Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Set For Spring 2014; Is Separate From MGSV

By Ishaan . November 4, 2013 . 6:19am

It’s official—Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will indeed be a separate game from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, as Siliconera reported earlier in the year. Konami confirmed the news this morning, along with an announcement that Ground Zeroes will be available for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will have the player go on a rescue mission, infiltrating a Cuban prison camp. The events of the game will culminate in the plotline of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

As previously reported, Ground Zeroes will feature a large open environment, a day-and-night system that affects the game’s missions, and is intended to familiarize players with the series’ new advancements in preparation for Metal Gear Solid V. The game will feature both a central story and Side-Ops missions, including tactical missions, aerial assaults and “covert” missions.

Additionally, Konami say, the game will feature a minimalistic user interface.

“The advanced capabilities of the FOX Engine have allowed me to tell the new story in a new way. There will be a significant difference in what Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain brings to the series, so we want to ease players into the new open world environment and its potential. As such, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes has been designed to introduce key elements, allowing them to fully benefit from all that the new game will offer.”

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will be available in Spring 2014. The game will be available as both a retail and digital title for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Retail versions of the game will cost $30/£30, while download versions will cost $20/£20.

Meanwhile, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will see a digital-only release of the game, priced at $30/£30 on both platforms.

    so its a giant prologue?
    Fine with that!

  • Nate

I have gotten mgs 1-4 and the two psp games and I am not planning on
getting this one. It’s not right to fire one voice actor that has been there for so long but keep the other one. And I’m refereing to how they fired David Hayter but are keeping the JP voice actor that has been voicing snake since hayter has.

    • BossBullet

Not buying it because of a voice actor is just weird but each to their own.

      • Go2hell66

well to be fair he was a pretty damn good VA.

        • BossBullet

True but if you’re interested in the game but not buying the game because of a ICONIC VA not in it that’s just wrong.

          • Nate

It’s not as much that he is not in it. It’s more of how they are keeping the JP voice actor. If they got rid of both to go in a new direction, I’d be more ok with that. But the fact they fired one but kept the other is not fair.

          • BossBullet

I think the reason why is that since Kiefer Sutherland is the motion capture and voice of snake. There wasn’t a need to fire the other actor since he wasn’t motion capture snake in the first place. That’s my two cents anyways.

      • InfectedAI

To lots of people Hayter is Snake and anyone else voicing him is just wrong. Like a movie or tv series having a different actor play the main character after the series has been going on for several years. Personally I’ll be skipping out too. For me mostly because I feel like they’re starting to milk the series to death. Changing the VA definitely makes me want it less though.

        • BossBullet

Understandable, I feel like Konami is milking it a bit too much but lets wait and see if the new VA and his acting achieve the Big Boss personality.

      • Aoshi00

It is a pity they kept Oozuka Akio and not Hayter though, since both VAs have voiced the character from the very beginning, they’re just ingrained in our minds.. It’s like in Man of Steel 2, Ben Affleck would be Batman instead of Christian Bale just we had gotten used to him in the Dark Knight trilogy ( and I even liked Daredevil), and of course Kevin Conroy was the best VA for Batman. Or Saint Seiya, it just doesn’t feel like Seiya w/o Furuya Tohru, now it’s by a fake 2nd gen VA.. Kiefer Sutherland would probably be good too, but if the reason is he’s doing the mocap, Hayter could do the mocap as well right?

I was thinking of getting this on next gen, just like Assassin’s Creed 4.. but if it’s digital only, I might just get it on the 360..

        • BossBullet

I think Hayter could do the Mocap but I think it lies on how punished snake is different from the rest of the snakes

          • Aoshi00

But the fact that Oozuka Akio is still doing the Jpn voice means they want a consistent Snake. It’s not like Hayter cannot bring a different performance if so needed, since the Jpn Snake is still the same VA. Like Nate said above, Jpn fans are accustomed to Oozuka Akio, and US fans Hayter after so many years. So it’s a bit weird one goes and not the other if they want to go a “different” direction.

