex Pistols, Aerosmith and Red Hot Chili Peppers for the Stands. They could get away with everything else.

    • Ikki

Gold Experience could be troublesome as I read Prince is litigious, also Whitesnake is an active band.

  • Joseph Santee

    ….Wait… Localization… Western… ANIME… DOES THAT MEAN WHAT I THINK IT DOES?! :D ohpleasedon’tbeafactualerrorgoddammitIneedsmemyJJBATheAnimation

    • TiAn

      They confirmed few days ago season 3 anime in 2014. I hope for a s 4 and 5 anime…

  • KnifeAndFork

Can they get away with saying “Golden Experience” instead of “Gold Experience” without Prince getting into a hissy fit?

And what about the dialogue? Because we know Namco’s not gonna bother dubbing the game…

Also, I honestly think if they approached Vanilla Ice, he wouldn’t even care. Dude is making bank flipping homes right now…

    • Pinwheel

The official manga released by Viz keeps the name Vanilla Ice, so let’s hope it stays that way.

  • WyattEpp

Take that, Enya, Devo, and Danny Elfman!

Working with the publisher? I wondered how they were going to deal with the fact that Araki is a hardcore purist when it comes to his names.

  • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

i cannot wait to get my hands on this game. i love the androgynous aesthethetic that the characters have, as well as the great designs!!!

    • Ninastars

Many wouldn’t like that statement but honestly that’s why I like a lot of the designs too.

      • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

good to know that i am not the only one!!!

  • Tonton Ramos

I’m fine with dub names the important change they really need to implement was the removal of microtransactions that many japanese people criticized.

  • Göran Isacson

Oh yes. More fab for the world is always a good thing, even if this particular fab may not have familiar names. Still, I can accept that as long as I get to pose like a team ’cause shit just got real, and MUDAMUDA with the best of them.

  • akiko_sakuraba

From Jotaro to Joe. It has come.

  • Hound

“the game will retain (…) the Japanese voice acting.”

Now I’m curious how they’ll do the name changes. “Gold Experience,” “Purple Haze,” “Bites the Dust,” “Aerosmith,” “Heaven’s Door,” and “Soft & Wet” are rather unmistakable in the voice acting. Maybe the dialogue will get censored? O.o

Unless Warner Bros. Japan has the same access to music that Warner Bros US has..

  • TWE

    Oooof course.

I was under the impression since the characters/stands themselves are nothing in the likeness to any of those names, they could skirt past any potential for litigation. But then I remembered the NA music industry are the sort that get hard on the prospect of charging you for whistling a song to yourself with Siri enabled or something.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I wonder if the some songs will need to be changed… some of them outright replicate parts of certain songs. Hopefully not.

  • Abend

Next you are going to say! “this is great news”

  • Kai2591

such dedication to the fans! *thumbs up*

  • Rawindra

Oh great X_X. No English voice. OVA Part 3 already done that one. It could be imply as DLC FREE Pack like in DW7 then. Just wait & see

  • Radiosity

Isn’t it sad that they even have to do this. The IP industry really needs to cut the crap already and properly embrace parody and other forms of fan appreciation, whether professional or doujin/amateur. It’ll never happen though, certainly not as long as the old dinosaurs continue to run the show.
