Square Enix Once Promised Final Fantasy VII, VIII And IX Remakes

By Eugene . October 26, 2013 . 9:26am

Square Enix once promised a remake not only for Final Fantasy VII but for VIII and IX as well.

Yes, you read those two articles right. Way back, once upon a time, Square Enix promised a full on updated remake of Final Fantasies VII – IX, that would have been completely done up with graphical and audio enhancements that befit the PlayStation 2 system it would have graced. We imagine it being akin to the Nintendo DS versions of Final Fantasy III and IV, which were given a complete visual overhaul.

Unfortunately, these never came to be and Square Enix haven’t mentioned them again since. Still, the news isn’t all bad. We do have Final Fantasy VII on Steam, complete with the ability to mod it, which fixes many, though not all past concerns.

We’re also, eventually, sometime, it’ll-be-here-when-it’s-ready-so-sit-down-already get Final Fantasy VIII for the PC with high resolution graphics. No word on if things like music or such will be re-done too, but just being able to play it with a better-looking Squall should help things along for interest and drive Square Enix to hopefully, hopefully, keep the process going. Maybe if this sells well, we’ll get poor Zidane from number 9 finally have his turn in the returnee spotlight too. He looks and handles great in Dissidia, and plenty of folk haven’t had a chance to play his starring game so why are we still waiting!

Don’t forget too that we’re seeing Final Fantasy X on the Vita/PlayStation 3 very soon and the game looks fantastic having been given the HD treatment.

While we’re here, enjoy some classics; the theme songs for both Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX and perhaps share with us your best memories of these sadly-cancelled remakes of titles in the comments.

What a modern FF7 would look like

    • ZnTxn

      That Barret.

  • Wait what

I think the games are fine as they are. I replay them all the time. If anyone missed them, they can get them on PSN. I think, given how long it takes them to make video games now, they should continue to focus on the new stuff. People need to let the idea of remakes go. We’ve played VII already.

      Zack: Embrace your dream
of seeing Final Fantasy VII get a remake

      • Wait what

If I wanna play VII, I’ll replay VII. Better graphic and voice acting isn’t enough to make me want them to devote the years required to make it. I’d rather them make a game I haven’t played five times already.

        • Wiccan1109

To be fair, it wouldn’t be the same game if it was a remake. ^^; Sure, it’d have the same general plot but there would have to be an entirely rewritten script, new scenarios and adjustments to existing ones to compensate for changes, as well as utilizing the modern incarnations of the characters. They’re very different in their compilation renditions compared to the original game.

The gameplay would be restructured from the ground up, they’d have to add things to make it more complex for a modern day RPG, especially one so high profile. Remakes also tend to offer additional content not present in the original, I would imagine thered be tie ins with the compilation, new bosses, materia, maybe even dungeons. A HD remaster is the same game but a remake is like comparing a book and a film of the same thing. Stuff has to change to fit the new format. For better or worse, it would not be the same thing you’ve experience 5 times already. xD

I’d rather play new games too, but i can see other peoples point of view on this and i can understand why people would want it.

or bring over a game from Japan that none of us have played in english before with an official translation

I’d like to see Square Enix make a brand new Final Fantasy Tactics for the VITA or 3DS

    • Arizato

The new stuff is going backwards rather than forward though. FF was at it’s peak with VI-IX. Then X and began a more linear type of games (I still liked X though), though XII had some kind of explorable world it still wasn’t as big as the earlier games.

I want a remake of VI, VII and IX, mainly because those games felt really free which mind you was two console generations ago. Why can’t they do a large, open world with the technology they have today? Ni No Kuni did it quite well while Square-Enix told us that a remake of VII would take them 10+ years which I don’t believe for a second.

I really think that if SE made a more traditional FF game with their latest engine it would be a smash hit.

      • Wiccan1109

The main problem for VII is the graphical quality on the technology. Ni No Kuni, as gorgeous as it is, is much easier to do than Advent Children: The Game. Which is basically what you’re looking at for FFVII remake. if they do this, it won’t be super deformed, you can bet your boots, it’ll be damn close to XV visually. Translating FFVII to even just FFXIII’s visual quality whilst retaining all the npcs, items, sidequests, spells, limits, monsters, cities, world map, summons, mini games (gold saucer omg). Recording voice for that huge script. Theyd have to work out a new battle system cuz that version of the ATB ain’t gonna sell in 2014+ for a PS3/4 game. D:

Theres a reason why XIII was so simplistic, it sacrificed a lot to be so gorgeous and cinematic. XIII-2 expanded on it, but a lot of the work was already done for them with the models and stuff. To do FF7 they’d need to slow development on other titles, pull people from other departments. FF7 may not seem like a long game compared to XIII, but once they convert all its scenes in to cinematics, even just the mandatory ones, you’re looking at double what XIII gave us. :/ That said, I DO believe they could do this on the vita in just 3-5 years for any one of the FF7-9 titles, but they seemed more concerned with producing a popular new installment. Maybe the new CEO feels different?