    • Impressionnant

      “Not muh Hayter”.

    • SupaPhly

      Hayters gonna Hate

    • RazeXI

Isn’t it because it hurts David Hayter to do the voice now? or so I thought

      • BossBullet

No, It’s because they wanted a older sounding snake if i recall.

        • InfectedAI

Really? Hayter doesn’t sound old? And the honestly think Sutherland sounds older?

          • BossBullet

Nevermind, Kojima wanted a actor with facial expression rather than the tone of voice.
It’s in one of the articles on here.

    • British_Otaku

I respect your choice, but you should wait a sec to see how the game (perhaps both parts of MGSV) turns out. Given that this series did a bait and switch for protagonists before, is batshit crazy, that it isn’t Solid Snake (Naked and Solid have different voices in Japanese VO) and this game was introduced with Kojima’s trademark misleading with a false company and director.

Chances are that we could see Hayter, but it is intended to be a surprise, joke or something.

    • Utku Savaş

Way to go boy! Teach them their lessons!

      • Nate

        Voting with our Wallet :)

    • Richard N

Quick question; what did you think of Richard Doyle voicing Big Boss in MGS4? Were you angry it wasn’t David Hayter voicing both of them?

Just wondering, cuz this isn’t the first time they gave Big Boss a different actor, but I don’t recall any hate going on when it happened the first time.

      • Nate

        did not mind and no

        • Richard N

So what’s the problem this time?

          • Nate

          • Richard N

That’s probably the best argument against Sutherland I’ve seen yet.

  • Go2hell66

    Called it

also is it me or is this game really cheap?

    • KingGunblader

It’s cheaper because it’s basically an extended demo for MGSV, so they aren’t charging full price for it.

      • Shippoyasha

I just hope it’s not $40. Even $30 is pushing it if the game really is a short prologue. I wonder if it has achievements/trophies as well.

      • Utku Savaş

Jeez, why everyone keep saying “it’s just a demo” “technically, it’s a demo” “it’s a polished demo” “it’s an extended demo” for f’s sake? If GZ was demo, we would play the same mission in TPP, but nope, we’ll not. So it’s not a demo, it’s a prologue or prequel of MGSV you might say.

  • Devinja

Wow, I was afraid it wouldn’t be on PS3/360.

    • Anime10121

Why? Its been cross gen from the start :/

      • Devinja

They havent mentioned it in platforn other then next gen for a while, and versus XIII jumped off this gen. It should come to PC after all the talk of the demos running off PC and Konamis slight intrest in steam now.

        • Kai2591

I sure hope it will come to PCs :)

  • Xaltmas

Day one on 360. I need my physical copy.

    • Anime10121

And now I feel HORRIBLE about cancelling my PS4 preorder :(
Never imagined GZ would be coming this soon!

And damn it all about them not releasing GZ on next gen at retail! Oh well, guess I’ll be getting both the PS3 and PS4 versions! I needs my physical copy and at least this way, I can wait a little later on the PS4! Besides, both versions still equal less than that of a full game anyway so PS34 for the win :D

      • Xaltmas

        Since it’s really just a demo, I really don’t mind missing a next-gen version.

I might still try to grab an Xbone this year, so if I’m successful, I’ll get it for that. While I don’t need GZ on next-gen, I refuse to play the Phantom Pain on current-gen consoles.

        • Anime10121

Even if it is “technically” a demo, it’ll have its own story, interface, and characters (as Paz and Chico will likely look entirely different in the Phantom Pain). It’ll be a premature dive into how TPP will play, so I still wanna experience it on next gen.

I just wonder how long its actually gonna be. Considering most Metal Gears hover around the 10-15 hour mark (well barring 4 which was far shorter and Peace Walker which was far longer), I’m thinking this game’ll probably max at 5 hours or so, but either way, I cant wait for this!

