Following their release, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y sold a combined total of 1.7 million copies in the U.S. in October, Nintendo have announced. The two games were released on October 12th.

Meanwhile, thanks to the release of Pokémon, and the cheaper Nintendo 2DS model, the Nintendo 3DS sold 452,000 units in the U.S. last month, making it the best-selling console for the month once more.

Well these are great numbers… but for pokemon arent surprising… cause pokemon is pokemon. :V

  • nitronite

To put this into perspective, Pokemon Black and White sold 2.4 million during their first month in the US, at the peak of the DS’s powers.

The real question is, what proportion of 3DS owners bought X/Y, and how does that compare with the proportion of DS owners that bought B/W and B2/W2? 1.7 million is a good number and all, but you can’t read much into it alone.

    • Slayven19

Why does those numbers matter may I ask?

      • Romancer Ecclesia

because those numbers mean the 2DS most probably isn’t a flop by Nintendo since it lowered the entry barrier and expanded the market for pokemon.

    • Sardorim

Not really seeing as how there are still many more DSs out there than 3DSs because the DS has been on the market much longer and is very cheap.

    • Jero

Yes, this. Practically every streetpasser I encounter is playing either pokemon X or pokemon Y. Sometimes I feel like every 3DS owner has pokemon.

    • Pekola

There’s 34 million people out there with 3DS’ (rough estimate). Pokemon X and Y has sold around…6 million copies? (Also a rough estimate)

Now, the DS sold an abnormally high amount of pokemon games because the install base was huge (over 80 million). The 3DS is selling, but nowhere near the amount the DS did.

I suspect that X and Y’s sales will increase drastically during November and December, possibly making the game close to 10 mil copies sold combined.

It’s getting to the point where owning a 3DS/2DS is mandatory. Pokemon is just one of the main great games you can only experience here!

    • NimbusStev

Yeah, up until the DS Lite came out I didn’t see much reason to get one. Now it’s one of the greatest systems of all time. I think you’re right, the 3DS is finally moving into that phase as well.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Really great news for Nintendo there. It would even be much better if the are able to maintain their consoles growth through the years and maintain the portable gaming market here considering that once again, Nintendo have been the sole force maintaining that market.T_T

    Great to hear it!

Now if only they’d allow you to play 6v6 online rating battles I’d have more reason to continue playing :/
I just found out that wasn’t the case, so now I can’t use the team I wanted to online because they don’t function in small groups.