        • So much truth in this post.

If they gave us a FFVII remake, EVERYTHING would slow down for it; (Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV to name a few?)

And more… I don’t think VII fans truly realize the magnitude and scope of the time it would take to make an HD game with the level of freedom VII gave us.

On top of that, I’m betting my life it wouldn’t even satisfy the people who asked for it.

I don’t know why people think “SE just doesn’t want money”, as if the company could just go in the back for a year and crank out a FFVI again. It isn’t that simple anymore.

      • Wait what

Okay. I mean, first, that’s your own personal tastes. I loved XIII and I’m enjoying the hell out of XIV:ARR. But you preferred the PS1-era of FF. I get that. But still, wouldn’t you rather see a NEW game in that style than a remake of what you already played before? If you don’t think they can make a new game you’ll enjoy, what makes you think you’d enjoy their remakes?

        • Arizato

I finished my last post with: “I really think that if SE made a more traditional FF game with their latest engine it would be a smash hit.”

This is coming from someone who pre-ordered the FFXIII Collector’s Edition and got majorly disappointed. I have no doubt that SE can make a game that appeals to me. But they’ve let me and many other fans down these last years. That was the point my post was trying to make.

        • $36598391

The thing is that people have been telling Square Enix what sort of games they’d like, Square Enix just doesn’t care enough to listen so all these requests are basically going in one ear and out the other

          • Wait what

No, the thing is that other people also like the stuff they’re releasing now. Lots of people like XIII and XIV:ARR. It’s at the point where the franchise has gotten so big and varied that no matter what they do, a group of people will be disappointed. I’m sure many fans who prefer X and XIII would be disappointed to see a game in the style of IV, for example. They need to just do what they want to do. Which I am grateful is not more remakes.

          • $36598391

I’m not referring to Final Fantasy but more to Square’s othe series’, Mana, Saga, Front Mission and Dragon Quest plus other countless games Square made during their Square and Squaresoft days like Bahamut’s Lagoon, Secret of Mana 2 and many more that never saw the light of day outside Japan

      • Lynx

I really have to disagree with it being the peak of VI to IX.

I’d go and say FFIV and V were the peak. VI was decent, VII was okay, a little overhyped but okay, VIII was kinda bad, IX suffered because of a transitional game.

As for more traditional? Are you implying X onwards weren’t traditional? FF has never had a ‘traditional’ definition. Every game does things differently.

        Of course, all IMO.

        • Arizato

Traditional in the sense that they are more free. Which the series basically did with 1 to 9. You had side quests that could be taken in one place, but had to be completed in another place far away. Gotta love them JRPGs with world maps.

They basically removed the sense of exploration in 10 and onwards, not counting the MMOs ofcourse.

          • Wait what

I can’t think of many instances where you had to travel across world maps all for one side quest. Even with the World Maps, old FF games were still linear until near the end. They’d open a tiny bit of the map up with only one place for you to go. So you’d go there then get something that takes you to the next part with the next place. The world maps wouldn’t open up fully until 3/4ths of the way. Which is also the exact point in X and XIII where they opened the world up for massive exploration. All the games were linear for the most part, recent games just didn’t bother trying to hide it.

  • malek86

I wouldn’t mind an updated port of FF9. The original version is just so slow. Loadings take forever.

    • Definitely this. I’d actually prefer just an HD remake of it too. I really don’t want voices or any of that jazz added…. I’d be too scared one of my favorite titles would be botched by hammy dialogue Squeenix loves

      • 3PointDecoupage

I want voice acting but just for the moogles. I couldnt imagine a zatisfying voice for quina

    • SMT

It’s my favorite game in the series and I have incredible nostalgia for it, but even with my nostalgia goggles on, I know it would be a pain to play the original due to the long loading times.
A small update, just to make everything less pixelated on today’s hardware, and improving the loading times, would be an instant buy for me!

  • kamikki

IX with highres backgrounds would be glorious. I think the character models would just need a slight update with the upres, they still hold pretty well imo.

