Super Smash Bros. Inspired Indie Fighter Gets A Playable Demo

By Eugene . November 12, 2013 . 3:11pm

You might have forgotten about the indie developed game Air Dash Online by developers JV5. However, they haven’t given up and are still soldiering on with their “fluid and agile character movement” brawler inspired by Super Smash Bros.

To that end they’ve put up a playable demo on their website using the Unity engine. It already looks slick. Although you’re only able to control one of two characters—Chai and Tesla—in a simple virtual training room (minus a training dummy), the ability to glide around and pull off some moves are already there and looking great.

This is a game that’s heavily inspired by the Super Smash Bros. Melee specifically, with Chai being based off Marth and Tesla off Captain Falcon. Other characters include Lumella, Togun and Vaius.

The demo allows you to try out basic functions such as air dashing (naturally), different levels of jumping and even dash cancel already, which should give pro fight players something to slaver over.

You can try the demo build out here.

Oh hey Vaas is in this game.

  • Jahred Down

    I saw
    “Super Smash Bros
    gets a playable demo”

    I almost screamed.

    • Kaetsu

      If only *sigh*

  • 栗場 江理久

I actually was thinking of this the other day, but was too lazy to go searching around for it xD Nice to see them still going :D

  • Arcana Wiz

Well look foward it, and the designs are cool, and love the steampunk elements on it.

  • Tonton Ramos

I wonder why when Sony does a brawler like game you bashed it but when an indie did it you liked it? I wonder…

    • InfectedAI

Did they? Well Sony’s ended up being very flawed unfortunately. A real shame. Hopefully it gets a sequel at some point that fixes all the flaws.

      • Tonton Ramos

Yeah and Crash and Spyr-Oh wait? Activision dammit!

    • hazelnut1112

People were actually looking forward to the game when it was announced because of the characters shown like Parappa and Sweet Tooth.
Then the game was bashed left and right because of the roster choices. I played the game and it was fun, but the potential to this game was wasted big time on the terrible roster.

      • JoJo_649

Without a doubt, the fact that stuff like Fat Princess, two Coles(one was enough), propaganda Dante, Raiden and a freaking Big Daddy made it to the roster, rather than someone like Rudy from Wild Arms, Wander from Shadow of The Colossus, Old Snake, Cloud and Freaking Crash Bandicoot was terrible, on top of that it looked so similar to smash that it wasn´t funny, couldn’t they make it a 3D fighter like Anarchy Reigns or Power Stone? I mean Playstation was one of the pioneers of 3D gaming, and doing a 2D fighter to celebrate the legacy of the brand didn’t made sense.

        • hazelnut1112

The biggest F U to the people was when they cancelled Abe from Oddworld and Dart from Dragoon as DLC and instead they gave us Isaac form Dead Space and Zeus…
          That really pissed me off.

          • JoJo_649

True, Zeus and Isaac were two more terrible choices, alongside the cut Journey – Gravity Rush stage and that dude with shiny eyes that came out with Kat during the first DLC release, who the hell chose such a forgettable and unknown character over Dart?!

          • Slayven19

Except that kat wasn’t unknown and was actually highly requested to be in the game. And its not like smash didn’t have characters that weren’t obscure so don’t even go there. Hardly anyone knew who ness or captain falcon was before smash and hardly any knew who marth was before melee came out because fire-emblem was japan only. Heck fat princess wasn’t even a bad pick and she was a first party character that was easy to get. They tried to get a SOC character but the creator wouldn’t let them use the characters and I’m sure we don’t have to get into the crash thing with activision.

          • JoJo_649

“that dude with shiny eyes that came out WITH Kat during the first DLC release”

Not Kat herself, she’s a great character and good pick, I was referring to I believe his name is Emmet, not sure, but that dude was pretty boring and not requested, Fat Princess is a horrible choice because they used her instead of other First party characters like Jaster Rogue (Rogue Galaxy), Dart Feld (Legend of The Dragoon), Rudy Roughnight (Wild Arms) or Ellen (Folklore) and many better choices, her main gimmick (aside from being a Fat Princess Peach) are soldier assists, which a Patapon Hero could’ve represented in a more interesting manner anyways, also the legal issues, not sure about them, but aside from Crash, LittleBigPlanet got SOC, Final Fantasy VII, MGS4 and many more series without issue, even as MM’s first title, no real defense for Superbot there.

          • Carlos Luis Ayala

Abe was never proven to be in the game and Isaac was wantedas for Snake it would have been terrible cause he’s alrwady in Smash. And dont you remember it was Activision that refuse to let Crash in. I loved the game sure it could have been better but the studio dud their best and for a newly formed team they did a great job. If only Naughty Dog had made it like originally planned or rumored to be it should have been better.

          • JoJo_649

Yeah, Snake was in smash, but he was in another smash clone before that, but people conveniently forget it, besides I found the MGS4 content (Gekko, Theme of Love, Mortar) in Brawl as jarring propaganda for another console exclusive, seriously out of place.

        • Slayven19

Looking like smash isn’t the problem, lots of games look like each other. There’d be no other games in a genre if none of them looked the same. For some reason games that are like smash takes heat for no real reason while other games get a pass if they look similar to another.

          • JoJo_649

The problem is when they look as copy-paste stuff like this game, All Stars and the CN ones, they don’t even attempt to cover it, unlike titles like Okami, You wouldn’t notice it’s a zelda clone until you hit the first dungeon, but even after it, the title is enjoyable for it’s own merits (Gorgeous art style, fantastic Japanese Folktale homages, Celestial Brush tactics) rather than the ripped-off design.

    • AkuLord3

Only cuz of some of the characters and gameplay choices is why the bashing…doing a similar game isn’t bad…in that case why don’t we bash every game of the genre that didn’t do it first : p

    • PreyMantis

Because the developers actually states that it’s inspired by Smash Bros., unlike that other game you speak of. But seriously, the game just didn’t deliver.

      • Carlos Luis Ayala

Um all stars did state that they love smash and many fighting games were their inspiration for your information :-P

        • PreyMantis

Did you not get the joke?

    • Suicunesol

It’s because Nintendo [fans] and Sony [fans] were in direct competition with each other that there was such backlash. Sony copied Nintendo’s idea, so the Nintendo fans were there to call them out on it. If Sony and Nintendo were friends and not rivals, Sony All-Stars might have been seen as complimentary rather than a shameless attempt to “steal ideas”.

Indies are exempt because their game is intended to be a compliment to SSB; it’s not meant to compete against SSB like Sony All-Stars. Not to mention that this game has a completely original roster. The designs are nice, but half the fun of SSB was playing as your favorite character from your favorite franchise and displaying his/her superiority to everyone else. I’m afraid that’s the biggest reason why this will never appeal as much as a real SSB.

Saw “Super Smash Bros. Inspired Indie Fighter” and thought Smash, but with popular indie game characters.