          • Xaltmas

4-5 hours would be amazing. I hope the demo gives some general idea of when TPP will come out.

Like, you beat GZ, and it says something like “Continue the story on blah blah blah”.

          • Anime10121

Yep, I cant imagine it being any less considering it’s open world, has main story missions and side missions, and is Metal Gear (so even if Kojima says he’s cutting down on the movie like cutscenes, there will still be long scenes I’m sure) :P

But yeah, I also hope it hints at when TPP willl release (I’m still expecting it to hit in 2015) and I also kinda hope it ends on a cliffhanger that leaves us hanging til TPP drops. I have a love/hate relationship with cliffhangers like that, I like them as long as a resolution isnt YEARS off (or as in Megaman Legends case never happening).

  • All Fiction

    There’s a typo, it’s €30, not $30.
By the way, although i’m not from UK, it’s disgusting to do the 1€ = 1£, it’s already shitty enough to see 1€=1$, but it’s a whole new level here, especially if they dare selling this for $30 in the US (£30 = $48, and no tax can justify this)

    • sakiu

Screwing Europe just got into a whole different level! Thinking about cancelling my PS4 preorder due to ridicules high RRP in Europe, 69€ is a scam… Especially when games are practically coded for PC with new architecture, so the prices should be lower than that! at least on pair with US prices…

No one digit tax will make it fair when I have to suffer 23% VAT here on all games, even digital -_-

  • AndyLC

Y’know in some interviews Kojima was talking about games being episodic like a TV show… I guess he was talking about this, Ground Zeroes being a low priced 1st episode for the MGSV ‘season’.

It’s an interesting way of doing things.

  • RazeXI

This game’s length should be interesting overall, but none-the-less I’m excited, I’ll get my PS4 around spring time then

  • Ric Vazquez

That’s a good price for a MGS game, I’m getting this on day one ftw

  • Nitraion

    Huh so cheap….
    i kinda worried… ._.

this game will be so short?

    • EX+

It’s one mission. Basically a glorified demo.

      • Arizato

“The game will feature both a central story and Side-Ops missions, including tactical missions, aerial assaults and “covert” missions”

  • alexis cortes

YES, FINALLY. I just hope it’s early spring and not almost ending spring.

  • Arizato

I am actually happy they decided to make them two separate games for some reason. I guess I am just really eager for some more MGS!

    • Utku Savaş

Same here. But if you think of it, it’ll make no difference if they would release GZ and TPP in one game. We’ll play both games same amount of time.

  • Logan Moll

Why the crap are the next gen versions digital only?!

    • Utku Savaş

I have an obsession of having all of my games in retail copy and I find it slightly depressing. It’s ineviteble I guess that in the future of gaming, there will be only digital copies.

      • Dagobert

Same here, I need to have a physical copy for collection purposes, but this decision of theirs is just stupid since I’m sure Phantom Pain will be released as a physical copy and not digital only.

  • ecoutercavalier

Digital only for PS4? Well that makes my decision easier. Ground Zeroes on PS3. Phantom Pain on PS4.

  • Dagobert

So now they’re selling chapters of the game and for some odd reason the next gen versions are digital only. Not sure if Kojima has any power to make this decision but if he did… Wtf man?

Just imagine MGS3 being sold this way, you pay for the short portion of the game, right until the point you meet Sokolov and after that you pay for the rest of the game. If part of the game is 30$ then the remaining better be another 30$ at most and not 60$. Or else MGSV is pretty much 90$. Wtf is going on with Konami and Kojima? Is my favorite game series being ruined?

  • Göran Isacson

Sooo it’s the prologue chapter to the game, sold separately for… reasons. On the one hand I guess it’s one way to build hype, get an early part out of the way and then release the real meat after the prologue gets everyone salivating, but I’m not sure I really like this kinda thinking…

  • eilegz

    very expensive demo….