  • Go2hell66

    ummmm ok…

    • Yeah …. I don’t really see what’s “news” here.

      • Kaitsu

        It’s not news. It’s torture.

      • Crimson_Cloud

Yeah… but now that they mentioned it, I would like to see FF VIII remake. I wonder how they would pull the Garden battle now.

  • 3PointDecoupage

The CEO of Square must be allergic to money. Thats the only thing that makes sense.

    • Strongarm Thunderbeard

There’s such a massive graphical gap between current technology and the original PlayStation that virtually ALL assets would be unusable, so they would almost be making it from the ground up in HD, meaning a big, fat, AAA budget. FFX is much lower hanging fruit than VII, VIII and IX in terms of reusing what’s already there, which is why it’s happening.

    • It isn’t that simple…

      • Ronny

The cost to make an HD version for the PS3 wouldn’t be that crazy, being that they don’t even have to change the storyline, or music. The can turn a profit really easy.

      • Grimfyre

It may not be “simple” but if they worked on remakes of these classic games they’d make more money then spending their resources making games like FF 13…

        • So you’re saying they shouldn’t make and HD games and only focus on remaking classics?
          XIII was polarizing, not bad.

People either loved it or hated it. If it was a better game it would have made more money through word of mouth but in the end there would have been sequels made which use a lot less resources.

I’m sorry, but while I loved 7,8,9, I don’t wanna see a company cranking out HD remakes all over the place. I want SE to move forward.

If people did not like XIII, Square only needs to try again with another game, experiment with that and see what they get. No two FFs are the same truly.

    • Herok♞

Well honestly no not really it would cost a heck of a lot to remake the games from scratch and then there is no guarantee they could make a return on there investment since they would be essentially paying the cost for a new game each time to get it ready for the PS4 and I am pretty sure that is why to risky especially because you always have the fans who say they want something but won’t put their money where their mouths are etc.

      • Pretty sure a return on the investment for VII was a lot more assured than X and X-2 was… Even if it costs more to make…

        • Grimfyre

lol not to mention FF 13….

  • Dark Zerato

FFX/X-2 are just HD remaster, not a remake. SE thinks remaking the whole game would be a pain in the ass. And they choose to bring III-VI everywhere instead.

    • I’ve noticed people throw around the term “remaster” like it’s in the video game dictionary. Games don’t get mastered, so they can’t get remastered. There’s no “mastering programmer” who goes over the source code for a final once-over.

      • Dark Zerato

Then you can say it’s a HD enhancement.

        • No, I am being pedantic! Witness my dickery! Get offended! This is the internet, by god!

          • NimbusStev

You’re not as gentle as your name led me to believe. :<

Good News Everyone, Square Enix is finally remaking these three!

        • Guest

+1 for the Legend of Zelda quote

  • Thrasher429

I don’t know if I would really want them to remake any of them. On one hand it would be really awesome to see what it would be like in HD. But on the other hand there’s always the possibility that it won’t feel like the same games that I sunk hours upon hours into as a kid.

    • Aoshi00

After playing Crisis Core (cried seeing Zach die) and watching the FF7 Intro PS3 demo at the time.. I was so stoked for an eventual HD remake of FF7.. If Mistwalker and FeelPlus could pull off Lost Odyssey several years ago in 2007, even Blue Dragon by Artoon earlier, which felt a lot like FF 7-10 w/ an expansive world, I don’t see how S-E “can’t” do it.. the only reason would be if it’s ever done, they’re just not satisfied by giving it a cosmetic upgrade.. and they would like to tamper w/ the gameplay, instead of just leaving it as old turn-based.. I’m disappointed they won’t do it or think that it can’t be done, or it could only be done in 10 yrs.. I mean, just look at RE1 remake on the gamecube, same gameplay and atmosphere, just updated graphics.

      • $36598391

Plus Capcom included in the Gamecube remake what they weren’t able to fit in the PS1 version like the graveyard just outside the lobby in the mansion and the wooded area behind the mansion

        • Guest

Also don’t forget other additions that the remake had like the Crimson head zombies, they scared me half to death when they got back up, were faster and had claws
The first time I played it 10 years ago I was wondering why zombies I had previously killed weren’t going away when I left the room like they did in all the other REs

  • echokanon

I’m pretty FF7 has been planned to make another episode secretly all the while. They just couldn’t announce it before FF13 and maybe KH3 to be declared safe to release.

