Nintendo Aren’t Done With Super Mario Galaxy Yet

By Ishaan . November 16, 2013 . 9:30am

Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U is a clear evolution of Super Mario 3D Land on the Nintendo 3DS. While it is an entirely new 3D Mario game, it’s building upon the combination of 2D and 3D Mario that 3D Land attempted, opting to drop the full-fledged exploratory style of games like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy.

In a recent Iwata Asks interview, Nintendo’s president asks Super Mario 3D Land producer Yoshiaki Koizumi how he feels about players that say a game like Super Mario Galaxy is better suited to a console Mario experience. Koizumi, who directed Galaxy, replies, “Well… first of all, I say thank you.”

He goes on to elaborate that he has certain regrets regarding Super Mario Galaxy, which he feels have been addressed in 3D World. For starters, Koizumi has wanted Mario and Luigi to be able to play together in a 3D Mario game since Super Mario 64. While Luigi did make an appearance as unlockable character in Galaxy several years later, you weren’t able to control him with a second player alongside Mario. This is an issue that has finally been rectified in Super Mario 3D World with 4-player co-op.

Second, Koizumi says, he feels that Mario Galaxy was a title more suited to boys. The addition of Princess Peach in Super Mario 3D World makes the title more appealing to women in addition to men, he suggests. Furthermore, he adds, having a greater variety of characters with unique abilities in a game like 3D World makes the game more widely appealing in general.

Then, Mario co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto pitches in. “Just so there is no misunderstanding, I should point out that this doesn’t mean we’ll never make another Super Mario Galaxy game,” Miyamoto clarifies.

He elaborates, “The same team can’t make both at the same time. And we can’t bring in a second party and slap the name Super Mario Galaxy on it. I suppose we could idealistically make both in Tokyo, but we want to do something new too, so there was that dilemma. Personally, I would like to take on a variety of new challenges with Super Mario Galaxy and design 2D Super Mario games in an easy-to-understand way within certain restraints.”

what if… just listen out here guys, what if they made a completely original Mario game?

EDIT: I’m not bashing nintendo here, I really like 3D world, but sunshine was a step in the right direction

    • Trevor Nicolaysen

Haha. Do they look like Squaresoft or Camelot to you?

    • CptPokerface

What HASN’T Mario done by now though?

      • OathkeeperSoraXIII

Has he actually ever done any plumbing? xD

        • John Diamond

Next Game: Super Mario Bro’s Origins

Play as mario as he fixes clogged sinks, in the ultimate plumbing simulator

          • OathkeeperSoraXIII

        • CptPokerface

his own special way of course. I think thats what that weird mario bros. game was about all those years ago..

        • Uso Ewin

He did in Mario Bros. (The arcade game)

      • 하세요

        I don’t think he’s done American Football.

    • SanoDragoon

Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 were more original -design wise- than many other games that appeared on the last gen, including various Triple A titles.

While I would like to see new mechanics and themes in a Mario game, it’s not that easy to bring out something different every time. Mario Sunshine is a proof of that.

I know that Nintendo has set the bar high with Mario, but asking them to do something “original and new” every time they release something it’s unrealistic, IMO.

That said, Super Mario 3D World looks fantastic.

      • ChiffonCake

        >Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 were more original -design wise- than many other games that appeared on the last gen, including various Triple A titles.
Yeah. And now they’re talking about making a third one.

        >[…] it’s not that easy to bring out something different every time.
        >[…] asking them to do something “original and new” every time they release something it’s unrealistic, IMO.
On the other hand, I’d say that saying that is doing Nintendo a disservice. It’s Nintendo, dammit! I don’t just think that they’re capable of coming up with great new ideas, I know that. But it’s like everytime they take a step forward, they then take two back.

It’s ok to make a sequel to iron out a new game’s wrinkles – Galaxy 2 fixed pretty much every problem I had with the first – but then they just start milking it, and… yeah. It happened with (the now rather ironically-named) New Super Mario, it looks like it’s going to happen with Galaxy…

      • Jirin

They can’t do something new every time but they can take the core elements of what works about Mario and make you use them in different ways than before.

Scale up or sideways, not down. In NSMBU you can rarely even scroll the screen both vertically and horizontally in the same level.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Super Mario 3D World is both original and new.

Its just 3D Land came out first

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

No it wasnt. The fucking repetitive level design was an evolution of Mario 64 and you cant make Super Mario 64 type levels huge as hell.

Personally I’d rather they just not use mario for an adventure game. Use a different character

  • I’d like another game like Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Star Road (the latter is a fan made hack, but it’s my number 1 favorite Mario game now).

    • 하세요

I personally never understood this as I felt Mario Galaxy was everything 64 was + improvements. That’s just me though.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        Presentation is everything.

People see dem spheres and they lose their heads

      • Kelohmello

Mostly. The game’s a bit less acrobatic than 64 I think though. In general Mario’s alot more floaty. Makes sense though, it’s in space most of the time after all.

  • Kelohmello

I just want another 3D mario game. Full fledged, 64, Sunshine, or Galaxy style. It doesn’t have to play like those of course. But with the upgrade in visuals with this new console it’d be a waste not to have something like that.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      You got one.

      Super Mario 3D World.

      Play it.

      • Kelohmello

It’s not really like those, even though I want it. It’s more of a mix between classic Mario and Galaxy. That’s cool, but I want the large exploration aspect and full 3D that the examples I listed earlier bring. 3D World is mostly top down or 2D perspective, so it’s largely different.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

          Use a different character then.