I just hope that next game’s acronym would be EC or FC following the trend. I just hope it will not be GC which leave enough space to become a 7 episode saga…

  • Tom_Phoenix

Technically speaking, they can still remake these in (better than) PS2 quality. It’s just that now they would have to do it on the 3DS rather than the PS2….which I would be entirely in favour of (even if I would die laughing at the sheer irony of a FF7 remake appearing on a Nintendo platform).

That said, Square Enix staff seem to be as much divided on the issue of a FF7 remake as the fanbase itself and nobody seems willing to take responsibility for such an undertaking.

Anyway, the reason why plans for the PS2 remakes fell through was because of the massive financial bomb that was Spirits Within. Incidentally, it was that same fiasco that caused the handheld ports/remakes of the pre-VII games to be delayed significantly (or in the case of the Wonderswan Colour remake of III, cancelled entirely).

  • JustThisOne

Hopefully I’m not offending anyone here, but I’m not exactly sure why this was brought up. There’s also articles that explained the difficulty of remaking FFVII and how they also want to move on to create better games as opposed to recreating old ones.

But then again, this article was probably more about talking about these three Final Fantasies within the community. :> In which case, I’m all for it.

I think we should give up on the idea of a remake. Maybe a slightly remastered port or something, but even that seems unlikely. If I wanted to replay the games, I think I’d just replay the games. If these games were to get full blown remakes, I think there’d be a lot of dissonance within the design.

    • Guest

As long as they get remakes I could care less how much is changed

      • Fidelis

Hoh hoh hoh, that’s a bold thing to say

      • JustThisOne

Even if it ends up changing the characters, some scenes, or the overall feel of the game?

Consider all the different versions of Cloud. He’s become such a stoic now. I’m not sure how I’d feel about him playing the leading man of FFVII.

Or think about how the ATB system would feel, when everything else is polished and modernized.

I dunno, it just seems like a very strong statement to make.

        • Miss_Madness

Square has been a bit stupid for making could stoic during dissidia. It doesn’t make much sense unless, they’ve been taking cloud from points after the plot twist and I can’t even remember how they had him acting in crisis core. Actually the entire plot twist gives Cloud reason for having three different personalities.
(Let’s ignore KH cloud for now.)

        • Nice Boat Quatro

Yeah Square has really been ruining its characters. Check Terra in Dissidia. She is basically Shinji Ikari with “I don’t wanna fight”, “I can’t run away”, “Why must I fight?”

          • JustThisOne

I don’t think they’re really trying to ruin their characters. But when they expand on them, they don’t always match whatever the player has in mind.

I think the best way to describe it is that every other version other than the original feels like an adaptation.

          • Nice Boat Quatro

Well, it looks to me that Square kind of understands it. In both Crisis Core and the film’s director cut Square tried to give the character more emotions.

      • Let’s not forget what Advent Children did to Cloud.

    • Hound

So the difficulty in remaking FFVII is that there’s too many NPC sprites and textures? I don’t see the issue. Only the obsessed would recognize 90% of the NPCs (most of which are unnecessary,) and many of the monsters are re-used in later final fantasies (especially 10, which they just HDed.)

If a lot of NPCs had a different look from the original or used a more limited set of textures, there’d be no issue. The obsessed would buy any version of a game they’re obsessed with unless it’s broken or mechanics are removed (or obnoxious ones are added.)

(comparably, FFIV’s 3D version lost a lot of its textures and changed the art style and battle animations completely.)

      • JustThisOne

This is my own personal opinion, but I see tons of potential problems with remakes like these. I could go into a huge long winded shpeal, but I’ll try to keep it short:

        – Characters may end up different, because of voice acting, possible script changes, and animations.
        – Cutscenes may have to be redirected.
        – Possible difficulties with pre-rendered backgrounds changing to 3D environments. If there’s no change, then problems with updating backgrounds to look good with current models.
        – Everything would need new character models.
        – Battle system could be left untouched, but attempting to modernize ATB will be hard.
        – Satisfying the high standards of fans. Everyone sees the ideal remake differently.
        – How to adapt the overworld map? How to keep the environments consistent.

It’s the usual problems with reboots, adaptations and remakes really. It’s like you’re making a new game, but instead of being able to run wild with creativity – you’re forced to play with pre-existing ideas in a box.

It’s just hard. The DS remakes of the earlier final fantasies where they’re all chibified were a great result, but they’re also not the most popular entires of the franchise.

        • Lucky Dan

You didn’t acknowledge the FF advent movie which already remade the game into HD format.

Your talking out of your ass.

          FF: Advent Children

          Characters models already made
          Cutscenes have a direction
No difficulties the environments already made
They already have character models OF ALL THE CHARACTERS the only thing they have to remake is the enemy characters
          ATB will be untouched
The standard is already in the movie
Umm no need, they can keep the map as is, as an overhead map is just that an overhead cartology map used for navigation

          • JustThisOne

Alright, let’s assume that you can reuse the character models from the movie.

Do you know how difficult it is take a movie and make it into a game? Even if they could reuse the assets, it would take a lot of effort to make them interactive. And they didn’t recreate every location.

As for the overhead map… Imagine that staying it’s current graphical form, and then you enter a town and it’s Advent Children quality. That’s jarring.

Anyway, I don’t want to go into every single problem that I can think of, but you hopefully understand what i mean. I’m saying it’s hard, it’s got problems, and that’s why I can understand that they’d rather work on new game.

          • Nana

Oh my god you actually believe this.

And then you use “talking out of your ass”.

Oh the irony. Spoiler: THey would have to redo nearly all the models. You can’t just take a movie and say LOL LOOK I GOT GAME MODELZ NOW. It just doesn’t work that way. How can you even use a computer when you’re this clueless?

    • Lucky Dan

It’s all bullshit, they go and make Final Fantasy Advent Children the movie with full on character renders of EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER AND EVERY SINGLE SCENE in the game.

If you buy any of this shit from S-E you might as well be the naive person on the planet, they already remade it into a movie they just holding it off cause they don’t know how much it will sell. Cause the FFVII Advent children i bet didn’t sell many as predicted that’s the reason they wont remake it. After that no movies came out for Final Fantasy.

  • Altumn

I honestly don’t want anymore remakes! I just want new Final Fantasies that are just as good as the earlier ones.

    • $36598391

Final Fantasy is a great series but I’d love to see the Front Mission, Saga, Dragon Quest and Mana series’ get some attention outside Japan
NA didn’t get the Dragon Quest Anniversary Collection Wii that Japan got, hell Square Enix won’t even put the NES versions of the first three Dragon Quest games on the Wii Shop Channel or the WiiU/3DS eshops
There is no sign of NA getting the Dragon Quest VII 3DS remake
The PS1 version of the game was released in English and already has an ESRB rating so why can’t S-E put it on PSN as a PS1 Classic
Saga 2 and 3 NDS remakes weren’t released outside Japan
Front Mission 5 wasn’t released outside Japan

It’s like Square Enix is trying to kill off all their game series outside Japan that aren’t Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts

      Front Mission Evolved was awful

NA never got the remake of the original Saga game due to the Wonderswan never making it over here

Ummmm…Article with no point right here.Or rather “ignores” it’s own point. Your excuses for steam/etc HD remakes that did happen doesn’t excuse it.Or even support the post. Not blaming Square Enix. They decide to do it or not really.

This post has no “*Blank* Square Enix representative has confirmed cancellation of these remakes”,or “*Blank* Square Enix Representative has said they are still looking into remaking/still in the process of remaking these titles”. It doesn’t exactly need that if you got a source(or leak). But it needs to have something to update us on the games that are/were IN production.

There really isn’t any story or answer to what SE has said about these “promised remakes”.Unless you want to count the reiteration of the post title within the opening of this article.

Instead. This post says:”Did you not know that FFVII is available on Steam with modding?”.Did you not know that there is an HD remake of FFX”.It’s just basic etc of here’s what did happen with these games as of recent.I don’t know why this is even a post.

    • GH56734

Why not. Obscure game trivia won’t harm anyone.
I heard this way from Siliconera about that Harvest Moon-like game by Nintendo, or how to play that browser Bravely Default game for anyone outside Japan.
I, for one, am pleased a lot these forgotten games are still being remembered today.
Plus title says it all: “SE Once Promised FF remakes”. So nothing new to expect, just historical retrospective stuff.

      • revenent hell

They have a following ….. I wouldn’t technically call them forgotten…. More like “Classics”
Like movies certain games will be remembered for a long, long time.

        • GH56734

My bad, I was talking about those unreleased / unavailable versions.

          • revenent hell

            No worries!

      • LuciferD666

You’re not getting the point in my context.
The title of this post doesn’t really give incentive of not giving any new news. It’s also not really a retrospective. They are only . restating what happened recently with these games.