Like the Ice Climbers. I want to explore mountains and shit. Smash some polar bears

          • Kelohmello

? Not sure what a different character has to do with the game not being like the games I mentioned in the way I want it.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Mario’s gonna go on to do bigger and better things

          • Anthony Hadow

I will have disgagree with you there mario rarely ever shows promise with his new titles. I am a fan of a lot of the older mario games and seeing the new ones saddens me, Very little effort is made into mario games anymore, The New Super Mario Bros series for example you can clearly tell everything has been recycled and reused. Not to mention that the games difficulty has gone down. Take the mario coin power up. Ridiculous, gives you lives like no tomorrow and invulnerability. I would say while it looks shiney and neat to younger kids it makes for a really bad and over powered game mehanic. Super mario galxy is a whole nother ball game but as far as the traditional platformers go the wii u luigi dlc was the closest it ever came to what could be a fantastic mario game. But even that had flaws, everything was reused again, and they shortened the length of every level.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

New Super Luigi U > NSMBU.

You do realize the handheld NSMB titles ( which is where your fatigue is from) are done by Nintendo’s fledgling teams?
EAD Tokyo doesnt work on every game

  • I can’t believe how badly the gaming media has screwed up this message. They’re mixing a new 3D Mario platformer with Super Mario Galaxy 3. I know this is from an Iwata Asks, but the questions about another SMG title has been asked over and over again by the media and that’s why the question was asked here.

I think it’s safe to say the majority of Mario fans don’t want SMG3. They want the next 3D Mario platformer. We had Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. It’s time for the next new 3D platformer. Not the 3rd Galaxy game.

The Galaxy games were amazing, easily some of the best games of the 7th generation, but another one would be kind of lame.

    • Kaetsu

I’d actually rather have another Sunshine game as oppose to a new 3D Mario or Galaxy. Delfino Pier is one of my favourite hub areas of all time! It’s just so happy and joyful :D

    • Jirin

I agree, I’d like to see more star gathering style games but do something new with it, don’t just throw some more power ups on a gravity gimmick.

  • The Watcher

    I’m done with it.

  • Kavyn

IMO Super Mario 3D World seems like a better direction for the Mario series. Galaxy is a fun series (having only played the first one myself), but 3D world seems like a series that actually supports 4-player fun, and really pushes the boundaries in terms of what’s possible in a Mario game. NSMB for the Wii and Wii U failed to do that because it was always such a mess – it’s so crammed and so easy to kill one another.

If they do a Galaxy 3, I want them to keep the same sort of multiplayer system as seen in 3D World. Peach has developed so much as a character that it bothers me so much when they degrade her back into a damsel in distress. Rosalina has gone through a similar transformation, although IMO she’s an unnecessary addition to the series (people like her because of her design, not as an actual addition to the series) – she’s relevant to the Galaxy series, but unnecessary to everything else.

If they’re going to do another entry to the 64/Sunshine/Galaxy series style of play then I’d like to see them go back to their roots. It doesn’t have to be complex, just give us a new world to explore.

    • XaviIniesta

I like Rosalina, not just for her design, but for who she is as well. I like the fact that she can create a forcefield around herself or other things, and that she can levitate.
That’s why I prefer a character like Zelda in Smash Brothers over Peach. Besides the character design I also want the characters moves to appeal to me. I like graceful moves, but also moves that involve special powers. And in Mario Kart 7 Rosalina is classified as a Heavy type (I assume because she some times appears as larger than regular humans in Mario Galaxy), which I’ve always wanted my characters to be, but they never were seeing as the characters I tend to go for are quite the opposite from the usual heavy brutes.

I also quite liked her sad story.
Peach in contrast I don’t know much about other than the fact that she is a princess and tends to get kidnapped. She doesn’t seem to have any special powers like Rosalina either.

So if Rosalina is in Smash Brothers I’ll definitely play her. And the fact that she is in Mario 3D World makes me want to play the game even more.

  • I don’t want another Galaxy. Didn’t like the sphere level designs I liked it more when the levels weren’t space-like.
I’m fine with a platforming heavy title, it is Mario after all, but a new one with more exploration (and ditching the time limit doing so) would be nice to see again too.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

3D world does have quite a bit of exploration, but no its not an action adventure like Zelda.

I want EAD Tokyo to make an Ice Climbers 3D platforming game.

  • I gotta be honest, I find it ironic and highly hypocritical that many of the people who were claiming that 3D World was a rehash (at least initially) were begging for Mario Galaxy 3. You can’t call one game a rehash and another game an innovative sequel. It doesn’t work that way.

That being said, I’d rather they not do Mario Galaxy 3 and move onto something more original, or perhaps even revisit old ground and make Super Mario 64 2 or Super Mario Sunshine 2. I remember them saying Galaxy 3 would be hard to imagine because Galaxy 2 was made from some of their leftover ideas. If they don’t have enough inspiration to make a sequel, I’d rather they make something else. The worst thing you can do as a creator is make something new just because the fans want it. They have a unique new controller and I’d like to see them put that to use more.

I’m also not sure how co-op multiplayer would work in a Galaxy type setting. Having 4 people on a spherical object going all over the place might be a little confusing.

    • M’iau M’iaut

It is worth remembering Galaxy began life as what some were calling ‘Mario 128’ so there is crossover between the two IPs.

  • Rogerrmark

I’m not into Mario 64 anymore.
And despite my appreciation for Sunshine,I always missed those awesome Power-ups on a 3-D game.

Then Mario Galaxy came to the world, and brought most of the Power-ups back, and I had a GREAT time with both games.

I’m actually completely fine with 3-D World,it’s Mario on his best form, imo.
I just miss those secret levels on SM World, you know?Special World and checkpoints acessible through keys.

Hopefully, this game has something like that.

  • Happy Gamer

Nintendo isn’t or publishers at nintendo are not/aren’t :)

  • MrRobbyM

I’d rather have a game similar to 64 but without horrible controls.