The title is just misleading. If you think it was a retrospective do you think it’d matter whether they have remake news or not. Fronting old gems isn’t a problem. But you can see other comments who have said the same as me in similar. This post could have been made disregarding the subject of their remakes is all I’m saying.”SE once promised FF remakes” leads some to believe they will touch on what is happening with the supposed remakes. Most likely someone looking for that kind of news alright know of the included titles that have seen themselves on recent(and digital) shelves.

To have no news on the remakes is misleading imo. But it’s my opinion. And again I’ve seen now that it’s not just me.

        • M’iau M’iaut

Not every article has to be new and never before known hot breaking news. Especially on the weekend, you will find pieces done to encourage simple discussion. It is something we have always done and will continue to do.

          • LuciferD666

That said. I’m considering that as well. Weekend or not doesn’t really matter. News is news. Heck VG247 proves that(if I’m to stray away from the big gaming outlets like IGN). When you read(and if you read) “imo”.It should have occurred to you that it is within my preferred context.

Secondly do what you want. I don’t see the matter in replying to me if there are others who may not have been as descriptive as me. But have said similar(ex. “is this even news” etc). Hell…I hope you didn’t think there wasn’t going to be a comment like this or something. You know you can ignore it?
Your sentence prior to this reply says you’ll continue doing things like this(although I don’t see where I had any power to even influence change of any sort compared to you runners.Especially with just one comment). So you’ve already got your agenda straight no matter what anyone says.My comment was really only on the misleading title. You can take it or leave it. Discussion encourages opinion. As long as you don’t limit it. I believe I’m allowed to say what I want following the rules right?

Now if you excuse me I’ll be trying to get SB4 on preorder.

          • JustThisOne

I think you guys should have a subtitle or something for future articles, like “Let’s Discussing” or something like that. Something to make it obvious that it’s not a news article, but a conversation thing. :>

  • revenent hell

Actually I wouldn’t mind the game updated, as in graphics, as long as they left the game as is and didn’t change gameplay stuff and such.
I think for people like me that’s the biggest worry is that they would ruin the games if they changed events and things of that nature.
Because frankly people cant help but think “I could make this better by doing this…..”

  • P4ine

Here I was, mixing up the tense and reading something like “Square Enix promisES remakes for FFVII/VIII/IX”, wetting my pants of excitement, and then the letdown… now fuck this shit

  • Zeonsilt

I have found it! This is video from 1999,there’s a technical demo for PS2 FF8,start at 0:25.

    • Lifestreamer

      I love you so much…

  • I am looking for the news in this article but I can’t find it.

  • Anime10121

I’d gladly take PS2 styled graphical remakes on PS3/4 for full price! The PS2 FF’s were GORGEOUS to look at, and even today, look better than many current gen games (just without the HD). They dont have to look like FFXIII SE, gimme PS2 calibur graphics and I’ll GLADLY pay $60 for remakes!

    • James Darkly

I’m agree with you, I don’t get it why people fear of remakes. if it fails it’s not like you are risking something or game will be tainted by some kind of deadly curse, if you won’t like remake, don’t buy it, play your old one for eternity.

Just look at the situation now, those FF titles are clasics, and new players would never play those games, and how new gamers will remember final fantasy series? by FFXIII? “cough” and how they will remember FFVII? by AC? “cough”

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

If they add micro-transactions to VIII they would become millionaires since drawing magic from enemies is extremely annoying.

    • revenent hell

I thought that was pretty fun myself…… Mystery draws and not knowing if the thing would kill you before you could syphon from it….well early on anyways, was plain fun to me.
Honestly I barely ever used magic stuff besides Pain or a flare or ultima here and there so once stuff was capped for junctioning I kind of didn’t have to do it much if at all.
Mostly for hard stuff I was cheap and abused Selphy’s “The End” though hence my non needing of magic stuffs much

    • juniglee

Why draw magic when you can just Card Mod instead? So much more effortless, plus you get stronger magic early on in the game too. Unless for whatever reason, you hate Triple Triad (which is probably the best card game minigame in any FF ever).

      • Juan Andrés Valencia

The first time I played it I didn’t know about Triple Triad. Until I logged in FFXI and you could play it online. When I found out about it’s origins I realized I lost a lot of time grinding senselessly for magic.

I thought that a PS2 remake would be a good idea for those three they would need to update de grapics and not change the mechanics so much. Now? i don’t think I want to see what SE would do while remaking VII, VIII and IX.

Also this is the Final fantasy VIII Tech Demo on the PS2. this tech demo was released in 1999-2000

  • Yause

These were never going to be full-blown remakes. At Square’s January 2001 shareholders conference, Sakaguchi raised the idea of porting FF4-6 to GBA and FF7-9 to PS2. The latter was to feature improved video compression and DD 5.1 audio for movie scenes. Nintendo’s Hiroshi Yamauchi balked at the notion of a Square/Nintendo deal, while Square’s Hisashi Suzuki probably saw little need for FF7-9 on a system that was backwards compatible with the PSOne.

You see, the FF movie disaster was about to hit, and Sakaguchi was getting desperate (indeed, he was kicked off the board two weeks later), hence his desire to rerelease all things Final Fantasy within the year.

  • W… was there a reason for bringing this up, other than making us sad…? ;__;

    • revenent hell

I attribute it to just making a post for S**** and giggles.

  • AuraGuyChris

    Oh, they ARE remaking them…
    (No, they really aren’t…are they?)

    • AoNoise

FFIX on my phone? I’ll take it. I’ll take it anyday.

    • revenent hell

Probably in the near future now that you gave them the idea..
      Bad AuraGuyChris! Bad!

    • CirnoLakes

Well, I figure they’re porting them for phones. Since they’re already porting Dragon Quest VIII, I assume they think the average phone is powerful enough for their 32-bit games now.

I don’t know about remaking, but I’m definitely expecting to hear them announce ports soon.

    • Skeptika Crediblus

See, you said it, and now they’re gonna do it, and with microtransactions.

      Cuz they’re jerks.

  • PuddlesPuddles

IX will probably never be remade – it’s huge, and would cost a lot to rebuild from scratch in HD. But it actually doesn’t need a remake at all. I played it recently, and it has aged really well. The visuals are amazing. The only thing that dates it is the low resolution, but it still looks amazing over all, even by today’s standards.

    • GH56734

BTW I saw somewhere they still have the original assets for that one, the source even uploaded (amazing) art in its native resolution.
It’s a crime that game wasn’t rereleased with restored graphics yet.

  • Nice Boat Quatro

It’s obvious that Square will not make high budget remakes considering how the 3DS remake of IV did. It sold less than a half of what the spinoff FF7 Crisis Core did.

    • Dagobert

Crisis Core was a prequel and not a spinoff. Also FF IV doesn’t have the popularity that FF VII or FF VIII has nor was it a big budget remake for the 3DS..

      • Nice Boat Quatro

Sequel? FFVIII is popular? Most comments in Siliconera treat it like the black sheep of the franchise.

        • Dagobert

My bad I meant prequel, not sequel. And yes FF VIII was popular in terms of sales and everything, I know people like to bitch and moan about it (I liked the game) but you can’t deny that it sold a lot.

  • CirnoLakes

It is strange how long the updated port of Final Fantasy VIII is taking. Though the logic that it’s finished when it’s finished does make sense. I’d rather them take their time and get it right.

The last time I played Final Fantasy VII on Steam it had some issues I felt still needed to be patched.

Now, a Final Fantasy IX remake, that would really make me happy.

    • Indeed! FFIX on the PC would be Awesome! I believe that game deserves it the most!

  • Dagobert

I want a real remake of FFVIII and not just an HD port.

  • The Watcher

They probably might work on the remakes after FFX/X-2 and Lightning Returns are out.

    • Kelohmello

It’s too late now. Too expensive and far too much time would be spent to remake large games like those.

  • Ric Vazquez

Then get to it Square Enix, chop chop!

  • cyberkinghardy

Make the remake of FFVII look like Advent Children movie..

  • What they should remake is Final Fantasy VI. Jesus. I’m actually a bit sad about this news. Is there really no demand for an FF VI remake? :(

  • KingNigma

    It’s not even April though.

  • new_tradition

In my opinion, a FFVII remake simply can’t be a graphic update anymore. It has to include a whack of story additions to take into account the series it’s now become (heck, never mind the remake, just give me a final instalment to close the plot hole from DoC Dx).

FFVIII had static CGI background, right..? I’d imagine they need to make things more interactive and what not. Update the models, especially Squall’s. Make him look more like his CGI model. His blue eyes looked so brown to me when I originally played it on my PS1, lol

FFIX is probably the best looking PS1 game I played, so if there’s a way to just add a HD gloss to everything, I think I’d be good with that.

You know, now I’m curious, how likely is it that hypothetical remakes of these will be console releases? Personally a Vita remake would be awesome to me, yet it seems people will only accept “Advent Children: The Game” kind of quality.

As awesome as it it see to remakes on the level of FFXV, isn’t that too much effort for a remake? I mean, it seems a little unreasonable to pour in resources for a mere remake, you know? I rather they just make new FF games and what not instead. Anyone else feel the same way, or am I being weird (and kind of sleep deprived, lalala~) xD

  • Kilim

SE has blatantly said that they refuse to remake FFVII until they create a better game

however, given their current track record..

    • $36598391

They have created better games since FFVII came out all those years ago, those games just aren’t part of the Final Fantasy series

and because of that fact Square Enix thinks they won’t sell over here
Assuming that the Saga 2 and 3 remakes wouldn’t sell just because Unlimited Saga was a failure over here is just pathetic, that’s probaly why NA hasn’t gotten Saga Frontier and Saga Froniter 2 on PSN in NA

  • Jeffrey Kuhl

All Final Fantasies suck except for FFX. So glad they enhanced it.

  • Chido55

The harder you asks for it, the harder it comes.
While VII is a good game overall, and fans are jizzing for a remake, the thoughts of the remake can actually ruins the game instead of pleasing these hordes is scary to Square.

As a VIII starter, I am happy enough it gets a PC release, regardless of graphics or whatnot. What counts is my love for it.

  • Rogerrmark

The issue about FFVII remake(VIII and IX too),is that people aparently want a game with graphics Advent Children CGI-like(or that early PS3 tech demo).

Remakes/ports tend to never sell better than the original(take a look at Pokemon Leaf Green/Fire Red,Zelda Ocarina of time 3DS)so making a high budget HD game from scratch seems unreal…

I would totally play VII,VIII and IX remakes with Crisis Core-like graphics though, and maybe revised translation and system(like they did III and IV).

  • icecoffemix

IX remake? My most favorite FF ever?

Please don’t bullshit this out SE, please…

    • Altin

  • Daniel

I want remakes as much as the next guy but S.E. has something else they could give me that I would like almost just as much if not more: A updated remake of ActRaiser.

Honestly, imagine how it would be today. A perfect blend of a fantasy based SimCity type game and an action based adventure game. It would be a blast You’d also be playing two roles in game, allowing it reach a broader audience if handled properly.

  • Ban The Jackass

Siliconera Y U DO DIS. Squeenix will never port it or remake it! ): They are so obsessed with money nowadays.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

What about Final Fantasy 6? That’s the best one!

    • Misurino

I agree, FF VI could be the best one, especially if we talk about the story and the amazing characters (I’m sorry, VII can’t stand a chance in my opinion…). Maybe only FF IX is the only one that can compete with VI. But I don’t think this 2 games need remakes, even if It will be amazing to see VI with a different graphic!
By the way, of course this is only my personal opinion … ;)

Ah, and just saying, why only FF? I don’t really like remakes but…..Am I really the only one that cares about games like Chrono, Vagrant Story, Seiken Densetsu or Xenogears?
It will be nice to see games like this again…. even if I don’t really trust the actual square-enix.

  • prinnywin

And I still don’t think they need remakes.

All 3 being some of my favorite games of all time, mind you.

  • Square Enix also not only promised but advertised the localization of Dragon Quest IV for the PS1. Guess what we didn’t get?

    • Ace Trainer Chris

Correction: Enix promised that. Didn’t happen because their American branch shut down. This was before they became Square-Enix.

  • ElAbuelo69

I am actually scared the FF7 remake ends up with the Crisis Core anime-teen style…

  • Kudan

I’d prefer another FF on the vein of those instead of more remakes.

  • Robbyfishersora

I say it do it square!

  • k.b.a.

  • Tom

Shivers with joy! I want Final Fantasy VIII remake or VIII-2 so much! My entry to the series and all time favorite episode! WANT! Day1 purchase, pre-order, limited/collectors edition!!!

  • Fox

SE was planning on remaking ALL of the Final Fantasy games, and… they’re still on track to do so, with the recent remake of Final Fantasy V and upcoming remake of Final Fantasy VI.

It’s just that they’ve shifted development to smartphones for those remakes, which is exactly what All Of the Gamers absolutely did not want.

  • Vash bane

that would be pretty cool those three were my first ff experience and what got me into the series

  • Zangetsu777

How many times must I read this same article…..

  • Raiden

I really hope Square Enix eventually comes around.

  • James Houston

If FF7 comes out on the 3DS, then I’m totally gonna buy it.

Don’t get me wrong, I never ever played FF7 and the PSX version looks too outdated for me. So a remake works best for me. As long as they do it RIGHT.
